WINTER 2015
A Message from our President
Update from our 1st Vice President

By Alisa Adams, PTA 1st Vice President
Hello FishHawk Families!
I trust everyone had a wonderful holiday break! I
know I enjoyed spending time with my family and
friends. Now we are diving into our second half of the
school year and if it’s anything like the first half…it, too, will go by very
quickly!
Since our last newsletter, the PTA has been involved in many programs
that many of you have attended and enjoyed! First, our Falcon Festival
was a huge success! Our teachers who participated received $178 each to
help provide supplies for their classroom. Thank you to our Homeroom
Parents coordinating the Auction Baskets. They looked beautiful! What
a fantastic participation from our parents who donated items. Our
FishHawk Creek Teachers are so grateful for all the hard work!
Second, the Tri-school Concert was the perfect way to welcome in the
holidays! The beautiful music from our wonderful chorus joined by
Bevis’ and Stowers’ choruses in the finale song! Thank you to Mr.
Guajardo for all of his hard work in making the evening special. Third,
our school supported the “Stand for the Silent” program that was hosted
by the Newsome PTSA. Although it was at Newsome High School, the
program is based on a child who was bullied as a 5th grader. Several 5th
graders attended from our school, as well as, Bevis and Stowers.
Fourth, our Holiday Shop was another heartwarming program that
provided Oak Park Elementary with money to purchase supplies and
clothes for their Title 1 school students. Within our school, what an
opportunity to teach our children about giving! Thank you for all the
parents who helped the children. The younger grades needed more help
and so I appreciate those teachers who asked their parents to help during
their visit.
Lastly, our Minute To Win It game night sponsored by the 5th Grade
Committee. What a great way to see our favorite teachers in a different
way…cookies on their faces, slinky attached to their foreheads, sorting
skittles, and working as a team to knock over soda cans or bounce a wad
of paper into a trash can! Thank you teachers for the competitive, fun,
and very humorous evening! Whew!!!!
Spinning around to the second half will be our Super Hero Bash, Skate
Night, Grounds Beautification, and Field Day! We look forward to these great
programs! Watch for information on these upcoming events!
Although our school year isn’t over, we are in the beginning stages of our PTA
Elections for FHC Executive Committee for 2015-2016. Also, we will be looking
for people to serve on the Board. Please think about how you would like to be
involved next year. You may contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you Falcon Families for your endless support and enthusiasm!

We have had a very busy last several months and I wanted to give you a
report:
Falcon Festival was very successful. We had our most ever raised from
the auction baskets. Thank you to everyone who donated towards the
baskets and our homeroom moms who were so creative and assembled
the baskets. Falcon Festival raised $10,324. Each of the 58 teachers/staff
who worked shifts at the Falcon Festival received $178 to use towards
classroom needs. Thank you for supporting the Falcon Festival through
your donations of goods and time! It is an event that everyone looks
forward to every year.
The Holiday Shop was also a big success. The total income for the week
was $14,920; amazing to me considering all of the $.25 and $.50 items
sold. Allowing your children to do their holiday shopping that week
helped the PTA in our efforts to support a Title I school. We were able to
provide Oak Park Elementary with a check for $2,095.00. They were so
very thankful. In addition, we were able to provide each student with a
small gift and some donated uniform clothing as well (their uniform
colors are the same as ours). A special thank you to the parents and
students who went to Oak Park to deliver those items - it was a great
experience for all those involved.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
The PTA is so proud to recognize the following members who successfully headed two of our events - Kristin
McPherson for the BattyGram in November and Amy Sanchez Latimer for the Holiday Shop in December.
NOVEMBER
Meet Kristin McPherson, our
BattyGram Committee Chairperson.
This is our third year at Fishhawk
Creek. We moved here after living in
Charlotte, NC for 10 years. I have 2
daughters in Fishhawk Creek, Addyson
is in 5th grade and Kennedy is in 1st grade . I spent
several years working in Pharmaceutical Sales and
since moving to Florida, have been a stay at home
mom. I enjoy cheering my daughters on at gymnastics
and cheer, crafts and playing with our 7 year old
labradoodle Bailey.
DECEMBER
Meet Amy Sanchez Latimer, the
Holiday Shop Committee Chairperson.
Married to my wonderful husband
Patrick. We have 3 boys. Zach (12) is at
Randall, Joshua (10) and Luke (7) are at
FHC Elementary and we LOVE It!!!
I lived in Brandon my entire life, we moved out to
Apollo Beach for 8 years to be on the water, and we
moved to FishHawk 3 years ago for the exceptional
schools. We are so fortunate to be a part of this
community and we plan on staying in FishHawk
forever :-) I graduated from Brandon HS and received
a degree in Psychology at USF. In our free time we
like to go boating, fishing, snorkeling and diving in the
Florida Keys.

NEWS FROM THE NEST

By Melissa Haddad, 5th Grade Committee Chairperson

BE ON A LOOKOUT… An information sheet will be sent home with an explanation of fees and end-of-year activities.
PLEASE consider helping out with our next big fundraiser in support of the end-of-the-year activities being planned for our 5th graders. The
SUPER HERO BASH will be held on Friday, March 20th, 2015. We need lots of people to help with the planning and decorating for this event
AND we also need volunteers for both sessions the night of the event.
There are other ways to help! You or someone you know can SPONSOR one of the big events planned for the year: The Super Hero Bash
(Mar 20, 2015) or the End-of-the-Year Banquet (Jun 4, 2015).
For information on all 5th grade events and to sign up, please contact Melissa Haddad. THANK YOU!
THANK YOU to Mrs. Bush and the entire FHC staff for helping make our ‘Minute To Win It’ game night a success!! The kids and parents
in attendance experienced a wonderful evening of entertainment as they watched some of their favorite teachers take on some big challenges!
Congratulations to Team ‘Uptown Funk’ with Mrs. Frigo and Mrs. Lineberger---our new 2015 Minute To Win It Champions!!!
Celebrate the Season Art Exhibit
By Patricia Bunk, M.Ed.
“Celebrate The Season Art Exhibit” was so well supported by
the FishHawk community that I wanted to thank 1,260 people that
attended this year.
Art is truly in the heart of life. It interconnects Math, Reading,
Vocabulary , Writing , Science as well as Art History. We learn so
many interconnections that help children develop higher order
thinking skills. This year I interconnected Visual Art with
Kandinski and Geometric Shapes.
Special thanks goes to Maria Fentress as she supported me
throughout this exhibit. She is an outstanding mother and home
room mom.
Happy New Year as we experience new and creative ways to
teach students the skills they need to be critical thinkers. Instead
of simply memorizing facts and ideas, children engage in higher
levels of thinking through creativity to reach their fullest potential.
Alisa Adams, Continued from page 1
And an update on our "one-time" donation campaign. To date, we
have raised $25,187.00 - that is more than we raised doing our
traditional fundraiser, Boosterthon, last year...and every single cent
raised goes directly back to the school. Thank you to those of you who
have already contributed to the campaign. Parents seem very pleased
with the 'one time, get it done' approach. If you have not yet
contributed, please consider doing so. The suggested amount is $30/
child or $60/family. Additional donation forms are available in the front
office.
The school electronic marquee is up and running and we couldn't be
more excited. Would you like to use the school marquee to wish your
child a Happy Birthday? For $5 you can send your child a birthday
'shout-out." Forms are available in the front office and need to be
turned in one week prior to the day you would like your 'shout-out' to
run.
Thank you again for your support. FishHawk parents and friends are
the backbone to our “Falcon Family." We appreciate all you do to
support the PTA.
See you in the halls!

Principal’s Corner
Dear Falcon Families,
Report cards were distributed to all elementary students in Hillsborough County on Monday, February 2nd. Our Spring Conference Night will
be held on Thursday March 5th from 3:30 - 8:30 p.m. If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress now, please contact your
child's teacher to schedule a conference sooner.
The Grade 4 NAEP Assessment will be administered to 40 randomly selected fourth grade students in our school on Thursday, February 5th.
Selected students will be assessed in mathematics, reading, or science. Parents of all fourth grade students received a letter on December 5, 2014
to inform you that our school had been chosen to participate in the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the
Nation's Report Card. NAEP is the only ongoing national assessment of what our country's children have learned in their classes. If your child
was randomly selected to take NAEP, you would have received another letter on Friday, January 30th.
Students' Day at the Fair - Please note that students do not attend school on Friday, February 6th. The good news is that your child was given
one free admission ticket if you choose to go to the fair on Friday Feb. 6th. We were given the exact number of tickets for the number of students
who are currently enrolled at FishHawk Creek Elem. We will not have any extra tickets on hand so please place your child's ticket in a safe place.
Please take a moment to read the "new" student entrance guidelines for Student Fair Day, Feb. 6th, which have been printed on the back of each
ticket. For those families who have children in Grades 6 -12, the back of the ticket lets you know the following: "Students in Grades 6 - 12 must
present valid Hllsborough County School issued Student Photo ID or equivalent as determined by Florida State Fair officials. for admission entry
after 6:00 p.m., students must be accompanied by an adult, presenting Government issued photo ID, who is at least 21 years of age." We will be
showing all students a video highlighting these changes prior to Feb. 6th.
Lunchroom Aide - FishHawk Creek has an immediate opening for a lunchroom aide. This is a 3 1/2 hour position with the hours of 10 a.m.
until 1:30 p.m. daily. The starting pay is $8.05 per hour. (Please note this rate is a correction from what was published in the Falcon Gazette). If
interested, please complete an online employment application for the School District of Hillsborough County. In addition, please call Mrs. Sandra
Yung, our Lunchroom Manager at 651-2150 to set up an interview.
The 2015 Hillsborough Regional Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Fair will hold the awards ceremony this Thursday,
Feb. 5th at the Tampa Convention Center. This event is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Thurs. Feb. 5th. The Elementary (K 5) Awards Ceremony will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Secondary (6 -12) Awards Ceremony is 8:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
The Community Discipline Chat for Area V Schools - will be held on Wednesday, February 25th, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Bloomingdale High
School located at 1700 E. Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico. We will share school discipline date for the District and Area 5 followed by a breakout
session on our school's discipline data. We hope to see you on February 25th.
Thanking you in advance for your support and involvement in your child's education!
Educationally yours,
Pam Bush
