AV 5763 / JULY 2003 s”xc MAZEL TOV TO THE GRADUATES OF 5763/2003 his June, thirty four students graduated from the Academy’s Beatrice Stone Yavne High School and Yeshiva High School divisions. All graduates will continue their education, with the overwhelming majority, thirty students, opting to attend yeshivos and seminaries in Eretz Yisroel. Yavne Graduation A capacity crowd participated in the moving ceremony, ably chaired by Dr. Elliott Dickman, member of the Academy Executive Board and parent of one of the graduates. As noted by Mr. Ivan A. Soclof, President, this outstanding class was the first to celebrate its commencement in the new Beatrice Stone Yavne High School building. Rabbi N.W. Dessler, Dean, praised the girls for their middos tovos and readiness to help others in a discreet and joyful manner. Rabbi Dessler then presented the prestigious Beatrice Stone Midos Award, which includes a full-year scholarship to a teacher’s seminary in Israel, to Elisheva Howitt. Rabbi Chaim Stein, Rosh Yeshiva of Telshe, chairman of the Vaad Hachinuch, praised the girls’ commitment to spend an additional year of study in order to be able to build true Jewish homes in the future. Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Educational Director, commended the girls on their accomplishments and expressed that “the graduates are recipients of a gift to be cherished, the gift of an education for life.” Rabbi Avrohom Schwartz presented the Hendel Berliner Awards, to Djilda Henkin, Nechama Heimowitz, and Naomi Laufer. This award perpetuates the memory of Mrs. Hendel Berliner who survived the flames of the Holocaust and proceeded to build a Jewish dynasty in America. Judaic and General Studies Valedictorian, Djilda Henkin, expressed hakaras hatov to her teachers, explaining that just like a tree needs nutrients to grow, so a student only thrives because of the vital foundation nurtured by mechanchim, moros, and teachers. Judaic salutatorian, Naomi Laufer, promised that graduates will try to use the talents nurtured in the Academy to reach their potential; and General Studies Salutatorian, Nechama Heimowitz, reiterated the general consensus that all the girls felt proud to have had the privilege of learning at the Academy and eagerly await the opportunity to be mekadesh shem Shomayim b’olam. A gift from the graduating class was presented to Rebbetzin Rochel Sorotzkin, treasured Supervisor of Yavne High School for many years. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of diplomas by Mrs. Neche Moerman, Principal of Yavne, Mrs. Lois Mager, Assistant Principal, and on behalf of the Board of Directors, Mr. Alan Schabes and Mr. Mel Waxman. Yeshiva High School Graduation The new Beis Medrash at the Jacob Sapirstein campus was the site of the commencement exercises of the Yeshiva High School. Chaired by Mr. Ronald Greenfeld, the event was indicative of the enthusiasm, dedication, and impressive achievements of the graduates themselves. Rabbi Yitzchok Sorotzkin, Rosh Yeshiva of Telshe, speaking on behalf of the Vaad Hachinuch, commended the students for their sincere commitment to Torah education. Rabbi Sorotzkin expressed that the high standards and levels attained by the student body was most evident during oral bechinos which he administered just days prior to the graduation. In his message, Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Educational Director, lauded the graduates as, “an extraordinary group of young men who recognized and utilized a unique opportunity at the Yeshiva High School to benefit from life-altering and lifelong relationships with an outstanding faculty.” Valedictory addresses were delivered by Noah Kraut (Limudei Kodesh) and Yaakov Zev Greenfeld (General Studies). Rabbi Leib Scheinbaum, Supervisor, presented the coveted Amud HaYeshiva Award to Doron Bennett who expressed his appreciation in a beautiful speech lauding the devotion of the Rabbeim to the growth and development of each individual talmid. Doron posed the question of how a talmid could possibly repay a Rebbe who has invested so much diligence, patience, expertise, and influence. Doron cited the beautiful Gemara that brings the story of a starving, tired, thirsty man in a desert who suddenly discovers a fruit tree that revives and revigorates him. This man ultimately bestows the blessing on the tree that all its branches should be like him. Doron concluded from this that the “best show of hakaras hatov that we can give our Rabbeim is by following their examples of mesiras nefesh, mussar, hashkafah, and hasmadah that they have impressed upon us.” On behalf of the seniors, Doron presented the school with a magnificent Ner Tamid which graces the Aron Kodesh in the new Beis Midrash. Rabbi N.W. Dessler presented the Judaic diplomas and Rabbi Yitzchok Kasnett, Principal of General Studies, presented diplomas and various national awards for excellence. May all the graduates go M’chayil el chayil, from strength to strength, and continue transmitting our heritage from generation to generation. 2 V’DIBARTA BAM This year, the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland was the proud host of the Midwest V’Dibarta Bam Mishnayos Program. This international program perpetuates the memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and involves rigorous exams on Mishnayos which are taught during voluntary after school enrichment classes offered throughout the year by Rabbi Hillel Drazin. HAC winners were Aryeh Greenfeld, Betzalel Freedman, Yehuda Leib Goldfarb, Eli Chaikin, and Moshe Rom. This year’s program was sponsored by Mr. Mendy Klein in memory of his father, Mr. Naftoli Herzka Klein, z’l. ACADEMY HOSTS NATIONAL BAIS YAAKOV CONVENTION The weather was snowy, bitterly cold, but spirits in the Beatrice Stone Yavne High School were soaring. Over 600 delegates, from schools as distant as California, Texas, and Georgia, converged on Beachwood, Ohio to spend a Shabbos learning, sharing, singing, and performing in classrooms extensively decorated to reflect the theme of the Bais Yaakov Convention - Hakol Kol Yaakov, the fervency of our tefillos will prevail over the sword of Esav. The delegates were amazed at the hospitality extended to them and the weekend’s meticulous detailed organization that left them elated and inspired. We are proud that our girls so utilized and projected the ahavas yisroel and ahavas Torah that their teachers strive so hard to imbue in each student. FROM BRURIAH HIGH SCHOOL, ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY: I must commend you on a fantastic convention. The girls came back so excited. They felt it was an inspiration as well as fun fun fun and they felt properly welcomed. CONVENTION NOTES: FROM BNOS BAIS YAAKOV HIGH SCHOOL, TORONTO, ONTARIO: We can only attempt to express our appreciation to you and to all the staff and students of Yavne, for the beautiful convention. The speeches were inspiring, the presentations were entertaining and thought provoking, and the achdus, unity, was truly soul stirring! The entire Shabbos was unforgettable; the many aspects of hakol kol Yaakov will remain in our minds. FROM BAIS YAAKOV SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND: Our convention delegates returned from Cleveland exhausted from the most wonderful, exhilarating and inspirational weekend at Yavne. The speakers, the workshops, the weekend program and general camaraderie that convention weekends foster – all contributed to a magnificent convention experience for our talmidos. We in Bais Yaakov thank you for all the time and effort and personalized energy that go into the planning and ultimate execution of this mammoth undertaking. FROM BAIS YAAKOV HIGH SCHOOL, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI: We thank you all for the wealth of material we learned and shared, and also for the tireless efforts that kept us well fed and taken care of. Most of all, we enjoyed the atmosphere you provided in this true kenessiah l’shem Shomayim, gathering for the sake of Heaven. FROM HANNA SACKS BAIS YAAKOV HIGH SCHOOL, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: We were very impressed with your beautiful facility, and even more importantly, with the gracious and caring hospitality displayed by all your students and staff. The concern and effort expended to insure that every individual need was taken care of was evident. FROM BAIS YAAKOV BNOS CHAYIL, LAKEWOOD, NEW JERSEY: Just watching the way your Yavne girls interact with each other and their behavior in general warmly inspired us and was a kiddush Hashem. FROM MANHATTAN HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, NEW YORK: I feel compelled to take time to thank you for a most impressive and enjoyable Bais Yaakov Convention. The planning of the event, the sensitivity to detail and the personal pride you take in the Bais Yaakov movement guaranteed the success of the convention. FROM BAIS YAAKOV OF PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY: Our students returned from the Convention enthusiastic, inspired and bubbling over with quotes from speeches and workshops. It was obviously a most productive kinus l’shem Shomayim. 3 WE ARE ONE - TEACHING ACHDUS AND EMPATHY Today, more than ever, the speed of worldwide telecommunications has made it possible for us to know almost immediately the plight of fellow Jews around the world. At the Academy we have initiated many programs that teach children how to feel connected, empathize, and help our fellow Jews. Three alumni involved in the distribution section of our project have shared their enthusiasm.Writes Debby Oster Stein, now the Director of Psychological Services at Ginot Shomron: “The gifts with the notes from the Yavne girls were distributed on Purim morning and brought smiles to the faces of the children…. I decided to buy Pesach gifts at the non-profit gift shop run by volunteers. The shop profits go to fund special projects for children who are sick in the hospital. I arranged for these Pesach gifts to go to families who do not necessarily get help from social workers because the idea of saying “I need help” is very difficult for them. I want to thank you, as well, as a representative of the professionals of the yishuv who work hard day in and day out to help the children who suffer both from poverty as well as from the terrorism that has hit us hard in our yishuv.” This year, students from kindergarten through high school have been involved in a myriad of projects promoting connectedness. Kindergartners, third, and sixth graders created a mobile and toys for the Bikur Cholim House in our neighborhood. First graders pieced together a quilt for the lobby of the Bikur Cholim House and fifth graders drew large murals of Eretz Yisroel and the Yomim Tovim for other rooms in the house. Students in kindergarten through third grade created cards for children in Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital while sixth graders developed games for those hospitalized. At a truly inspirational assembly, Mrs. Z. Weiss from Jerusalem who stayed at the Bikur Cholim House during treatment at the Clinic, gave personal testimony of the tremendous chesed extended to her by the Cleveland community. Gitel Meisels Fischer of Yerushalayim writes: “I cannot tell you how many children you made happy. The toys and games were carefully chosen to suit the families which were picked. They were so delighted. Many of the families chose building toys such as blocks and lego….your share in bringing simchas Yom Tov to these families and their children was so well received.” The boys’ Yeshiva Ketana often visited Menorah Park Senior Citizen Home to sing and perform, and brought Yom Tov cheer to the residents. Third graders also presented a musical performance to Holocaust survivors under the auspices of the Jewish Family Service. Our students raised funds for a computer center in the Merav Children’s Home in Israel, and for Kids for Kids, a support group for families who are victims of terror in Israel. Batya Einstadter spoke to the girls directly during a recent visit to Cleveland and reiterated the importance of the girls’ efforts. “One cannot possibly fathom the struggles these children encounter daily,” she said. “At best, others assist them with basic food and clothing. Toys, especially new ones, are usually non-existent. The joy these children feel and display as they receive these ‘basic’ toys is heartwarming.” High School students participate in the Irving I. Stone Tzedakah Fund whose M’Yad L’Yad program successfully sensitizes students to the challenges of their counterparts in Israel. Yavne High School girls raised funds for the Bais Yaakov of Baku in the former Soviet Union and sent moneys to alumni to purchase yom tov toys and shlach manos for needy chidren in Israel. Students held a fun-filled Monopoly Chinese Auction and Mrs. Miriam Dessler’s lashon class conducted a lively Purim Shelach Manos Auction plus the girls again conducted their successful Annual Shavuos Flower Sale to raise funds for Eretz Yisroel. Perhaps the most touching letter of all came from a recipient of some toys who wrote the girls: “I live in a two-bedroom apartment and gave birth to my sixth child, be’h, a week before Pesach. The toys occupied the children during the Yom Tov and really benefited us all to maintain the calm and serenity in our home at this hectic time.” Each division hopes to continue and strengthen its commitment to teach and demonstrate to our students the all encompassing concept that kol yisroel areivim zeh l’zeh, we are all connected one to another. 4 Third graders used several computer programs to create graphic organizers and research projects. On Technology Night, fourth graders proudly demonstrated their knowledge of computer technology and displayed their finished products; reports that were full of content, organized logically, grammatically correct, and very professional. Yeshiva High School students traveled to Detroit to visit and be inspired by Rabbi Chaim P. Sheinberg of Eretz Yisroel. On the New York Torah tour, seventh grader Betzalel Freedman met Rabbi Shmuel Berenbaum, Rosh Yeshiva of Mirrer Yeshiva Central Institute. Cocoons to butterflies – right in the classroom! One of the miracles of nature unraveled in its glory to our first and second graders who watched caterpillars hatch into beautiful butterflies that they then freed into the greenery surrounding our playground. Academy parents generously lend their time to share their expertise with students. Dr. Daniel Karns, an orthopedic surgeon at Parma Community Hospital, recently visited a kindergarten class to explain x-rays, splints, and hygiene. Sixth grade students culminated a unit on scientific inquiry with an outstanding Science Fair evening that showcased their ability to create hypothesis-based projects that scientifically demonstrated many wonderful aspects of our amazing world. The Hebrew Academy Boys Choir PTA CHINESE AUCTION The theme of this year’s PTA Chinese Auction was the blessing of everyday continuity, the harmony that enables parents, teachers and staff to continuously dedicate themselves to the wellbeing of our students. Special thanks to Mrs. Suri Goldman, Auction Chairperson, and her cotillion of dedicated volunteers for coordinating an event that celebrated the concept of friendship and camaraderie. 6 FROM OUR MAILBOX ALUMNI NACHAS ENGAGEMENTS/MARRIAGES Dear Rabbi Dessler, As a HAC graduate, it makes me proud to know that the ideals of Torah and chesed that I received from the school continue to be passed on to future generations of Academy students. Thank you to the students of the Hebrew Academy for their generous donation of $1,300 for our computer center in Bet Hayeled. Bet Hayeled provides a secure and nurturing environment for orphaned children and children from distressed home environments. We were touched by this true act of chesed. Dear Rabbi Scheinbaum, I am sure that, after many years of successful publication of the “Peninim on the Torah” series, you do not need any further praise of your work, least of all from a baal habayit from Johannesburg, South Africa. However, since I get so much benefit from your weekly Parsha page I feel that it is necessary for me to express my hakarat hatov. I should tell you that it is not only I who has benefited from Peninim – I give a Chumash shiur at my shul every Shabbos morning, and many times I quote from your insights (with due acknowledgement to you as a source), so the people who attend my shiur also get the benefit of your Torah. What I find particularly nice about your style is that you combine both the intellectual and emotional aspects of a subject. You seem to have found the perfect balance between insight and inspiration. May Hashem bless you to continue illuminating us with your Torah for many years to come, and thank you again for all the Torah I have learnt from you in the past.
