ANNUAL REPORT 2013 2013 Utah Zoological Society Board of Directors James E. Hogle, Jr., President Paul M. Dougan, Vice President Patrick Hogle, Secretary/Treasurer J. Scott Anderson Steven Barth Jim Bradley Corey Brand Mission Maura Carabello Analecia Dumke Missy Ekstrom Blake O. Fisher Amy A. Garff John D. Williams Lauryn Wingate Julie Wolfe Utah’s Hogle Zoo nurtures respect and appreciation for the natural world by providing diverse educational, recreational and conservation opportunities. This is accomplished through imaginative exhibits and programs, professional animal care and a commitment to excellence. Message from the Director and President As we entered 2013, construction on the new African Savanna project was accelerating, and that progress continued throughout the year, towards our anticipated opening in May 2014. Other exciting and important activities during the year included the unique and fun LEGO©: Creatures of Habitat exhibition, expansion of both on-site and field conservation programs, the opening of the Lighthouse Point water park, and the development and adoption of a new Master Plan to guide major Zoo improvements through 2030. In addition, we continued our signature events, such as our Zoo Rendezvous fundraiser, our ZooLights! winter holiday celebration, and we reached a milestone in hosting the 20th annual World of the Wild juried art exhibition. Everything mentioned here is designed to create great experiences and connections for our guests. In the course of that pursuit, we welcomed more than one million guests in 2013, making it the fourth year out of five to exceed that milestone in attendance. The core of our mission is to nurture respect and appreciation for the natural world, and that begins with providing the best possible care for our resident Zoo animals. Our Animal and Veterinary departments work as a team to keep every animal in our care in good health, both physically and mentally. Animal welfare goes beyond the basics of food, water, and shelter. We focus on providing appropriate social groupings, environmental enrichment, preventive medicine, and training to facilitate routine examinations and stimulate natural behaviors. All of this and more is detailed in the pages that follow, including our 2013 financial performance. We are proud to have once again finished the year with positive cash flow to enable the continued improvements around the Zoo. The success of 2013 has positioned Utah’s Hogle Zoo to continue being a dynamic and impactful community organization, and we will strive to continue making the Zoo the best it can be: for our animals, our guests, our employees and volunteers, and for everyone in the community who continues to support us. Senior Keepers Bobbie Gordon and Erin Jones trained Jabali, an 8-year-old female, to offer her arm for the procedure, making her a voluntarily participant in her own health care. 2 Animal Enrichment Behavioral Programs Manager Dawn “DeeDee” Neptune received national recognition for her animal enrichment leadership from the following: Association of Zoos and Aquariums Faculty Member for week-long AZA Animal Enrichment Professional Develoment course • Institutional Representative to AZA Behavioral Advisory Group & Animal Welfare Committee • Committee Advisor to AZA Behavioral Husbandry and Animal Welfare Committees American Association of Zoo Keepers • Contributing Presenter to Online Collaborative Learning Webinars • Committee Advisor to AAZK Behavioral Husbandry Committee Association of Zoo Veterinarians • Workshop Co-Presenter, “Elevating Animal Health Through Behavioral Management” In her spare time, Deedee was also Trip Leader of a Conservation Safari to Kenya, and Chair of the first annual “Winos for Rhinos” event, raising more than $14,000 for rhino conservation. Congratulations, DeeDee! 34 3 Conservation: Nature/Wildlife The Zoo had a global presence in our conservation efforts; supporting 32 projects on five continents. General Curator, Dr. Christina Castellano, continues her work in Madagascar, protecting the critically endangered radiated tortoise. Illegally collected tortoises that have been confiscated by the authorities are “repatriated,” where they will be protected under organized community stewardship. The greater sage-grouse is a threatened species. Zoo staff and volunteer conservation activities have resulted in placement of 50,000 warning reflectors on prairie fences to help them avoid colliding with fences in their western Wyoming habitat. In 2013, Hogle Zoo and the Utah Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers raised nearly $30,000 for rhinoceros conservation. 4 Creatures of Habitat, the LEGO© brick animal exhibit, was both fun and educational, teaching guests about Our Wild Aware Utah partnership with the endangered species United States Forest Service, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Utah State University and habitat Extension Services educates Utahns throughout the preservation. state about how to live successfully with wildlife. Conservation: On-Grounds Resources Hogle Zoo is committed to environmentally sustainable practices. During 2013: • We purchased 60,000 kwh of wind power through the Rocky Mountain Power Blue Sky Program. • We generated 75,000 kwh of solar power on top of three of our largest buildings. In addition: We use recycled office and bathroom supplies, recyclable foodservice dishware and waterwise plantings to further reduce our carbon footprint. 97% of the construction-site rubble from our new 4.4 acre African Savanna exhibit was diverted to be reused or recycled. • We used high efficiency light bulbs saving 24,000 kwh. That’s enough energy savings to avoid 200 tons of carbon dioxide or equivalent to planting 2,400 trees! 142 Zoo employees participated in the “Ultimate Alternate Transportation Challenge,” saving more than 30,000 miles they would have driven, commuting by car to the Zoo. Of our two newest large buildings, one (Animal Health Center) has been certified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold, and one (Conservation Resource Center) has an application pending for a similar designation by the U. S. Green Building Council. 5 Education & Volunteers Zoo Volunteer Cody Bollschweiler won the Utah Volunteer of the Year Award in the young adult category. Zoo educators taught close to 4,000 eager young learners. 20 seasonal Eco-Explorers shared 271,357 conservation messages with Zoo guests. 41 Girl Scouts and 214 Boy Scouts attended Zoo classes to earn merit badges. Volunteers 184 volunteers amassed 15,290 hours educating Zoo guests and supporting education programs. Major Donors, Endowment Endowment and Planned Giving: Zoos, by their nature, look to the future. They nurture and conserve our wildlife heritage for future generations. They offer insights into various strategies that can assist in their survival. In 2013, Utah’s Hogle Zoo began actively seeking planned and endowment gifts to ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the educational treasure that is Hogle Zoo. The following people have already made donations toward that effort. Contact the Development Office to be part of this growing number.
