MATINEE OUTREACH PROGRAM
Presently, in its 21st year, the Matinee Outreach Program is a
fundamental educational platform that continues to channel
the cultural significance of film to elementary and high school
students. The program began as an event that attracted
1,000 students and has grown to nearly 5,000 Chicago area
student attendees.
The Matinee Outreach Program provides students the
opportunity to learn about the diversity of other cultures,
the possibility to connect with their cultural heritage, and
the prospect of meeting film directors/actors/producers to
discuss viable career options in the arts.
STUDENT FILM SEGMENT
The Student Film Segment presents short films made by
student filmmakers from various countries in Latin America
and in the Chicago area. It will focus on showing the work of
new talents in filmmaking and bring them and their works to
Chicago during the 32nd Chicago Latino Film Festival.
The Student Film Segment of the Chicago Latino Film Festival
is organized by the International Latino Cultural Center, The
Latino Media and Communication, The College of Computing

Directed by Roberto Girault
Starring Jaime Camil (“Jane the Virgin”) and set in Campeche, México in the
1950s, “Illusions S.A.” centers around an agency that turns your deepest
fantasies, wishes and even lies into reality. A noble grandfather has, through
fictitious letters, lied to his wife about the true nature of his grandson who
left their house more than 20 years ago. After the grandson apparently dies
when the ship carrying him back to México sinks in the ocean, the firm’s
director (Camil) and a recent recruit (Adriana Louvier) take on the mission
of posing as the grandson and his wife. But things get out of hand when the
real grandson pops up with demands of his own.

Directed by Juan Schnitman
Genre: Drama

It should have been one of the happiest days of their
lives. On the way to closing the contract on their first
home, Lucía and Marcelo withdraw $100,000 in cash
from their bank. Unfortunately, the seller postpones the
signing to the following day, forcing the young couple
to return to their apartment and hide the money for
safekeeping. That simple act opens a festering can
of worms as old resentments gush to the surface.
Schnitman’s intense feature debut is anchored by
Pilar Gamboa’s and Juan Barnerini’s uncompromising
performances as the young couple.
a despertar.

Featuring guest turns by legendary Mexican director
Arturo Ripsten (in his acting debut) and Angela Molina
(“That Obscure Object of Desire”), Katzowicz’s opera
prima intertwines five stories shot in three countries to
explore humanity’s technology-driven alienation. These
are stories about characters glued to their smartphones,
their laptops, their tablets all day long; characters like
a man who, pretending to be a coronel, seeks the
company of women thru the web and a couple who
discover a new source of income in online sex.

Mario reluctantly takes over the care of his father
Miguel, an Argentine exile in Spain, after he suffers a
debilitating stroke that leaves him senile. Miguel begins
to recall the names of old friends and events; he keeps
repeating one name in particular: Diana. These brief
lapses lead Mario to research his father’s history as
a young political activist in 1970s Argentina. Past and
present collide in this drama about the open wounds
that the country’s tragic history left on its survivors and
on their descendants.
descendientes.

only available means of transportation is a steam train

of Recife mayoral candidate Antonio, returns home. Her
relationship with her father is uneasy to say the least,
but that won’t stop him from using her to advance his
own political ambitions. Put in charge of an anti-drugs
foundation, Joli comes face to face with the knowledge
that drug addiction knows no social boundaries. Aragão’s
stylish psychological thriller paints a disturbing, almost
schizophrenic portrait of Brazil’s elite.
e filha do candidato á prefeitura do Recife, António,
Brasileira.

In her feature film debut, Jessica Rodríguez gives a
Cuban spin to the classic tales of “One Thousand and
One Nights” while paying tribute to Humberto Solás’
equally classic “Lucía.” Esperanza is a blind woman
who lives alone in the Cuban countryside. When Mario,
a criminal on-the-run, breaks into her house and

him by sharing three of the dozens of tales she has
written about “common people worth remembering”: all
take place at a different period of Cuba’s recent history.

On September 24, 1970, armed police officers
accompanied by a district attorney entered the house
of student leader Amín Abel Hasbún and executed
him. Joaquín Balaguer’s government reacted to the
public outrage by appointing a special commission to
investigate the case. Using unclassified documents
dating back to the Cold War, official transcripts and
Fidel Santana’s biography “Amín Abel Hasbún – A
Sleeping Giant,” Etzel Báez painstakingly and chillingly
reconstructs the interrogations of the parties involved as
well as the actual assassination.

The Gunguna is a tiny .22 caliber pistol that once
belonged to General Trujillo and had enormous
sentimental value for the dictator. It is sought out by
collectors worldwide who are willing to pay a pretty
penny for it. Some are even willing to kill for it. The
gun will fall in the hands of a construction worker in
desperate straits, a corrupt border patrol sergeant, a
merciless loan shark, a local Chinese mobster, an arms
dealer, and a sleazy bar owner. Director Alemany and
screenwriter Miguel Yarull make an auspicious debut
with this dark, funny, and tense film.

Photojournalist Tatiana Fernández Geara’s feature
documentary debut explores the sacrifices three
Dominican mothers have made to provide for their
children. Employed as nannies outside their country,
some spend years without seeing their own children,
becoming surrogate parents for the ones they are hired
to take care of. Back on the island, grandparents and
other relatives become surrogate parents of their own.
What started out as a master thesis project turned into a
heartbreaking and intimate film about motherhood and
the immigrant experience.

this equally trippy homage to the paranoid sciencefiction films of the 1950s and 60s. On the rainy night
of October 2, 1968, after hundreds of students were

inside an isolated station for the next bus to take them to
Mexico City. Suddenly, each character undergoes a slow,
unexpected, and mysterious genetic mutation.

What connects the perfectly preserved remains of
a Neanderthal man with the lives of two women? In
the case of Catarina, she is the product of a genetic
experiment where the DNA of that man was injected
into a woman’s egg. For film student Joana, the corpse’s
discovery serves as inspiration to a story that contains
some eerie parallels to Catarina’s. Starring Ivana
Baquero (“Pan’s Labyrinth”), “Gelo” is a mind-bending
inquiry into the nature of stories, of reality and of free
will.

Veteran Uruguayan documentarian Mario Handler’s
latest film explores the diversity of his country’s working
class, the concept of work and all that it entails. His
camera roams the streets, warehouses and factories of
Montevideo and Uruguay’s mines and farms, following
these workers from the moment they board the bus or
train on their way to work to the moment they clock
out for the day. He also captures their extracurricular
activities as they organize for a strike, relax at home,
participate in a candombé ritual or, in one case, marry
their same-sex partner. Handler creates a vivid, rich
mosaic of a complex, dynamic world.

their students, many of whom do not make it to college, either because they cannot
compete academically or because their families do not have the financial resources
to send them to college. The girls face an uneven playing field –or in the case of the
girls at Kelly High School, no soccer field at all–, problems at home, discrimination,
and poverty, but remain undaunted thanks to their teammates and the dedicated
mentoring of their coach.

Chicago Latino Film Festival | April 8-21, 2016

Immediately following the tragic death of
her young child, a rural Mexican woman,
Marta Rosa, must struggle to persevere
through both her own internal grief and the
harsh realities of the world around her.
Yainis Ynoa, a talented and ambitious
first generation Puerto Rican-Dominican
American actress, raised in the Bronx,
takes on the challenges of the New York
City television and indie film industry.
Resilient and determined to help support
her family, she overcomes anxieties and
frustrations to realize her goals with
passion, humor, and technique.

Stanley, a man on his deathbed, relives
the pivotal moments of his life surrounding
his desire to become a musician when he
finds an object from his past on his hospice
bedside table.
A colorful, kaleidoscopic essay film
exploring questions of identity and
genealogy through a series of seemingly
disconnected topics.
In this music video, T-vision (Tim Vogel),
gets arrested for driving under the
influence of alcohol and eventually finds
truth, hope and a new life through religion.
After saying goodnight after their first date,
Thomas pursues a second date while Katie
tries to let him down gently.
hospicio.
