Experience literary diversity in the age of globalisation: this is where it's possible. Arabic
poets meet American short story writers, South Korean poets encounter their Russian
colleagues, South African novelists rub shoulders with a new generation of Albanian writers.
Fascinating new discoveries stand up alongside recognised masters of world literature, the
new emerges, and interconnections become visible when, in 180 events over 11 days, 150
authors provide glimpses into new and traditional streams in world literature. Prose, poetry,
conversations with authors and political discussions, children's and youth literature, film
adaptations of literature – the ilb is a vital, polyglot forum, staged by and for literary
enthusiasts.
The international literature festival berlin takes place for the 11th time from 7th to 17th
September 2011. It is an event of the Peter Weiss Foundation for Art and Politics (registered
association) and the Berliner Festspiele. It is under the auspices of the German UNESCO
Commission and is made possible by funding from the Capital Cultural Fund.
The focus of the 11th international literature festival berlin is the Asia-Pacific region. Our goal
is to make the literature and culture of the region accessible for an interested audience, to
promote mutual understanding and to inspire contact and a lively exchange amongst the
authors, artists and mediators. Our efforts aim at establishing a platform in Berlin which will
allow our guests from the Asian-Pacific region the chance to authentically share their
literature and their intellectual, cultural and political attitudes. The festival organisers are
concerned with the question: which topics affect the countries of Asian-Pacific region?
Concerts, staged readings and film screenings enrich the programme.
At readings, foreign authors read from the original texts. Actors then present the German
translations. After the reading, moderators and interpreters help create discussions between
the authors and the audience.
The main venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. In addition, many events take place at
different venues throughtout Berlin, for example Festsaal Kreuzberg, Buchhändlerkeller,
Collegium Hungaricum, Instituto Cervantes and many more.

Literatures of the World
The selection for Literatures of the World is made by the festival’s organisers, supported by
an international network of curators and friends, and by the jurors, internationally renowned
experts in the literature of their regions. The current guest authors of the DAAD’s Berlin
Artists’ Programme will also receive invitations. This festival section allows audiences to get
to know not only world-renowned authors, but also fascinating new discoveries from the
fields of prose and poetry.

International Children’s and Youth Literature
In the International Children’s and Youth Literature section, authors and illustrators from all
over the world will be presenting their texts and illustrations in readings, workshops, school
projects and talks. The aim of this part of the festival is to showcase a representative crosssection of high quality children’s and youth literature in different languages – from picture
books to young children’s books, from graphic novels/comics to literature for young adults –
in events both inside and outside schools, and to leave a lasting impression and awareness
of the wider world in all its diversity, otherness and normality, while also providing the chance
see what was previously known from a fresh perspective.

In the section Reflections, authors, journalists and international experts from various
specialist areas will all be voicing their opinions in discussions and talks on current political,
social and cultural topics from Eastern Europe. Many of the festival’s authors will be provided
an additional podium here in order to answer any questions.

Speak, Memory
In the Speak, Memory section, German and international authors of the past decades and
centuries – including the famous, the obscure and the forgotten - will be remembered in a
combination of readings and talks. This year, some of the most important Eastern European
authors will be presented.

Specials
The Specials section of the programme includes the festival’s smaller, special events.
• Anniversary of 9/11
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the brutal reaction they provoked have shaped the early
21st century. What has happened since then has, however, not made our world any safer. All
attempts to protect “freedom” have only served to further confine us and forced us to become
more cautious. The ‘Literary concert’ on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the attacks
of September 11th 2001 presents writers from all around the world. The participants will take
turns on stage in groups of five to seven, and present various perspectives on the past
decade and the theme of the event. The event's host is the Berlin-based British author and
co-founder of »Authors for Peace«, Priya Basil.

For the fourth time, the ilb introduces the outstanding texts of talented young authors who
fully deserve an international breakthrough. The event takes place on Thursday, 08.09., at
7.30pm.

Scritture Giovani
Scritture Giovani is a project run in cooperation with two of Europe’s most important literary
festivals: the Festivaletteratura Mantova and The Telegraph Hay Festival. It works with
young European literary talents in order to bring them to a wider audience. For 2011, four
young authors have been selected who write a short story about the given topic “Names” in
various languages. The texts will be published in a trilingual anthology in English, Italian and
German, which will be presented on Friday, 16.09. at 7.30pm.

International SLAM!Revue
The International Slam!Revue at the international literature festival berlin will take place for
the tenth time in 2011. It presents five first class representatives of the genre from five
different countries. At the end of the Revue, the audience chooses the winner by applause.
The Festsaal Kreuzberg provides a fitting club ambience with a bar and DJ. The evening will
be presented by Bas Böttcher and Wolf Hogekamp on 8 September from 8pm.

Poetry Slam Show with two of the best international female slam poets: Courtney Meredith
(New Zealand) and Vera Polozkova (Russia). The event takes place on 14 September at
Berghain at 9pm, and again on 16 September at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele –
Seitenbühne at 9pm.

Second Poetry Slam for Pupils – The Final
In a series of poetry slam workshops, pupils from class 8 to 12 have written, edited,
perfected and performed their own texts under the guidance of experienced slammers from
the Berlin poetry slam scene. Now the winners of each school slam event come together for
the final. The audience chooses the top three candidates and selects the winner.

Graphic Novel
In the festival section »Specials« we will present a literary genre that doesn't often receive
much attention. Graphic novels have a greater affinity in their form and content to novels
than they do to traditional comics. Whereas comics are normally published as ‘strips’ in
newspapers or in comic book formats, graphic novels are usually bound like books. In
addition, they often strive for a greater literary weight in their choice of themes and the
complexity of their narratives. Under the banner ‘European Graphic Novels’ we will present
outstanding examples of this genre – with graphic novel artists from all over Europe.

Literature behind bars
Literature behind bars takes place for the tenth time at this year’s ilb. Participating authors
read from and discuss their work in prisons. In previous years, more than 20 international
authors have been involved, reading in six different prisons in Berlin. Within the European Art
in Prison movement, the project Literature behind bars is a model for similar programmes
across Europe.

Meeting of Young Authors:
The Meeting of Young Authors, through which the Berliner Festspiele have discovered fresh
new talents for over 25 years, is a forum for new writers to present their texts. The meeting is
designed to facilitate encounters between participants through readings, discussions, or in
workshops in which the young authors hone their craft. The writers are professionally
accompanied in an open and creative environment and are encouraged in their activities.
Sometimes, this can mark the beginning of a professional literary career. The event takes
place on Wednesday, 14.09, at 9pm.

New Playwrights from Europe – Structure Noise!
The theatre gathering presents a reading marathon with six outstanding young playwrights
from all over Europe. Renowned actors will read the texts from Great Britain, Spain, Czech
Republic, Romania, Estonia and Italy. The authors will be present, and can be questioned in
person in the following ‘Laptop-Wedding’.

Concerts
On 7 September at 8.30pm, following the opening speech, Ilija Trojanow’s new text “EisTau”
will be presented together with the specially-composed »Novel music« by Hans Huyssen,
performed by the Ensemble “Cosí Facciamo”. At the closing concert, 17 September at 8pm,
the internationally renowned and prize-winning jazz singer Aga Zaryan (Poland) will be
interpreting poems by the Polish Literature Nobel Prize Winner Czesław Miłosz.

Photo Competition
As this year’s festival focus is the literatures and cultures of the Asia-Pacific area, there will
also be a photo competition with the theme of “Literature in the Asia-Pacific area”, looking
for photos that give artistic expression to this focus.

Publications
The Catalogue 2011
Scritture Giovani
The annually-published festival catalogue contains photos,
biographies and selected bibliographies of all participating
writers. Since 2003 the authors have additionally been asked
to answer a selected question in a concise and spontaneous
way. This year, as in recent years, we have asked about the
"Berlin.Views" of our guests – what did they expect from
Berlin? What new experiences have they had? The huge
resonance as well as the creativity of the
responses surpassed our expectations: handwritten poems,
anecdotes, essays and stories, accompanied by drawings,
photos, collages and elaborate illustrations. The experiences
form part of tales of Berlin by known writers. Tino Hanekamp
wrote that “Everyone who wants to do something is here.
Everything that happens happens here.” For Antonio Muñoz
Molina, Berlin is “a forest that takes a long time to cross”, and
“the scene, at night, of the best stories of John le Carré”. The
Iranian author Kader Abdolah is reminded of “the
unpredictability of life” in Berlin.
Since 2002, there has been an annual anthonlogy with the
short stories of „Scritture Giovani“ participants. The theme
changes each year and the stories are then presented by the
young authors at each participating festival. This year’s topic
is “Names“. The publication records the short stories in all the
languages of the participating countries. The programme
“Scritture Giovani” and the accompanying book present the
authors with the opportunity to introduce themselves in
various different European countries.

In 1999 a group of culturally interested and committed people founded the society “Friends
and Sponsors of the international literature festival berlin.” Since then the members of the
society have actively supported the continuation and further consolidation of the festival. The
society and its members act as the voices which voluntarily promote the festival and present
it to the public. With their initiative and support, members help to make the festival a
memorable and wonderful experience for everyone interested in culture. Your membership
