Governor Duane’s Greetings
How the year has flown by. At the end of June,
we will be in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Lions International Convention helping induct all the new
district governors, which includes DGE Ted Peterson. As your Governor, I have met many great
Lions doing their part of “We Serve”, helping
their communities, helping and entertaining Children at Christmas and Easter, distributing food
baskets to the needy, donating to local causes,
donating to the Districts Parade of Green and
many other donations that have come across their

an honor representing all 5M8 Lions in our district.
Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. It was fun,

to better our communities and the world.

May and June are known as graduation time, whether it’s “Moving Up” from grade school, Middle School or graduation
from High School or college.
PDG Bob and I were invited by the Sauk Rapids Riverside Leo’s to join them for a Senior Recognition Night on Monday
night April 27, 2015. The Sauk Rapids Riverside Lions were invited along with District Governor Duane, the parents and
grandparents of the seniors and of course the Leo members to celebrate those students who were graduating. The 5
students introduced themselves and family members in attendance. DG Duane gave out appreciation awards, pins and
spoke.
The evening brought back memories of long ago when I graduated from High School. There was excitement about what
the future held for me, wondering what it would be. I remember walking along the beach at a lake near my home and
thinking I did not want to be just another grain of sand on the beach, undistinguishable from the others. I wanted to make
a difference to/for someone or something. I at least wanted to be a pebble on the beach, but not as an irritant in somebodies shoe! On the 28th of April, I heard a phrase out of a song that said “that was yesterday and yesterday is gone”,
which got me thinking again about “my“ yesterdays and my thoughts of “making a difference” somewhere.
Lions make a difference. Look at what Lions clubs do in your towns, villages, communities, the State and the World! One
individual could not achieve what we in Lions have done together!
The Leo’s in our towns make a difference in what they do with the Service projects they do. They are learning to become
good members of our community and grow into future leaders and Lions. Getting to meet the Leo’s was great! We as
Lions should find more avenues to work with the Leo’s. If there are more Lions Clubs in the town of these Leos, we should
try to find ways to incorporate the Leo’s in our Lions Clubs. Youth have a lot of energy, creative ideas and laughter.
Leos are optimistic and have a “can do” attitude! We can make a difference by partnering with youth in their lives and
they can make a difference in our lives!
I am closing with the lyrics from a song composed by Gus Kahn and Frank C. Westphal titled “When you come to the end
of the day.”

Here is the status of 5M8 Clubs utilizing e-Calendar as of
May 22. Since last month we have 31 fewer e-Calendar
entries. 2 Clubs have increased the number of their eCalendar entries with 1 of them using their e-Calendar for
the first time. 21 Clubs have used e-Calendar within the
last 8 months. Unfortunately, that means that 58 Clubs
have chosen not to use their Calendar. Using your eCalendar is proving to be very helpful in recruiting new
members. Does that mean that 58 Clubs in District 5M-8
are NOT interested in recruiting new members?
The chart below represents a total number of entries in
their e-Calendar and an average of entries over the 8
months. Keep up the good work!

The next Lions World Wide Week of Service is quickly approaching! Melvin Jones was the driving force in shaping Lions Clubs International. From launching
the first LION magazine to starting an extension program to help expand membership,
Melvin set the tone for the entire organization. A few years before his passing, the Lions International Board of Directors added “Founder” to Melvin’s title of Secretary-General. But
even this new title could not capture the immense impact he made on the association.

Youth Exchange 2015 in Minnesota
Youth will be arriving from all over the globe beginning in early July and departing in late July. Japanese youth arrive just before camp and will
have a host family experience after camp. Camp Spicer is the time all the youth come together from July 18-26th.
Share a little of the world with your family, town, and Lions Club - consider hosting a youth prior to camp. Share your culture/ their culture.
- Share the hosting experience with another family if it fits your schedule better. You provide room and board - the youth have spending
money for entertainment, souvenirs, emergencies, etc. I'm happy to answer any and all questions or concerns that may stand in the way of a family hosting!

Can Do Canines – June, 2015
Thanks to the support of Lions Clubs across 5M, Can Do Canines continues to train
specially trained for people with disabilities and provide them to those in need,
free of charge.
Attention Lions! Save the date for the Can Do Woofaroo. Our annual fundraising
walk (with dogs!) will take place on Saturday, September 12 at our facility in New
Hope, Minn. Keep an eye out for details on how to get involved in next month’s
issue!
In the meantime, here is a powerful story about a recent graduate, Sandy McKie ,
who was recently partnered with a Can Do Canines Hearing Assist Dog named
Alea. And, thank you for your continued support of our organization!
A Little Bit of Comfort

One of Sandy McKie’s favorite quotes is from Neale Donald Walsh, who states …
“life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Little did Sandy know that being
diagnosed with degenerative adult onset hearing loss in both ears would make her
live out of her comfort zone 24/7.
In the beginning, her life didn’t change drastically. The hearing aids, amplified
phone, and audio assistance devices she bought helped. She told family and
friends, but not co-workers, about her condition and life went on.
However, through the years, each check-up revealed increased hearing loss, and everyday life became more difficult. Sandy, who
works at a junior high school in Scandia, Minn., found herself relying on co-workers more and more to alert her to the bells, alarms,
and announcements she could no longer hear.
“And at home, I wasn’t doing much better.” Sandy says. “I burned meals, had an oven fire—due to not hearing the timer—and was
late for work because I couldn’t hear the alarm.”
After expressing her frustrations, her audiologist suggested applying for a Hearing Assist Dog with Can Do Canines. Almost a year
later, Sandy met Alea, a terrier-mix, adopted from the Animal Humane Society and trained by Can Do Canines. Sandy says that
Alea has transformed her life in so many ways by alerting her to sounds both at work and at home.
“At home, Alea is able to alert me to alarms, timers and, because I live in a rural area, deer, crows and other critters,” Sandy says “At
work, she alerts me to bells, announcements and drills. I am confident that if any emergency situation should arise she will alert me to
that as well.”
When she’s not working, Alea is like any other dog who loves to run outside,
play and fetch. Sandy has begun having Alea pick up items such as keys when
she drops them, because she can’t hear the sound. As a result, Alea has begun
to pick up everything for a reward. Sandy is hoping that housekeeping will be
next!
Sandy says she is eternally grateful to Can Do Canines for this gift of an assistance dog. She no longer feels sad or anxious about her hearing loss.
“Yes, my life will continue to change as everyone’s does,” Sandy says. “But
with Alea’s help, she will push me past my comfort zone with confidence.”

As president of a Lions club for a full term or major potion thereof, and a member of the
board of directors of a Lions club for no less than two (2) additional years; and As zone
chairperson or region chairperson or cabinet secretary and/or treasurer for a full term
or major portion thereof. With none of the above being accomplished concurrently.

Presidential Certificate of Appreciation
This recipient of the President’s Certificate of Appreciation is responsible for
saving lives! As both Past District Governor and Past Council Chair, this recipient
has served on both the Hearing and Diabetes Foundations. So now you are
narrowing the choices and YES – the recipient of the President’s Certificate of
Appreciation is Past Council Chair Judy Loken.
PCC Judy has the distinction of bringing the Diabetes Foundation to one of three
major foundations our multiple supports. With her guidance, the foundation has
become a major force in education and research. Lion Judy has led the Diabetes Foundation to new heights. With this accomplished, the Diabetes Foundation,
in conjunction with the University of Minnesota, is leading the nation in islet transplantation.

With foundation status of only seven years, the Diabetes Foundation is really the new kid on the block. Lion Judy was extremely
instrumental in the reorganization of fractional groups supporting the Diabetes effort.
In the words of a Lion currently serving on the Diabetes Foundation, “Lion Judy is doing a fantastic job as Chairperson”. As a leading cause of death in our nation, we have much to be grateful to all on the Diabetes Foundation, but especially for its leader, Chairperson Judy Loken. I present this President’s Certificate of Appreciation to PCC Judy Loken.

First of all, I would like to thank DG Duane for the pleasure of serving on his district cabinet for the Lions year
of 2014-2015. It has been wonderful experience to watch and learn from District Governor Duane on his journey this year.
Thank you to all who took the time to fill out and return the questionnaire in the last newsletter. I wanted to be
able to make OUR District Newsletter the best it can be. I must be doing something right with the newsletter.
At the cabinet meeting, DG Duane presented me with Lions Multiple District 5M Certificate of Appreciation recognizing me for my dedication, commitment and distinguished service to communicating the work of Lions, which
was signed by MD5M Council Chair Earl Orvik and MD5M Public Relations Chair
Erin Beck. Thank you CC Earl and Lion Erin for this honor that you presented me.
I am very excited to a part of next years cabinet as Publicity / Newsletter Chair
again. I am very honored it be a part of DGE Ted Peterson’s leadership.

Cabinet Meeting Guest
The last meeting of the 5M8 District Cabinet Meeting was held on May 20th at Michaels in
St. Cloud. The guest speaker at the meeting was
Hanna Elshoff, who is riding across country on a
Solar Powered Tri-Cycle. On her way across
country she is raising funds for Leader Dog for the
Blind. Hanna had wonderful stories of her life
and it was a joy to have her share them with us at
the Cabinet Meeting. Thank you Hanna for sharing your journeys with us.

Now that the conventions are all over and our Lions years is at an end, I have a question for all of you and I
am hoping you all respond back with something…
Is your Mid Winter Conventions Kid Friendly?
This has been the first year I have noticed that we are not. It was a last minute scurry to find a babysitter to
come into the hotel to watch 6 kids so the parents could go to the Governors Banquet. The youngest of the
kids was not a happy camper with being thrown into an unknown babysitter at last minute.
Since most clubs are striving to obtain younger members, is a kid friend convention something we should
think about doing to attract family members to come to the hotels to participate in a family weekend?

The District 5M8 Officer Training/GLT Team would like to thank all of our Lions and
Leos who attended and for being a huge part of this years' training sessions.
A special thank you to the Officer Training Team and program presenters, for doing outstanding jobs. Also, to those Host Lions Clubs and Lions for arranging facilities, and
providing the very delicious treats. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to our DG
Duane, DGE Ted, 1VDGE Judy, Zone Chairs, and everyone else who promoted these
training sessions. Great job everyone and thanks.

Panel Nominations
Do you know a Leo or Lion who would make a great addition to the Leo Club Program Advisory Panel? The Leo Advisory Panel is a communication vehicle for Leos and Lions
to share ideas about the program with Lions Clubs International. The panel provides
Leos and Lions with an opportunity to represent their respective constituents while
evaluating matters which affect the program. If you know a Leo or Lion that meets

You Are Invited to Camp Needlepoint & EXPO!
The American Diabetes Association, Minnesota Area is currently planning our two largest
programs of the year: Camp Needlepoint/Daypoint and our Diabetes Expo. I personally
want to invite the members of your club to visit one or both of these programs this year.
Camp Needlepoint sessions are Sunday, August 16 to Saturday, August 22 and Sunday,
August 23 to Saturday, August 29. Since registration and camper pick-up are the Sundays and Saturdays, we ask that you schedule a day during the week. The time at camp
will include a tour of the camp facility, lunch with the campers and an opportunity to meet
the medical staff, counselors and campers. Camp is located just south of Hudson, Wisconsin. Contact Susan Klimek at 763-593-5333, ext. 6591 or email [email protected] to
schedule your visit. We ask that you not show up without first contacting us as we need to
know who is on-site for the safety of the campers and staff.
Our Diabetes Expo will be held on Saturday, October 10th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at
the Minneapolis Convention Center, Hall E. It is billed as “everything you need to know
about diabetes under one roof” including workshops, cooking demonstrations, fitness activities, free health screenings, an “Ask the Expert” area, and vendors offering the latest
diabetes products and services. Last year over 8,300 people attended and we’re expecting more this year. As a Lion, you and/or your club can get involved in several ways:
We invite you to come to learn more about diabetes.
We need many day-of-event volunteers for this activity. Lions Clubs may want to volunteer
as a club. Many clubs helped last year; by wearing their vests they gained more recognition for Lions Clubs and what they do in the community. Volunteer for a few hours (time
slots are 8:15 AM – 12:00 PM or 11:30 AM – 3:15 PM) or for the entire day. Please contact Molly Duerr at 763-593-5333, ext. 6652 or at [email protected] if you or a
club would like to volunteer.
Several areas outside of the Twin Cities worked on organizing buses to and from the Expo
for members of their community. Clubs from several communities in your district could set
up a bus route with several stops to pick up people. Work with your local clinics, hospitals,
churches, etc. to get the word out. If you are thinking about having a bus please contact
Molly Duerr at 763-593-5333, ext. 6652 or [email protected] for more information.
All people will have free admission to the Expo and there will be free bus parking at the
Minneapolis Convention Center.
We appreciate the support we have received from Lions Clubs in the past and invite you
now to see how your funding is helping people with diabetes.
