On Monday, the Panthers defeated Wadena-Deer Creek 60-46 to advance to the championship game against New York Mills. The score was close after the first half, but then as they’ve done all year, the maroon and gold dominated the second half, winning 61-49. Senior Grant Yohnke, at left, was given the game ball for scoring his 1000th point during the tournament. No article was submitted by Coach Thoennes at presstime. P.O. It was another dual like the other duals this year. Many open weights and many young wrestlers, but the guys wrestling with heart and effort. The Raiders were able to get Anthony Kern back on the mat and he looked good. But giving up 18 points on open weights was too much for the Raiders to overcome. On Friday and Saturday, the Raiders traveled to Cass Lake for the second biggest wrestling tournament in the state. With 37 teams there, it is a meat grinder and one where many guys get hurt. With that the Raiders sat out Anthony Kern, Jarret Kveton, Marshall Willis, Zack Waln and Dillon Card due to injury concerns. So we came into the tournament with only eight of the fourteen weights filled and yet, the guys wrestled outstanding. The young guys went after it, with a bright spot being Devin Dean who won two matches and looks to be turning a corner and becoming tougher every day. Quinn Kern, Braydon Bertram, and Camron Powel also impressed. Although they didn’t win many matches, they attacked and are really making strides to become solid varsity starters and the kind of wrestlers that will start winning more then they lose. The older guys wrestled out of their minds—all four of them placed with Ethan Kimber taking 2nd; Holt Truax 4th; Hayden Truax 6th; and Charlie Nienaber 7th. It was an outstanding tournament for them with Kimber and the Truax brothers defeating ranked opponents and beating guys convincingly. If they continue to wrestle like this and make improvements like they have, they will be a force down the stretch. Now if the Raiders can get the other guys back healthy and able, they can challenge for the section title again this year. Last year the Raiders filled all 14 weights and they placed four wrestlers. This year they had only eight wrestlers going and placed four, with four more guys who more than likely would’ve placed if they were healthy. The Raiders finished in 16th place which impressed many other coaches and fans. The next action for the Raiders will be January 2 when they travel to Belgrade for the BBE Invite. Note that the start time for the tournament changed and will start at 10 a.m. “In the Middle of Minnesota” HOURS: Mon.-Thurs. to 8 p.m. 320-352-6561 Fri. & Sat. to 5:30 p.m. 888-868-6561 OLSON’S TRUCK SERVICE, INC. “It’s the Quality of the Service” FULL SERVICE 13 South Lake St. Long Prairie, MN 56347 Engines Transmissions Brakes Radiators Air Conditioning Diagnostics 320-732-9003 E-mail: [email protected] Website: Hwy. 71 N • Clarissa 218-756-2399 The Nighthawks hosted their first home meet of the season as the Vikings of Pelican Rapids and the Eagles of New York Mills traveled to Parkers Prairie for a triangular on Friday, December 19. On Tuesday, December 16, the Nighthawks were on the road to Barrett where they took on West Central and Border West in triangular action. The Nighthawks fell in both matches, losing to WCA 6-66 and to Border West 16-39. No article was submitted by Coach Wagner at presstime.
