The Monte-Carlo TV Xchanges, a two day conference, will take place 9th to 10th June 2009, within the 49th edition of the Festival. The conference will include round table discussions on topics such as international co-production, financing and the impact of new technologies on production within the content business. With a list of well-known keynote speakers daily updated on the TV Festival website, top US and European producers, programming decision makers, financial organizations, government and regional institutions are expected to attend. With the participation of Tuesday 9th June 2009 10 :00 - 11 :15 Round Table One: What new revenue streams can production companies look for ? A number of issues have come together to destabilise the system that is currently in place for financing audiovisual projects. Television channels and production companies alike need to identify or develop new revenue streams, sources of income that are uniquely tailored to multiplatform markets. 11 :45 – 12 :15 Keynote speaker 1 15:00 - 16:15 Round Table Two: Combining new technologies with a new approach to production Creating content specifically designed for digital networks has become an increasingly widespread practice. Established companies have been forced to adopt innovative ways of differentiating themselves from their competitors and of offering content that appeals to consumers. In order to take advantage of these new ways of broadcasting in the most practical and targeted way possible, production companies must change the ways in which content is developed and produced. We will need to explore certain areas of the industry that will be particularly affected, focusing on greater cooperation between the key groups involved in creating content, from the earliest stages of its development to using new writing methods and ensuring the participation of new sources of financial investment. Wednesday 10th June 2009 10 :00 – 10 :30 Keynote speaker 2 11 :00–12 :15 Round Table Three: New trends in television drama The world of television drama is constantly changing. The combination of the scriptwriting crisis of 2008 and an unstable economic climate ushered in a new era of television drama. Budgets are shrinking, formats are evolving and the United States are becoming more receptive to series made in other countries. In Europe, the UK has succeeded in making programmes which are both different and successful, becoming an inspiring creative force for other nations. French television drama is going through a considerable upheaval and new formats are gradually taking over from an older style, a style which continues to remain powerful, however, attracting a wide spectrum of viewers. In this everchanging landscape, which factors will ensure the success of future television dramas? 11 Jury Television Films President of the Jury Joseph Sargent Director (USA) Joseph Sargent directed Sweet Nothing in My Ear; Sybil; Warm Springs, Emmy Award; Something the Lord Made, Emmy Award, AFI Award of Excellence, DGA Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award & opening film 2004 Monte Carlo Festival. Rejecting the insidious form of apartheid that discrimination represents and refusing to accept the notion that exclusion is inevitable, she highlights the changing nature of French society after decolonisation and the consequences of population displacement, acknowledging the cultural and religious problems that result. Each of her films is designed to lead into a debate on social issues – as well as showing her ‘film tools’, she also asks her audiences to respond directly, stimulating discussion, encouraging the public’s input and challenging public authorities, forcing them into taking action on the causes she has espoused. It seeks to reward outstanding documentaries, which combine fascinating topics with a high level of technical expertise. The documentaries may present subjects which are either social or cultural. The competition’s main objective is to celebrate the finest contributions from documentary directors from around the world. The Grand Prix takes place every June in the context of the prestigious MonteCarlo TV Festival, organised by the Principality, which is ideally suited to showcase the event. The winner of the competition is presented with the ARMAN trophy, designed by the renowned sculptor. The directors who place second and third receive, respectively, a silver and a bronze medal. This year the award ceremony takes place on Monday, the 8th of June, at 19:00 in the Salle Empire of the Hôtel de Paris (MonteCarlo). The results of the competition will be announced after a discussion led by Gaston Kaboré, who presides over the jury. Festival prizes > The Special Prize of Prince Rainier III This prize, consisting of a sum of seven thousand five hundred Euros (7,500 €) and a plaque, will be awarded to the programme (in any category) which best deals with nature conservation, the environment, the protection of threatened fauna and flora and the fight against pollution. 27 Partners © Design: www.isopress.fr The Organising Committee of the 49th Monte-Carlo Television Festival would like to thank for their invaluable contribution the following companies : With the official participation of
