I've seen a lot of different things done during funerals in various parishes. Up till 1963, the Church generally prohibited cremation, as non-Christian cultures often practiced it due to their rejection of a bodily resurrection. Provided that the Catholic deceased have not embraced this philosophy, they are free to choose either cremation or a traditional burial. The Church strongly prefers that the body of the deceased be at least present for the funeral Mass, as it underscores not only our belief in the resurrection, but also testifies to our profound respect for the mortal remains, which were anointed several times in life with sacred oils and which received our Lord in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. In ideal circumstances, the body should then be cremated after the Mass, with interment taking place at some later date. That being said, the Church began allowing cremated remains to be present at Mass back in 1997, in deference to families who wished to bury the ashes immediately following the funeral service. This brings us to an important point that is often overlooked by devout Catholics: our obligation to treat the cremated remains with the same dignity that we afford an intact body. Human beings are both body and spirit, unlike the angels, and our bodies are therefore considered as temples of the Holy Spirit. Our mortal remains, whether intact or reduced to ashes, are to be buried in hallowed ground or in a vault to await the resurrection. Ashes are never to be scattered or kept in the family home in an urn, where they might eventually be carelessly discarded. The overarching principle is this: we treat the deceased's body with due respect, not because God needs the original matter for the resurrection, but because God created and redeemed our human flesh. It is a good idea to discuss and determine your funeral plans well in advance so that the funeral director and your family know your express wishes. Most funeral homes offer such services and will work with Catholics to make sure that everything is carried out in strict accordance with our beliefs. This will not only give you some peace of mind right now, but also help prevent the heated arguments that often arise when relatives are unsure of how to handle the eventual funeral. Have a question about Catholic teaching? Please email [email protected] with your topic, which we will address in a future bulletin with your permission. Catholic Charities Appeal 2015 The Catholic Charities Appeal continues. We are almost at 85% of our parish goal. This appeal helps the neediest members of our community and your support is urgently needed. If you haven’t had a chance to contribute, or if you wish to increase your contribution, there are pledge cards in the vestibule of church. The pledge cards can be mailed in the envelopes provided or put in the collection basket. If you wish, checks made payable to the Catholic Charities Appeal can be deposited into the collection basket. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. RCIA Program Are you a non-Catholic engaged or married to a Catholic? Were you baptized a Catholic, but never received First Penance, Holy Communion and/or Confirmation? Do you simply feel drawn to the Catholic faith and want to know more? Are you already a Catholic and wish to understand your faith better? If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions, or if you know someone who does, then our parish’s RCIA program is for you. Since 1988, the Catholic Church in the United States has used the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults to welcome new members into the Church. Here at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, we hold classes on Wednesday evenings from the end of September through the Easter season, starting at 6:30 PM and lasting no more than 90 minutes. We invite all participants to engage actively as we review the fundamentals of Catholicism with our team of volunteer teachers, who are known as catechists. There is ample opportunity to ask questions or even raise doubts and concerns that you may have about certain tenets of our faith, in a warm, non-judgmental and supportive environment. As the Lenten Season approaches, those group members who wish to may request enrollment and begin the process of formal entry into the Church during the Easter season. This is completely voluntary, and there is never any pressure to do so. For more information or to sign up, please contact RCIA coordinators Deacon Mark and Suzanne Kuhn via the parish office at 215-357-1300 ext. 176, or via email at [email protected]. The exhibit will feature master works from Michelangelo, Bernini and Guercino, as well as relics of Saints Peter and Paul and historical objects from the modern and ancient basilicas of Saint Peter’s in Rome. World Meeting of Families Theme for August Choosing Life God made us for a reason. His love is our life mission. This mission enables us to find our true identity. If we choose to embrace this mission, we will have a new perspective on many issues, not just the family. To live the mission of the domestic church means that Catholic families will sometimes live as minorities, with different values than their surrounding culture. Our mission of love will require courage and fortitude. Jesus is calling and we can respond, choosing lives of faith, hope, charity, joy, service and mission. The exhibit will be open Thursdays through Saturdays from 9:30 am – 9:00 pm, with the last entry at 7:30 pm; Sundays through Wednesdays from, 9:30 am – 5 pm, with the last entry at 3:30 pm. Tickets are on sale now. Contact the Franklin Institute at www.fi.edu for more information.
