Nurse aide training is a great way to start your health care career. We will provide you with the
entry level skills needed to take the state examination for certification. Our 120-hour program
provides classroom lecture and hands-on laboratory instruction with clinical experience at an
area skilled nursing facility.
Please Note: Those convicted of a felony may not be eligible for clinical experiences and may find it
difficult to secure employment in health care.
Cost: $1215. All course materials, uniform and state testing fees are included.

NURSE AIDE REFRESHER
The Nurse Aide refresher course prepares individuals to take the CT State competency
examination for re-certification. This course can help former nurse aides who want to reenter the
job market in a long term care facility. This course is not required by the State of Connecticut in
order to take the Prometric Nurse Aide examination. Your name must appear on the PrometricCT nurse aide registry as a “lapsed” nurse aide to enroll in this program. The program offers up
to 60 hours of review and practice in the classroom and skills lab.
Clinical time at a long term care facility is not part of the refresher program. The refresher
program is available in conjunction with our regularly scheduled nurse aide classes and as space
permits. For a schedule of upcoming classes refer to the previous page.

The refresher student is responsible to register to take the Prometric state examination through an
approved regional test site.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS (HPCT Step 1)
This American Heart Association course teaches CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator
(AED), barrier devices, bag-valve masks and foreign-body airway obstruction relief. This 5-hour
course is intended for the health care professional. Fee includes text and AHA certification.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (HPCT step 1)
Medical Terminology is taught in a condensed and practical application version using a body
systems approach. This is an ideal 24 hour non-credit course for anyone considering working in a
health care setting. You will gain an understanding of the principles of medical terms, the use of
prefixes, suffixes and word roots. You will gain confidence in using medical terminology as you
learn the meanings of common abbreviations and proper pronunciation.

EKG SKILLS (HPCT step 1)
Learn basic skills in obtaining a 12-lead EKG, including proper lead placement, identification of
P, Q, R, S,T wave forms, appropriate skin preparation and learn to identify cardiac anatomy and
function.
Recognize normal versus abnormal electrocardiogram, identify varied rhythms, prevent artifacts
and adapt to unusual patient situations. This course includes classroom and hands-on lab
experience. The textbook can be purchased at the NCCC bookstore.
Please note: This course does not prepare you to be an EKG Technician.

HEALTH CARE PRACTICES (HPCT step 1)
Understanding the health care delivery system and the role that each member plays in delivering
patient care services is integral to being a health care professional. Topics to be covered include
effective communication, organizational structure, patient rights, health care trends, cultural
diversity in health care delivery, customer service, work place safety, ethics and reporting and
documentation.

STEP 2 – classes offered in the Spring semester only.
PHLEBOTOMY (HPCT step 2)
This program teaches the HPCT safe venipuncture and is an excellent refresher for medical
assistants or licensed nurses. Infection control, equipment, blood drawing skills, specimen
handling and special phlebotomy procedures will be covered. This course includes classroom
and skills practice lab. Pre-requisites: CT. Licensed Nurse, Certified Medical Assistant or all
courses listed in Step one

ADVANCED PATIENT SKILLS (HPCT step 2)
This is the final module in the Patient Care Technician program. The course focus is on the care
of the acutely ill, medically complex, post-surgical and post-injury patient in the hospital setting.
It will include the pathophysiology involved in common diseases and the considerations in
caring for these patients. The student will build on the knowledge gained from the previous
HPCT modules through classroom lecture and clinical rotation.
Course requirements may require day, evening, and/or weekend clinical attendance. All
prerequisites listed in Step 1 and Step 2 must be completed prior to registration.

ELDER CARE ASSISTANT
This course will provide the knowledge and skills necessary
to support the frail, elderly to remain in their home. Duties
may include: providing encouragement and supervision of
bathing, dressing and ambulation. Assistants are also
important to maintaining a clean and safe environment. In
Connecticut there is no certification or approved curriculum
for this role and the job title and duties are determined by

This class will provide classroom lecture and demonstrations by a Registered Nurse with handson practice in our skills laboratory. Topics to be covered include professionalism, normal signs
of aging, communicating with people with dementia and hearing loss, safety, fall prevention,
infection control, nutrition and meal preparation, handling linens and bed making. Supervision of
dressing, bathing, positioning and ambulation will be discussed and demonstrated. In addition,
Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED and ServSafe® Food Handler training and certification is
included.
A high school diploma is preferred but not required. The ability to read and convey information
verbally and in writing is required.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

Emergency Medical Technicians respond to health care emergencies such as heart attacks, car
accidents and fires. They provide life support to seriously ill or injured patients before they reach
the hospital.
Successful completion of this course enables the EMT Student to take the National written and
Practical exams for Certification. Successful completion of the national exam allows the student
to get their CT Certification.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
This comprehensive, 60-hour course will prepare students for an entry-level position in a
community, hospital or long-term care setting. It is also an excellent review for the Pharmacy
Technician Certification Board (PTCB) national certification exam. Topics will include medical
terminology specific to the pharmacy; reading and interpreting prescriptions; and defining drugs
by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculation; I.V. flow rate; drug
compounding; and dose conversion. Dispensing of prescriptions; inventory control; billing, and
insurance reimbursement will also be discussed. The course fee does not include the PTCB exam
fee.
Course Pre-requisite:
High School Diploma or GED and fluency in mathematics, conversions and algebra are required
to complete necessary pharmaceutical calculations. Students who have not successfully
completed any college-level course work in mathematics, or are unable to provide a
transcript, will be required to take a mathematics competency test, at no cost, prior to registering.

SERVSAFE/QUALIFIED FOOD OPERATOR COURSE
In this eight hour Serv/Safe course you will learn the standards in food safety, food-borne
diseases and food service sanitation. The successful completion of the exam given at the end of
class certifies you as a Qualified Food Operator, which fulfills the Connecticut Public Health
Code requirement and is a national certification from the National Restaurant Association. This
QFO course is offered bi-monthly.
It is highly recommended that you obtain and review the required ServSafe Manager
textbook prior to the class.
The textbook with the testing sheet can be purchased at the NCCC bookstore.

This workshop will include review of basic anatomy of the adult cardiorespiratory system with hands-on auscultation of heart and lung sounds. Audio

An introduction to electrocardiogram rhythm interpretation. You will
begin with a review of the electrical conduction in the heart and proper

INTRAVENOUS REFRESHER

The focus of this course will be management of peripheral vascular
devices. We will review the relationship between IV fluid
administration and the body’s homeostasis and regulatory functions.
We will discuss the osmolarity of common IV fluids and the
relationship between fluid compartments within the body. Spiking,
priming, and flushing IV lines will be demonstrated. You will be able
to identify fluid and electrolyte imbalances and assess for quick
intervention to mitigate poor patient outcomes. Calculating infusion rates and identifying local
and systemic complications of IV therapy will be included.

FIRST AID and CPR - American Heart Association
Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED is a video-based,
instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills
needed to respond to and manage an emergency until
emergency medical services arrives. Skills covered in
this course include first aid; choking relief in adults,
children, and infants; and what to do for sudden cardiac
arrest in adults, children, and infants. Students learn
skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken
bones, shock and other first aid emergencies.
This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique,
which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’
learning of skills
This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion
card in first aid to meet job, regulatory or other requirements. Upon completion of this course,
students receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid Course Completion Card
that is valid for two years.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (ADULT)
Mental health problems are as common as heart disease, lung disease, and cancer combined.
Mental Health First Aid (Adult) reviews mental health, mental illness, and mental disorders and
its prevalence in the community. Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of a variety of
disorders such as depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, psychosis, and self-injurious
behaviors. MHFA teaches the participants how to offer support to someone who appears to be in
emotional distress and respond to a mental health emergency. Using ALGEE, participants will
learn how to assist in specific situations by encouraging emotional balance, employing self-care
strategies, providing individuals with resources, connecting individuals to support networks
and/or professional help, and supporting individuals in the recovery paradigm.
Please note that participants must attend all four classes to receive a certificate of
completion from Mental Health First Aid USA.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (YOUTH)
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers,
teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring
citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions
challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who
regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges
for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to
help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety,
depression, substance abuse, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior
disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
CERT is a training program that prepares you to help yourself, your family, and your neighbors
in the event of a disaster. During an incident, emergency personnel may not be able to reach
everyone right away. By getting trained in CERT, you will have the skills to help emergency
responders save lives and protect property.
Participants learn how to:

Identify and anticipate hazards
Reduce fire hazards
Extinguish small fires
Assist emergency responders
Conduct light search and rescue
Set up medical treatment areas
Apply basic medical techniques
Help reduce survivor stress
This program is offered FREE of charge, however pre-registration is required.

Getting a Grip on Gender: Working with Transgender Clients and Co-Workers-NEW!
Much of our society, and as a result, the systems within it, live as if world exists in binary form.
Male/female. Masculine/Feminine. Man/Woman. Either/or. The both/and identities inherit in
transgender, gender creative and gender fluid clients (or coworkers) can bring up questions and
concerns. This workshop is designed to address them. This engaging half day workshop will help
participants: Differentiate between orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression
Identify the critical concerns and obstacles unique to transgender, gender fluid and non-binary
people Understand the expectations of CT’s non-discrimination statutes with regard to sexual and
gender minority people Develop a working understanding of gender identity and its impact on
ourselves and our clients Identify helping strategies,
tools and ideas.

include platform analytics and what they mean in terms of your brand. You will leave this session
with a concrete plan to create, tweak, and grow your brand on social media.

She is originally from Maine and enjoys living in the northwest corner of CT. Jayne sits on several
local education boards and can help participants understand how they can promote their civic

Direct Support Professional-NEW!
The Direct Support Professional certificate program prepares students to enter the human service
field working with individuals with disabilities. The 40-hour program will offer students the
opportunity to learn from agency providers who have developed the curriculum, as well as
individuals with disabilities to gain a real life perspective of the roles, responsibilities
and requirements to work in the field. The sequence of course outcomes will include an overview of
disabilities, cultural competence, health and safety, self-advocacy, person centered planning,
community integration, job development and job coaching. Students have the opportunity to job
shadow in both residential and employment settings and to identify career pathways for
advancement to the human services certificate and human services
degree.
Instructors are leaders in their field and manage programs at
local agencies serving people with disabilities.
Course pre-requisite: Students should possess high school level reading
and math skills and basic computer competency.

Real Estate Principles & Practices
This required course for real estate salesperson licensing provides clear explanation of modern real
estate practices and a working knowledge of real estate in Connecticut. Recognized by the Real
Estate Consortium of Community Colleges of Connecticut and approved by the State of Connecticut Real Estate Commission (RPL. 0072) this course meets the minimum 60-hour requirement
outlined by the State. For a summary of the Connecticut Real Estate
Licensing requirements refer to: www.dcp.state.ct.us/licensing.
Property owners, buyers, sellers, and anyone interested in pursuing
real estate careers or operations will find this course beneficial and
rewarding. Those students intending to sit for the State of
Connecticut Real Estate Exam must attend 60 class hours (excluding
the final exam class) and pass this course with a grade of 70 or better.

information on obtaining financing.

Security Officer Certificate
Connecticut General Statutes require that security
officers complete an 8-hour training course to be
eligible for certification. Successful completion of
this course allows the individual to apply for a
Security Officer Identification Card from the State
of Connecticut. Course topics include overview of
basic first aid, search and seizure, the use of force,
basic criminal justice, public safety issues,
Connecticut state statutes concerning security
officers, and state application requirements.
Student must pass the course examination with a
score of 75 percent or better. Bring a state-issued
photo ID to class, plus a notebook, pen/pencil,
and highlighter. It is also suggested that students
bring a lunch.
Applicants are required to submit two sets of fingerprints with their security officer application.
Fingerprints will be done in class. The course fee does not include the approximately $170 paid to
the State of Connecticut when applying for certification. For more information on security officer

Instructor, William Marchand, is the principal of a Connecticut approved security training
company. As a retired Connecticut State Police Sergeant he served as executive officer at the Special

Staying Calm, Cool and Collect Under Stress-NEW!

Bookkeeping Certificate and QuickBooks
This 39-hour course introduces students to entry level bookkeeping principles and procedures.
Students will examine case studies from the text and identify ways to streamline bookkeeping
activities. In addition to the text, practical examples will be examined to better understand
bookkeeping and its application in small and large companies. QuickBooks 2014 is incorporated to
further help students apply accounting principles to this
popular bookkeeping software.
