MARCH/APRIL 2016 AT THE P!NK PALACE
A Once and Future Planetarium
By Dave Maness, Sharpe Planetarium Manager
Shortly after I arrived in Memphis to start my job working
for the City of Memphis, the Pink Palace Museum, and for
all the residents and tourists who visit, there was talk about
technological improvements. Through the leadership of Director
of Museums Steve Pike, it soon became more than just talk.
Talk led to fundraising successes that ultimately gave us the
opportunity to do some real planning.
A good plan starts with challenging but achievable goals and
objectives. We wanted to create the most advanced, capable
and state of the art science-education theater that our fine city
had ever seen. We looked at the current state of the Sharpe
Planetarium. The (then) current planetarium was operating with
equipment installed in 1978. The Minolta Series 4 (sometimes
referred to as a model 1015) projector was over 36 years
old! The manufacturer had long before merged with former
competitor Konica, to become Konica Minolta. Eventually,
Konica Minolta ended technical support for older equipment
such as our star projector. Still we limped along, getting support
from Ash Enterprises and Eastern Control Systems to keep
essential functions operating.
Soon we noticed some problems. Strange things were
happening in our simulated sky. Constellations were changing
shape due to star cell migration caused by repeated heating
and cooling from the hot primary star lamps. Bright “stars”
appeared where fuzzy nebulas once shown. We traced this to
the loss of filters that had fallen off the precision star plates and
then were lost. Some bright stars vanished altogether as lamps
were no longer available. Those had to be replaced by less
than ideal alternatives. Replacement (filament style) lamps were
becoming more expensive and harder to find. Belts slipped,
gears locked up, and sometimes they even chomped on wires
that carried power to certain functions. If that weren’t enough
to convince anyone a change was needed, the sound system
buzzed, the houselights projected pink instead of blue skies,
and the noise of over 70 projectors in their choreographed reset
dance after every show was deafening. “The writing was on the
wall.” We needed to upgrade!
As much as we still loved that iconic old star projector which
resembled a mechanical insect standing in the center of the
room, newer digital systems have none of its problems. Except
for a fan, there are no moving parts. The new systems use as
few as one lamp! And since they project an image based on
a 3 dimensional database, they are far more accurate. To top
it off, they are immeasurably more flexible. The old projector
limited our point of view to Planet Earth. As rocket technology
matures and improves, we humans begin to see ourselves as
residents of the solar system and beyond. Digital projectors
permit us to visualize our dreams of space travel. With such a
system we can now inspire students and others by simulating
journeys from our home planet to virtually anywhere in the
known universe. The largest city in the State of Tennessee
certainly deserves as much.
And so, a few years ago with the cooperation of the City of
Memphis, Memphis Museums, Inc., and our generous donor
AutoZone, we set the ball rolling with the hiring of the Memphis
architectural firm of Askew, Nixon, Ferguson. After many
meetings and much research, careful plans were drawn up.
The physical work on the project began September 15, 2014.
After 16 months of work (including time to recover from an
unfortunate fire), we have built something special. We have
a new dome with the largest projection surface in Western
Tennessee, new seating for 145, new colorful and customizable
LED houselights, a new digital Konica Minolta Super Media
Globe 2 projector, and a new Cinema Standard sound system.
We hope you are as proud of the results as we are.
Welcome to the AutoZone Dome
at the Sharpe Planetarium!

Now Showing at the AutoZone Dome at the Sharpe Planetarium:
Firefall
Throughout Earth’s violent history, impacts from comets and
asteroids have mercilessly shaped its surface.
This ceaseless firefall is our only tangible connection to the
universe beyond and is an ever-present reminder of our own
humble beginnings in the hostile environment of space.
Seasonal Stargazing
Find out more about “what’s up tonight” in just a few
minutes than some people do in a lifetime! Hop through
constellations, learn cool star names, and groove to
planetarium space music.
Astronaut
The exploration of space is the greatest endeavour that
humankind has ever undertaken. What does it take to be
part of this incredible journey? What does it take to become
an astronaut?
One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure
Follow Sesame Street's Big Bird and Elmo as they explore
the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu, a Muppet from Zhima Jie, the
Chinese co-production of Sesame Street. Together, they take
an imaginary trip from Sesame Street to the moon, where
they discover how different it is from Earth.

CTI 3D GIANT THEATER
National Parks Adventure 3D
Opens March 5, 2016
Narrated by Academy Award® winner Robert Redford, National
Parks Adventure 3D will take you on the ultimate off-trail
adventure into the nation’s awe-inspiring great outdoors and
untamed wilderness. Soar over red rock canyons, hurtle up
craggy mountain peaks and into other-worldly realms found
within America’s most legendary outdoor playgrounds, including
Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Yosemite, and Arches.
Fun Facts:
• Cadillac Mountain in Acadia is the tallest point along the
east coast of the US and at times is the first place to see
sunrise.
• The Everglades is the only place on Earth where alligators
and crocodiles co-exist!
• Many fossils are found the in Grand Canyon, but none
are dinosaurs. Why? The rocks are older than the oldest
dinosaur!
• Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore surrounds Lake Superior,
the coldest and deepest of all of the Great Lakes and the
largest freshwater lake in the world!
• In Yellowstone, thermal pools and limestone deposits get
their color from thermophiles, or heat loving organisms!
Thermophiles produce many of the colors, textures, and
smells you experience in Yellowstone National Park.
• Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park is filled with
Giant Sequoia Trees that can reach up to 280 feet tall and
can live to be 3,500 years old! These giant sequoias inspired
poet John Muir and President Teddy Roosevelt to protect
Yosemite Valley.

The CTI 3D Giant Theater is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. At present,
we have a total of 27 assistive listening devices. Nine of these devices (Captiview) provide
closed captions. We also have 18 devices that enhance the volume for those visitors with
hearing issues and those devices are also designed to provide a descriptive narrative of on
screen actions on an additional audio channel. At the present, not all of the documentary
movies we have shown in the theater have been digitally encoded by the documentary
movie distributor with the necessary codes for the Captiview closed caption device and the
DoReMi descriptive narrative capabilities. We have been informed that in the near future
more documentary movies are being encoded with closed caption viewer Captiview and
the DoReMi descriptive narrative features. The theater provides hearing impaired customers
with a copy of the movie’s script with a red flashlight, for low light level reading. Customers
in need of these devices should call our reservations number, (901)636-2362, so that we
can make appropriate accommodations to serve their needs.

DIRECTOR'S DISPATCH
Color Me Embarrassed … and very Proud!
I try not to use clichés, but as I read the contents of this
issue that phrase, “an embarrassment of riches,” leapt to
mind.
There is amazing new technology lighting up our
AutoZone Dome at the Sharpe Planetarium with shows
like Firefall and Astronaut. We have Robert Redford
narrating our big screen feature, National Parks
Adventure 3D. We have other educational movies such as
Journey to Space 3D along with Hollywood favorites Toy
Story 1, 2, and 3 and the Wizard of Oz … a world class
exhibit, Nature Unleashed; another great exhibit showing
off the African-American artifacts we have acquired
through a generous grant from the Assisi Foundation of
Memphis, Inc.; the Volunteer Plant Sale at Lichterman
Nature Center, April 15 and 16; and our annual
Members Day at Coon Creek, April 30.
There is a restaurant in town I really like, but seldom go
to. The menu has too many choices. It’s an embarrassment
of riches, and I can’t decide what to order. Please don’t
let that sort of thing keep you away from all our museum
family has to offer.
And remember, Spring Break is here. You’ll be looking
for fun things to entertain kids and grandkids, and we
have … well, you know the cliché.

Have you ever been to a national park? Closer to home, we
have Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, Hot Springs in Arkansas,
and of course, the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.
What wonderful vacation destinations!
In our new Giant Theater documentary, National Parks
Adventure 3D, Robert Redford leads us on a 40-minute
“vacation” to nature’s most beautiful locations – stunning,
jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring locations.
Perhaps you’ve been to some; perhaps you intend to go
someday. But until then, come sit in our comfortable theater
seats, gnosh on popcorn and slurp a soft drink, and let us
take you on a whirl-wind adventure!
