Editorial
Yes, it’s here again, after a couple of months
we are updating you with the local news,
views and gossip and forthcoming autumn
events: the front cover features Ali & Beggie
leaving St Mary’s after their wedding on
3rd August. Though they only came from
Chinnor, a double decker bus brought most
of the guests, meanwhile Beggie, looking
beautiful, arrived in a vintage Rolls (right)
which matched the colour of her dress.
We have a lovely picture of new arrival
Annabelle Ward to Gemma and James, and
a request for temporary accommodation
from Gemma’s parents, from France,
wanting to stay for a couple of months in
October and November.
We say a very sad farewell to Jan Burrows
who has passed away, written by her WI friends. St Mary’s was packed with
family, friends and members of Princes Risborough Bowls Club - she will be
greatly missed by us all. Our sympathy goes to the family, and in particular John
who is slowly coming to terms with losing his beloved Jan.
We also say a fond farewell to Louise and Max and family leaving the Crown
after five years, but are delighted that they are moving only a short distance
away so we can keep in touch. We have news of their successors at the Crown Caroline and Oliver, and following a tremendous opening night look forward to
their time here.
We have reports from the usual array of Village talent covering Church and WI
news, Ladybird, the Cricket Club and the OSR, including the winners of the August
and September monthly draw. The Diary Dates cover events through the Autumn
months and in particular a Quiz Night in October for the Village Defibrillator
Group, followed in November with a chance to join Nick Potts organising a World
War I Anniversary Quiz night, raising money for a march across Belgium.
There is a strong movement in the village to have a Defibrillator installed and
the group have sought advice, met with a supplier, discussed costs, sighting,
training, ongoing charges etc. and are now in the process of raising the £3,000
required. Apart from the Sydenham Fayre grant their first effort was the ‘Sexy
Car Wash’ charging £5 a car, and courtesy of Jerry & Paula, using the Inn at
Emmington car park and proved a great success raising £185 in the 3 hour stint.

Annual Pet Service on 14th July.
This was again an outstanding success and
Revd. Peter Wainwright warmly led the
event organised enthusiastically by Fi and
Gilly and featuring 11 children, 26 adults, 8
dogs, 4 fish, a tortoise, a gerbil, a hamster
and Gilly’s wonderful pony Texie who
allowed Isabelle to lead him into church.
A lovely friendly occasion
enjoyed by all.

Songs of Praise
In July we held our first short service featuring hymns previously chosen by
members of the congregation. This went down well with 21 adults and three
children attending and following its success the August numbers increased
to 30 adults and four visiting grandchildren. We had a delightful singsong
featuring six popular hymns, prayers led by Adèle and a tongue in cheek poem
read by Fi Kermack which we have printed below.
As we have Harvest supper in September the next Songs of Praise will be on
27th October. If you have a special or favourite hymn you would like us to sing
then please contact Siobhan or Gilly in good time for the choir to rehearse.
17th Century Nun’s Prayer
Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself, that I am growing older and will
someday be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on
every subject and on every occasion.
Release me from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs.
Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of
wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest Lord that I want a few
friends at the end.
Keep my mind free from the recital of
endless details; give me wings to get
to the point. Seal my lips on my aches
and pains. They are increasing, and
love of rehearsing them is becoming
sweeter as the years go by. I dare not
ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales
of others’ pains, but help me to endure
them with patience.
I dare not ask for improved memory,
but for a growing humility and a
lessing cocksureness when my memory
seems to clash with the memories of
others. Teach me the glorious lesson
that occasionally I may be mistaken.
Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not
want to be a Saint - some of them are

talents in unexpected people. And, give
me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so.

Ride and Stride
We are again hoping for a lovely day on Saturday 14th September. Who will visit
the most churches? It is always a fun activity to take part in. Do beg or borrow
a bicycle, ride or walk, and you will be surprised how many local churches you
can reach between 10am and 6pm. There are sponsor forms in the church on
the font, but they can also be collected from Adèle. We also need volunteers
who are willing to sit in the Church and do either a half or an hour’s slot (which
ever you prefer), to welcome the riders and offer drinks and biscuits which are
provided. If it is a lovely day you can sit in the sun outside the church any time
from 10am to 6pm. It is very easy doing this so please ring Adèle Stancliffe on
352805. All the money raised is for the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust,
which gives grants to preserve Churches. Half the money raised goes to the
Trust and the other half comes straight back to St Mary’s, Sydenham. In the past
we have received money from this Trust to help preserve our stonework. So the
day is well worth supporting, so do come along.

Harvest Festival
Please come along and support the St Mary’s Harvest on Sunday 22nd September
for a 4pm service with Revd Peter Wainwright. The Harvest theme will include
poems, Hymns and our usual children’s ‘hunt for fruit and vegetables’ hidden
around the church. This will be
followed by tea and coffee and
nibbles in the OSR. You are invited
to join us and if possible bring
along a plate of sandwiches, cake
or snacks to share.

News from Sydenham WI
We’ve had a summer break since the last issue but that
has not stopped us enjoying a round of activities and
discovering new places in enjoyable company. From
the Hell Fire caves in West Wycombe to the wonderful
setting of the gardens at Waterperry and our reports
below give a flavour of some of these. We meet
monthly and welcome anyone who would like to join in – perhaps the October
meeting may appeal (see page 9). Contact: Fi on 352990 to find out more.
July Monthly Meeting
On July 18th during the afternoon, we assembled some garden games in
the setting of Siobhan and Lloyds’ spacious garden. The sun was out and
temperature very warm!
Around 6.00pm attending members arrived with a plate of canapés with a
delicious variety of goodies to choose from. Jugs of Pimms with lashings of fruit
and mint were prepared and a refreshing alternative of pink sparkling wine,
combined with ginger beer, lemonade and raspberries as well as non alcoholic
drinks were served. A good number of members plus partners came, and a

relaxing, chatty evening then followed. After a couple of hours the games
(which were rather ignored at the start), suddenly sprung into action. Quoits,
a mini croquet round, boule and badminton, for the more energetic, amongst
others were enjoyed by everyone.
By 9.00pm the wonderful evening drew to a close. Thanks very much to
Siobhan and Lloyd for their hospitality and to those who provided the games,
goodies and cheer.

Hell Fire Caves
A happy band of WI members, partners and family headed for the Hell Fire Caves
at West Wycombe. So often we overlook local places of interest always intending to
go someday! - Well go soon as they are worth a visit and free if you are a National
Trust member. Its a veritable warren below ground and were created when
material was removed to build a road from West Wycombe to High Wycombe but
had the added advantage of giving work to men in a period of bad harvests.
It was also the meeting place for the Hell Fire club. It was then time for a cup of
tea and piece of cake (all the scones had gone so no cream tea!) in the courtyard
by the entrance.
Another lovely afternoon spent in the company of friends - what more could
you want?

5 Go To See Sherlock Holmes at Waterperry
On the evening of Thursday 15th August, 5 of us, Sandra and Gilly, plus
husbands, and a “nearly Villager” John, set off in glorious sunshine to the
beautiful setting of Waterperry Gardens to watch a performance by 4 actors
from the Pantaloons Theatre Company all about Sherlock Holmes.
Just before we got to Wheatley, the Heavens opened and we wondered if we
should have stayed at home! However, in true British style, the rain stopped as
quickly as it had started and it was warm anyway, so we unloaded our chairs,
wine, nibbles and hot drinks for the interval, and proceeded to the lawns to
find a spot. There was a good number in the audience and the evening proved
to be very well worthwhile. The players, from before the actual “curtains up”
were mingling with the audience and encouraging participation and this carried
on through the evening. They had cleverly woven many of the well-known
cases together in an amusing, mysterious way via acting, playing instruments,
changing characters and costumes and singing.
I think we all would recommend the company in the future. We did have to put
up umbrellas for a very short time but it all added to the fun and we came back
quite dry.

Our October meeting on the 17th is a fashion show by Country Casuals of
Thame to be modelled by members, so Jerry Hall and Kate Moss watch out!!
Everyone is welcome to this event so come along to the OSR at 7.45pm for an
introduction to the colours, shapes and styles for this Autumn and Christmas.

Jan Burrows
Our final piece this month and reported with enormous sadness is that Jan
Burrows, a stalwart WI member passed away on the 28th July after a battle
with a rare and aggressive cancer. She put up such a brave fight and remained
positive throughout in true Jan style. She was the person you were always
pleased to hear was joining you on an outing as you knew she was going to
provide great company: Jan was always the first to volunteer to make the exhibit
for a WI competition or help out with some committee duty or bake a plateful
of delicious buns and cakes with the most yummy icing ever. She willingly
created and lovingly stitched the WI banner and even mended the pulpit cloth
for St Mary’s Church. Our lovely Jan provided laughter and fun wherever she
was present and her legendary quiz questions provided much merriment at our
Xmas parties and will be remembered for evermore with a chuckle. Her funeral
service at St Mary’s and reception afterwards held in the Princes Risborough
Bowls Club were both packed and a testimony to just how popular and well
loved Jan was. Ann, Jan’s childhood friend gave a very moving eulogy detailing
her busy life, both as a primary school teacher and wonderful mother and
homemaker to children Graham and Elaine and we print three paragraphs of it
below. Thank you Jan for being such a wonderful and involved WI member, a
friend to us all and one in a million.

“When John and Jan first got together they had very little but were extremely
happy in their mobile home in Little Marlow and then worked hard to make two
lovely homes for themselves, one at Widmer End and their beautiful bungalow
at Sydenham. This was therefore the place that Jan wanted to spend her last
few weeks after finding out that the cancer she had was extremely rare and
so very aggressive, John made this happen and Jan died peacefully with John,
Graham and Elaine by her side.
Jan had this amazing presence and ability of being able to touch us all with her
true kindness, tenderness, thoughtfulness, unselfishness and her love of all things
simple and fun.
One of the last things Jan said to me was that she wanted her funeral to be
happy. Well, dearest wife, mother, mam-mar and friend, that is a bit of a tall
order but we will do our best….”

Village Bits & Pieces
The Crown
After five wonderful years at The Crown, Max, Louise, Alice, Christopher and
Chelsea have moved on from Sydenham. It was very clear from the amazing
turnout at their farewell party on 10th August just how popular they are and how
much they will be missed. They were presented with an album with photos of
their many customers and messages of good luck for the future. Madeleine also
organised a collection for them and the result was so amazing that they will be
able to have a visit to Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons as well as choosing some gifts
for themselves.
We also have to say ‘cheerio’ to Kim who worked tirelessly in the kitchen
producing those delicious puddings, but you can now find her at the Inn at
Emmington. She was presented with a pendant with a crown as a memento of her
time in the centre of the village.
Max and Louise will be starting up their new business in another Crown opposite
another St. Mary’s church (it was obviously meant to be!) - at Charlton-on-Otmoor.
I’m sure they’ll let us know when they’re up and running and we’ll definitely be
making a visit......or two...!
We wish them all the very best for the future and want to say a huge thank you for
everything they’ve done to make the
Crown what it is today.
However, things move on and we’re
delighted to welcome Oliver and
Caroline to the village. They moved in
the day Max and Louise left and, after
settling in for the first few days, held
their launch party on 17th August. This
was another opportunity for the village
to turn out in force to meet them and
enjoy a delicious supper of spit roasted
lamb and salads in the garden. They
have come from Amersham and have
much experience in the pub/restaurant
trade. Also moving into the Crown is
Rob who will be working with Oliver
in the kitchen. So a big welcome to all
of you and we very much hope you’ll
enjoy being in Sydenham and, more
importantly, enjoy running the Crown!

World Challenge Travels
Four young villagers have been on World Challenge expeditions this summer and
Lucy Potts has written an exclusive Newsletter report below. We hope to include
reports from Cecily Church, Hannah Isherwood and Dan Lamb in future issues.
As many of you will know this summer I went to Madagascar. I had the most
amazing time! Madagascar is a beautiful country with so much untouched
land. I spent some of my time in a village called Abohimahamasitra building a
women’s institute where the women of the village can go and do their weaving
and then sell their products to make money. I pointed, cemented and painted

the walls and helped put on the roof. In the afternoons we taught all the village
of all ages to speak English. We did songs and games to help them learn. It was
great fun and I enjoyed knowing that I was helping to improve these people’s
lives. I also trekked around Madagascar. I got to see the beautiful rainforests
and experience the Madagascan culture. The treks were tough but so worth it.
I also saw lemurs which was very exciting. I just wanted to say a big thank you
to everyone who supported me in raising money for this trip. It was the best
experience of my life. Once again thank you!

Leaving Home
It’s that time of year when the senior school children either take up or resume a
place at university. From the Maitland family, Tom is off to LSE to do a Masters,
Rachel is off to Leeds to read French and Ellie is off to Birmingham to read
Chemistry. Cecily Church is going to St. Catherine’s Cambridge to read Geography
whilst just across from her Adam Isherwood will be studying Natural Sciences at
Corpus Christi College. Max Lamb will be returning to Coventry. The bar staff at
the Crown will be without not only Ellie but also Jess who is off to Leeds.

Krzysia Gossage has been achieving great heights….not only has she received
an award at a ceremony in the Chapel of Exeter College Oxford by the Vice
Chancellor for her 25 years voluntary service with the disabled charity KEEN.
She has also been made a ‘Distinguished Friend of the University’!!
Martin, her very proud husband is delighted for her….as we all are.

News from Ladybird Pre-School, Sydenham
Leavers and joiners
This time of year always comes with mixed emotions as we have a number of
children leaving us for “big school”. They will be much missed and we wish
them and their parents and carers all the best as they embark on their exciting
journey into school.
We are starting to look forward to a new autumn term and we welcome all the
children that are staying with us or joining for the first time.

Sydenham News, it was with great
sadness that we said goodbye to
member of staff, Annette Page, who
has been with us for an amazing 22
years! She has been a loved and valued
member of staff and we wish her all
the best for a happy retirement. We
were really pleased that parents of
Ladybirds children, both past and
present, came to the Old School Room
on a balmy evening in July for a
surprise party for Annette. It was a lovely occasion and many old friends came
together to share memories, eat a lovely buffet prepared by staff and supporters
and marvel at the wonderful cake prepared by Rebecca.
Annette would like to thank everyone who contributed towards her leaving gift
and memories box and to those of you who came to her retirement party.
Committee news
Members of the committee manned a stall on a blistering hot day at the St.
Andrew’s Carnival and Fete in July and took the opportunity to speak to local
parents and spread the news about places at Ladybirds in September. We
have also had a small exhibition at Chinnor Library and put a leaflet into the
Chinnor Pump to raise awareness of the pre-school. We hope that this will
encourage parents to join us in September in advance of our proposed move to
St Andrew’s in Chinnor in the New Year.
We’d also like to let everyone know that Ladybirds is on Facebook, so please
look us up and “like” our page so that we can increase awareness of our
activities. Just search for Ladybird Pre-School Sydenham.

Future fundraising
We are planning a number of exciting
fundraising events for the autumn/
winter term, so please look out for
details! They include cupcake decorating
evenings in October, run by our very
own Rebecca Wood, a Christmas wreath
making evening which will be run by a
Covent Garden Floristry School Teacher.
Also look out for details of our second Christmas Craft Event, which was a
huge hit last year, giving kids the opportunity to make a selection of wonderful
Christmas crafts. More details will be available very soon.

Autumn Entertainment
We don’t want to hasten along the dark nights, but we can offer you some
typical Sydenham village evening entertainment in the form of a couple of Quiz
Nights with a variety of questions being set respectively by Roy and Gordon.
Quiz Night supporting a Village Defibrillator. Saturday 19th October in the OSR
The evening will be in the usual format gathering at 7.30 for an 8pm start
featuring, 10 rounds of General Knowledge questions with an autumn supper
at the interval and including a raffle. Tickets are only £7.50 a head so why not
start getting your teams together (up to 8), and ring Gilly or Roy on 353887.
A fun evening is guaranteed and all moneys raised will go to the Defibrillator Funds.
Community Public Access Defibrillation (cPAD)
Dear Sydenham villagers
You will probably have heard that the village is raising money to install a
community defibrillator. The details of its benefits are highlighted below.
Various groups are coming up with ideas to assist with raising the required
£3000. We have already been allotted £500
from the 2013 Fayre, the “Sexy carwash boys”
earned another £185 and we have a special quiz
arranged for 19th October in the OSR. As this
equipment is for “the village” we would like as
many people as possible to get involved. Please
support the various initiatives that have been
planned (watch out for further details in the
Newsletter or via Sydenham Voice) or let us know
of any other fundraising ideas you may have.

Alternatively, if you feel that it is easier to donate an amount to the fund, then
we will gratefully receive envelopes* with DEFIBRILLATOR written on the front.
Please watch out for various events taking place in the village over the next
few months. Book sales, story mornings, the “Halloween Hash”, pocket money
pennies, coffee mornings, possibly a bridge afternoon. We are investigating
organising a “Midnight steeple chase” and the choir will put on a concert next
February. These are just some of the exciting entertainments that people or
village groups have suggested. We are inviting a representative from CHT, the
supporting organisation to tell us all about the benefits and workings of the
defibrillator and answer questions and will advise you when the date is known.

Community Public Access Defibrillation (cPAD)
The national charity The Community HeartBeat Trust is working closely
with ambulance services across the country to increase the penetration of
defibrillators into the community.
Over the past 10 years ambulance services have had increasing targets for
delivery of service, including the 8 minutes target for Cat A calls. Whilst in
cities and towns this is much easier to achieve, in rural communities this is
a much harder prospect. As a result the Ambulance Service was innovative
in looking for additional ways to reach these demanding targets and in early
2000, the first Community First Responder schemes were established. In 2011
there are now several hundred of such schemes around the country, typified by
community volunteers who give their time to support the Ambulance service in
some Cat A calls.

However one area still needs
addressing - the Sudden Cardiac
Arrest. Typically these are rapid
onset events and, depending upon
the figures you consider, the life
expectancy of the patient decreases
up to 23% per minute from the
event. Time is therefore critical, and
it was for this reason that many
static sites for defibrillators have
been established, in airports, train
stations, shopping centres.
Community Public Access defibrillation (cPAD) has only become a reality
for local communities in the past couple of years as the technology and the
guidelines from the governing agencies such as the UK resuscitation council
(UKRC) have been amended. The need for training has been reduced for the
latest compliant defibrillation equipment and although still desirable, is not
necessary even for members of the public. cPAD schemes place an automatic or
semi automatic defibrillator, a device used to treat Sudden Cardiac Arrest, in a
convenient location in a vandal resistant box. The equipment can be accessed by
anyone to assist a patient with a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). In an event, 999
must be called and the ambulance service will give the access code to the box to
enable the defibrillator to be used, although the keycode is also kept by locally
trained people as well, and in some cases are unlocked.
With the central co-ordination and direction of such charities as the Community
HeartBeat Trust, standardisation of approach; training and equipment support;
and increased purchasing power, is available to the benefit of the local
community. It also enables a central source of liaison with the Ambulance
services, PCTs and Department of Health, as well as other charities and
organisations involved in health in the community.

Sydenham Halloween Hash
Help raise money for the new defibrillator and get fit at the new Sydenham
Halloween Hash.
10.30am on Sunday 3rd November 2013
For those who haven’t heard of a hash, it’s a bit like hunting, but on foot and
instead of following foxes and hounds, you follow a trail of flour. This will
wind through the footpaths and tracks around Sydenham. It’s great fun and
afterwards everyone can get together in the pub for a drink and some food.
You can run or walk, either on your own, or as part as a team. The distance will
depend on the age and ability of the entrants.
The Sydenham Halloween Hash is fundamentally a free event as there will be
no first aiders or insurance. It is just people getting together for a run/ walk...
however clearly that won’t help our defibrillator cause! So in order to raise
money, we are asking for a voluntary donation (suggest £10).
I will organise food in the pub afterwards. If you are interested, please call

Quiz Night on 16 November
I am a supporter of our Armed Forces. My father was a serving soldier in the
second world war who had rather a grim time of it and I have now gained a
relative in Major Tom Kelly who is married to one of my unbelievably beautiful
nieces. Tom is a frequent visitor to the village.
I have had the privilege of reading Tom’s account of his time in Afghanistan
and a very sobering read it was. I guess for most of us war is something our
neighbour Fiona Bruce reports on and not something we have ever had to or
hopefully ever will have to face. Politics aside, these young people go off to
serve Queen and country with a mission to allow the likes of me to enjoy the
life I do. For that I feel I owe them.
We are now approaching the 100 year “anniversary” of the start of World War I.
There will I am sure be many remembrances for this and Tom would like to
commemorate a famous victory his regiment fought at Gheluvelt. He describes
it as true “end of days” stuff, where the heroism and bravery of a few overcame
the many, and in a situation where a loss could have changed the face of the

The plan is for Tom to journey his battalion through the Worcester’s and
Foresters actions in the Great War, including Neuve Chapelle, The Somme,
Passchendaele, The Kaisers Spring Offensive and the final allied advance to

victory and then on to the Battle Honour by recreating the route taken by the 2nd
Bn The Worcester Regiment for their assault onto the Gheluvelt chateau in 1914.
What I particularly like about this project is part of the ambition, which is to
educate these serving soldiers: “in order to gain a greater appreciation for
the application of the core values and standards in the face of adversity and
identify/learn the enduring lessons of warfare for integration into their own
decision making on the modern battlefield”.
I have agreed to help him raise the very small amount of money necessary to
do this and we are working on a number of schemes. For one of these, Gordon
McLeod has kindly offered to run a “military themed” quiz night on November
16th. We will have a fun evening with a military raffle and some interesting
auction items. As a taster, Fiona Bruce has kindly offered to auction either an
opportunity to see the news being put together and broadcast, or a day at the
filming of the Antiques road show with a similar aim. Tom is going to organise a
day visit to his troops with the opportunity to do things like ‘fire a machine gun’
etc! There will be more!

The 100 Club continues to be the dominant fundraiser for the Old School Room
and raised over £1600 this year with 138 ‘numbers’ purchased, and we gave over
£800 to the lucky monthly winners. Congratulations to all the winners and many

Annabelle Grace Ward was born to
James and Gemma on Thursday 18th
July at 6.50am. Mother and daughter
did incredibly well and should be
very proud. They left hospital in the
afternoon after some well deserved
sleep; father isn’t quite sure what he is
doing yet but experienced neighbours
assure him he will learn. Annabelle is
healthy and happy and even made it
up to the Crown within 48 hours of
her birth. Thank-you to everyone in the
village who has been so supportive with
gifts, cards and good-wishes. Annabelle
has found a wonderful place to grow up.

Sydenham Cricket Club
The Cricket Club have been
having a fantastic season both
on and off the field. We have
played 9 games, winning 5 and
losing 4 (although we count one
of those as a moral victory!). This
has included what is commonly
acknowledged as the biggest win
in Sydenham’s history, certainly
recently. Away to Great Milton,
the team posted a total of 254
for 9 off 35 over’s, including a
stunning 132 not out by James
Ward. We then bowled out Great
Milton for 83 within 19 over’s,
recording a win of 171 runs.

This was then followed
up by a home win (by
7 runs) against another
team with ‘Great’ in the
title - Great Haseley.
The highlight of the day
was Lloyd McKee taking
the last three wickets,
finishing with impressive
figures of 3 for 16. We
then had an edge of
your seat match against
Haddenham. A poor
batting performance
meant we only made 77
all out and at tea, there
was a sense that the
game was lost. However,
disciplined bowling from
Sydenham, including Toby Roe 1 for 24, Rory Simpson 1 for 14, Rob Lang 3 for
21 and most impressive of all, Dan Bradley 5 for 5 ensured victory.
On Sunday 4 August, almost 50 players, friend and family gathered at Lewknor
for the 3rd Sydenham Ashes - a game between a Captain’s XI and Vice Captain’s
XI. For the second year running, the honours went to Frank Howarth, the vice
captain. It was truly a great day with loads of people from the village (including
dogs and horses) enjoying a good game of cricket and lots to eat and drink, in
the process raising some funds for new kit next year.
Finally, the club had a highly successful tour to North Wiltshire the following
weekend, playing two local teams, winning the first game against Christian
Malford and morally(!?) winning the second game against Kington St Michael
(we allowed a retired player to return onto the field of play who then rather
unsportingly scored the winning run!) Much fun was had, but as the saying goes,
‘what goes on tour, stays on tour’. On the field however, there were several
stand out performances, with the highlight being a resolute stand between
Ed Roe (26) and Mark Kermack (20) at Kington St Michael. This was Mark’s
highest score to date and proof of his dedication to nets and cricket coaching
discussions in The Crown on Wednesday night.
The season is now drawing to a close with two games remaining, but on behalf
of all the club I’d like to thank all those who have come along to support and
help us during the season. We could not do it without you - the club is much
bigger than the 11 who take the field.

The Great Taste Awards organized by the Guild of Fine Food are seen as the
‘Oscars’ of the food and drink world and a benchmark for speciality food
and drink. Some 10,000 products are entered and
judged by 405 specialists over 3 months.
Imagine how thrilled therefore everyone at The
Chiltern Brewery was to win THREE Gold Stars for
2013 for their bottled beers. Ruby Anniversary Ale,
specially brewed to celebrate CAMRA’s Good Beer
Guide’s 40th anniversary, 300’s Old Ale and Bodgers
Barley Wine were all proud winners. Given the
immense level of competition in the awards this is a
real honour and a terrific achievement.
These bottled beers are all available in The Chiltern
Brewery’s delightful brewery shop in their converted
barn at Terrick, near Wendover, itself entered into The Chiltern Society’s
Farmshop Awards. This is a wonderful haven of sumptuous food and drink,
where you can buy the bottled and draught beers and carefully chosen specialist
liqueurs and wines from local producers. There is also a great selection of
amazing food items, many of them, including chocolate, cheese and fudge, made
by local producers with The Chiltern Brewery’s own beer. It is well worth a visit.
One of those beers on offer this September will be The Chiltern Brewery’s latest
seasonal offering, the beautiful Copper Beech Autumn Ale, a moreish smooth
red ale – slightly sweet and gently hopped and well worth a try.
Finally, there are brewery tours held on most Fridays and Saturdays at Terrick.
Lasting one hour, they offer a fascinating insight into the art of the master
brewer and conclude with a tutored beer and food tasting session. A great idea
