“Faith”
And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, said, “Lord, have mercy on my
son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I
brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” And Jesus rebuked
the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and
said, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you
have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move,
and nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:14-20 ESV
In this Gospel text Jesus heals a demon possessed boy. But the miracle of the healing is not the main point
of the text. The main point is the unbelief of the disciples which prevented them from healing the boy. This story
follows the story of Jesus’ transfiguration. The amazing thing is that Peter, James and John saw Jesus’ transfiguration. They saw Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah. They heard the Father’s voice saying, “This is my beloved
Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” And still they could not muster up the faith of a mustard seed
between the three of them? Even more than that; there were nine disciples that failed to drive out the evil spirit that
day. Jesus said the faith of a grain of mustard seed could move mountains. Yet nine disciples did not have enough
faith even heal the boy. No wonder Jesus expresses such pain and deep disappointment! From His own disciples,
Jesus had the right to expect something better. So the question is; how could these disciples who spent so much
time with Jesus; seeing him do wonders and miracles; seeing Him cast out demons; seeing Him heal multitudes of
people; seeing Him walk on water; how could they still lack faith, even the faith of a grain of a mustard seed? It
seems almost impossible and yet it happens all around us every day. One possible explanation is that they forgot
that it was God who was doing the work, not themselves. It is possible that they felt pride and arrogance being selected and empowered by Jesus to do His work, instead of giving the glory to God. This is misplaced faith because
it is based in ourselves instead of our source, God, who empowers us, lifts us and sustains us. Faith in self is not
faith in God. Therefore when the disciples confronted the demon-possessed boy; the demon did not see the Son of
God in them; it did not fear them and would not obey their words.
There is another possible explanation: When Jesus sent the disciples out among the Jews, seeking the lost
sheep of Israel in chapter ten, maybe these disciples did not truly believe that they could do what Jesus sent them to
do. This explanation is more likely because it falls in line with our human limitations. Jesus told them to go heal
the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers and cast out demons. Who among us can do that? How many of us would
believe it even if Jesus said we could? The disciples were human too and they may have questioned themselves
and doubted that Jesus could do all of these miracles through them. It’s nothing more than what Jesus says to us,
His latter day disciples, when we demonstrate our lack of faith by taking matters into our own hands, rather than
relying God’s promise to take care of us. Lack of faith amounts to fear. And fear erodes faith if we let it; because if
we truly believe every word and promise of God simply because He said it, than that mustard seed of faith blossoms into an immovable force, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our faith then becomes something that will sustain
us until the end, if we continue to nourish it with Word and Sacrament. Faith is more than just something that
would be nice to have; it is a necessity in this life. We cannot and will not live without it in this world or the next.
We need faith as much as we need air, food and water. Just as air, food and water sustain the body, faith sustains
the spirit. If we spent even half as much time nourishing our spirits with faith as we do our bodies with food, all of
us would be able to move mountains. God bless you all!

The Student Center at Texas Tech University
The Texas Tech Lutheran Student Center, right across the street from the Texas Tech campus, would
like to invite all incoming freshmen (and any other students) to come to our SOS (Supper On Sunday).
Area churches provide home cooked meals on Sunday evening at 6:00. (Dorms do not provide meals on
Sunday evenings). At 5:00, a local pastor will be leading a Bible Study.
The Lutheran Student Center is a place where students can come and have a quiet, relaxing place to just
hang out, study, or play games. There is always a stocked refrigerator (water and sodas). There is also a
kitchen if students would want to come and cook. Our address is 2615 19th Street, Lubbock, TX 79410.

The student center is equipped with WIFI throughout the building. There is a ping-pong table, foosball,
pool table, big screen TV with cable and board games.

The first SOS for this semester is August 23rd, so by the time you read this, we will be in full swing
Help is needed to prepare meals for several dates. If you, or your group

Sept. 20th and 27th, Oct. 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th, Nov. 1st, 8th, 15th,
and 22nd, and Dec. 6th.

Thursday, 1 pm to 4 pm.
This Is Love
Reading through 1 John, we find the meaning behind the “this” as written above. “This is love: not that
we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10,
NIV). It’s the Gospel. God sending His Son to redeem us, to free us, to claim us as His own. Love that
never changes, that doesn’t give up, and that is perfect.
From mid July into the beginning of August, LCMS congregations and teams have been serving in various cities throughout Poland to share this love. Teams arrived to work with local Polish Lutheran congregations in leading English Bible Camps (EBCs). While each sight and schedule looked slightly different, each one focused on the same message, “for it is by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:8,
NIV).
God provided three teams to come and lead EBCs at four congregations. In helping to coordinate
teams, I met and worked with each team as they arrived. I was also privileged to serve with one team
for a week in Cieszyn. Thank you to the teams from Escondido, LWML Texas, and the Nebraska area for
sharing the Gospel with the children of Poland.

ADVISORY BOARD NOTES
August 10, 2015
(THE NEW LSSS)
Opening prayer led by Pastor Mike Holmes. Ten members present.
FIT (FOSTER CARE/ADOPTION – Budget is 55 and we have 55 kids and 17 families. We have 4 families in
the process of being approved. Unfortunately, we had a special needs child to die last week and so now are undergoing investigation as it normal. We will have some new staff beginning next week. We will be taking the foster
kids to Target for backpacks and school supplies and to Joyland for a fun party.
(HFF) HEALTH FOR FRIENDS - We saw 112 clients in the clinic during July and diagnosed a lot of new diabetics. The Food Bank is having a conference and we will be making a presentation there. We have been approved for multi-year funding by United Way; this means that we will not have to go through the application process for several years. We received a visit from Dr. Ted Mitchell, president of HSC and he was impressed with the
work we do. Tami will be making a presentation to Senior Companions in September. United Way kicks of August 23, 2015. Working with the Food Bank to get a more health/diabetic friendly box of food. Five glucometers
were distributed in July.
(NH) NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE – July was a busy month. Since May and June temperatures were mild we
have not paid out as much as last year. Food voucher request were down as there are a lot more places offering
free meals at present. We distributed 157 last month. We ran out of CEAP funds in June. We received some more
funds in July but they were designated for May-July and by mid-July, those funds were depleted. We served 807
households during July. The value of services distributed this year is just over $665,000. We were approved by
the Lubbock Area Foundation for funds for the food voucher program so that should help us till the end of the year.
We are working on some fresh ideas for the Thanksgiving baskets. We have normally done 100 baskets at a cost
of $5,000. Due to changes in the Thrivent funds, we will not be receiving as much from them and donations last
year were down. We may have to cut back on numbers and/or quantity of food in the basket or possibly changing
the whole program.
NEEDS – Toothpaste, especially small tubes, toothbrushes, deodorant. Our next meeting is at 12 noon on
Monday, September 14, 2015 at Neighborhood House, 1212 13 th, Suite 102, Lubbock.

Bethlehem Christian Families
On Sunday, August 30th, we had the opportunity to view products and
creations in wood made by the hands of Christian artisans from the Holy
Land region. The Rishmawi Family has been designated as the representative for these wonderful Christian artisans and has been authorized
to show their olive wood carvings. The tradition of Olive wood carvings
in the Holy Land has been handed down from father to son since the
12th century. Due to the difficulties the last few years in the middle
east, tourism has been dramatically reduced and these folks have suffered greatly. This is causing the Christian community to immigrate to
different countries leaving the Christian population at 2% today from
25% ten years ago. We hope you enjoyed their display tables and purchased some of the finest handcrafts available from the Holy Land

The LWML Mission project for September is in support of Redeemer’s neighborhood Fire Station. We will be collecting snacks and other “goodies” to present to the firemen who serve our
area and protect our property. Items needed are:
Candies, Cheetos, Chips, Cookies, Cheese and Peanut Butter Crackers, Gold Fish Crackers,
Popcorn, Drinks and any good items that the firemen would appreciate.
Please see Jonelle Oswalt for further information concerning this worthwhile project.
As a fund raiser, the LWML is looking for volunteers to participate in a meat tasting
event at Texas Tech. Each volunteer will be paid for their participation and then
donate the proceeds to the LWML. If you have never taken part in one of these
meat tastings, it is most interesting. We need 22 volunteers for September 15th
and another 22 for October 20th. Both tastings beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Remember to bring your postage stamps to LWML. Just cut them off the envelopes, with a generous space around them, bring them to church with you, and
place them in the mail box in the LWML Area. These stamps are sent to Austin
and are sold to a collector. Funds from this sale are used to ship items to Lutheran World Relief. If you don’t have time to trim the stamps, just bring the envelopes in and we will trim them as required by the collector.
LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF BABY CARE KITS
Redeemer LWML voted to collect items for Lutheran World Relief throughout the entire year instead of just one
month. We collect items for the “Baby Care Kits” which are sent in April each year. The items listed are for
each "Baby Care Kit" for Lutheran World Relief, sizes can be 0 to 24 months, and gently used items can be used:
2 lightweight cotton t-shirts
2 blankets, up to 52" square
1 jacket, sweatshirt OR sweater with hood or cap
1 hand towel, dark color
2 diaper pins or large safety pins
2 gowns or sleepers WITHOUT feet
4 cloth diapers, flat-fold preferred
2 pair baby socks
2 bath-size bars soap (4-5 oz. ea.), in original packaging
If you can help with any of these items, we have a cradle and display in the Parish Hall. Please put your items
there. Thank you all for your support of the LWML Mission projects.
MITES! If you would like to be involved in the good wor ks that our Mites do, you can
pick up a box from the LWML table in the Parish Hall. The Mission Grants approved for the
biennium 2012-2014 is $175,000, as approved at the Texas District LWML Convention. It is
amazing what these small amounts will do. At the end of the day, you can put your loose
change in the box then bring your full box to church and give it to Jana Taff or Jonelle Oswalt.

There are many different ways for volunteers to be involved in the District Convention. We need ushers, hostesses, greeters, choirs, musicians and a host of others areas where you can assist in the operation
of this convention. Cindy Steinbeck, author of The V ine Speaks, will be the Keynote speaker. Pastor
Ken Klaus will be the Proclaimer for the Friday evening service which is open to the community. Minerva and the Pearls are scheduled to appear at the Saturday Evening banquet along with the Country Club band. Registration will be published at a later date. If you can share your time and talents,

Women’s Bible Study
The Women’s Bible Study Group will meet on September 12th at 9:30 at the church.

Elder’s Meeting
There will be an Elder’s meeting following Sunday School and Adult Bible Study
on September 6th. All Elders are asked to attend and report on their people.
Redeemer has the ability to collect your tithes by electronic transfer. If you would like to sign
up for this convenient way to make your tithe, please talk to Patty Perkins about it.
Redeemer is collecting coupons for Neighborhood House to distribute to their clients. There
is a basket for these and one of our LWML members will take them to NH. It is helpful if the
coupons are neatly trimmed. Thank you for your support of this project!
Remember to tune in to KYFO 790 AM at 8:00 a.m. each Sunday morning to hear The
Lutheran Hour broadcast. This is especially good if you can’t get to church on a regular
basis. If you are outside the Lubbock broadcast area, The Lutheran Hour is also broadcast on KPET 690 AM in Lamesa at 11:30 a.m. There are CD’s of the broadcasts available in the office if you have someone that can get them for you. Please use these resources
to enhance your worship experience.

The Elder’s meeting is regularly scheduled for the first Sunday of each month.
MEN’S PRAYER BREAKFAST:
The Men’s Prayer Breakfast will meet on Saturday, September 5th. We will discuss our new
association with the Lutheran Laymens League and Lutheran Hour Ministries. Since we solved
all of the important world matters last month, we’ll just relax and have a good time this month.
SENIORS ON THE GO:
Meets monthly on the first Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Activities Room. Check your Redeemer Reporter for more information on these meetings.
HEARTS OF HOPE CARE GROUP:
Meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. Look for information on these meetings in the Redeemer Reporter.
APPLE CORE CARE GROUP:
Meets almost every month at 7:00 p.m. except during the summer. The date of the meeting
will be announced in the Redeemer Reporter on the week before. Please contact Patty Perkins
if you would like more information about this group.

Guidepost magazine has a project called “Knit for Kids”. You can get knit and crochet patterns for sweaters that
they distribute to children in foreign countries. You can send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Knit for Kids,
39 Seminary Hill Road, Carmel NY 10512 or go to www.knitforkids.org. Another good opportunity for getting
the Gospel out.
Project Linus (Lubbock County Chapter) is a 100% volunteer, non-profit organization. They are looking for
“blanketeers” to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need by making and donating new, handmade, washable blankets, quilts or afghans to the
