“Sesi interviu bersama Jane mengambil tempoh dua jam.
suntingan silang (intercut) artistik.
“Selain belajar bahawa ia agak sukar
menghasilkan filem dokumentari drama,
saya juga sedar bahawa setiap orang mengalami masalah tersendiri. Maka itu, kita
tidak seharusnya mengadili seseorang,”
kata Muhammad tentang pengalamannya
SEORANG gadis autistik bernama Nurul
keluarga berasa susah menjaganya.
Namun, satu kemalangan tragik mendedahkan betapa pentingnya sokongan dan komunikasi buat ahli keluarga yang tinggal bersama
anak autistik.
Itulah sinopsis filem pendek Helai Demi
Helai, yang diterbitkan pelajar diploma, Farah
Diyanah Mohd Razid, dan diarah pelajar diploma, Tan Fu Wee, masing-masing 22 tahun,
dalam jurusan media penyiaran, Maktab Seni
Lasalle.
Diilhamkan daripada kisah sebenar seorang
anak autistik dengan kajian menerusi program
‘Temasek Cares-Safe (Support Autism through
Family Empowerment)’, Farah dan Tan mahu
menunjukkan bahawa seorang anak autistik
sebenarnya berbakat menerusi penggunaan
simbol dalam filem.
Kumpulan mereka mendapat tajaan Zeiss
Cine Lens dan kamera Sony A7sMii.
Mereka dibimbing pengarah mapan, Sanif
Olek.
Kata Tan: “Sanif mencadangkan agar kami
!NURMAYA ALIAS

Students of LASALLE College of Arts produced a story of an autistic girl
THE TEAM BEHIND THE SCENES: Students of Diploma in Broadcast Media,
LASALLE College of Arts, (Left to right) Luqman Nurhakim, Jonathan Jude Christee,
Tan Fu Wee and Farah Diyanah Mohd Razid, produced a short film titled ‘Helai Demi
Helai’ (‘Piece by Piece).
FILM: Short film ‘Helai Demi Helai’, by students of Diploma in Broadcast Media,
LASALLE College of Arts, is slated to show on June 10, on the website for 20/20 –
The Temasek Short Film Project.
An autistic girl named Nurul would rather play alone and be cooped up in reclusion.
Friendly chitchat with others is certainly foreign to her.
The complexities of interpersonal relationships have led to her being bullied by her
classmates at school. Her family seems helpless despite their best efforts to protect
her.
A tragic event that takes place one day serves as an eye-opener to everyone. Close
support and communication from the family are crucial in the upbringing of an autistic
child.
That basically summarises the short film ‘Helai Demi Helai’ (‘Piece by Piece’),
produced by Farah Diyanah Mohd Razid, and directed by Tan Fu Wee, both of whom
are 22 years old and presently pursuing Diploma in Broadcast Media at LASALLE
College of the Arts.
Inspired by a true story of an autistic child featured in the ‘Temasek Cares - Safe
(Support Autism through Family Empowerment)’ programme, Farah and Tan wanted
to highlight, using various representative symbols in the film, that even an autistic
child does not lack talent.
Their hard work drew the attention of Zeiss Cine Lens and Sony A7sMii camera,
which agreed to provide them sponsorship.
Throughout the entire process, they learned a lot from famous director, Sanif Olek,
who willingly lent his expertise as a mentor to the team.
Said Tan: “Sanif suggested to employ symbols to imbue more emotions in the film.”
For example, one symbol used in the film is pieces of paper, to describe the great
talent and interest possessed by Nurul in collage making.

“It is a very emotional [film]. Through the film, I tried to bring out the emotional
journeys of the actors and actresses as I guided them,” said Tan, who has formerly
directed two short films.
Farah, who has never been involved in any film making previously, admitted that the
entire journey has given her invaluable experience, in particular, the knowledge
imparted by her mentor, Sanif.
“Sanif provided us with ideas on how to improve the film and showed us how to edit a
film to make it more captivating for the audience,” said Farah.
‘Helai Demi Helai’ is scheduled to be released on www.project20twenty.sg on June
10.
