Roncalli Catholic PRIDE
December 2010
Mr.Jeff Dempsey, our President
Dear Roncalli Catholic Parents, Alimni, and Friends,
A September 2010, America magazine article entitled, The Catholic Schools We Need, authored by the Archbishop of New
York, the Most Rev. Timothy M. Dolan, concludes with the following quote from the Most Rev. Roger J. Foys, Bishop of
Covington; “While there may be alternatives to Catholic education, there are no substitutes.”
To be sure, there are alternatives to Roncalli Catholic High School. Omaha is blessed to have a good number of quality
Catholic, and other private and public school options. Though, for the students who have chosen to attend Roncalli Catholic;
for the parents who sacrifice financially and who entrust us with their children; for the community who relies on us in many
ways; for all of our faculty and staff, past and present, who truly care for and about our students; for the many who offered
their time, talents and treasure to create Rummel Stadium and to renovate the Notre Dame Auditorium; and for those who
continue to believe in our mission and to support our campaign, Annual Fund and ongoing tuition assistance initiatives -there is no substitute for Roncalli Catholic.
Thank you to all of you who have given such tremendous gifts in support of Roncalli Catholic during our Worth Fighting For
campaign. Our work continues as we seek to meet the goals of the campaign. Tuition assistance dollars remain a top priority as
well as the completion of our stadium project, which includes the installation of a new track. In 2011, support received through the
campaign will allow us to renovate our parking lot and make campus landscaping improvements. Work continues as we modernize
several classrooms and make other facilities improvements. Beyond the campaign, our need to generate additional support will
continue. This should not be seen as a daunting task, rather a reality shared by Catholic schools throughout our city and country,
and I look forward to working with the Roncalli Catholic family to achieve our worthy goals.
Additional thanks to the many of you who have offered encouragement and guidance during my first year as President
of Roncalli Catholic. Msgr. James Gilg, Fr. Lloyd Gnirk and so many alumni, friends, parents, students, faculty and staff have
been welcoming and encouraging, and I very much appreciate the support.
As our mission statement affirms, we strive every day at Roncalli Catholic to educate our students and prepare them to
meet life’s challenges and opportunities with wisdom, courage and faith – and, we are blessed in our ability to do so. We are
compelled to live-up to our mission and I look forward to our work together in support of quality, faith-based education at
Roncalli Catholic – for which, I believe, there is no substitute.
“Merry Christmas,
God bless you

continue to bless

Roncalli Catholic PRIDE
December 2010
Fr. Gnirk, our President Emeritus
Dear Members of the Roncalli Catholic Family,
I’m sure many of you are aware of the leadership transition at Roncalli. Effective July 1, 2010, Jeff Dempsey became the
president of Roncalli, Chad Holtz, previously Assistant Principal, is now principal and I am privileged to serve as President
Emeritus. It is my hope to continue to be involved with the Roncalli Catholic Family assisting with Development and Institutional
Advancement. This new position will also permit me to devote more time to the people of my parish, St. John’s in Valley.
Festa 2010 was held on April 10, 2010. Over 400 attendees enjoyed a great evening, raising $116,724 for tuition assistance for
our students. Honored that evening as the Honorary Alum was Paul Wolff, a current parent and coordinator of the Rummel
Stadium project. The prestigious Pope John XXIII award was presented to Jeff and Amy Schmid for their dedication to Catholic
education in the Archdiocese of Omaha and service to the “children and friends of God.”
We are hoping to wrap up our Capital Campaign in the near future. To date, we have pledges for $1,303,111 in tuition
assistance for our students and $903,350 for capital improvement projects, including the stadium and Notre Dame Auditorium.
Included in that figure is a $545,000 gift from the Lied Foundation that will enable us to get a new light board for the auditorium,
resurface the parking lot, and renovate some classrooms and restrooms. We are most grateful to Ms. Christina Hixson of the Lied
Foundation for this wonderful grant. In appreciation for her generous gifts to Roncalli Catholic and the community, we honor Ms.
Christina Hixson, of the Lied Foundation, as the Pope John XXIII Award recipient during Festa 2011. My gratitude to all who have
been instrumental in making the campaign so successful, including those who donated services, labor and gifts-in-kind.
The “Swing with Pride” Golf Open was held at Tiburon on August 30, 2010. A wonderful day was enjoyed by 164 golfers,
raising $43,888 for tuition assistance.
The above-mentioned activities would not happen without the hard work and dedication of volunteers who work the events
and also those who participate in them. My gratitude to all who helped
to make these events so successful.
In November you received our Annual Appeal mailing. I ask you
to give prayerful consideration to your gift. On behalf of our students, we
greatly appreciate your support.
May God continue to bless the work of our hands.

Roncalli Catholic PRIDE
December 2010
Fr. Starman, our Chaplain
Dear Roncalli Family,
This summer, Roncalli Catholic lost an ardent supporter with the passing of Coach Roger Higgens. All of us continue to extend
our sympathy to Roger’s family and friends, as well as to all those in the Roncalli Family who have lost family and friends in recent
months.
Each November, the Roncalli Catholic community gathers for its annual Memorial Mass. Our liturgy was held in the Archbishop
Rummel Gymnasium with Archbishop Emeritus Elden Curtiss as the principle celebrant. During the Mass, we continued our tradition
of “Call the Roll” naming all those enrolled in the Roncalli Catholic Memorial Association since last year’s celebration.
I have now entered my fifth year as Chaplain at Roncalli Catholic and I continue to be impressed by our faculty, staff, and students.
The energy and enthusiasm of everyone fills the hallways with excitement. The continued improvements to the school environment,
as well as the grounds, stadium, and practice fields, have helped to increase these excitement levels. The addition of new faculty, Mr.
Jim Hirz, Mrs. Kim Schumacher, Mrs. Jeanette Solberg, and our welcoming of a new president, Mr. Jeff Dempsey, and the new incoming
freshman and transfer students, help us to move forward with certainty into a promising future here at Roncalli Catholic.
I continue to be grateful to all those folks who are involved in the day-to-day operations of our academic and extracurricular
programs. I am also thankful those who work so hard and give so generously of their God-given gifts. They enable us to keep faithful
to our mission of educating our students to develop their potential and preparing them to meet the challenges and opportunities of life with
wisdom, courage and faith. Many of you are quietly working behind the scenes to move us forward. We could not fulfill our mission if
it were not for the ongoing support of our alumni, benefactors and so many faithful friends. All of us who study and work within
these walls thank you for your ongoing prayers and support.
I have reminded our students at the opening Mass of the Holy Spirit at the end of August that they are the benefactors of the
generosity of literally thousands of people they will probably never have the opportunity to meet. I asked them to be mindful of
the gift they’ve been given. I’ve asked them to also to be vigilant in the
stewardship of that gift, so that it can be passed on as they move to a new
stage of their lives. I’ll keep reminding them throughout the year. Please

Roger Higgins — Farewell to a Legendary Leader,
Roger Higgins - June 30, 1929 – June 20, 2010
This past June, friends and family gathered together to pay
their last respects to Roger Higgins, a community leader and
treasured friend of the Roncalli Catholic Family.
Born June 30, 1929 in Schuyler, Nebraska, Roger Higgins
was a sports enthusiast and family man from the start.
While at Schuyler High School, Roger excelled on the
courts and fields, pushing himself in football,
basketball, baseball and track. His passion for athletics
and natural ability to lead only grew from there. In
1949, while at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln,
Roger enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving the
majority of his time until 1951 in the South Pacific.
Following his service, Roger returned to the sports
arena at Wayne State College to play both football
and basketball, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree
and earning the recognition of “Little All-American” in football.
Roger also graduated from the University of Nebraska receiving
his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration.
“Mr. Everything” at Cathedral High School
Before beginning his career at Cathedral High School,
Roger and college sweetheart, Donna Sweeney, tied the knot
in Mitchell, SD. Roger and Donna met while he was at Wayne
State and she at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. The two would
later raise eight children.
In 1955, the couple relocated to Omaha and Roger began
his career teaching and coaching at Cathedral High School in
North Omaha. Over the next 19 years, Roger served as
principal (two years), Athletic Director, taught biology and
coached sports teams in basketball, baseball, football and golf.
He was heralded “Mr. Everything” by his biggest fans and
esteemed colleagues.
Roger continually encouraged his students to
“study hard in class, and play hard on the field;
to be champions not only on the court,
but also in their work.”
— Cathedral Chimes —
Roger’s enthusiasm and guidance led the Cardinal’s
football team to take the state title in 1968, and later the Class
B State Basketball title in 1972. Roger was commended for his
assistance in establishing a girl’s basketball program with
esteemed coach, Frank Smagacz.
While at Cathedral, Roger received professional honors as
the Knights of Columbus Catholic Coach of the Year (1968);
Shrine Bowl Football Game Assistant Coach (1969); Shrine Bowl
Head Coach (1973); World-Herald Coach of the Year (1972);
Metro Coach of the Year (1972); Head Coach Nebraska Coaches
Association All-Star Basketball Game (1971), to name a few.

Roger moved to Bryan High School in 1973 to continue
his teaching and coaching career. Then in the fall of 1980,
the Roncalli Catholic faculty, staff, and students welcomed
a new Athletic Director, Mr. Roger Higgins.
At Roncalli Catholic, Roger first served as Assistant
Football Coach, helping the Crimson Pride grab the state
title in 1983. Over the years, he also filled positions as
Roncalli Boys and Girls Head Track Coach, Girls Basketball
Head Coach, Biology Teacher, and Assistant Principal.
Less than ten years later, Roger retired.
A Continued Presence at Roncalli Catholic
After his retirement, Roger’s presence at Roncalli
Catholic continued as Grounds Keeper, Cross Country
Coach, and Assistant Track Coach (with his daughter, Cele).
In 2010, Roger spearheaded efforts to make the dream of a
Roncalli Catholic outdoor track a reality.
In 1982, Roger received the Omaha Sportscasters
Association Sports Award; two years before his retirement,
Cathedral High School Dedicated Teacher Award was
presented to Roger for his exceptional dedication to
educational service in the community. In 1996, Roger was
honored with the Greater Omaha Sports Service Award.
Roncalli Catholic bestowed its greatest honor to Roger for
serving the children and friends of God with the Pope John
XXIII Award at Festa 2004. Then In 2007, St. Cecilia’s
Cathedral, formerly Cathedral High School, recognized

Roger as “The Great Coach” during its annual dinner and
auction, Cathedral Comedy and Cuisine.
More Honors for an Honorable Man
In 2009, Roger was inducted into the Omaha Baseball
Oldtimers Hall of Fame. This past September, the Higgins
family accepted his induction into the Nebraska High School
Sports Hall of Fame, as they received the Fischer Family
Award on his behalf.
Former Roncalli Catholic English teacher and Assistant
Cross Country Coach, Theresa Huttmann, recalls joking that
Roger was too similar to “God,” inferring, “…he was
probably as old as God and knew everything about anything
dealing with sports!”
His Legacy Lives On in our Community
Today, the Roncalli Catholic Family celebrates the
incredible legacy that Mr. Roger Higgins began in the
community over five decades ago.
Roger’s ministry as an educator, coach, and friend truly
taught you “… how to be a man or woman; how to be a good
person; how to think…,” Kelly Higgins said.
Roger’s love of life, devotion to family, and intense work
ethic inspired students and colleagues, alike, to give more,
work harder, and never give up!
Though Roger has passed, his spirit, teachings, and
lasting memory will live on - from the bleachers to the
hallways - at Roncalli Catholic High School.

Campaign to Support Outstanding Education in the Catholic Tradition
RONCALLI CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
...
Worth fighting for!
CAMPAIGN UPDATE
As of November 2010 – Pledges amounting to $2,000,000!
Campaign Goal: $2,750,000
Roncalli Catholic’s outdoor track has seen better days.
(Photo taken in 2005.) It was Coach Roger Higgins’
dream (see pages 12 and 13) to have a new track at
Roncalli Catholic. Approximately $170,000 are still
needed for grading and installment of a new track.
In 2009, Roncalli Catholic launched a capital
campaign, “Worth Fighting For!”, in an effort to raise
important funds for tuition assistance and capital
improvements. By October 2010, Roncalli Catholic
celebrated reaching $2,000,000.
On June 21st Ms. Christina Hixson of the Lied
Foundation contributed $545,000, designated for capital
improvements, including parking lot renovation,
classroom remodeling, restroom renovation, auditorium
light board and an electronic marquee positioned on Sorensen Parkway at the entrance of Roncalli Catholic.
In addition to Ms. Hixson’s gift, the Lozier Foundation
has contributed a major ongoing annual gift for tuition
assistance. We are grateful to Ms. Hixson and the Lied
Foundation, as well as the Lozier Foundation and other major
donors, for their incredible contributions. Roncalli Catholic
continues to challenge other potential donors to join these
efforts to help us reach our campaign goal of $2,750,000.
Rummel Stadium bleachers, concession stand, press box,
stadium brick memorial, landscaping, fencing, flag poles and
other capital improvements have reached their completion
stages. The Rummel Stadium project and all its components
have been made possible through generous gifts from
alumni, friends and families of Roncalli Catholic.
Planning for a track at Roncalli Catholic High School
continues. Funds approximating $170,000 are still needed
for grading and installment.
HAPPY 80TH
BIRTHDAY!
Sue O'Brien, teacher at Roncalli
in the 1980's, celebrated her 80th
birthday on April 30 at a
celebration attended by many
former and present faculty and
staff of RCHS.

Class of 2010!
Roncalli Catholic PRIDE
December 2010
Set on Lane Two is Kristie Mullen, ’11, neon laces double-knotted
and shoes comfortably cradling her delicate feet. The 800 meters ahead
doesn’t shake her concentration. Rather, the competition in neighboring
lanes transfer a jolt of nervous energy and anticipation through her body,
as she awaits the sharp blare of the shotgun start!
Kristie, a senior at Roncalli Catholic, recalls the first time she decided
to join the track team while in 7th grade. “My favorite thing (then and
still) is competing,” she explained.
And compete she did. On May 22, 2010, in Burke Stadium, friends
and family celebrated Kristie’s All Class Gold in the 800 meter run (2:14);
Runner-up Class B in the 400 meter dash (:58); 6th overall in the 4x4;
and 6th overall in the 4x8. She also had a victorious finish in the 800
meter run during the Kansas Relays at KU, with 3rd place over all her
competitors.
The biggest challenge for Kristie is battling injuries, both major and
minor. To avoid any problems, Kristie turned in her basketball jersey
this fall and took to “winter boot camp,” conditioning and training
further for the season ahead.
“This is the first year I’ve not participated in basketball,” she said,
“but I’m serious about my future in track at a collegiate level and ready
to take on the challenges of this spring as a healthy, well trained, and
focused runner. My goal is to run my personal best times in each race
and be there to support my fellow track mates,” Kristie said.
As the 2009-2010 All-Conference Runner, Kristie remains
confident in her personal best for the upcoming season, but really
exhibits her team spirit when admitting, “With the talent we have, our
track team has the potential to win overall in our spring 2011 season.
We’re picking up some really talented freshman runners this year; and,
of course, the Duchesne girls bring a great deal of strength and skill to
the team.”
Supporters can be sure Kristie will show up at each race, prepared
with a different neon fingernail color - her “fun, superstitious quirk” and that they’ll be watching double the Mullens on the track!
“My twin sister, Katie, and I are training partners. It’s great to be
involved in track together because we help one another both
physically and mentally. We work together and are always there
supporting one another at home and on the team.”
When it comes to her upcoming college career, Kristie admits, “I’m
eager to continue running on a college track team . . . whether near or far
away, though, it’s still up in the air!”
Roncalli Catholic High School invites our community to join us
in spring 2011 to support Kristie Mullen during her senior year, and
to support the Roncalli Catholic/Duchesne Track Team. See you at
the meets!

Ted admits he is encouraged to get involved in various
projects because he has a “strong desire to see Roncalli Catholic
continue to succeed…to be one of the best high schools in
Omaha!”
He prays that his children, current students and future

All About
2010 Volunteer of the Year Theresa Dai
Service is often not glamorous and done behind the
scenes. People who have a heart to serve do so regularly and
without much fanfare. True servers say “yes” to God’s call to
service in our communities. This year we, at Roncalli
Catholic High School, are proud to congratulate Mrs.
Theresa Dai, a true servant in fulfilling God’s mission to give
of oneself, as the 2010 Volunteer of the Year!
For over three years now, Theresa has volunteered in
the Roncalli Catholic School Office twice a week, assisting
with mailings, data entry, filing and other administrative
tasks. Additionally, many hours out of Theresa’s days
were dedicated to assisting the Development Office during
the various fundraising events, such as Golf, High Tea and
Festa del Leone.
Theresa truly exemplifies dedication to Roncalli
Catholic High School through service. In leading through
service, Theresa believes in meeting all the challenges that
life has in store with a cheerful disposition and optimistic
outlook.
Theresa Dai is the wife of Keith, and mother to alum,

CULINARY ARTS: “Cuisine Art” at Its Finest
For student organizations, Culinary Arts topped the
charts in 2010 with their winning cuisines sure to make
your taste buds tingle and mouth water for more. The
Culinary Team, comprised of Aric Erdman, Corey Kitt,
Darek Jensen, Will Braesch, and Zack Dunning,
participated in the Regional ProStart Competition held
February 27th in Lincoln, Nebraska. Then on March 1st and
2nd, the Roncalli Catholic Culinary Team participated in
the Metro Culinary Competition at the newly constructed
Culinary Arts Center at Metro Community College.
Receiving participation certificates at both competitions, the
team was selected as a wildcard to attend the State ProStart
Culinary Competition in Hastings, Nebraska.
The afternoon’s competition was tight. Roncalli
Catholic triumphed above the competition, earning Third
Place in the “Best Starter-Salad,” Second Place in the “Best
of Beef Award,” and overall “Best Culinary Team.” The
team was recognized as the State Champions!
The Culinary Team continued on to attend and
participate in the National ProStart Competition in Kansas
City from April 30 to May 2.
During each regional, metro and state competition,
each student has the opportunity to perfect their art for food
preparation, sculpture and cooking, competing in
individual events, such as: fruit and vegetable carvings,
chocolate sculptures, plate presentation of a salad, tappas
or desserts (from scratch or manufactured).
Roncalli Catholic is proud to congratulate the Culinary
Team’s many recognitions and continued artistic
masterpieces to rank top for premier cuisines.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF SUCCESS
at
Roncalli Catholic
Sunday, November 7, 2010, marked the 10th Anniversary of
High Tea at Roncalli Catholic. This unique fundraising event saw a
meld of creativity, community, and delectable cuisine catered by
alum, Ted Thomsen, ’76, of Pleasure Your Palate.
Forty-eight tables adorned with artsy table
settings and wonderful accents decorated the
Rummel Gymnasium, illuminating the large area
with bountiful color and creativity.
Over 380 attendees were present for the
luncheon.
Between raffle giveaways, guests
browsed the silent auction and laughed at the
delightful musings of “Omaha’s Premier Lady of
Humor,” Mrs. Mary Maxwell (pictured). Mary’s
light take on life was also delivered at the 1st Annual
High Tea at Roncalli Catholic. Welcoming Mary back to the stage to
commemorate 10 years of success was a treat!
Roncalli Catholic High School graciously thanks all the women
present at the 10th Anniversary High Tea. The event raised over
$18,500 for the scholarship and tuition fund programs at Roncalli
Catholic. Special thanks to our Chairs, Gina Langin and Corinne
Anderson, and the High Tea Committee Members.
Roncalli Catholic’s New Website:
Serving Roncalli Catholic constituents’ needs with a clear and consistent message
In an age where cell phones and computers have become
commonplace, our methods of communication have
undergone an enormous shift. Yes, today “YOU” can “Tube”,
“Google”, “Tweet”, “Text”, “Blog”, “Bing”, “Browse”, “Skype”,
“Surf” and “Chat,” to name just a few. Within the web’s twisty
world of content and creation, emerges this complex system of
networking.
This summer the Roncalli Catholic Marketing Board met
to discuss how to best utilize this network of communication.
What followed was the design of a newly defined presence for
Roncalli Catholic High School, an updated website. As
discussed, this new website would serve Roncalli Catholic
constituents’ needs with a clear and consistent message
throughout. It would maintain an organized map of options to
explore and inform.
Marketing Board member, Shari Gilg, ’83, added, “The new
website will serve as an excellent tool for current and
prospective families to receive pertinent information on
Roncalli Catholic.”

2010 Fall Production, Seussical the Musical (photo front cover)
From November 11th to 14th, alumni friends and family enjoyed the Roncalli Catholic performance of “Seussical the Musical!”
Based on the believably fantastical and colorfully magical works of Dr. Seuss, this musical sensation captured the playful spirits of
audience members. Students traveled through the imaginative dreamlands of Dr. Seuss, in a musical adventure that celebrates
friendship, family and community. The musical was directed by Mrs. Melissa Rager, assisted by Mrs. Kim Morgan, with
accompaniment and sound by Mr. Ryan Rager.
A CHRISTMAS PRAYER
O sweet Child of Bethlehem
grant that we may share with all our hearts
in this profound mystery of Christmas.
Put into the hearts of men and women
this peace for which they sometimes seek so desperately
and which you alone can give to them.
Help them to know one another better,
and to live as brothers and sisters,
children of the same Father.
Reveal to them also your beauty, holiness, and purity.
Awaken in their hearts love and gratitude
for your infinite goodness.
Join them all together in your love.
And give us your heavenly peace. Amen
(Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) Blessed Pope John XXIII
