Summer Issue Volume 11, Issue 3 The Official Magazine of the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association BEAVERDALE Hi Neighbors, NEIGHBORHOOD It seems like we talk about it every year, but ASSOCIATION the summer is certainly the busiest time of our BOARD OF DIRECTORS President: Sean Bagniewski Vice President: Kirsten Bosch Secretary: Mike McCarthy Treasurer: Will Morris Kimberley Boggus Kevin Geiken Cece Ibson Kristi Little Debra Prentice Sam Reno Stephenie Tiedens BOARD MEETINGS Upcoming meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on May 5, Jun. 2, Jul. 7, and Aug. 4. at Calvin Community. Please refer to our website at www.beaverdale.org for more information. Board minutes are published on the website upon Board approval. MISSION The Beaverdale Neighborhood Association is neighbors working together to promote the social welfare of the Beaverdale area by bringing about civic betterment and social improvements for the common good and general welfare of the community. MEMBERSHIP The BNA is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Membership is open to the public, may be tax deductible and could be eligible for a matching gift from your employer. To join or get involved, visit www.beaverdale.org. THE SIDEWALK The Sidewalk is published quarterly by the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association P.O. Box 30175, Des Moines, Iowa 50310 Email: [email protected] Web: www.beaverdale.org year in Beaverdale and this season was particularly successful. Our SCRUB Day in May unloaded tons of trash from the cars of hundreds of neighbors. In one morning, we helped clean out garages, attics, basements, and yards that otherwise might be a blight to our beautiful neighborhood. 2016 frequently get asked how much tax money we get from the city every year. I also get asked how many paid staff we have. We actually rely on memberships, donations, and volunteers. I add that not to get more memberships and donations (although we won't turn that away), but just to remind everyone that all of our activities and events are 100% run by volunteers and usually on a shoestring. With that in mind, please be sure to thank our volunteers when you see them at events and, even better, feel free THE BNA OPERATES SOLELY ON THE HARD WORK OF VOLUNTEERS, DONATIONS, AND MEMBERSHIP DUES. WE DON'T RECEIVE TAX DOLLARS OR OPERATING FUNDS FROM THE CITY, AND HAVE NO PAID STAFF MEMBERS. WE COUNT ON THE KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY OF OUR NEIGHBORS! JOIN US IN PLANNING BEAVERDALE'S YEAR-LONG 2017 CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION! We followed it up with our Grass Seats Cinema in June. More than 350 neighbors joined us to watch "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." I had several people ask me how Beaverdale landed what is probably the most coveted movie from our Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department. I think a lot of it had to do with what we always do - we asked the neighbors for their opinion on the issue. The dozens of neighbors who voted for this movie on Facebook made it a slam dunk decision for the city. We also hosted the biggest Beaverdale Bluegrass Festival yet. As a joint concert with our partners in the Beaverdale Betterment Coalition, we were amazed at the hundreds of neighbors who joined us from all around the city. The food trucks were a hit. The new, bigger location at Tower Park was a hit. And the four musical acts were certainly a hit. The event could not have happened without support from the Polk County Board of Supervisors and, in particular, our Supervisor Angela Connolly. Please be sure to thank them next time you see any of them. A lot of people wonder how we do all this. I to volunteer yourself. In Beaverdale, there's always more than enough work to go around. All of these events and more will take on an added dimension next year. As you may have heard, it will be our 100th year since the neighborhood meeting in 1917 that created Beaverdale as we know it. In recognition of this, we've created a Centennial Commission to start planning for the festivities. We've met once and discussed a public art piece, specific branding, a major event, and many other ideas. If you'd like to be involved in the planning process, we'd love to have you join us. If there's ever anything your Beaverdale Neighborhood Association can do for you, don't hesitate to let me know at [email protected] or 515-556-9111. Sean Bagniewski, BNA President Page 2 Summer Issue Vol. 11, Issue 3 FIRST EVER BEAVERDALE TOUR OF HOMES A BIG SUCCESS! 7 HOMES, 485 ATTENDEES, AND LOTS OF BEAVERDALE PRIDE On June 11th, seven Beaverdale families generously opened their residences to the public in the first BNA-sponsored Tour of Homes event. These homes ranged in style from a 1½-story stone Tudor, to several Craftsman-style variants, a 2-story English Colonial, an Italian Renaissance-inspired home, and a kitschy Mid-century Modern ranch. Each home reflected the diverse tastes and experiences of its respective homeowners. It was a truly special opportunity to explore some beautiful and fascinating homes; guests picked up a number of renovation and design ideas as well. Despite a 105-degree heat index, over 485 people attended the Tour of Homes event. Visitors came from all over Des Moines, Ankeny, the western suburbs, and even some from rural Iowa. Because of the great turnout, the BNA plans to host this event again in June, 2018, with an all new slate of houses. Anyone interested in putting his/her home on the tour, or helping to plan the event, should contact Sasha Kamper by phone at 515-279-0410 or email at [email protected]. She will reach out at a later date, once planning for the second Beaverdale Tour of Homes begins in earnest. The BNA wishes to thank the homeowners for HOMEOWNERS AMANDA NAGLE, CENTURY 21 SRE sharing their wonderful JIM & SUSAN FORD houses with our community. DENNIS & SHIRLEY HURLEY Thanks also to the CECE IBSON & WENDELL ECK planning committee members SARAH KOURI & BRAD DAVIS and volunteers who worked to WILL MORRIS & TRACY FRENCH make this event a success. MOLLY SCHOTT The BNA also enjoyed VICKIE SHIPLEY great support from Beaverdale businesses who stepped-up to sell tickets, hang promotional banners, and provide event sponsorships. A special thank you goes to our financial sponsors listed here and to Boesen the Florist, for EVENT CO-SPONSORS donating floral arrangements AMANDA NAGLE, CENTURY 21 SRE to each of the participating IOWA REALTY, BEAVERDALE OFFICE GREEN FAMILY FLOORING homeowners, and surprising all BOESEN THE FLORIST of our attendees with a ½-dozen BACK COUNTRY OUTFITTERS free roses, in exchange for their paid event tickets! Speaking of flowers . . . mark your calendars for June, 2017, when the BNA Beautification Committee will host its next BNA Garden Walk. If you have interest in showcasing your garden on the tour, contact Nancy Dunbar for more information (dunbar. [email protected]). Going forward, the BNA plans to alternate the Garden Walk and Tour of Homes events, with each event occurring every-other year. 2016 The Official Magazine of the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association Page BEAVERDALE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL A HUGE HIT! 1500+ PEOPLE ENJOYED THE FESTIVITIES Over 1500 revelers enjoyed a balmy evening of bluegrass and soul music in Tower Park on Saturday, July 23rd. The BNA and BBC collaborated to produce the third annual Beaverdale Bluegrass Festival, a free event that featured music by regional acts Sans Souci and Bassel and the Supernaturals, as well as Des Moines bands The Maytags and Mr. Baber's Neighbors. The historic water tower was beautifully lit for the occasion, and the undulating topography of the northeast corner of the park created a natural amphitheater that was a perfect setting for the large, buoyant crowd. The event was put on with the generous support of Polk County, as well as business sponsors Davis Insurance and Progressive Insurance, Meylor Chiropractic, AIM Kitchen & Bath, Green Family Flooring, Chef's Kitchen, the Better Business Bureau, Christopher's, Back Country, and Cooney's Tavern. The Des Moines Parks & Rec Board and Des Moines Water Works were indispensable to the organizing of the event. Dozens of volunteers pitched in selling beer, hanging banners, and hauling trash to make the event a success. We would like to thank all of the volunteers and businesses, as well as all of the attendees, for making this event a huge success. We have a lot of fun, food and music for your weekend enjoyment. Everyone can start now and cross their fingers for no rain so this year we can have the car rally we missed out on last year. The children’s games were so popular that we’ve expanded the time this year so they can enjoy all the activities we have in store for them. Be sure to be along the Parade route so you can show your appreciation to our Grand Marshal, Angela Connolly. She has done so much to help us put this Festival on year after year. And don’t forget the bands playing at several locations both nights, joined by the open mic and teen dance on Saturday. Add to all this the carnival, vendors, both food and nonfood, and you know you must be there. So join us for the best – and only – neighborhood Festival! IS YOUR BNA MEMBERSHIP CURRENT? Owner Alice Meyer, who opened Beaverdale Books on July 8, 2006, has weathered a challenging economy, the introduction of e-books, two summers with major street detours, and the ever-changing buying habits of readers. A long standing BNA Business member, she has also been generous in helping the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association by facilitating orders for our Beaverdale branded clothing, accessories, and yard/garden signs, as well participating in the annual Beaverdale Holiday Shop Hop as a Santa Stop and offering entertainment and activities during other Beaverdale events like Fall Festival. Beyond Beaverdale, Alice has also been active in the world of books; she recently completed a 3-year term on the Advisory Council for the Iowa Center for the Book and is currently on the Des Moines Public Library's AViD Selection Committee. Beaverdale Books isn't just a staple business in our neighborhood, but also supports the local and state-wide writing community. As a member of the American Booksellers Association and the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association Beaverdale Books has a large selection of books written by Indie authors, and frequently hosts events featuring Iowa authors, story times and writing activities for children, and specializes in Iowa Writers' Workshop authors, do-ityourself topics, and health and fitness. Alice said that even though she can't compete with the selection you'll see at the big box stores, she still offers titles from mass appeal authors like Stephen King and James Patterson, as well as others that top current "best seller" lists. She also special orders books for customers several times a week, and notes that many of her patrons enjoy the nostalgic feel of shopping at a small local bookstore. Recently, Alice and her staff celebrated their 10-year anniversary with an all-day event at the store and customers joined in celebrating the books, reading, and storytelling that’s offered on a daily basis at this little neighborhood treasure. The day started with fun story times for children, and continued with refreshments and special offers and discounts on purchases. Members of the Published Authors Liaison were also on site for informal readings and book-signings. Alice said the anniversary event was a big success and, most of all, enjoyed seeing and talking with all of her customers throughout the day. She absolutely loves being in Beaverdale and is looking forward to the next 10 years. "We had a great celebration on July 9 with hundreds of people at the store, judging by how many tote bags and buttons and books we gave away. We saw many "charter" customers and a lot of new ones. So many people thanked us for being here - I can't imagine being anywhere else but Beaverdale!" She said. For more information, call 515-279-5400, stop by Beaverdale Books, located at 2629 Beaver Avenue, Suite 1, or visit www.beaverdalebooks.com. IN ATED • LOC RDALE! E BEAV IS JOB • NO MALL! To our surprise, Beaverdale won both categories out of the more than fifty neighborhoods in the city of Des Moines. Chef's Kitchen owners, Kristi and Steve Little, were both on hand to accept the award. Eugene Buckmiller and his wife, Donna, were not. Luckily, Beaverdale president Sean Bagniewski also serves as the president of Des Neighbors. He was able to call Eugene's daughter, Terri, who was able to get him out of his pajamas and to the awards ceremony just in the nick of time. The more than 100 people in attendance were just as thrilled with Eugene as we all are. We wish both Chef's Kitchen and Eugene congratulations in their well-deserved awards.
