Professor Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor (right), signs a partnership agreement
with Luis Juste, Director UK and Portugal for Santander Universities, to
provide £120,000 over the next three years to fund studentships.
Dear Friends,
It gives me enormous pleasure as Vice-Chancellor of
this great University to introduce the Report to Donors
2008/09. I would like to take this opportunity to
personally thank you for supporting the University of
Exeter in the last year. Your support means so much to us.
In last year’s report, I spoke about the University of
Exeter’s aim of breaking into the top 10 universities in
the UK by 2012. e fantastic news is that e Times league
table published in 2009 ranks Exeter in 9th place out of
more than 100 universities in the UK. We have succeeded
in achieving our goal in 2009 – three years ahead of
schedule. is is a truly stunning achievement.
Exeter’s rise has been remarkable. As Vice-Chancellor, I
would like to personally thank you for helping to turn this
vision into reality. Our journey has been made possible
thanks to your support. You will read in the following
pages how philanthropic gifts are being used to invest in
Exeter’s future as a world-leading university. Every gift
donated is helping fund world-class campuses, research
and graduates. Your support is making a difference.
ank you,
Professor Steve Smith AcSS
Vice-Chancellor

A spirit of
Philanthropy
ank you to our donors
£7.06 million raised
e University of Exeter would like to express its
gratitude to everyone who has supported us. Our
donor list contains the names of people who made
a gift to the University between 1 August 2008 and
31 July 2009.
e University of Exeter has a history of philanthropy. e
names of many buildings around Exeter’s campuses reflect this
tradition. Buildings like Mardon, Washington Singer and
Hatherly represent the names of some of the benefactors
who have shaped Exeter’s history.
We are also very grateful to those individuals who have
requested anonymity for their donations, to those who
have given through payroll giving, and to individuals
who have told us that they have made a pledge to the
University in their wills. We have made every effort to
record your name correctly. If there are any errors
please do tell us so that we can correct them.
is spirit of philanthropy burns brightly today. In 2008/09,
alumni and supporters of the University donated over
£7 million to support Exeter. e pages of this report illustrate
some of the many ways gifts are making a difference.

e contributions made by donors are going further than
ever before. e UK Government has introduced a Matched
Funding Scheme to match donations to universities like Exeter
with public funds and encourage donors throughout the
world to support UK higher education. Under the scheme,
donations to Exeter received before 31 July 2011 are eligible
for a 3:1 match. For every £3 donated to the University, the
Government is now matching it with a further £1. is means
your gifts go further than at any other time in Exeter’s history.

Annual Fund
makes a difference
Donations to the Annual Fund, the University’s annual
fundraising appeal, are supporting a wide range of
projects. e Annual Fund has raised more than £1
million from alumni and supporters since it was created
in 2002. Some of the projects currently being funded
include a new fleet of boats for the University’s Sailing
Club, the development of student allotments and
support for student mentoring. A special disbursement
panel made up of donors, staff and students has been
set up this year to decide which projects should be
funded from the Annual Fund. Here are just a few of
the projects that have been supported.
‘‘
I am delighted to be able to support the Excited about
Science project. It is rather wonderful to be able both
to help to improve the employability of Exeter students
and also to encourage the next generation of scientists.
The country needs more people with science skills and
Exeter is playing a leading role in meeting this need.

Excited about Science
Gifts are helping to fund the Excited about Science
project to inspire young people’s interest in science.
Under the scheme, pupils from local schools who have
no family history of higher education but who show
an aptitude for science, visit the School of Biosciences
for a series of workshops. e project also provides
key employability skills and work experience for
undergraduate students interested in teaching and
careers in science communication.
‘‘
Action After Stroke is an excellent initiative which
not only provides professional development for our
undergraduate and postgraduate students, but also
provides a valuable contribution to the local community.
The financial assistance from alumni and supporters
has had a real impact in supporting the project.
Dr Gary O'Donovan, Lecturer in Sport and
Exercise Medicine (St Luke's)
Action After Stroke
Student Mentoring
Donors are supporting the work of Action After Stroke,
a rehabilitation group based at the St Luke’s campus.
Volunteers, including students and staff, run sessions
for stroke patients twice a week. Funding has been
provided to buy new rehabilitation equipment and to
allow 20 students to train with the British Association
of Cardiac Rehabilitation (BACR).
New students at the University’s Cornwall campus
are being supported by a donor-funded mentoring
project. First-year students will be mentored by a
second or third-year student as part of the scheme.
e scheme will help new students to settle into
University life and provide invaluable employability
skills for second and third-year students.

Celebrating
philanthropy
Classics Library named in honour of benefactor
Guests, staff and students gathered for a
ceremony to name the library and meeting
room within the Department of Classics in
recognition of a longstanding and generous
benefaction to the University. e newly named
Leventis Room, which sits at the very heart of
the Classics department, provides a space for
Classics students and academics to come together
in discussion and debate. e naming recognises
the generous philanthropic support of the
A. G. Leventis Foundation and in particular the
support of Constantine Leventis, the former
Chairman of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, who
in 1998 founded a postgraduate studentship in
Classics at Exeter.

Cricketers from across the local community will be
able to use the centre, as well as University cricket
players. University of Exeter cricket scholar Becky
Williams says: ‘I think it is a superb opportunity
for cricketers in the whole community and students
here at the University. It will allow training all the
year round.’ Meanwhile, schoolboy cricketer
Harrison Folland, 15, a pupil at Blundell’s School,
Tiverton, Devon, who plays for the Devon Under
15 team, adds: ‘It is a great new facility for training.
It will really help cricketers like myself to improve
their game.’
A number of alumni are supporting cricket at the
University. Alumnus John Wakely (Economics 1978)
is helping to fund a cricket coach. Although he
played golf for the University, he played cricket for
the Cullompton Cricket Club, as his parents had
retired to Devon. He says: ‘I played with the club
for several seasons and I recognise how important
village cricket is for local communities. As a result,
I was very pleased to see that the cricket centre
serves not only the University but also the
local community.’

Legacies make

Legacy helps support
University Library
e academic legacy of Professor Andrew Lang (Physics 1944)
is continuing thanks to his bequest to the University of Exeter.
Professor Lang sadly passed away on June 30, 2008. As Emeritus
Professor of Physics at the University of Bristol, the academic
had a distinguished career and pioneered studies in X-ray
diffraction physics. He was an expert on crystal physics and
was widely recognised for his development of the technique of
X-ray topography.
Professor Andrew Lang (Physics
1944) MSc, PhD, FRD 1924–2008
Professor Lang embarked on his academic career after he obtained
a First-Class Honours degree in Physics at e University College of
the South West of England, the predecessor to the University of
Exeter, in 1944. He gained an MSc in 1947, a Cambridge PhD in
1953 and went on to work in industrial research in the UK and in
the United States. In 1954 he was appointed as Assistant Professor
of Physical Metallurgy at Harvard University and then moved to
the University of Bristol to take up a Lectureship in Physics in 1960.
Professor Lang spent the rest of his academic career at Bristol.
roughout his life he was a strong supporter of many charities,
including the University of Exeter. In his will, he made a bequest
to support investment in the University Library amounting to
£80,000. He said the reason he wanted to support the Library
was that one of the most important lessons he learnt at University
was how to study alone.

Professor John Usher, the Head of the
Law School, sadly died suddenly in
September 2008. John was a leader in
European Law and strongly encouraged a
comparative approach to legal study. He
Professor John Usher
began his career at Exeter in 1967, and
helped to establish Exeter as a leading force in the field of European Law.
John was committed to helping students to reach their full potential, and for
this reason a scholarship fund has been established in his name.
e Fund aims to support:
• a hardship fund for undergraduates, especially those studying on schemes
involving a year abroad, such as the LLB with International Study;
• a European Law dissertation prize for a student who produces an
exceptional piece of written work;
• travel bursaries for postgraduate students attending Law conferences
overseas.

Growing talent
Supporting music
Music plays an important part in student life at the
University of Exeter and philanthropy is helping to
support the ongoing development of music.
e Annual Fund has funded the following music

• New piano for use by the Guild.
• Refurbishment of pianos across the University.
• Development of music ensembles at the
Cornwall campus.
• Renovation of the music and drama room in

Volunteering
with impact
Alumni share their talents
More alumni than ever are coming back to the University to share their
time and expertise with students. During Widen Your Options Week in
February, nearly 20 alumni returned to Exeter to volunteer as careers
speakers. e alumni who participated took part in a range of activities,
including talks and mock interview sessions.
Clare Pearce is the Volunteer Officer for the University’s Development and
Alumni Relations Office. She is co-ordinating efforts to provide alumni
with a range of potential volunteering activities. One of the many alumni
who are now volunteering at Exeter is alumna Ruth Lovell (English 2006),
who is a broadcast journalist with the BBC. Ruth is an active volunteer
and has returned to Exeter on numerous occasions to share her first-hand
experience of making the transition from student journalism to a career
in the media.
Volunteer
Support Fund
A new fund has been set up to help alumni who
would like to volunteer at the University. e
Volunteer Support Fund will cover the travel and
accommodation expenses for alumni who return
to one of the University’s campuses to help
students with their careers. Donations to the
Annual Fund are being used to support the fund.
e University is grateful to all those alumni who have supported us by volunteering their time and expertise. For the first time
we have listed below the names of those whom we are aware have volunteered between 1 August 2008 and 31 July 2009.
We have made every effort to record your name correctly. If there are any errors or if your name has been omitted, please do
tell us so that we can update our records. If you would prefer to be listed anonymously in future, please do let us know.
