Event Program - Find a Ball or Gala in my area
June 22, 2013 • Shawnee Country Club • Topeka, Kansas Event Program The American Cancer Society Welcomes You To Saturday, June 22, 2013 • Shawnee Country Club • Topeka, Kansas The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. As a result, more than 14 million people in America will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org. Presenting Sponsor: Printing Sponsor: A Message From The Honorary Chair Greetings, Doug & Mary Ann Jennings 2013 Honorary Chairs What a privilege to be honorary chairs (Doug posthumously) of the new Corks & Forks fund raiser benefiting the American Cancer Society. We supported the Society even before Doug’s July 3, 1985, diagnosis. Until the last year of his life, he was active in cancer survivor events, Relay For Life, A Night of Wine and Roses, and served on the local board for several years. Please join in the festivities June 22, 2013, to raise funds for research and patient services. Cancer has touched the lives of so many people and continues to do so. However, there is always HOPE and that is what the American Cancer Society can help supply. Speaking of HOPE, we have supported Camp Hope for many years. The summer camp gives children a breather just to have fun. There will be an opportunity to support Camp Hope at Corks and Forks as well as silent and live auctions and other revenue enhancers. Here are a few examples of the Society at work in Kansas in 2012: n Four cancer research grants totaling $2.58 million are currently in place. n 3,700 individual patients received 17,049 services at no charge. n 1,069 Kansans received transportation assistance to eliminate barriers of getting to treatment. n 486 Kansans received free wigs, hats and turbans from the Society. n 577 patients and caregivers spent 8,443 nights in a Society Hope Lodge free of charge. n 4,736 patients received information and support from the 24 hour information line at 800-227-2345. n 91 children plus 7 day campers attended Camp Hope with 98 volunteers and 1 staff person ensuring their medical needs were met so the children could have fun. There are a number of advances through research that have improved the quality of treatment. Sadly, more research is needed. We had our miracle in 1985-86; it’s never too late for others to have theirs. Your support of Corks & Forks will benefit those yet to receive a cancer diagnosis as well as current patients. Enjoy the food, the fun and the wine tasting, but also be prepared to give HOPE generously. Sincerely, Doug and Mary Ann Jennings 3 A Julie Tucker Corks & Forks Chair M e s s a g e F r o m We’re so excited about this year’s event. Those of you who were part of A Night of Wine & Roses know the rich tradition the event has held in Topeka. We plan to continue that tradition with a few “tiny changes.” Thanks to our Presenting Sponsors, Stormont-Vail HealthCare and Advisor’s Excel. A big thanks also goes to Shawnee Country Club for hosting us and Glazer’s of Kansas, our beverage sponsor. Numerous donors and companies have generously supported this year’s event and it wouldn’t be possible without them. A big thanks to our Steering Committee who has spent many hours in the planning and preparation of Corks & Forks. My sincere gratitude and appreciation goes to everyone who has helped in this evening’s preparation. We are pleased to feature four of Topeka’s top chefs. Enjoy the cuisine they have prepared exclusively for this event and the featured wine with each pairing. The money we raise this evening will benefit the ongoing efforts of the American Cancer Society to help find a cure for cancer. Four cancer research grants totaling more than $2.58 million are currently in place in Kansas. Last year, 486 Kansas cancer patients received free wigs, hats and turbans from the Society. Our restricted gift this year is Camp Hope. We are proud T h e C h a i r of the support we have provided through the years. In fact, in 2013, 78 children attended Camp Hope in Kansas with 96 volunteers and 1 staff person making sure all their medical needs were met and they had a great time. This will be the final year of American Cancer Society’s sponsorship of Camp Hope. Please know all funds raised this evening will go to the 2013 camp’s operating costs which, exceed the funds that have been raised for camp. We are pleased to announce Camp Hope will be transitioned to and continued by Kans For Kids, a charitable organization in Hoisington that has been a long-time supporter of camp. Beginning in 2014, our restricted gift will shift to another wonderful patient service, Hope Lodge. Last year, 577 Kansas cancer patients and their caregivers spent 8,443 nights in a Society Hope Lodge free of charge. Thank you for joining us this evening. On behalf of the 2013 Steering Committee and your local American Cancer Society, we appreciate your support and hope you have a wonderful evening! R e s t r i ct e d G i ft s Your financial commitment will be used to provide important cancer-related services such as Camp Hope. Camp Hope Camp Hope is a traditional summer camp for youth ages 7 to 17 who have or have had cancer. Kansas is fortunate to have such a youth camp experience available in our state. However, Camp Hope requires additional financial resources for medical, emotional and family support not typically available at youth camps. Camp Hope, like all programs at the American Cancer Society, is solely dependent upon contributions received from the public. In light of a challenging economy that has put increased pressure on our limited resources, the American Cancer Society must focus those limited resources on strategies that will reach more people and save more lives faster. As a result, the Society made the tough decision this spring to transition 16 out of children’s camps nationwide by 2014. This will be the final year for the Society to sponsor Camp Hope. We are pleased to announce that Kans for Kids in Hoisington will take over Camp Hope for 2014 and beyond. All funds received this evening will continue to go directly to this year’s camp. It will help cover operating costs which exceed revenue generated to support the camp. Beginning in 2014, we will shift our restricted gift to Hope Lodge, which assisted 577 Kansas cancer patients and caregivers with 8,443 nights lodging free of charge. For more information on Hope Lodge, please visit www.cancer.org/hopelodge or visit with your local Society staff member.
