LSSI’s 2004 Annual Report—“In Human Terms”—juxtaposes some statistics reflecting the numbers of people LSSI served last year with what those numbers mean on a deeper level. The truth is, reporting on numbers and statistics can be meaningless and uninteresting unless those numbers are put in some context that people can connect with on an emotional level. While statistics can be impressive, the impact of service must be measured in human terms. Thinking about the number of people we serve at LSSI caused me to reflect on the cumulative impact of our interactions with people on a day-to-day basis, whether in our personal or professional lives. When our work is carried out with love—by attending to those we serve with love—the impact of our interactions is multiplied. Likewise, one loving exchange or action can change someone's life. It is not an overstatement to suggest that love and compassion have an exponential power. So, as you look at this annual report, I ask you not to just look at the numbers of people served by LSSI, significant though they may be. Look at some of the people we have served and how our interaction in their lives has been part of their finding some form of healing, some measure of justice, some level of wholeness. How has LSSI’s presence been embodied in human terms? What you see in these pages will give you a taste of LSSI’s impact in our clients’ lives. Each number has behind it often hundreds of interactions, hopefully many of which were done from and with love. By extension, I hope that you will also recognize your impact as a donor, volunteer or staff person. That is, the impact of your love! As a social ministry organization of the three Illinois synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, LSSI seeks to carry out Christ’s command that we love one another and so fulfill the gospel. When we live and work in love, amazing things are possible. Thank you for your partnership in bringing healing, justice and wholeness to people and communities—for helping us make a difference, in human terms. Frederick Aigner, Pastor President Lutheran Social Services of Illinois 396 [words to convey our thanks for your partnership in serving] 2004 LSSI Annual Report ✼✼✼1 LSSI’s Visits to Mom/Visits to Dad volunteers drove 17,000 miles (more than halfway around the world!) to prison with children last year, or 85 individual trips averaging 200 miles each. That number doesn’t even include trips made by the tour buses that also take families to Illinois prisons to visit their loved ones twice a month. Every year, about 1,000 They drove more than halfway around the world last year. children (like the little girl on the right) are driven to see their mothers, thanks to volunteers who, on a regular basis, dedicate their time, wheels and caring hearts to help 17,000 [miles] keep families connected. “My granddaughter is getting older and always crying about her mother,” says Beatrice, who is caring for her incarcerated daughter’s children. “The only way I have to get her there [to see her mom] is this wonderful program that gives me and my family transportation to visit. It helps a whole lot. …The kids say ‘Can we keep going to see our mother until she comes home?’” “These are really remarkable volunteers,” says Sister Pat Davis, associate executive director of Prisoner and Family Ministry. “It touches you to see how excited the kids are. None of this would be possible without these volunteers.” 2✼ In Human Terms ✼ ✼✼ 2004 LSSI Annual Report ✼ 3 4 ✼ In Human Terms Children need to “read” about 1,000 storybooks before first grade to become good readers later. Books can be found in all of the play areas throughout every classroom at LSSI’s six Head Start sites in Chicago neighborhoods including CabriniGreen, Englewood, Humboldt Park, North Austin, Rogers Park and Uptown. As they gather for “circle” time, children are read two to six books daily—books like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Babushka’s Doll, Abuela, Abiyoyo, and 4 books x 15 classrooms x 248 school days = Mama, Do You Love Me? “Preschoolers don’t learn in a vacuum; play is their dress rehearsal for learning,” says Program Director Diana Brown, who helps supervise LSSI’s Head Start sites, explaining that children begin to make the 14,880 [books read annually at LSSI’s Head Start Centers] connection between the spoken and written word early, especially when exposed to rhyming books and songs. “Children’s exposure to new words and connected discovery experiences feeds their creative imagination and helps them make sense of the world,” explains Brown. “Their experiences, field trips and ongoing opportunities to listen to storybooks enhance their language development.” 2004 LSSI Annual Report ✼✼✼5 Last year, 5,071 people came through LSSI’s doors for substance abuse treatment —whether to an inpatient program, detox, a halfway house or outpatient treatment. Kathy Dwyer, associate executive director of Behavioral Health Services, who helps oversee 17 LSSI substance abuse treatment programs, says that for each of those people who have sought help, treatment has touched three to four people in their lives as well, or another 17,748 people. 22,819 [people touched by substance abuse treatment] Recovery is not just for people who abuse or are addicted to drugs and alcohol—recovery is also for their families. While a person with an addiction needs help, his or her family needs help just as much. LSSI offers significant opportunities to families for education and information that will move them, along with their loved ones, in a new direction toward health and lasting change. Don (far right) came to the LSSI’s Men’s Residence North, a halfway house in Rogers Park, Chicago, in June 2004. A father and grandfather, a significant part of Don’s recovery has been repairing relationships with members of his family. “I was like a hurricane going through their lives, leaving a path of destruction,” Don says. “We’re getting back together, getting closer. …I can never thank this program enough. Lord knows where I would have been if I hadn't 6✼ In Human Terms ✼ ✼✼ been here.” 2004 LSSI Annual Report ✼ 7 8 ✼ In Human Terms Maggy Raby says the families who use LSSI’s Intouch Services “feel quite comfortable that things are going to be taken care of for their mom or dad.” Raby, who manages LSSI’s Intouch Services in Rockford, explains,“I think one of the things that has been an absolute asset to the community is our providing services that allow seniors to stay in their own homes.” Last year, 320 LSSI home care assistants provided 300,000 hours of service to elderly clients and their families in cities including Chicago, Peoria and Rockford and the surrounding areas. Whether it be housekeeping, assisting with personal care or providing transportation to medical appointments or to visit a relative, LSSI home care assistants provide a long list of essential non-medical care. Home care assistants provide companionship to their 300,000 [hours of companionship and help] elderly clients and help families with the sometimes heavy burden of caregiving. “You do whatever you can to make clients feel comfortable, safe and happy,” Raby explains. Roger Lundstrom’s father, Ed, 94 (both at left), lives at LSSI’s Peterson Meadows. Pleased with the care Ed receives from Kim, his home care assistant who works with him eight hours each day, Roger says,“[home care assistants] need to be personable. If you are that way, you're not going to just park in a chair. You’re going to interact and be a caregiver.” 2004 LSSI Annual Report ✼✼✼9 Last year, 580 children found permanency with the help of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI). Of this group, 231 children were reunited with their families and 288 children in foster care were adopted. LSSI also facilitated 61 agency adoptions, which included 33 children who were adopted internationally. “Thanks to our incredibly dedicated staff and the efforts of all of the families involved, we have a fairly large number of children in foster care who went home to their moms and 580 [children have secure, stable and permanent homes] dads,” notes John Schnier, executive director of LSSI’s Children’s Community Services.“It shows that we're doing our job.” Since its founding in 1867, LSSI has committed itself to bring healing, justice and wholeness to children. That promise includes providing each child with a safe, secure and loving place to grow and thrive. Over the years, LSSI has been instrumental in helping thousands of children find permanent homes and caring families. Children who have achieved permanency—whether through adoption or reunification—tend to have more promising futures and opportunities to develop into healthy and productive people. 10✼ In Human Terms ✼ ✼✼ 2004 LSSI Annual Report ✼ 11 12 ✼ In Human Terms Residents of Washington Place, Beardstown, and Dixon Group Home, Dixon—group homes for adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome—lost 120 pounds in 2004. During the last five years, these individuals have lost an amazing 841 pounds, total. Prader-Willi is a rare chromosomal disorder that causes a chronic feeling of hunger, some borderline mental retardation and obesity. LSSI’s group homes give people with PraderWilli a structured living environment that enables them to lose weight, maintain their health and live as independently as possible. LSSI is the only human service agency in the state of Illinois that offers group homes for people with Prader-Willi. LSSI also offers other services for children and adults with developmental disabilities, providing residential care in a variety of settings in 841 [pounds lost in five years] Chicago, Homer Glen and Sterling. “I like the residents, and I like my room [and the] good staff—they treat us right,” says Jerry Ingram, 48, a resident of Washington Place (at left). Jerry has lost 148 pounds since moving to the group home in 1991. “My favorite thing is going out in the community,” he says, adding,“I like to go to church and watch movies—oh, yeah, [movies with] Roy Rogers. I got his picture up in my room. He’s my TV star.” 2004 LSSI Annual Report 13 ✼ ✼✼ 328 DEDICATED LEADERS LSSI’s Board of Directors, Senior Management Team,The Cornerstone Foundation,The Women’s Network and Advancement Councils Board of Directors CHAIRPERSON David M. Dr. Charles Infelt, pastor of Holy Family Lutheran Church and cofounder of Holy Family Ministries, at its 23rd Annual Amicus Certus (True Friend) Dinner Dance on November 6, 2004. Every year, LSSI gives the Amicus Certus award to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the human community. Shown with Dr. Nelson and Pr. Infelt were (from left) Nancy Nagel, president, LSSI Women’s Network; the Rev. Dr. Frederick Aigner, president, LSSI; and (far right) Darlene Jones, Amicus Certus chairperson. “Mary Nelson and Chuck Infelt represent two of the finest examples of faith-based community organizing that I am aware of in all of America, not just our Lutheran Church or even the state of Illinois,” says Pr. Aigner. “They are tough and savvy, compassionate, persistent in pursuit of issues, connections and dollars to enable the transformation of their respective communities in West Garfield Park and Cabrini-Green.” Hosted by the Women’s Network of LSSI, Amicus Certus raised for more than LSSI programs. $70,000 in net proceeds 2004 LSSI Annual Report ✼ 19 Mr. & Mrs. Alan Swanson Mr. & Mrs. Richard Tabatt Mr. & Mrs. Robert Teiken Richard Testa Mr. & Mrs. Robert Tonos Dr. & Mrs. Robert Toon Sylvie Torkelson Mr. & Mrs. Earl Trostrud, Jr. Dorothy Turner Michael Nott and Dawn Upshaw Mr. & Mrs. John Van Duzer, Jr. Mr. & Mrs. Robert Van Osdol Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Veal Mr. & Mrs. Peter J.
