Discover a little of our history:
Granville’s unique heritage
J.GOMBOUST, Plan de Granville, 1655, gravure sur cuivre, coll. MAHG
J. PUEL, Granville. La Terrasse du Casino, début XXe, carte postale, coll. MAHG
Discovering Granville is, above all, to understand its history and indelible link with the sea. First
as a coastal fort, then home to privateers and fishing port, equipped for deep sea fishing off
Newfoundland, before becoming an elegant seaside resort at the end of the nineteenth century.
Granville gets its name from the Grant family, the first
occupiers after the Vikings. In the fourteenth century,
the English conquered Normandy, with the exception
of Mont-Saint-Michel. In 1439, an Englishman, Sir
Thomas Scalles discovered the Roque du Lihou—la
pointe du Roc—a rocky headland, overlooking the bay
of Mont-Saint-Michel. He built a defending wall and
cut a trench—la Tranchée aux Anglais—through the
cliffs, transforming Granville into an island. But in 1442,

troops defending Mont-Saint-Michel stormed the
bastion and drove the English away. Charles VII of
France, seeing the strategic importance of the site,
decided to build a fortified town here.
Granville’s history is evidenced by its uniquely rich
architecture and built heritage. Take a stroll through
the alleys of the historic upper town, nestling behind
its fortified walls to discover, apart from the breathtaking
views, the Great Gate, the King’s Lodge and Church of
Notre Dame du Cap Lihou. Here, you will find shipowners’ mansions, the former commercial court (now
converted to a charming and intimate theatre) and
houses with stone counters under their windows, from
which a variety of traders sold their wares.
The tour of the Pointe du Roc, via the GR 223 is a must.
From here, surrounded by the sea, you will enjoy stunning viewpoints over the bay to the Carrolles headland
and the Chaussey Isles. Here, you will find the remains
of German bunkers: armed with your smartphone, take
some time to picture Granville as it was during the
Occupation and the Second World War.
Returning to Place Maréchal Foch, immerse yourself
in Granville’s seaside resort: the casino, the ‘Plat
Gousset’ promenade overlooking the beach and saltwater swimming pool. Admire the architecture of grand
seaside villas, before mounting the twisting cliffside
steps that lead to the Christian Dior museum and
gardens, an unmissable visit.

WOMEN IN DIOR,
A portait in sublime elegance
The Christian Dior museum, former childhood home
of the famous couturier, is a place of memories dedicated to the life and work of Christian Dior and the
success of his fashion house. The villa “Les Rhumbs”
is surrounded by a remarkable clifftop garden, overlooking the sea and the Channel Islands. Built and
decorated by Madeleine Dior and her son, Christian,
between 1906 and 1930, the house was a major
source of inspiration for the couturier. Since 1997, a
temporary exhibition has been held each summer
whose theme is linked to the fashion designs of Christian Dior and his fashion house. And, since 2010, an
autumn / winter exhibition has presented the
museum's own permanent collection.
From the fashion designer’s sketches and studio
designs through to catwalk presentation, visitors bring
these creations back to life, adapting each to their
personality and the world in which they evolve. The
Women in Dior exhibition reveals Dior’s clients’ alluring
personalities: aristocrats, stars of screen and stage,
figures of elegance from France and abroad. Dresses,
photographic portraits, drawings, paintings and
mementos, evoke the elegance of the women in Dior.
Magazines show them attending events and society
gatherings. Mementos, anecdotes, family portraits and
press images help to emphasise each one’s own individuality.
This Christian Dior Museum exhibition, part of the
Normandy Impressionist Festival, explores the fashion
designer’s inspiration and design, through the women
who wore the fashion house’s creations.

ports.granville.cci.fr
Granville’s fishing port, former home of the historic
triple-masted ‘Newfoundlander’ fishing boats, is today
the premier French seafood fishing port, thanks to
its artisanal and diverse fishing fleet.
All in all, around 200 fishermen work the fifty boats
that make up the fleet, with an annual haul of about
ten thousand tonnes for sale at auction. The species
most frequently caught off our coast are, of course,
shellfish (scallops, whelks, sea-almonds, and clams);
crustaceans (lobster) cephalopods (cuttlefish) and sea
fish (bream).
The Chamber of Commerce, which manages the port,
works in partnership with Normandie Fraicheur Mer
alongside the professional fishermen to evaluate to
the local produce through certification, as is the case
with the IGP (Indication Géographique Protégée protected geographic indication) obtained for Granville
Bay Whelks the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) for
sustainable lobster and the Label Rouge (red label
quality mark) for deep-frozen white scallops. Such a
variety of seafood for you to sample in our restaurants!

Discover Granville and its surrounds...
Granville is the ideal spot for a tandem skydiving experience. Tandem jumping allows you to enjoy all the thrills
of skydiving. You will be attached to a professional by
way of a tandem harness.
After ascending 3500 m, you will freefall for nearly 50
seconds. Once your parachute opens, you will have
about five minutes to admire Lower Normandy from the
sky as you return to earth, landing just 100 metres from
the beach.
