Character Counts is a non- profit organization founded in Iowa in 1997.
There mission is to “recognize, enhance and sustain the positive qualities of
Iowans in order to promote civility through character development. Our
vision is that every Iowan embrace and practice good character by demonstrating Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and
Citizenship.”
Mr. Erpelding
The staff headed by Mrs. Powers nominated Mr. Erpelding, former Orange
principal, to receive the Character Counts Award. They nominated Mr. Erpelding because they thought he was perfect for the award and that he lives
his life following the six pillars. Getting the award is like a once in a life
time opportunity. Mr. Erpelding is a very special person for getting the
award
Mr. Erpelding also won the Crystal Apple Award. The Crystal Apple Award is an award for
teachers and staff members who show good character. Mr. Erpelding was the perfect one for that too.
Here are some words from Mrs. Boyce. “He is kind, caring, and has created a family at Orange
School. No one is more deserving of this first Crystal Apple Award.”

There is a very interesting kindergartner that I interviewed named Blayzen Barbee. I’ve learned that his favorite color is dark blue and his favorite animal is an
elephant. He plays soccer and dances in his free time.
He also likes to sing and his favorite singers are Justin
Bieber and Chris Brown. His favorite channels are Cartoon Network and Disney Channel. When Blayzen
grows up, he wants to become a police officer. I think
he would be great!

Music
By: Meredith Eighmey
Music is very popular these days. Some of us like rock, hip pop, country,
or maybe even classical. But my favorite is country, some might disagree but,
that’s what I like.
Lady Antebellum is one of my favorite bands. Some of their amazing
songs are: “Just a Kiss”, “Need You Now”, and “Hello World”. There are more
songs but those are my favorites.
Another good singer is Jake Owen. My favorite song that he sings is
“Barefoot Blue Jean Night”.
Carrie Underwood is actually my all time favorite with songs of “Remind
Me” which is a duet with Brad Paisley and “Cowboy Casanova”. I know there
are definitely more songs but I don’t remember anymore.
If you get a chance, you should watch the music videos of the songs I
listed above if you haven’t already seen them. Now you know what my favorite
songs are, what’s yours?

I have counted all of your votes and your favorite animal to
have is a dog. Dogs are great pets to have!!!
Choosing your dog can be the hardest part. So that you don’t
have to pay the expensive prices of dogs at an animal store, I suggest
you try the Humane Society. Because they have low prices and a lot
of dogs to choose from. From small dogs to big dogs, they have it all!
Ask one of the workers if you can pet the dog that you really like. See
if the dog likes you, If it does, then that means it’s the right dog for
you.
After you adopt the dog you want, find a name that complements the dog. For example, if you get a fast dog , you could name it Speedo, or if you get a sweet dog,
you could name it Sweetie Pie. Another fun thing to do is once you get home you can make a little birth
certificate for your dog on Microsoft Word Office.
Make sure that if you get a puppy, that it’s well fed and has lots of attention. All dogs need attention. And if you want to train the dog make sure that you have concentration and patience. Make sure
that the dog is trained to stay at your house and never let it run free.
If your dog runs away, stay calm and determined and you’ll find the dog.
In the winter make sure the dog still goes outside, but not for long each time.
Make sure the dog likes the mailman so that he/ she will not chase after them.
I hope this has helped you to understand dogs more. Thank you for reading.

We interviewed some students about how they like to wear their uniforms. These ideas may put thoughts in
your head about adding a little pizzazz to your everyday outfits.
I like cargo khaki shorts, black belts, NIKES and bright colored shirts.-Chase Pabst
I wear dragon belts, black pants, dark colored shirts, and skateboard shoes.-Andrew Schrage
I enjoy wearing skorts, dark colored polo’s, regular tennis shoes, and unique designed belts.Emmy Hewitt
Black pants, dark colored polo’s, high-tops, and belts with peace signs are what I like to
wear.- Addyson Haberstich
Now you’ve seen their style, but we will give you some tips about fashion. Girls, it is ok to wear
skirts with leggings, but the leggings have to be a solid color just like your polo’s. If you have a fun personality you can add a little sparkle to your outfits. You might want to wear Uggs or fashionable boots since fall/
winter is here! Boys, you can wear ties to show your personality. If you like, you can wear a tux. If you want,
you can wear a hat, but just for outside.

After your delicious meal, here is something that will make you feel good. A treat that you will always remember.
Whoopie Pumpkin Pie Cookies
After you have made the cookie and the pumpkin flavored filling, put some filling in-between the two cookies.
For the cookie part
1 stick of unsalted butter at room temperature
pinch of kosher salt
For the Filling Part
1 and ¼ cups of granulated sugar
4 ounces of cream cheese at room temperature
1 large egg
4 tablespoons of unsalted butter at room temperature
1 cup of buttermilk, at room temperature
2/3 cup of confectioners’ sugar
1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
¼ cup of canned pure pumpkin
1 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
¾ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
pinch of kosher salt
1 and ½ teaspoons of baking soda
½ teaspoon of baking powder
Make the cookies: Line 3 baking sheets with parchment paper (or use 2 baking sheets and bake the cookies in
batches) Pre heat the oven to 400*. Using a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in
the egg, then the buttermilk and vanilla. Whisk the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt
in a bowl. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Drop 8 scoops
of batter, about 2 tablespoons each, onto each prepared baking sheet, spacing them 3 inches apart. Bake until
edges are set but the cookies are still soft, about 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool 2
minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer to racks and let cool completely.
Make the filling: Beat the cream cheese and
butter in a small bowl with a mixer until smooth.
Slowly beat in the confectioner’s sugar until
smooth. Add the pumpkin, cinnamon and salt.
Beat until smooth.
To assemble: spread a heaping tablespoonful of
filling on the flat side of 2 cookies and sandwich
with another cookie. Repeat with the remaining
cookies.
I hope you enjoy your Whoopie Pumpkin Pie
Cookie!

Dear McKayla & Allison,

Q: I have a friend in another class and I can’t talk to her much. What should I
do?

A: That happened to us this year, you just try your best to plan sleepovers
or play dates.

Q: My parents are painting the living room, and it stinks. My parents won’t let
me go outside to get fresh air. What do I do?


A: Ask your parents if you may open a window.
Q: There are two girls in my class and they’re ok. When we get to have partners they always want to be with me, but I don’t want to be with them. What
should I do?

A: I would tell them that you want to be with them but you already have
a partner. Also be with them on other days, don’t make them feel bad.

Q: I have a friend that can’t stop talking about a movie. She still wants me to
hang out with her at every morning recess. I still want to be her friend! What
should I do?

A: First of all don’t give up on her/him. Always try to be the polite first
but if that doesn’t work just say STOP IT. Say it like you mean it, but say
it in a friendly tone.
Be ready to ask your questions, we might be coming to your class next.

A Visit with Mrs. Callamash…
By Cassidy Burger
“Mrs. Callamash, may I ask how was life growing up?” “Please call me Odessa”.
“Okay Odessa, How was life growing up?” “Well I can’t complain. I had a wonderful childhood with my dog Bun Bun.” “Can you describe Bun Bun for me?” “Well, she was a purple
dog with rainbow eyes, her paws were neon green and so was the tip of her tail. The neon
green on her glowed in the dark.” “Yes and what was she like?” “Oh!, She never bit anyone.
All she did to greet someone was to lick them. She’s such a great dog.”
“So where did you grow up?” “Right here on my farm in Pimpleton, Iowa! Little
Odessa May Dingle feeding the chickens! Good memories. Good memories.”
“Odessa, please tell me about your family. When did you meet your husband?” “Back
in 1995. We got married in 1996.” “Did you have any children? And when” “Yes I did. Two
years after we got married. That’s when I found out I was having twins. A boy and a girl.”
“So tell me about your children.” “Well, my son, Throckmortan P. Callamash Jr., was named
after my husband. We call him Throckmortan P. Callamash Jr., Jr. for short. Jr. likes climbing
trees in our apple orchard out back.” “Tell me about your daughter.” “Elvira Q. Snackafraty
Callamash is very interested in animals, especially aquatic animals. She loves to watch the
tadpoles swim in our pond.” “And finally your husband.” “My husband Throckmortan P. Callamash Sr. is an electrician. That’s why we have a disco ball! He’s also a great help around
the farm. We don’t have to do any plowing because he invented a plowermajiggy! It plows
with no one pushing it or driving it!”
Hope you enjoyed my visit with Mrs. Callamash.

The Adventures of Sam and Pam
By: Fiona Dalbey
One day the twins, Sam and Pam, went to the beach with their parents. While they were
there they saw a cave. They took their dad’s tool box into the cave. When they left the
cave they saw a ship leaving. They took their dad’s telescope from the tool box. They
looked through it and saw a pirate ship flag, but worst of all, they saw their parents tied
up on the ship! Sam and Pam sat in shock, frozen unable to move. Pam recovered first.
“Samuel!” she exclaimed.
He didn’t recover. Pam slapped him!
“OW! What was that for?” Sam asked.
“Oh never mind…our Mom and Dad are captured and tied up on a pirate ship! What will
we do?” exclaimed Pam.
“We’ll figure it out on the way!”Sam shouted.
“How did we miss that?” Pam asked in awe.
There it was, a shipwrecked pirate ship.
