Thanks be to God! This month we make special efforts to express our gratitude and highlight the ministries our annual giving supports. Key dates! Sunday, October 4 – Stewardship Campaign Kickoff Sunday, Oct 11- Sunday School Sings Sunday, Oct 18 – Generosity Packets Distributed at Worship Sunday, Oct 25 – Generosity Sunday with Ministry Fair Estimate of giving and time and talent sheets receive in worship Certainly we are excited about our ministry/building expansion. Preliminary work will be completed this fall with groundbreaking in the spring. But the core of our excitement is how our congregation transforms lives through its everyday ministry of worship, education, youth and family, spiritual life and growth, and outreach. This continuing and growing ministry has our upmost focus and needs our constant support and generosity. Our giving to the building program is over and above our giving to the ongoing ministry of our congregation. And so this month, we celebrate our ministry, our transforming relationship of faith and service, and our growing support. We give thanks for how we branch out in giving Bibles to our children and tell them the story of God’s love. Then as they grow we provide youth events like Bible Camp, retreats, fun faith experiences, confirmation, TMT’s, and Peer Ministry. Through the leadership of some of our high schoolers, we have just started a “Breakfast Club” that meets once a month on Wednesday mornings for food, fellowship, and faith conversation. Our adults grow in spirit through Bible study, service opportunities, Stephen Ministry, quilting, International Meals and Justice events, Pub theology, Women of the ELCA. We will be starting a couple more small groups in the near future like “Walking and Praying”, and “Cooking with Kindness.” Plus, we are blessed to have relationships with San Juan congregation in Colombia and the Campus Ministry in Winona. We have contributed to the 15 million dollars raised to combat malaria. We give 10% of our offering to the start up of new congregations, support of Lutheran Social Service, and support for missions around the world. Our branches seek to meet the great needs beyond our sight. This will all be highlighted in a Ministry Fair on Sunday, Oct 25. We will have “booths” and displays from many of our ministries so we can learn about all we are doing and how we can branch out with our gifts and energy. Thanks be to God. Pastor Mark 5 From Karleen Continuing our series on prayer from last month and with a clearer understanding why we should pray, let’s now study “where” we are to pray. There are, for the most part, two places in which to pray—publicly or privately, praying with others or praying alone. We’ll begin with public prayer. The most visible place of public prayer is that of the Church in weekly worship. Public prayer is acceptable to God, who calls his house a “house of prayer.” (Is. 56:7) Worship is both a horizontal and vertical experience. Vertically, God builds up our faith in Word and Sacrament and we respond in praise. According to Luther, our prayers in worship flow “from the faith that is kindled or increased in the sacrament.” From a horizontal perspective, when we pray together we are more tightly knit together in community, providing mutual support and comfort to each other as members of the body of Christ. However, worship isn’t the only place of public prayer. Just as with prayer in worship, we are encouraged to participate with each other, praying in small groups, not neglecting the responsibility, but persisting in it in order to build each other up (Heb. 10:25). We do this when we pray with another believer in the hospital, or with a young mother who is struggling in her role as a parent, or in joyful celebration of a promotion at work. When we pray like this with one another we are assured that when “two or three” are gathered in God’s name, Christ has promised to be present (Mt. 18:20) and to answer such prayer (Mt. 18:19). It was this deep trust that God would respond that made Luther argue that “God must answer our prayer (if I may be so bold to put it that way) just as much as [the prayers of Moses, Joshua, and Elijah, and all the other saints], for we are members of his church, which is the bride of his beloved Son.” The other place for us to pray is privately. In the New Testament, we have many examples of Jesus engaging in private prayer (Mt. 14:23, 26:36, 39; Mk. 1:35; Lk 9:18, 29). In each instance, even if others were near, Jesus moved to a place to be alone in prayer. In Matthew 6, we are commanded that, when we engage in daily individual prayer, we are to retire to a place that is behind closed doors. (Mt. 6:6) No prayer, particularly that of individual prayer, is to be used for show, but rather for the purpose of hearing and speaking to God. Praying behind closed doors may mean different things for different people. For some, like Luther, it might mean praying in one’s room. Others may have a particular chair in which they prefer to pray. Wherever that holy place is, it is important, as Luther notes, to not “mix business and prayer,” but to pull away to a quiet place daily, like Jesus, to listen to and respond to God. Next month, we’ll continue with the “Four W’s” of prayer, focusing on the third-- “what” we should pray. 6 Executive Council Minutes September 21, 2015 The September 21 meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by President, Matt Sogla. New Business: With the departure of our Director of Youth and Family Ministry we will need to begin thinking of what staffing model would best serve our church. Some options could be to hire another Director of Youth and Family Ministry, hire an associate pastor, continue requesting an intern, and beginning to rely more on volunteers. A committee will be formed to begin to explore all options. The Education Committee is in need of assistance with their committee responsibilities. A $5,000 undesignated memorial gift was received. The Executive Council voted to apply this towards the building fund. A non-congregational member requested to use our sanctuary for a piano recital. We approved the request with a notation that we will suggest they consider a donation. Amy Goldsmith has requested use of the fellowship hall for a benefit fundraiser for someone who was severely injured in an auto accident. Her request was approved. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m. Next meeting: October 19, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted by Kathy Halvorson 8 Construction Committee 9-10-15 Construction Committee Meeting Report Pastor Mark opened the meeting with prayer. All committee members were present. Tad from Vanman Architects and Builders received the report from G-Cubed Engineering with just minor changes, including a small change in the guy wires and an OK for site set back of 22-25 ft. Elevation of property to the east, codes for handicap parking and ramps were also discussed. VAnman may bring in an electrical engineer to determine if we will be required to convert from single phase to 3 phrase electric power. We will also work with the city concerning water and sewer lines. Rick of Vanman will continue his work on the kitchen plan to include the best possibility for storage and for fitting desirable elements of St. Mary’s kitchen plan into the space we will have. It is hoped that beneficial bids made to Vanman can allow additional square footage of what is needed. Questions about development and materials for the exterior and entrance were voiced. Design and differing materials with related costs will be discussed more fully, to include information on cost to the church and builder. Tad said they would continue with conceptual drawing as they adhere to cost, itemized lists, utility needs/ hookups and possible changes, all to be attended to before starting the working drawings in early December. Vanman is suggesting that they now meet with the Construction Committee about every two weeks, with the next meeting on September 24th at 6:30. We received quotes from People’s Coop for $53,073 and Media Com fro $19,306 to relocate the electric and cable service in the alley. Relocating the gas will result in no cost to us based on depreciation voer a 40 year period. Matt Sogla signed the contracts. Bill for tree removal of $3600 was approved by the committee. Grinding of the stumps and fill will be the next step. Plans continue to the middle house to be moved and also the garage. It was approved to allow church members to pick up the old tables and chairs stored in the garage. The final hearing for the re-platting of our city block will be at the city council meeting on 9/14. Mark Johnsrud is applying for our construction loan. At present rates, a loan for $1.5 million for 20 years would result in a monthly payment of $8893. (The more pledges we receive before the loan is taken out, the lower the loan and payments will be.) A poster titled “Building Fund Pledge Meter” will be on display in the narthex and will be updated monthly. Currently about $150,00 has been received in pledges. The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer. The Committee thanks you for your prayers. The ELCA Malaria Campaign reached its financial goal of raising $15 million. Thank you! Working with our Lutheran companions and partners, malaria programming has taken place throughout 13 countries in Africa. By working together, we have brought about lasting change. Together we have had great success: Educated 2 million community members Distributed 50,000 insecticide-treated bed nets Tested 160,000 people for malaria, and if positive, provided treatment Trained 10,000 local volunteers in prevention and treatment Empowered 12,000 households to be economically stable Provided 32,000 pregnant women prevention medication. Teaching your Children Generosity, while using Simply Giving Many of you are using “Simply Giving,” a means of giving to the ministry of the church through automatic withdrawals. You have found this to be a helpful way to follow the biblical guideline to give “first-fruits.” First fruits giving means giving money to God and to other first and then living on the rest. This is a way to declare freedom from slavery to money and find joy in generosity. However, using “Simply Giving” means you don’t have use offering envelopes or have money to put in the offering plate when we have a time of response in worship. This can be especially troubling if you have children watching you. We want to model giving to our children so that they grow up with a pattern of giving firmly planted in their spirit. So here are a couple suggestions: 1) Use the laminated green leaflet in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate indicating that you give through Simply Giving 2) Use your offering envelope and write Simply Giving on the front of it 3) Probably the best idea is to bring some cash with you to worship and place that in the offering plate as an additional act of worshipful giving. This will witness most clearly to your children that you are giving to the Lord and you can share the joy that our children have in giving their “noisy offering.” 12 4:15-8 JFK 26 10-11 Bone Builders at St. Mary’s 19 10-11 Bone Builders at St. Mary’s 7:00 Exec Council 4:15-8 JFK 12 10-11 Bone Builders at St. Mary’s 4:15-8 JFK 5 10-11 Bone Builders at St. Mary’s Monday 4:15-8 JFK 6 13 27 20 4:15-8 JFK 7:00 Internship Committee 9:00 Esther Circle 4:15-8 JFK All Committee 5:30 Property 6:00 Stewardship 6:00 Education 6:30 Worship 7:15 Spiritual Life 7:15 Bus.
