Elbow played our first headline show there, and recorded our first EP at the venue. I met my most important friends at its bar and I’ve headbanged, slow-danced, laughed, cried and fallen over there for twenty years. It’s hosted the world’s greats and encouraged the region’s dreamers for 80 years or more and remains one of the cornerstones of our great city’s musical heritage.’ Guy Garvey The Picturehouse Bar at Band on the Wall is open to the public from 5pm–11pm, 7 nights a week* Expect good beer, a handpicked selection of music from around the world, acoustic sessions, music quizzes, regular open mic events and some of the finest home-cooked food the city has to offer. No gig ticket needed! Known for his controversial yet incredible lyricism on real life issues, Lowkey is an English rapper and political activist of Iraqi descent. We take him on the road to Glasgow, Leeds and Birmingham. Another one to definitely watch out for, we welcome visionary experimental rockers Magma for two nights of outlandish pysch-fusion. An addition to our late night programme is So Flute ft. Volcov, Danuka, Yadava & Baloo. Since landing on the Manchester club scene only a couple of years ago, So Flute has firmly cemented its reputation as one of the go-to nights for groove bending, impossible to define vibes. Toby Marks, the creative force behind Banco De Gaia, is one of the world’s leading exponents of globally inspired eclectic electronica. Mixing electronica with acoustic instruments and vocals, his work defies genre classification. Following his critically acclaimed headline tour of 2015, alongside the release of his debut book, the Brit-nominated George the Poet is back in October with his cleverest, most entertaining offering to date. Snarky Puppy’s Cory Henry is a multi-instrumentalist and producer. He captures the breadth of the jazz and gospel idioms and produces something altogether new. We welcome him back to Band on the Wall in November, plus shows in London, Brighton and Birmingham Tinariwen are poet-guitarists and soul rebels from the Southern Sahara desert. Their music expresses the aspirations of their people, the Kel Tamashek or ‘Tuareg’ of the southern Sahara desert. The guitar is their weapon. Simplicity is Freedom. Expect a huge show come November when we bring them to Band on the Wall. We take multi-award winning songwriter Eliza Carthy on tour to Manchester, Scunthorpe and Nottingham in November with her new group, the Wayward Band. Terrace Martin is a musician, rapper and producer who has lent his skills to the likes of Quincy Jones, Snoop Dogg, 9th Wonder, Talib Kweli and many, many others. Catch him at Band on the Wall, also in November. Hailing from San Francisco, Charlie Hunter is one of the most exciting jazz guitarists working today, and one whose style is genuinely unique. The Comet is Coming are a jazz, electronic, funk and psych rock band, signed to the seminal multi-disciplinary imprint The Leaf Label. Their debut LP, Channel The Spirits has been nominated for a 2016 Mercury Prize. They perform here in December. Our season wraps up with a massive New Year’s Eve Funk & Soul Party, with a live set from the Haggis Horns plus residents and special guest DJs spinning tunes late into the morning. We can’t wait to welcome you to all this plus our regular club nights and residencies, including parties with Mr. Scuff, the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club, Friday Night Reggae and more.
