LEADER OF PEOPLE or DOER OF TASKS
I was sent to All Saints Parish to lead you deeper into the Kingdom of God. A pastor is meant to be a leader of
his people and not simply a doer of tasks. He is meant to proclaim a clear vision that will inspire his people to
grow in love of God and neighbour. Too often, however, a pastor is reduced to simply doing the necessary tasks
that keep the parish going. This will not produce growth in a parish but rather gradual decline.
Since coming to All Saints I have worked hard both at tasks and at trying to proclaim a vision. Mainly, however,
I have worked at tasks. My proclaiming of a vision has not been strong enough or consistent enough to produce
any real benefit and I have been unable to form any effective plan for implementing the vision.
This must change. All Saints Parish is meant to grow. I am your leader and I must start to lead. You must step
forward and give me your active support. All Saints is not a little prayer centre or social club. It is the Church of
Jesus Christ, king of the universe, and he wants to do great things in us, through us.
St Benedict Parish
This week I attended the Divine Renovation conference at St Benedict Parish in Halifax. It is a dynamic parish
led by a dynamic pastor Fr James Mallon. St Benedict Parish is on fire with the love of Jesus Christ and it is
growing. Its parishioners talk about their faith with passion. They are deeply engaged in sharing their faith with
others and participate enthusiastically in 70 different ministries and outreach activities.
Here are some lessons about parish growth I learned at St. Benedict: A parish requires a strong leader who is assisted by strong leadership teams. Parishioners need to enter into personal closeness with Jesus Christ, open
themselves to the Holy Spirit and confidently invite others to “come and see.” A parish needs one consistent
evangelization process that is offered to both parishioners and non-believers. A parish cannot do everything and
so it must concentrate its energies on those activities that are most effective in leading people to Christ. Active
involvement of the faithful is the key to parish renewal.
***
Let us start to dream big dreams, to strive for beautiful things, to want more and to become more. Please pray for
me and support me. I am not a natural leader but I know that with your help and in the power of the Holy Spirit I
can lead you forward.
“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle within them the fire of your love.”
Fr Don
