Ave Maria Home
Covenant To Care
Serving Seniors. Enriching Lives.
The Joy of Giving
Dear Friends and Family Members,
Thank you again for all of your support of Ave
Maria. Recently, Ave Maria Home was recognized by the
Memphis Business Journal as one of the top long term
care communities in Memphis and Shelby County. Thank
you for entrusting us with your loved ones and for your
financial support. We could not continue to be one of the
best providers of long term care services in the Greater Memphis Area without
your help.
Our Tree of Life Family Campaign to build six more Green House® homes
is just one example of our donors assisting us in our mission of caring for our
elders. Our tagline of Serving Seniors. Enriching Lives. succinctly describes
our mission of care and compassion which cannot be accomplished without
you.
To date, we have raised $6.5 Million toward our $10 Million goal to build
these homes. We’re getting closer to making these homes a reality for our
elders, but we need your help to meet a challenge from a local foundation. As
you may know, Ave Maria must raise $500,000 each year for the next three
years in order to receive $300,000/year from the foundation during those same
years. Our current fiscal year ends June 30, and we still need about $25,000
to meet this year’s goal and challenge. On July 1, the foundation’s challenge
begins again for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
Next year, Ave Maria Home will be celebrating 60 years of service to
Memphis and Shelby County. Founded in 1956 by the Ave Maria Guild, now
the Wings of Ave Maria, Ave Maria has been blessed to serve your grandparents,
parents, aunts, and uncles. We are a family and we want to be here in the future
to care for you and your loved ones if you need our services. Please help make
these Green House® homes a reality. Become a branch of our Tree!
Ave Maria’s Governing Board, staff, and the Wings of Ave Maria are
planning many special activities to commemorate our 60th anniversary of
service and care to our elders. Once we have finalized our plans, we will let
you know the dates so that you can join us and share in the celebration. You
can also learn about our 60th Anniversary and other Ave Maria events on our
website: www.avemariahome.org or follow us on Facebook.
Thank you again for your support and friendship. We could not provide the
programs and services we do every day without you.

Each year, one week is designated as National Volunteer
Week to recognize the countless volunteers who help nonprofit organizations year round, and to make the public
aware of the many volunteers opportunities available in
their communities. Former President Richard Nixon is
credited with establishing National Volunteer Week in
the United States via a Presidential Proclamation in 1974.
Almost twenty years later, President George Bush saluted
volunteers in his 1991 State of the Union Address.
During this year’s National Volunteer Week, Ave Maria
volunteers were treated to a special luncheon on May 7th
at Coletta’s Restaurant in Bartlett. Those in attendance
enjoyed hearing from keynote speaker, Sarah Petschonek,
CEO and Founder of Volunteer Odyssey. Petschonek
explained that Volunteer Odyssey is a nonprofit organization
that places young professionals in a variety of volunteer
opportunities over a one week period, i.e.--volunteering at
a different organization each day. During their one week
volunteering blitz, volunteers often discover a “favorite”
charity and will continue volunteering with that agency.
The Volunteer Odyssey program strives to “match a need
with a need” by helping many volunteers find their ideal
job at one of their volunteer sites.
At the conclusion of the luncheon, clay pots that were
hand decorated by residents and filled with spring flowers,
were given as door prizes to several lucky volunteers.

May Crowning 2015
On a beautiful May day, over 100 friends, family members, staff, and residents of Ave Maria Home gathered to
celebrate the annual crowning of Mary in the Father J. Leonard Oglesby Chapel. This traditional ceremony honored
Mary, the mother of Jesus, and for whom Ave Maria Home is named. Following a welcome by Frank Gattuso, Ave Maria resident Father James Pugh provided an opening prayer, and
readings were given by Terry Zazzara, Ave Maria’s Staff Development Nurse and Educator, and by Bob Trainor, an Ave
Maria family member. Tara Bigley, Director of Ave Maria’s Adult Day Center, assisted residents and clients — Rosalie
Andreuccetti, Joan Denham, Janice Doane, Diana Williams, Marie Patriss, and Alice Scott who presented roses to the
statue of Mary. Assisted Living resident Mary Ann Dote crowned the statue of Mary. Beautiful music for the ceremony was provided by Dr. Kelly Kramer and the Schola Cantorum Singers. Following the
ceremony, all enjoyed a festive picnic lunch in the Assisted Living atrium.

Monogram Foods Communications Coordinator Blair Jackson presented the
check to Michelle Birmingham, Ave Maria’s Assisted Living activity director
and Marlene Siegel, Ave Maria administrator, during a Nursing Home week
picnic which featured delicious hot dogs and hamburgers donated by
Monogram Foods. Birmingham submitted Ave Maria’s winning nomination
last fall: “Our residents make sandwiches and candy cups for the homeless
like Memphis Union Mission on a regular basis and make knitted hats and
scarves for the homeless veterans and other groups as needed.” Ave Maria
was the second of ten charitable organizations chosen to receive $1,500 /
year for ten years through Monogram’s Impact10 program, an acts of
kindness campaign celebrating the Memphis company’s tenth anniversary. Monogram Chairman Karl Schledwitz drew Ave Maria’s entry from a metal
bucket filled with over 1,000 nominations recommending outstanding
nonprofit agencies in the Greater Memphis area.

Music enhances our quality of life!
By Marlene Siegel, Administrator
“Tennessee, Tennessee-there ain’t no place I’d rather
be.” are famous Jerome J.
Garcia lyrics that we have
heard for over 30 years and
mean something different
to each of us. Twenty years
from now, I hope care givers
will play my favorite music, if
I am living in a long term care
community. Great music from
artists like Paul Simon, Mick
Jagger, and Pete Townsend
will be the music I will want to
hear.
Think about it, where
would you be without being
able to listen to your favorite
music in your car or going to
a concert to hear your favorite
musicians performing all
your favorite songs? Are you
or someone you know ready
to become an ambassador
of music at Ave Maria? If so,
please keep reading because
we need your help. Think
about what music has meant
to you over the years. Do you
have a favorite song now or
a favorite song from high
school? When I was in high
school, I sang along to “Pinball
Wizard,” day and night. I still
love that album and The Who,
a band of talented musicians
currently on tour and
celebrating
their
50th
anniversary as a band.
What we can’t put into
words, can sometimes be
put into music and song. Can
you believe Roger Daltrey is
71; Pete Townsend is 69; Paul
Simon and Mick Jagger are
71; and Ringo Starr is 74? We
all love music, some music
more than others, but truth
be told, music wakes up our
senses. Memphis is all about
music and famous musicians:
Al Green, Rufus Thomas, Isaac
Hayes, Justin Timberlake,
Sam Phillips, Elvis Presley,
Johnny Cash, to name a few.
Music is the background
in my life. I remember the
music that was played in the
car on cassettes we listened
to on our family vacation, the
soundtracks from my favorite
movies, and the old songs we
still hear on America’s Got
Talent. Do you remember
your first concert? I went
to see Chicago in 1971. Do
you remember the music
you danced to alone in your
bedroom, practicing for the
prom?
Everybody loves music.
Here at Ave Maria, we
are finding music to be
an activity that people,
even those late in life
still enjoy, sometimes
when all else seems
uninteresting.
During
music therapy, we see
quiet elders still able to
sing along and tap their
feet to the music. We see
a great response at Ave
Maria sponsored musical
events throughout the
campus. Think about how
music impacts your day.
Do you listen to the radio
in your car or at your desk? Do
you catch a concert when you
can stay up late enough to
attend one? Did your parents
listen to Lawrence Welk or
Guy Lombardo? I still have
my father’s Guy Lombardo
CDs. I just can’t throw them
away. One thing for certain,
music is a universal language
regardless of age, gender, or
cognitive status.
In this day and age of
“meaningful engagement”,
Ave Maria is now participating
in a music and memory
program that was started
earlier this year when St. Luke
Cottage activities director,
Amber Brown, came to me
and asked, “Can I buy one
iPod for the residents to use
in St. Luke Cottage?” With
that one purchase, we are
using an innovative program
designed to enhance the
quality of life for people living
with dementia through the
use of CD players, IPods,
music therapy, live, and
personalized music. We all
know that music has the
power to evoke memories,
inspire
movement,
and
connect us with others. Just
close your eyes and think
about musical tunes that
bring back memories for
you, like James Taylor singing
“Fire and Rain”, “Stairway
to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin,
“Tennessee Jed” by the
Grateful Dead, and “Walking
in Memphis” by Marc Cohn.
Everyone loves good music. It
can renew our love, enhance
our senses, and lights up our
eyes.
As part of our on-going
efforts to provide personcentered care, we want our
musical programs to allow
us to create a unique musical
experience for each resident.
When we least expect it,
music lifts the spirit. Various
programs at Ave Maria
have had great outcomes
incorporating music and
memory in our programming
efforts. We feel that our music
therapy program enhances
socialization, eating habits,
and the overall well-being for
residents in the nursing home,
in assisted living, and in our
Adult Day Center. Research
has shown the effects of music
are unlike other creative
interventions because music
sparks multiple parts of the
brain at one time, instead of
just one particular area. We
see the strong effects of music
every time live performers
come to Ave Maria Home.
The music program that
successfully started in St.
Luke Cottage with Amber
Brown has spread throughout
Ave Maria. Now we need you,
or someone you know, to help
us expand the music therapy
program throughout Ave
Maria. With the generosity of
the Wings of Ave Maria, we
have been able to provide a
CD player for each resident
of the nursing home and St.
Luke Cottage. With the help
of staff, volunteers, residents
and families, we are able to
create musical programs for
residents to engage in and

Week 2015

Ave Maria residents and staff enjoyed a spring picnic,
mariachi band, anda food truck festival during
National Nursing Home Week.
Music enhances . . . con’t.
Bring on the Fiesta was the theme of National Nursing
Home Week, which was celebrated at Ave Maria and at
long-term care communities around the country, May
10-16. During the week, residents, family members, and
staff enjoyed activities which emphasized ‘Familia, Vida,
and Amor’ (family, life and love in Spanish). Festivities
included a spring picnic with hamburgers and King
Cotton® hot dogs donated by Monogram Foods Group in
honor of the company’s 10th Anniversary and Impact 10
campaign; a mariachi band playing Latin music; a food
truck festival; an essay contest on What Caring Means with
a $100 cash award; and encouraging staff to enter baby
pictures for a “Who Can Name the Most Babies” contest.
Marlene Siegel, Ave Maria administrator, spearheaded
the weeklong events, stating: “Our nursing home staff are
committed to providing a meaningful, faith based, homelike environment for our elders, and providing the highest
level of care to meet their emotional, physical, and spiritual
needs. We want to recognize and thank the everyday
efforts of the staff, family members, and volunteers who
help make Ave Maria one of the best nursing home and
assisted living communities in West Tennessee.” National
Nursing Home Week is sponsored by the American Health
Care Association (AHCA) and by the Tennessee Health
Care Association (THCA), a nonprofit organization whose
members include long-term care communities located
throughout the state.
enjoy. Everyone deserves access to music that brings him
or her individual comfort and joy. Music therapy is our way
of engaging people who may have some level of cognitive
limitation, allowing them to enjoy listening to music.
With your help, our goal for the next few months is to record
each resident’s favorite music on an iPod or CD to listen to in
his or her room. Also, during the day, when residents are not
in their rooms, we would like to offer a musical activity once
a day. I have challenged our activities staff members in each
program area to use music for a daily expression of joy.
Do you know of a local musician or group of musicians,
young or old, who have time to volunteer for 15-30 minutes at
Ave Maria? Do you know a harpist who will play music in the
room of an elder on hospice? We all know that live music is
expensive, and we need your help to make musical programs
available for our residents.
For additional information, please check out www.
musicandmemory.org. I hope you will be as excited as we are
and want to help us. If you or someone you know, wants to
help, we are seeking volunteers to get involved in Ave Maria’s
music and memory programs. Also, we will need tech-savvy
volunteers to help us set up play lists and to help us develop an
extensive music library.
To find out more about the Ave Maria music and memory
program, please call me at (901) 386-3211, extension 2031. I
would love to discuss how you can help us with this project. You
are invited to donate an iPod shuffle or iTunes gifts cards to Ave
Maria Home, Inc. (Please note all contributions to Ave Maria
Home are tax deductible as allowed by law.)
As always, thank you for your continued support.

DEACON’S
Corner
In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “I
am the good shepherd. A shepherd
lays down his life for the sheep.”
Have you ever wondered why Jesus
uses sheep to relate to us? Why he
calls us his “flock”? Think about it. Sheep are social, as are
most of us. They are natural followers. Sheep feel safer in
a group and have a flocking instinct making them easier to
move as a group. Also sheep are generally non-combative,
which describes most of us. Have you ever heard of a sheep
attacking anyone?
Jesus calls himself, “the good shepherd.” He tells us that a
good shepherd would die for his flock. How many shepherds
do you think would really die for one of their sheep? If a
sheep strayed out onto I-240, how many shepherds do you
think would run out to save them? How many would take a
hit from an eighteen wheeler to save a sheep? How many of
us would allow people to torture us and nail us to a cross to
save others? That’s what Jesus is talking about. He would
do anything to save us.
In his declaration, “I am the good shepherd,” Jesus was
telling us in his own way, how much he loves us and how he
will die for us. He is the greatest preacher who ever lived.
Jesus had a way of bringing us into his preaching by using
examples to get our attention and invented new ways to use
words. One example is his statement, “I am the way, and the
truth, and the life.” In those few words he summed up his
whole mission and his whole promise to us.
Jesus tells us that sheep know the voice of their shepherd
and will follow him anywhere. We all should know the
voice of our good shepherd and follow him where he leads
us because we know that our good shepherd, Jesus Christ,
will lead us only to good. He not only told us how to live our
lives, he lived his life as one of us. How do we know that
the voice we hear is the voice of the Jesus? His voice never
leads us astray. His voice gives comfort and salvation. His
is the recognizable voice of the good shepherd. Remember
what God said of him. “This is my beloved Son, listen to
him.”
In Christ, Deacon Jack

on Sunday, January 11, at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
Over 1,000 guests enjoyed fine Italian cuisine from 15 local
restaurants, and traditional Italian music by Tony Barrasso
and D.J. Michael Spano. Participating restaurants were Ciao
Baby! Collierville, Central BBQ, Coletta’s, Elfo’s Restaurant,
Folk’s Folly, Garibaldi’s, Grawemeyer’s, Lucchesi’s Pasta,
Lynchburg Legends, Pesces’s Authentic Italian Sausage,
Pete & Sam’s, The Italian Rebel, The Racquet Club, The
Rendezvous, and Rizzo’s Diner. Wine, beer, and soft drinks
were provided by A.S. Barbaro, Athen’s Distributing,
Buster’s Wine and Liquors, Coca-Cola, Delta Wholesale,
Glazer’s Distributing, John and Wanda Barzizza, and West
Tennessee Crown Distributing.
Rev. Msgr. John B. McArthur, pastor of St. Louis
Catholic Church, was recognized as the Honored Guest of
Winterfest. McArthur is a long-time supporter of numerous
local and Catholic organizations, including Ave Maria
Home and the Catholic Schools. According to Barrasso,
a co-founder of Italian Winterfest: “We are thrilled to
honor Msgr. McArthur as our guest of Italian Winterfest. Frank J. Gattuso, Jr. and Janet Donato
His service and dedication to the Catholic Church and its
many missions is parallel with our mission of supporting
Catholic education and senior care at the Ave Maria Home,
therefore making him a perfect choice.”
This year’s Italian Winterfest was dedicated to the
memory of Angelo Lucchesi and Sam Bomarito, who, along
with Barrasso, founded Italian Winterfest to raise funds for
the Catholic Education Scholarship Fund and to provide
assistance to Ave Maria residents who are exhausting their
resources. This year’s event raised almost $40,000.
