Elias of great fame was from Thisbe or Thesbe, a town of Galaad (Gilead), beyond
the Jordan. He was of priestly lineage, a man of a solitary and ascetical character,
clothed in a mantle of sheep skin, and girded about his loins with a leathern belt.
His name is interpreted as "Yah is my God." His zeal for the glory of God was
compared to fire, and his speech for teaching and rebuke was likened unto a
burning lamp. From this too he received the name Zealot. Therefore, set aflame
with such zeal, he sternly reproved the impiety and lawlessness of Ahab and his
wife Jezebel. He shut up heaven by means of prayer, and it did not rain for three
years and six months. Ravens brought him food for his need when, at God's
command, he was hiding by the torrent of Horrath. He multiplied the little flour
and oil of the poor widow of Sarephtha of Sidon, who had given him hospitality in
her home, and when her son died, he raised him up. He brought down fire from
Heaven upon Mount Carmel, and it burned up the sacrifice offered to God before
all the people of Israel, that they might know the truth. At the torrent of Kisson, he
slew 450 false prophets and priests who worshipped idols and led the people
astray. He received food wondrously at the hand of an Angel, and being
strengthened by this food he walked for forty days and forty nights. He beheld God
on Mount Horeb, as far as this is possible for human nature. He foretold the
destruction of the house of Ahab, and the death of his son Ohozias; and as for the
two captains of fifty that were sent by the king, he burned them for their
punishment, bringing fire down from Heaven. He divided the flow of the Jordan,
and he and his disciple Elisseus passed through as it were on dry land; and finally,
while speaking with him, Elias was suddenly snatched away by a fiery chariot in
the year 895 B.C., and he ascended as though into heaven, whither God most
certainly translated him alive, as He did Enoch (Gen. 5:24; IV Kings 2: 11). But
from thence also, after seven years, by means of an epistle he reproached Joram,
the son of Josaphat, as it is written: "And there came a message in writing to him
from Elias the Prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father,
Because thou hast not walked in the way," and so forth (II Chron. 21:12).
According to the opinion of the majority of the interpreters, this came to pass either
through his disciple Elisseus, or through another Prophet when Elias appeared to
them, even as he appeared on Mount Tabor to the disciples of Christ.
Holy Martyr Emilian (+363)
The Holy Martyr Emilian, who was a Slav, suffered for Christ during the reign of
Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363). Julian wanted to restore the cult of the
pagan gods throughout the Roman Empire, and he issued an edict, according to
which all Christians who failed to honor the pagan gods would be subject to
death.St Emilian lived in the Thracian city of Dorostolum on the banks of the River
Dunaj (Danube).The imperial edict was read in the city square, but the people of
Dorostolum declared that there were no Christians in the city.St Emilian was a
slave of a cruel and fanatical idolater, and was a secret Christian. Some sources
state that he was the son of a local officer named Sabbatianus. When the father
learned that Emilian believed in Christ, he was so enraged that he insulted him
with vulgar words and had him whipped. He pointed out that he could expect even
worse things to happen to him if he remained a Christian.Instead of being
intimidated by these threats, St Emilian’s faith in Christ was strengthened. The
next day he went into a pagan temple and smashed the statues with a hammer. The
governor ordered that St Emilian be beaten mercilessly, and then to be burned
alive. He did not perish when he was thrown into the fire, but instead the flames
consumed many of the pagans who were standing about. When the fire had gone
out, St Emilian lay down upon the dying embers, and gave up his soul to the Lord.

THE EPISTLE (St James 5,10-20)
Brethren, take as an example of suffering and patience the prophets who spoke in the
Name of the Lord. Behold, we call those blessed who were steadfast. You have heard of
the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is
compassionate and merciful. But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by Heaven
or by earth or with any other oath; but let your yes be yes and your no be no, so that you
may not fall under condemnation. Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any
cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the
church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and
the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has
committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray
for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power
in its effects. Elias was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that
it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he
prayed again and the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit. My
brethren, if any one among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let
him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul
from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
THE GOSPEL (Matthew 9,1-8)
At that time, Jesus got into a boat, crossed over and came to His own city. And behold,
they brought to Him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith He said
to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the
scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their
thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your
sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of
man has authority on earth to forgive sins”— He then said to the paralytic—“Rise, take
up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they
marveled, and they glorified God, Who had given such authority to men.
Apostolul (Romani 12,6-14)
Fraţilor, avem felurite daruri, după harul ce ni s-a dat. Dacă avem proorocie,
să proorocim după măsura credinţei; dacă avem slujbă, să stăruim în slujbă;
dacă unul învaţă, să se sârguiască în învăţătură; dacă îndeamnă, să fie la
îndemnare; dacă împarte altora, să împartă cu firească nevinovăţie; dacă stă
în frunte, să fie cu tragere de inimă; dacă miluieşte, să miluiască cu voie
bună! Dragostea să fie nefăţarnică. Urâţi răul, alipiţi-vă de bine. În iubire
frăţească, unii pe alţii iubiţi-vă; în cinste, unii altora daţi-vă întâietate. La
sârguinţă, nu pregetaţi; cu duhul fiţi fierbinţi; Domnului slujiţi. Bucuraţi-vă
în nădejde; în suferinţă fiţi răbdători; la rugăciune stăruiţi. Faceţi-vă părtaşi
la trebuinţele sfinţilor, iubirea de străini urmând. Binecuvântaţi-i şi nu-i
blestemaţi.
Sf Evanghelie (Matei 9,1-8)
În vremea aceea, intrând în corabie, Iisus a trecut marea înapoi şi s-a întors
în oraşul Său. Şi iată că I-au adus pe un slăbănog, care zăcea în pat. Şi Iisus,
văzând credinţa lor, a zis slăbănogului: îndrăzneşte, fiule; ţi se iartă păcatele
tale. Atunci unii dintre cărturari au zis în sinea lor: Acesta săvârşeşte
blasfemie. Dar Iisus, ştiind gândurile lor, le-a zis: pentru ce cugetaţi cele rele
în inimile voastre? Căci ce este mai lesne a zice: ţi se iartă păcatele tale, sau
a zice: scoală-te şi umblă? Ca să ştiţi însă că putere are Fiul Omului pe
pământ a ierta păcatele, atunci a zis slăbănogului: scoală-te, ia-ţi patul tău şi
te du la casa ta. Şi, sculându-se el, şi-a luat patul şi s-a dus la casa sa. Iar
mulţimile, văzând acestea, se minunau şi slăveau pe Dumnezeu, Care a dat o
putere ca aceasta oamenilor.
Icoana Maicii Domnului “Prodromita” de la Sf Munte Athos
„Veniţi acum să dănţuim în duhovniceşti cântări, o, iubitorilor de praznic! Şi cu credinţă să prăznuim, cinstind pomenirea înfricoşatei şi preaslăvitei minuni a Maicii lui
Hristos Dumnezeu, care, cu negrăit chip, şi-a închipuit dumnezeieştile feţe pe sfânta sa Icoană, de la care primim tot felul de tămăduiri“. (stihiră din cadrul Laudelor de la
Utrenie).În data de 12 iulie se face pomenirea Sfintei Icoane Prodromiţa, făcătoare de minuni, care se află la Muntele Athos, în patrimoniul Schitului Prodromu.Numeroase
icoane, copii după aceasta, se găsesc în multe locaşuri de cult din ţară. În Transilvania, mănăstirea închinată Maicii Domnului de la Măgura-Jina, judeţul Sibiu, îşi sărbătoreşte
pe 12 iulie cel de-al doilea hram, al icoanei nefăcute de mână „Prodromiţa“.Chipul Maicii Domnului şi cel al Pruncului Iisus au nuanţa grâului, asemănându-se foarte mult cu
descrierea rămasă de la Sfinţii Epifanie şi Nichifor, care au lăsat posterităţii un portret al Fecioarei. Conform celor spuse de Cleopa Paraschiv („Icoana nefăcută de mână
omenească Prodromiţa“, Editura Panaghia), există mărturii care atestă că Sfintele Feţe se schimbă miraculos, uneori întunecându-se, alteori luminându-se. Se mai afirmă că
icoana a fost analizată ştiinţific prin cercetare la microscop, fără să fie găsite urme de pensulă.Un document din arhiva Schitului Prodromu, datat la 29 iunie 1863, arată: „Eu,
Iordache Nicolau, zugrav din târgul Iaşi, am zugrăvit aceasta sfântă icoană a Maicei Domnului cu însăşi mâna mea, la care a venit o minune: după ce am isprăvit veşmintele,
după meşteşugul zugrăvirii mele, m-am apucat să lucrez feţele Maicei Domnului şi a lui Iisus Hristos. Privind eu la chipuri, cu totul a ieşit din potriva, pentru care foarte mult
m-am mâhnit, socotind că mi-am uitat meşteşugul. A doua zi, după ce m-am sculat, am făcut trei metanii înaintea Maicei Domnului, rugându-mă să-mi lumineze mintea, să
pot isprăvi sfânta ei icoană. Când m-am dus să mă apuc de lucru, am aflat chipurile drese desăvârşit, precum se vede. Văzând această minune, n-am mai adaos a-mi pune
condeiul, fără numai am dat lustrul cuviincios, deşi o greşală a fosAu fost compuse mai multe slujbe închinate acestei icoane. Cea mai recentă înregistrare este cea a
„Paraclisului icoanei“, realizată de Grupul psaltic „Nectarie Protopsaltul“ din Bucureşti. Una dintre ele este paraclisul alcătuit în greceşte de dr. Haralambos Busias şi tradus de
diaconul Constantin-Cornel Coman, păstrând metrica originalului. În anul 2007 a apărut la Editura Evanghelismos cartea de slujbă „Acatistul, Paraclisul şi slujba Icoanei
Făcătoare de Minuni a Maicii Domnului“ al cărei autor este arhimandritul Ian Pârvulescu, stareţul Mănăstirii Lainici, judeţul Gorj.Troparul, alcătuit în glasul 1, exprimă
purtarea de grijă a Maicii Domnului către oameni, dăruind celor ce se închină ei tămăduiri sufletelor şi trupurilor: „Născătoare de Dumnezeu pururea Fecioară, sfintei şi
dumnezeieştii icoanei tale cu dragoste şi cu credinţă închinându-ne, o sărutăm mulţumind; căci prin ea celor credincioşi dăruieşti cu adevărat tămăduiri sufletelor şi trupurilor.
Pentru aceasta grăim către tine: slavă fecioriei tale, slavă milostivirii tale, slavă purtării tale de grijă, ceea ce eşti una binecuvântată!“De o frumoasă muzicalitate este condacul,
alcătuit în glasul 8, al acestei sărbători: „Chipului tău, Preacurată Născătoare de Dumnezeu Fecioară, ne închinăm credincioşii, cinstindu-l după vrednicie; căci ne păzeşti şi ne
izbăveşti din ispite şi din toate relele întâmplări. Pentru aceasta mulţumind grăim ţie: Bucură-te, Fecioară, nădejdea şi slava creştinilor!“.Icoanele sunt instrumentul cel mai de
preţ al evlaviei credincioşilor, care ajută la o cunoaştere mai desăvârşită a lui Dumnezeu, a Maicii Domnului şi a sfinţilor.t aceasta ca am dat lustru la o asemenea minune“.
Vietile Sfintilor
Sf Mucenic Emilian
Acest sfânt era din Durostor, cetatea Misiei din Tracia, rob fiind unui elin în zilele lui Iulian Paravatul si ale lui Capitolie
Vicarul. Crezând el în Hristos si scârbindu-se de idoli, aflând vreme cu bun prilej, luând un ciocan, a intrat în capistea
idolilor si a sfarâmat toti idolii si a risipit jertfele. Însa fiind supusi altii la chinuri pentru aceasta, el a mers de s-a vadit si a
fost batut cu vine de bou si, fiind bagat într-un cuptor cu foc, si-a dat sufletul la Dumnezeu in anul 363 de la Hristos.
Sfantul Pamvo
Sfantul Pamvo a trait viata pustniceasca in desertul Nitriei (muntele Nitria) din Egipt. Sfantul Antonie cel Mare (praznuit
la 17 ianuarie) spunea despre el ca "din frica de Dumnezeu a făcut Duhul lui Dumnezeu să locuiască în el" (apotfegma
Pimen 75 din Patericul Egiptean). Avva Pimen cel Mare (praznuit la 27 august) spunea despre el: "trei fapte trupeşti am
văzut noi la avva Pamvo: nemâncarea până seara în fiecare zi, tăcere şi rucodelie (lucrul mâinilor) mare" . Iar sfântul
Teodor Studitul spunea despre el ca era "înflacarat în lucrare si în cuvânt".S-a nascut catre anul 303 dupa Hristos si a fost
unul din primii pustnici care s-au alaturat lui Avva Amun la Nitria. Desi fara carte, a invatat Scripturile si a fost hirotonit
preot in anul 340. A adormit intru Domnul in mijlocul fratilor si ucenicilor la anul 374.La începutul vieţii sale monastice,
Sfântul Pamvo a auzit versetele Psalmului 38 al lui David: "Păzi-voi căile mele, ca să nu păcătuiesc eu cu limba mea".
Aceste cuvinte pătrunseră adânc în sufletul său iar el încercă să le urmeze pururea. De aceea, când era întrebat ceva
răspundea doar după îndelungă meditare şi rugăciune. Spunea: "Trebuie mai întâi să mă gândesc, şi poate că voi putea, în
timp, cu ajutorul lui Dumnezeu, să dau un răspuns". Sfântul Pamvo a fost pentru ucenicii săi un model de iubitor al muncii
