Not the most profound quote, perhaps, but it is true. We have many things to be excited about and thankful for, and I am proud to share some of our recent accomplishments. Perfect ACT Score and West Point For the second straight year, a Roncalli Catholic senior scored a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. This is an impressive accomplishment, as less than 1% of students taking the test nationwide achieve such a score. Another one of our seniors recently accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. In the 2010-11 school year, our students performed more than 8,000 hours of volunteer work. These perfect scores, high honors and community service commitments are a testament to the remarkable students we attract and to the quality education they receive at Roncalli Catholic. Campus-wide Improvements Thanks to the generous gift from the Lied Foundation and support from many other donors and volunteers, we have been able to complete many important campus-wide improvement projects. Our parking lot was completely renovated, including landscaping, sidewalks and visitor parking. An electronic message board now greets passers-by and visitors coming to our school. The board provides timely information about school functions, achievements and activities. Generous donations and a great deal of volunteer work have allowed us to create a 4,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose Activity Center through the combination and renovation of four former classrooms. The Activity Center will serve as the new home for our wrestling team, and will be used by our cheerleaders and dance team, for alumni reunions and a variety of other school functions. The installation of our new, competition grade track is now complete and rounds out our extensive Rummel Stadium project. The track will be striped this spring and ready for practice and on-campus meets. This track project was made possible thanks to a gift from the Mary Davlin Johnson Ratcliff Charitable Trust. (A portion of this gift also provides important tuition assistance.) Our stadium press box was completed in time for this fall’s football games. And, speaking of football – our Varsity team finished an outstanding season with a first-ever home play-off win. More than 1,000 spectators packed Rummel Stadium bleachers for a great night of football. Increase In Enrollment Perhaps the most important accomplishment over the past year has been the increase we saw in enrollment. With 340+ students, our enrollment has reached its highest level in more than a decade. This fall, we welcomed students from more than 60 parishes and other private and public schools, and we continue to attract students from Bellevue to Bennington, Florence to Elkhorn. Sound Financial Position I want to draw special attention to page 17, as you will note our operating expenses and income for the 2010-2011 school year. Thanks to many generous donations and fiscal prudence, we finished the year in a sound financial position. The first four months of our 2011-2012 budget cycle show continued financial strength due to growing enrollment and tuition income, ongoing donations and successful fundraising activities. This is all on the heels of our successful, $2.75 million, “Worth Fighting For” capital campaign, which allowed us to accomplish so many important goals. Beginning on page 16, there is a listing of our Annual Report of Donors. I greatly appreciate the many contributions that have been made to our campus improvement projects and tuition assistance programs. Soon you will receive our Fall Annual Fund Appeal; please consider supporting our ongoing efforts. You may make a secure donation online at roncallicatholic.org or use the envelope included with this magazine. All in all, 2011 was a great success for our school. Roncalli Catholic High School is an exceptional place for our students to grow in wisdom, courage and faith. Our Catholic traditions, academic structure, diverse student body and extra-curricular activities are second to none. Like I said before, I couldn’t be any more excited about what’s going on here! I hope you are too. Sincerely, Jeff Dempsey, President, Roncalli Catholic High School Roncalli Catholic High School 4 2011 Swing with Pride Golf Open Raises $40,000 for Roncalli Catholic The 22nd Annual Swing with Pride, Leavitt Memorial Golf Open was held on August 8 and raised $40,000 to support scholarships and tuition grant programs for the students of Roncalli Catholic. The event was sponsored by Mutual of Omaha Bank and held at a new venue, The Player’s Club at Deer Creek. Tommie Frazier, former Nebraska quarterback, and Johnny Rodgers, the 1972 Heisman Trophy winner from Nebraska, were among the golfers. Each signed footballs that were part of the silent auction at the event. Participants paid $125 each or $500 for foursomes. Raffle/mulligan tickets were sold for $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00 at a chance to win major prizes. A social hour, silent auction, raffle giveaways and dinner program followed the golfing portion of the fundraiser. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was retired sports anchor, Dave Webber. Culinary Arts Teacher Cathy Leak Honored in Chicago, May 21 Cathy Leak, Roncalli Catholic’s Foods and Nutrition and Culinary Arts teacher, was honored with the ProStart Educator Excellence Award for Nebraska for 2011. Presented May 21 in Chicago, the award recognizes Leak’s commitment to education in the restaurant and food service industry. More specifically, Leak implemented the national ProStart program at Roncalli Catholic. ProStart is a culinary training program for high school students who intend to attend culinary school. As a two-year curriculum, participating students are exposed to management skills as well as culinary techniques, with a goal of teaching all facets of the restaurant industry. This is not the first time Leak has been recognized for outstanding efforts. In fact, the culinary team that she leads for Roncalli Catholic has won the state ProStart competition and attended the national competition for the past two years. All students are eligible for the Roncalli Catholic culinary teams and they include up to four students per team. Winning these competitions can result in scholarship money for the students at particular culinary schools. Did you know ... ? “Roncalli Catholic has seen an increase in enrollment. RCHS Chaplain PINK Ribbons Dominate at Roncalli Catholic Volleyball Games Roncalli Catholic had its second annual “Pink Out” at the Oct. 10 home volleyball games. A “Pink Out” means that the players and the fans all wear pink or pink ribbons in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is the month of October. Players, students and fans participated by buying a “Pink Out” event shirt ahead of time and wearing it to the volleyball games. The money raised from the t-shirt sales went to Liz’s Legacy, a charitable program that supports cancer research, education and patient care at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center. There was also a raffle at the games for a breast cancer awareness bracelet donated by Elisa Illana to benefit Liz’s Legacy. Shirley Solis, breast cancer survivor and grandmother to Roncalli Catholic students Natalie Solis (Senior) and Jason Solis (Freshman), won the raffle for the bracelet. Overall, the event raised more than $1,000 for the fund, a big increase from last year’s $600 donation. PRIDE December 2011 Fr. Chi Joins Roncalli Catholic Family as Chaplain Father Chibuzor Gerald Igboanusi joined Roncalli Catholic this year as the school’s new chaplain. Known as Father Chi, Igboanusi is also the associate pastor at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Born and raised in a strong Catholic family in West Africa, Father Chi is the sixth son and the youngest of 13 children. He originally came to the United States in 2000 to pursue a second undergraduate degree at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, graduating with a B.A. in Communications in 2003. His first undergraduate degree was in Philosophy from the Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College in Owerri, Nigeria. Next, he pursued graduate studies in Communications at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. While there, Father Chi decided to respond to God’s call to the diocesan priesthood, and in the fall of 2004, he joined the Archdiocese of Omaha. He was ordained a priest on June 7, 2008 by the Most Rev. Elden Francis Curtiss, Archbishop of Omaha. In 2008, Father Chi received his first assignment as a priest at St. Stephen the Martyr Parish in West Omaha, where he served as an associate pastor. He founded the St. Stephen the 7 Martyr Young Adult Ministry, also known as “Adults Serving a Purpose” (ASAP), as well as “the Nazarenes,” a vibrant Charismatic Prayer Ministry, while serving at St. Stephen. While at Roncalli Catholic, Father Chi says his goal is to help our students grow in their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and become responsible adults who will embody Christ’s message of unconditional love, compassion and forgiveness to others. Father Chi earned a Certificate from the Institute for Priestly Formation at Creighton University in 2005, and a Certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education from Alegent Health in 2006. He attended Mount Angel Seminary at St. Benedict in Oregon and earned a Master of Arts degree in Sacred Scripture in 2007, and a Master of Divinity in Sacred Theology in 2008. That same year, Father Chi also earned a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology from Collegio Sant´ Anselmo (Benedictine College of St. Anselm) in Rome, Italy. He is currently working on a graduate degree in Counseling at Creighton University. Check us out online for updates to events and activities: roncallicatholic.org Mark your calendars! Archbishop George Lucas to Be Honored at 2012 Festa del Leone, Saturday, April 14 Roncalli Catholic High School will host its largest fundraising event, Festa del Leone, on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The signature dinner and auction raises important tuition monies for the 340+ young men and women of Roncalli Catholic. The cost is $125 per person. Patron table sponsorships, as well as underwriting and advertising opportunities are available and welcomed. The evening will include silent and live auctions, a lottery drawing, special giveaways and the presentation of the Pope John XXIII Award. Roncalli Catholic is pleased to honor Archbishop George Lucas with the Pope John XXIII award. The Most Reverend George J. Lucas was named Archbishop of Omaha on June 3, 2009, and was installed on July 22, 2009. Prior to joining the Omaha Archdiocese, he served for nearly 10 years in the Diocese of Springfield, Illinois, where he was ordained a bishop on December 14, 1999. Volunteers needed for this important event! Committees are currently gathering donations for auctions, constructing the decorations for the evening and preparing invitations and other printed materials. The Event Chairs for Festa 2012 are Bill and Judi Larson; Leonard (Rummel 1972) and Kate Sommer will serve as Honorary Chairs. Volunteers are still needed for this important Roncalli Catholic fundraising event. Contact Carol Higgins at (402) 571-7670 ext. 113 or [email protected] for additional information. 8 Roncalli Catholic High School Our Honored Alums of 2011 2011 Alum of the Year: 2011 Honorary Alumni of the Year: Jerry Solis (Class of 1983) Carol and John Higgins Mr. Jerry Solis was honored as the Roncalli Catholic Alum of the Year during the 2011 Alumni Induction Breakfast in May. Jerry fondly recalls the family and friendly atmosphere of Roncalli Catholic from his youth and notes that the same atmosphere still exists, even within the volunteers he works with at the school. He graduated from Roncalli Catholic in 1983 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business and a minor in Real Estate Finance from UNO. He was an agent for CBS Real Estate for three and a half years before joining his father’s business, Solis Painting, which his parents started in 1983. He is currently the owner of the family business. As busy as he is, Jerry still finds time to volunteer at Roncalli Catholic. He is on the Booster Club, is part of the Junior Pride Athletic Association, leads the baseball tournament and the 6th Grade baseball team for Junior Pride, and has worked on several noteworthy projects. He has rolled up his sleeves and helped with restroom remodeling inside the school, outside concessions, football stadium, auditorium remodel, indoor batting cage, baseball press box, and painting the locker room floor as well as the Activity Center. Jerry says his reason for volunteering at RCHS is to keep the costs lower for kids to be able to play sports and participate in other activities. Jerry’s wife, Julie (Harrison) Solis is also a 1983 graduate and the Prom Queen of RCHS. They have five children: Brendan (‘09) and Janelle (’10) have already graduated from RCHS; Natalie (’12) and Jason (’15) are current students and Sam (’20) is currently a 4th grader at St. Pius/St. Leo’s Catholic School. They are not Roncalli Catholic graduates but with Roger Higgins as an example, Carol and John Higgins were inspired to join The Pride Family. Roger Higgins was John’s father. He joined the school in 1980 and wore many hats during his time at Roncalli Catholic - from teacher to coach to assistant principle. More than his work on the field or in the classroom, Roger inspired others with his passion and commitment to the programs and students at Roncalli Catholic. Following his retirement in 1990, he continued to coach Track alongside his daughter, Cele Finley, and helped with maintenence of the campus grounds. One of his greatest efforts was to make a competition grade track at Roncalli Catholic. His dream became a reality this year; the track will be ready to go for the Spring season thanks to generous donations made in his memory. Donations can still be made for continued improvements of the track and stadium facility. Carol and John were named honorary alumni for all of their past and continued efforts on behalf of Roncalli Catholic at the Graduation Breakfast in May. In 2005, immediately after their oldest child, Colin ’09, started his Freshman year, John and Carol became involved at the school. They immediately started volunteering to help with the school’s fundraising efforts, served on the Booster Club and sat on numerous volunteer boards. Before long, they were devoting much of their time to Roncalli Catholic. They both became heavily involved with Festa del Leone, serving as Chairs in 2007. In fact, they became active volunteers on all of the school’s fundraising efforts and activities. While Carol helped with the post-prom committee, helped cook football dinners and volunteered at events, John served as President of the Summer Legion Baseball Program, a member of the stadium committee and even helped coach the basketball team. Although they no longer have a child at Roncalli Catholic, the couple’s commitment to serving the school remains. In fact, with their youngest child starting Kindergarten this year, Carol has taken on the role of Events Coordinator at RCHS. John is the President and Owner of Weatherguard, Inc. – a roofing, siding and gutter company. He is also a NCAA men’s Division I Basketball official. The couple has three children: Colin, currently attending UNL, Meryl, who is attending Kansas University, and Joshua, who started Kindergarten at Cecilia’s Cathedral this year. PRIDE December 2011 9 FROM OUR FRONT COVER The Roncalli Catholic CRIMSON PRIDE Season Ends with Play-off Win in Home Stadium The Roncalli Catholic CRIMSON PRIDE football team finished the 2011 season with a win at the very first play-off game in their home stadium, a 6-4 record and some impressive achievements by individual players. According the Head Coach Mike Berens, the key to the team’s success was the confidence and commitment of the players. “When you reach the playoffs the players take accountability and become a team - every player doing their job,” said Berens. “ I thought the 2011 team became more confident in their abilities and worked hard to achieve what they did.” The team secured a place in the first round of the play-offs with a 41-20 win over Douglas County West on October 20. Thanks to the win, the school hosted their first-ever play-off game at their very own Rummel Stadium on Oct. 27. Pictured above is sophomore DeQuan Bell, RCHS who rushed for more than 1350 yards this season. PRIDE FOOTBALL PhotographY by This game was a rematch of Roncalli Catholic’s 24-21 victory at Fort Calhoun on Sept. 9. Since then, Fort Calhoun had won six games and was the C-1, District 3 Champion. The rematch resulted in a 28-13 win and a first round play-off win for the CRIMSON PRIDE. Steven Branscombe The second round play-off game against Columbus Lakeview on November 2 resulted in a 20-40 loss for the team. Roncalli Catholic 2011 Football Schedule and Stats According to Roncalli Catholic Athletic Director Jim Meister, the 6-4 record is important since the team had only one win in 2009 and no wins in 2010. “This season was such an improvement over the past two seasons,” said Meister. “We had more wins than losses, won all the close games, made it to the second round of the play-offs and hosted our first home play-off game.” 9/2/11 Tekamah-Herman 9/9/11 @ Fort Calhoun 38-0 W 24-21 W 9/16/11 @ Platteview 9/23/11 Syracuse 28-26 W 9/30/11 @ Wahoo 0-20 L 10/7/11 Bishop Neumann 14-49 L 10/14/11 Ashland-Greenwood 12-6 W 10/20/11 @ Douglas County West 41-20 W STATE PLAY-OFF GAMES 10/27/11 @ RCHS - Fort Calhoun 19-46 L 11/2/11 @ Clearwater Lakeview 28-13 W 20-40 L Meister attributes the team’s success to the experience of the players and the fact that more students went out for football this year. Several players in the starting line-up were upper classmen who had been through the losing seasons and many basketball players decided to try football this year. DeQuan Bell, Sophomore, rushed for more than 1350 yards. According to Meister, anything over 1000 yards is rare in Nebraska. Cooper Sedlacek, Senior, led the team in tackles. For the play-by-play details of Roncalli Catholic’s first round play-off win, check out the Omaha World-Herald article at http://www.neprepzone.com/ article/20111027/PREPZONE/710279726/1215#ball-bounces-roncalli-s-way. 10 We Honor our Volunteers Roncalli Catholic High School New to Faculty: 2011 Volunteers of the Year Jim and Jill Meister Each year, Roncalli Catholic recognizes individuals who give generously of their time, talent and treasure to support the mission of the school. The 2011 Volunteers of the Year are Jim and Jill Meister and family. Jim joined RCHS in 1992 as a part-time teacher and coach for basketball, football and track. In January 2007 he was promoted to Athletic Director and continues to coach basketball and now golf as well. Jim has always done so much more than his job description outlines. He has been instrumental in campus landscaping and beautification projects, including mowing, planting, laying sod and fencing. Jim has also been an active participant in facility improvements, repainting window sills, washing the exterior of the building, as well as working on the new Activity Center and stadium. Jill is the coordinator of the new i-volunteer website for RCHS. This innovative online volunteer sign up site will allow for greater ease in coordinating volunteers for school events. She has been involved in all of the school’s fundraising events; serving on committees, helping with last minute preparations and doing data entry, when needed. The Meisters have three children who, alongside their parents, have volunteered at Roncalli Catholic as well. Cole is a Freshman at Roncalli Catholic; students at St. James Seton School, Halley is a 7th grader and Jaye is a kindergartner. The whole Meister family was recognized for their support and hard work at the New Family Welcome dinner held at the beginning of the school year. ZACH BYRD Welcome our New Science Teacher According to Zach Byrd, Science was always his favorite subject in school. So, becoming a Science teacher was a logical fit for his career. Mr. Byrd joined the Roncalli Catholic Science Department this fall. More specifically, he is teaching Biology, Earth Science and Physical Science. He is also coaching the freshman basketball team and serving as one of the assistant coaches on the CRIMSON PRIDE football team. Born and raised in Bennington, NE, Mr. Byrd has returned to the area after a two-year stint at Scribner-Synder Community Schools, which was his first teaching job. This is his third year teaching. PRIDE December 2011 11 Three New Teachers Join Roncalli Catholic Family Marshall Keough darren probst Welcome our New Music Teacher Welcome our New Government Teacher Marshall Keough’s love of music and working with young people made his career choice an easy one. As the new Music teacher at Roncalli Catholic, he will get to do both. More specifically, Keough will be teaching music and working with the choir, band and pep band. According to Darren Probst, he became a Government teacher because he wanted to have an effect on future generations and he enjoys discussing current issues. In his new position at Roncalli Catholic he will have plenty of opportunities to do both. According to Keough, he has always loved music and its ability to unite people. At Roncalli Catholic, he is teaching U.S. Government, AP Government, Street Law, Economics and Personal Finance, Psychology and Sociology. “I find that music is the perfect medium to reach people,” says Keough. “In some ways it’s like another language that everyone can speak.” Keough started tutoring other students in junior high school and continued through college. He enjoyed teaching so much that he decided it was the career path for him. Roncalli Catholic is much larger than the school Keough attended. Growing up in Arcadia, NE, his graduating class had only eight students. Next, he attended Wayne State College, where he met his wife, Victoria, and earned his degree in music education. This is his first teaching job. He is enthusiastic about Roncalli Catholic and impressed by the students’ desire to learn. “There is a wealth of talent to be found in these goodnatured kids,” said Keough, “and, they are more than willing to work to improve their skills.” As a Fremont, NE native, Darren earned his teaching degree at Midland Lutheran College (now Midland University) in his hometown. His first teaching job was at Southeast Nebraska Consolidated School in Stella, NE where he spent three years teaching 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies, U.S. History, World History, Modern History, Geography and Anthropology. He spent the next three years as a graduate assistant football coach at Midland University. Please help us welcome Zach Byrd , Marshall Keough and Darren Probst as part of the Roncalli Catholic High School Family! 12 We Remember Those Who Have Died Roncalli Catholic High School The following were enrolled in the Roncalli Catholic High School Memorial Association between October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011 Lois J. Retired Roncalli Catholic teacher Mary Susan “Sue” O’Brien was born April 7, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska. She joined the faculty of Roncalli Catholic in 1975 and taught Humanities until her retirement in 1987. Most would say she taught a lot more than that. Although Sue was stricken with crippling rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 19, she refused to let it get in her way. During her time at RCHS she had already learned that she could walk backward with the use of a cane. She discovered that you don’t bend your knees the same way when you walk backwards, and she was able to get around walking backward for eleven years. In 1980 she went to the Mayo Clinic and had surgery on her knees and was then able to walk forward. Sue grew up in the Cathedral area, graduated from Omaha Duchesne Academy and attended Maryville College in Kansas for a year. She left college and answered the call to become a sister with the order of the Sacred Heart in Omaha. She then moved to California to earn her Bachelor’s degree and MA degree from the University of San Diego while serving with the order in California. She left the order at the age of 42 and moved back to Omaha to be with her mother and to finish her doctoral dissertation. She got her doctorate at the University of St. Louis in 1980. She taught at the high school level in California and Nebraska for 21 years. In Omaha she taught Humanities at Cathedral before joining RCHS. She also taught part-time at Metropolitan Community College, tutored students in her home and wrote poetry. Frank W. Roth Jr., grandfather of Laura ‘12 and Matt ‘13 John M. With his appointment to West Point Academy, Joe is one step closer to not only serving, but becoming a leader in the U.S. Army. In order to qualify for West Point, Joe had to prove his academic, athletic and leadership abilities. Located 50 miles north of New York City, West Point Academy is known as the world’s premier leader development institution. The institution’s mission involves developing students, known as cadets, intellectually, physically, militarily, ethically, spiritually and socially. All cadets graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in one of 40 majors and are fully prepared to be a leader in the U.S. Army. Congress to even be considered a candidate. Since Joe’s dad is a service member and a West Point graduate (class of 1990) he was eligible to apply for a Presidential nomination, which he received in May. Following his education, Joe plans to go into the Engineer branch and join the U.S. Army Special Forces. His ultimate goal is serving as an officer in the U.S. Army. At Roncalli Catholic, Joe has been involved in Track, National Honor Society, Student Ambassadors, and he is an officer in the Future Business Leaders of America. In his free time, Joe plays hockey for the Omaha Lancers AAA U18 team. Students hoping to attend the institution usually need a nomination from a member of PRIDE Magazine Is Going Electronic! Alum Lands a Lead Role in Mamma Mia! Broadway Tour John-Michael Zuerlein (Class of 1993) came full circle in his acting career when he performed at the Orpheum Theater, where he first fell in love with musical theater. Last March, he was in town playing the part of Bill, one the three ex-boyfriends of the female lead in the Broadway tour of the hit musical Mama Mia! Zuerlein premiered his acting and singing talents at Roncalli Catholic, where he performed in such musicals as “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and “Godspell,” to name a few. He said he has fond memories of Roncalli Catholic and would encourage students who share his dream to work on anything they can, in any capacity. “All experience is good,” said Zuerlein. “You will spend many years working for little pay, and more than talent, it’s about networking.” Following high school, Zuerlein earned an acting degree from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. His first job after college was with the Nebraska Theatre Caravan. Next, he did regional theater in the Minneapolis area for five years before moving on to do the same in the Kansas City area. Most of Zuerlein’s family has remained in the Omaha area. He has been on the road with the Mamma Mia! Broadway tour for two years and has already signed on for another year. When he’s finished with the show he plans to move to New York City. If you would like more information on Zuerlein and his acting career visit his website at www.jmznyc.com. John-Michael Zuerlein (Class of 1993) far left (and inset) on-stage during a production of MAMMA Mia! Did you know ... ? “Generous donations and a great deal of volunteer work have allowed Roncalli Catholic to create a 4,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose Activity Center through the combination and renovation of four former classrooms. The Activity Center will serve as the new home for our wrestling team, and will be used by our cheerleaders and dance team, for alumni reunions and a variety of other school functions.” — Jeff Dempsey, President RCHS — Read more on page 3 and see the list of our generous supporters starting on page 16. 26 Roncalli Catholic High School Roncalli Catholic 2011 Class Reunions RUMMEL CLASS OF 1971 CLASSES OF 1971 RUMMEL AND NOTRE DAME 40th reunion The Rummel and Notre Dame Classes of 1971 had a combined 40th Class Reunion on August 5 and 6. Pictured left: Hannah Ramsgard, who won first place, and Katelyn Reber both qualified for state at the district cross country meet. According to Head Coach, Jim McClurkin, the CRIMSON PRIDE Cross Country Team won more medals this year than any other season in the four years that he has been with the team. Just one week later, Hannah went on to win first place in the same race at the district track meet held on October 13 at Mount Michael. With this win, she qualified for the state cross country meet, which was held in Kearney on October 21. Katelyn Reber and Caleb Petersen also qualified for state at the district cross country meet. Jim McClurkin joined Roncalli Catholic 15 years ago as the Sprinter and Relay Coach for the Track Team and became the Cross Country Coach four years ago. The Cross Country Team is coed and consists of 20 runners. At the state cross country meet, Hannah placed sixth out of 93 runners, completing the 4000 meter race in 15 minutes and 33 seconds. That’s about two and a half miles in 15:33 minutes. Previously, her personal best in this event was 16 minutes. In addition to the number of medals earned by the team as a whole, three runners qualified for the State Cross Country Meet. There were several other noteworthy accomplishments as well. The school record in this event is 15:28 and was set in 1986 by Dodie Kocsis, when she won the state cross country meet. She also won state in 1985. Hannah Ramsgard, Roncalli Catholic Sophomore, was the first student from our school within the past 20 years to win first place at the River City Conference. Held on October 6 at Skutt High School, the meet is held each year for all the teams in the River City Conference to compete at once. She was also named a member of the All State Girls Cross Country team and earned All Conference recognition, which means she finished in the Top 10 in her category. “I think Hannah will eventually exceed that school record,” said Coach McClurkin. “Overall, she had a great season and placed third or higher at all but one meet.” Teammates Katelyn Reber, Roncalli Catholic Senior and 2011 Homecoming Queen, and Caleb Petersen, Sophomore, also earned All Conference recognition. Kelli Soltys, Sophomore, was recognized as a member of the All State Academic Team; this honor is granted to cross country runners exhibiting excellence in academics. At the state cross country meet, Katelyn ran the 4000 meter race in 17:14 and Caleb ran the men’s 5000 meter race (a little over three miles) in 18:00. With the new track at Roncalli Catholic, practice will be easier for all of the runners on campus, the Cross Country and Track Team as well. The Cross Country Team will train weekly on the school track next year. In the past, the regular Track team has had practice in the parking lot or school hallways. McClurkin says that the new track should result in fewer injuries, attract more runners and boost morale, especially if we are able to host a home track meet. PRIDE December 2011 29 Two RCHS Students, J. Price Comstock ’11 and Tom Mullen ’12, Achieve Perfect ACT Scores Pictured: J. Price Comstock ’11 (left) and Tom Mullen ’12. Roncalli Catholic is proud to announce that two of our students achieved back-to-back perfect 36 ACT scores – one in 2010 and another in 2011. Rummel’s first Valedictorian, graduating in 1968. As owner of Aim High Test Prep Inc. he was also in a unique position to help Roncalli Catholic students prepare for this important test. To understand the magnitude of this accomplishment, consider these facts. Only one-tenth of one percent of the students taking the test across the country each year achieves a perfect score. Nebraska does better than most of the states, ranking fourth out of the 50 states. Still, only 16 out of more than 16,000 Nebraska graduates achieved a perfect ACT score in the 2010-2011 school year. Aim High Test Prep Inc. has two ACT programs which include 36 hour seminars as well as ACT test preparation for individuals. Between these two programs, Pat Coyle has helped more than 1,200 students prepare for the ACT test. Roncalli Catholic is the only high school that offers his program. In fact, we are the only Catholic high school in Omaha that has offered any such program for our students. One of those perfect scores belonged to J. Price Comstock who graduated from Roncalli Catholic in 2011. He is now a freshman in UNO’s College of Information Science and Technology. The second perfect score was earned by Tom Mullen, a senior at Roncalli Catholic this year. More specifically, the course at Roncalli Catholic includes 35 lessons of intensive study, covering all four areas of the multiple choice test (English, Math, Reading and Science) to prepare the students for their actual ACT test. This success can be somewhat attributed to our challenging and results-oriented ACT prep course, which is offered as part of our English curriculum for juniors. The ACT test is a nationally recognized college entrance exam covering English, Math, Reading and Science. The test assesses a student’s educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. Second only to a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) it is often used as a benchmark for college admittance as well as to determine scholarship and grant distribution. The prep course was added to our curriculum in January 2007 thanks to the generous support of Pat Coyle, a Rummel High School alumni on a mission to help our current students reach their full potential. (All-boys Rummel High School merged with all-girls Notre Dame Academy in 1974 to become the co-educational Roncalli Catholic High School). Aim High Test Prep and Pat Coyle, Rummel Class of 1968, have helped more than 1,200 students prepare for the ACT test. Pat Coyle said he was motivated to give back to his alma mater because of the excellent education he received as The course is taught by Adam Snoza, our junior English teacher, and he has helped to adapt Coyle’s program to the learning environment at Roncalli Catholic. A pre-test is given in October, prior to the start of the course for comparison of student scores. Since its inception the course has boosted overall ACT scores for our students by an average of three points. This is just one more example of how Roncalli Catholic strives to help our students achieve academic excellence. Thanks to the women decked out in their high tea finery (more than 400 in all) over $20,000 was raised to provide a Catholic education for our students in need of tuition assistance. Held on Sunday, November 6, the 11th Annual High Tea event featured award-winning Omaha artist Shirley Neary, who presented “Celebrating Creativity Every Day.” Neary is best known for her art quilts and, more recently, as the owner of the new Cupcake Island. Her extraordinary quilting methods include hand-dyed and hand-printed fabrics as well as appliqué, collage and scanned images. This fall she is opening a quilt showroom in Dundee to feature her works. This event is a Roncalli Catholic tradition that encourages creativity and fun while raising funds for scholarship and tuition grant programs for our students. Each year, Rummel Gymnasium is converted into a large tea room, with Hostesses decorating each table in their own unique theme.
