As at July 2013, the European Union has 24 official languages, Bulgarian,
Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German,
Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish,
Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish and Swedish.
Starting out in 1958 with only 4 official languages: Dutch, French, German
and Italian, reflecting the languages of the founding Member States —
Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the
number has gradually grown over the years as more countries have
joined the European Union.
English became an official language in 1973 when the UK and Ireland
joined. There are fewer official languages (24) than Member States (28),
however, as some countries share common languages. German, for
example, is the language of Germany and Austria.

The European Day of Languages is celebrated on 26th September each year
to encourage everybody to learn languages.
In this small booklet you will find examples of the many languages spoken in
Europe. By learning the language of another country one also gets to know
better its culture and people; this may be of great advantage.
