God who is with us now was also in the beginning. One: And when all human striving has ceased, God will still be. Many: God comes to us as a nurturing presence, offering us hope, renewal, and acceptance; calling to us to act for justice, harmony, and peace. One: Let us then join our hearts together as one and worship God in thankfulness and adoration. * Gathering Hymn “My Country, Tis of Thee” S. F. Smith My country ‘tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From every mountainside, Let freedom ring. Our father’s God, to thee, Author of liberty, To thee we sing; Long may our land be bright, With freedom’s holy light; Protect us by thy might, Great God our King. * Prayer of Invocation Loving and everlasting God, we thank you for this occasion of worship which draws us together as a community of faith. We desire for our lives, for our country, and for all people what you desire for us: freedom, peace, joy, gentleness, self-control, justice – to love our neighbors as ourselves. We pray that your Spirit may work in us today; guiding us, teaching us, and challenging us. Bless us now through Christ, who taught us to pray together… * Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. * Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Hebrew Scripture Reading Gospel Reading Micah 6:6-8 Matthew 22:15-22 With what shall I come before the Lord, Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him and bow myself before God on high? in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves a year old? along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with tens of thousands of rivers of oil? God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?’ to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ But Jesus, He has told you, O mortal, what is good; aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting and what does the Lord require of you me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin but to do justice, and to love kindness, used for the tax.’ And they brought him a and to walk humbly with your God? denarius. Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. O Rest in the Lord O Rest in the Lord was written by Felix Mendelssohn (Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, 1809-1847), in 1846. The lyrics come from Psalm 37. O rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him, and He shall give thee thy heart's desires: O rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him, and He shall give thee thy heart's desires, and He shall give thee thy heart's desires. Commit thy way unto Him, and trust in Him; commit thy way unto Him, and trust in Him, and fret not they self because of evil doers. O rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him, wait patiently for Him; O rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him, and He shall give thee thy heart's desires, and He shall give thee thy heart's desires. O rest in the Lord, O rest in the Lord, and wait, wait patiently for Him. The First Congregational Church Welcome! July 17 Sing & Serve Last July, we had a large group of church members who worked side by side on the yards of two senior citizen homeowners. This July, we are going to do a similar work day, however, we are going to work on two homes owned by our own FCC senior members. There will be an early 9:00 a.m. service that day so we will be able to get going before it gets too warm. This time, we will not be having projects at the church or babysitting. We are not working with Senior Services for this project, so we are asking you to bring your children with you if they are 6 or older, and able to pick up sticks, etc. We will not have lawn equipment supplied, so please bring your favorite tools: rakes, clippers, weed diggers, etc. We will have water and snacks to take to the site with you. Please come and join in the fun. IT IS SUCH A REWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH THE WORKERS AND RECIPIENTS!
