Wenn ich jeweils meine 81-jährige Mutter im Weisstannental
besuche, dann trinke ich mit ihr bei einem Schwatz einige
Gläser gutes, klares Quellwasser. Zwei bis drei Liter Thermalwasser als Trinkwasser braucht mein Körper jeden Tag, um
vital zu bleiben. Wir leben in unserer Region umgeben von
einem unermesslichen Reichtum, den wir oft gar nicht bewusst wahrnehmen: das Wasser aus den Quellen tief in den
Bergen, in Flüssen und Seen.
Whenever I visit my 81-year-old mother in the Weisstannen valley, I share a few glasses of good, clear spring water with her
while we chat. I need to drink two to three litres of thermal water a day if I am to remain energetic. We live in a region where
we are surrounded by an immeasurable richness we are often
not consciously aware of: water from springs deep in the mountains, in rivers and in lakes.

Clinic Bad Ragaz reveals how to defy life and
still be happy.

Herr Villiger, am 1. September setzte man mit der
Eröffnung der neuen Clinic Bad Ragaz – The finest Art of
Rehabilitation – einen weiteren Meilenstein im Gesamtangebot des Grand Resort. An wen richtet sich die
neue Klinik?
Dank der Clinic Bad Ragaz mit vorerst 18 Spa Lofts können
wir Patienten unmittelbar nach ihrem Spitalaufenthalt bei
uns aufnehmen und ihnen eine moderne stationäre medizinische 24-Stunden-Rehabilitationsbehandlung bieten. Zudem sind wir in der Lage, jederzeit auf das resorteigene Medizinische Zentrum für ambulante Rehabilitation mit über
30 Ärzten und 40 Therapeuten zurückzugreifen. Das Setting
im Grand Resort Bad Ragaz mit einer Hotelinfrastruktur und
einer Küche auf 5-Sterne-Niveau sowie einer eigenen Therme ist ebenfalls einzigartig. Das Angebot richtet sich grundsätzlich an Privat- und Halbprivatversicherte sowie an
Selbstzahler.
Was umfasst Rehabilitation heute?
Basis bildet das von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO
postulierte bio-psycho-soziale Rehabilitationskonzept zur
möglichst raschen Reintegration. Mit der Clinic Bad Ragaz
decken wir drei Bereiche ab: die muskuloskelettale, die internistische und ab 2015 die psychosomatische Behandlung.
Moderne Rehabilitation greift erst, wenn es ein Team-Approach ist. Wichtig ist, ein klares Rehabilitationsziel zu definieren. Dies kann sich für den einen Patienten darauf beschränken, zu Hause wieder selbstständig aus dem Bett zu

Beat Villiger, Jahrgang 1944, ist Facharzt für Lungenkrankheiten/Innere Medizin FMH und Physikalische
Medizin/Rehabilitation FMH sowie Sportmedizin
SGSM. Seit 2011 ist er ärztlicher Leiter des
Medizinischen Zentrums Bad Ragaz. Er ist Präsident
des Spitalrates des Luzerner Kantonsspitals und
Past-Präsident von Swiss Health (OSEC). Zuvor war
er von 2005 bis 2011 CEO des Schweizer Paraplegiker-Zentrums Nottwil, von 2000 bis 2005 Direktor
und Chefarzt des Medizinischen Zentrums Bad Ragaz und Leiter des Swiss Olympic Medical Center
Bad Ragaz. Von 1983 bis 2000 war er Direktor und
Chefarzt der Thurgauer Schaffhauser Höhenklinik in
Davos, von 1992 bis 2008 Mitglied im Swiss Olympic Medical Team, ab 2000 in leitender Funktion. Er
ist Past-Präsident der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft
für Sportmedizin SGSM und ehemaliges Vorstandsmitglied der Schweiz. Gesellschaft für Physikalische Medizin und Rehabilitation. Seit 1. September 2014 ist er auch ärztlicher Leiter der neuen, resorteigenen Clinic Bad Ragaz.

Dr Villiger, the opening of the Clinic Bad Ragaz – The
finest Art of Rehabilitation on 1 September marked a
further milestone in the development of the overall
services provided by the Grand Resort. Who is the new
clinic intended for?
Thanks to the Clinic Bad Ragaz with its current selection of
18 Spa Lofts, we can accommodate patients immediately following their discharge from hospital and offer them modern
inpatient medical rehabilitation treatment 24 hours a day. In
addition to this, we can also turn to the resort’s own Medical
Health Center for outpatient rehabilitation with over 30 doctors and 40 therapists. The setting at the Grand Resort Bad
Ragaz, with a five-star hotel infrastructure and kitchen as well
as our own thermal spa, is also unique. The offer is targeted
primarily at individuals with private and semi-private insurance, as well as those covering their own costs.
What does the rehabilitation process involve nowadays?
The process is based on the biopsychosocial rehabilitation
concept proposed by the WHO (World Health Organization) for
fastest possible reintegration. We cover three areas of medicine at the Clinic Bad Ragaz: musculoskeletal, internal and,
from 2015, psychosomatic treatment. Modern rehabilitation
can only work in a team-based approach, and it is important to

wird unter meiner Leitung von zwei Chefärzten geführt, Chefarzt Dr. med. Hans Ulrich Wilhelm und Co-Chefarzt Dr. med.
Clemens Sieber. Ihnen stehen mehrere Fachärzte für Rehabilitation zur Seite. Die Zimmer sind Wohlfühloasen auf
5-Sterne-Niveau. Gleichzeitig sind sie mit allem ausgestattet, was ein Patientenzimmer benötigt. Falls medizinisch
sinnvoll, können auch Angehörige in den Spa Suites übernachten, damit zur raschen Genesung des Patienten beitragen und gleichzeitig selbst neue Kräfte tanken.

the helm of a company with thousands of employees.
How is the new clinic furnished and equipped?
The Clinic Bad Ragaz, small but perfectly formed with its current total of 18 rooms, is located on the first to third floors of
the Spa Suites and comprises 26 beds that can be adapted to
meet patients’ needs. Under my direction, the clinic is run by
senior consultant Dr Hans-Ulrich Wilhelm MD and co-senior
consultant Dr Clemens Sieber MD, together with a team of
several doctors who specialise in rehabilitation. The rooms are
oases of wellbeing with five-star quality and are equipped with
everything that patients need. If appropriate from a medical
perspective, relatives can also spend the night in the Spa
Suites and help to contribute to the patient’s rapid recovery,
while also recharging their own batteries.

What is the difference between Villiger the manager, and
Villiger the doctor?
No difference at all! In my eyes, appreciation, competence
and humanity towards patients and all members of staff are
the basic requirements for successful work. I have the ability
to motivate and inspire even those patients who struggle with
themselves. I’ve always found great enjoyment in what I do.
What is the economic significance of the Medical Health
Center and the Clinic Bad Ragaz for the Werdenberg and
Sarganserland region?
70 per cent of the patients we take care of at our Medical
Health Center also live in the region. They come to us for prevention, diagnosis and therapy. Our doctors are also integrated in the region’s emergency services. We are creating
around 25 to 30 new jobs with the new clinic. The Grand Resort creates value added of around 40 million Swiss francs for
the municipality of Bad Ragaz, and around 70 million for the
canton of St. Gallen. The senior consultant of a renowned German clinic recently told me that with the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz we had created a jewel in rehabilitation medicine. Our colleagues from the University of Delaware in New York State
were also highly enthusiastic when they saw the ideal combination of medicine and hotel resort.

Was unterscheidet den Manager Villiger vom Arzt
Villiger?
Ich bin immer der Gleiche! Wertschätzung, Kompetenz und
Menschlichkeit gegenüber den Patienten und allen Mitarbeitenden ist meines Erachtens die Grundvoraussetzung für erfolgreiches Arbeiten. Ich kann Menschen mitreissen, auch
den mit sich selbst hadernden Patienten. Ich hatte schon
immer die totale Freude an dem, was ich mache.
Welche wirtschaftliche Bedeutung haben das Medizinische Zentrum und die Clinic Bad Ragaz für die Region
Werdenberg und Sarganserland?
70 Prozent unserer Patienten, die wir im Medizinischen Zentrum betreuen, wohnen in der Region. Sie kommen zu uns zur
Prävention, Diagnostik und Therapie. Unsere Ärzte sind auch
in den Notfalldienst der Region integriert. Wir schaffen rund
25 bis 30 neue Arbeitsplätze mit der neuen Klinik. Das Grand
Resort erzielt eine Wertschöpfung für die Gemeinde Bad Ragaz von rund 40 Millionen, für den Kanton St. Gallen von rund
70 Millionen Franken. Der Chefarzt einer renommierten Klinik aus Deutschland sagte unlängst zu mir, wir hätten mit
dem Grand Resort Bad Ragaz ein Juwel der Rehabilitationsmedizin erschaffen. Auch unsere Kollegen von der University
of Delaware im Bundesstaat New York waren hell begeistert,

Beat Villiger, born in 1944, is a specialist in pulmonary
diseases/internal medicine FMH and physical medicine/rehabilitation FMH, as well as sports medicine
SGSM. He has been the medical director of the Medical Health Center Bad Ragaz since 2011. He is chairman of the Hospital Board of Lucerne Cantonal Hospital and former chairman of Swiss Health (OSEC).
From 2005 to 2011 he was CEO of the Swiss Paraplegic Centre, Nottwil, from 2000 to 2005 director and
senior consultant at the Medical Health Center Bad
Ragaz, and head of the Swiss Olympic Medical Center
Bad Ragaz. From 1983 to 2000 he was director and

Wir leben in einer sehr fordernden Leistungsgesellschaft. Es
ist normal, nicht immer und überall mithalten zu können. Depression, Burnout, Ängste, Schwierigkeiten in Familie und
Beziehungen – dazu stehen und dies zu akzeptieren ist wichtig. Es braucht ein Coming-out für diese Defizite, damit sie
nicht mehr nur im Verborgenen stattfinden. So können wir
optimal helfen.

Expansion of the psychosomatic department at the Clinic
Bad Ragaz is planned for 2015. Have patterns of disease
changed?
We live in a highly demanding performance-based society. It’s
normal not to be able to keep up everywhere and all the time.
Depression, burnout, anxiety, difficulties within families and
relationships – coming to terms with this can be difficult. It
takes a kind of ‘coming-out’ for these defects, so that they no
longer continue in secret. This is how we can provide the best
help.

What do people need to live a healthy and happy life?
Probably the most important element is being at peace with
themselves. Not pretending to themselves, having clear goals
and trying to realise them step by step. In addition to this,
people need an environment where they feel in good hands.

Sich nichts vorzumachen, klare Ziele zu haben und versuchen, diese Schritt für Schritt umzusetzen. Zudem braucht
der Mensch ein Umfeld, in welchem er sich aufgehoben
fühlt. Das kann in einer Partnerschaft sein oder in einem beruflichen Team. Und wer bei allem, was ihm das Leben dann
und wann bietet, das Lachen über sich selbst nicht verlernt
hat, ist auf einem guten Weg zum wahren Glück. Eben, ich
bin und bleibe ein unverbesserlicher Sunny!

Dr. Masaru Emoto, promovierter Politologe, Unternehmer

Crystal clear
Dr Masaru Emoto, who has a doctorate in political science and
is an entrepreneur and publisher, focused in the 1990s in particular on studying water. He is the inventor of the water crystal images that have become known all over the world. These
images show that water that is exposed to positive statements
forms much more attractive ice crystals than water subjected
to statements such as “You’re ugly”, “I hate you”, “You’re embarrassing” or similar. The same effect is achieved by music
on water: harmonious sounds – Bach or Mozart, for example
– result in spectacular ice-crystal forms. Heavy metal music,
conversely, leads to distorted, almost unrecognisable water
crystals.

Dissonance versus harmony – water appears to absorb the
finest possible vibrations from the subtle environment. As if

Around 70 per cent of the human body consists of water,

“Just like one tuning fork is sounded by another, water vibrates

explains the chemist. His Japanese mentor is a member of the
Council of World Elders, an association of the representatives
of native populations who, in the interests of world peace,
apply and pass on knowledge of traditions that have been
handed down. Emoto has written over 50 books, which have
been translated into 45 different languages, has appeared before thousands of people in almost all the countries of the
world and, at the age of 70, is a tireless ambassador of peace.

Rasmus Gaupp-Berghausen wollte als junger Wissenschafter den bekannten Wasser-Guru Dr. Masaru
Emoto aus Japan widerlegen. Der Vorarlberger ist Diplomingenieur für Landschaftsplanung und Landschaftspflege, im Besitze eines Masters in Agricultural Science, verheiratet und Vater von vier Kindern.
Schon während seines Studiums in Dänemark und
Mittelamerika galt sein Fokus den Agrarwissenschaften mit Schwerpunkt Wasserversorgung, Kontamination von Wasser und Bodenqualität. Heute liegt der
Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit in der Entwicklung des
"Sound of Soul"-Systems, das auf der Herzratenvariabilität (HRV) des Menschen beruht. Ein gesundes
Herz schlägt unregelmässig. Dies lässt sich messen
und visualisieren. Körpereigene Schwingungen, basierend auf den stets variierenden Frequenzen der HRV,
werden in Klang und Licht umgesetzt. So entsteht die
ureigene Lebensmelodie. Diese wirkt regulierend auf
Körper, Geist und Seele und kann zur Heilung führen.
As a young scientist, Rasmus Gaupp-Berghausen wanted to refute the theories of the renowned water guru
Dr Masaru Emoto from Japan. The engineer from
Vorarlberg in Austria is qualified in landscape planning
and maintenance, has a Master in Agricultural Science,
is married and has four children. While still studying in
Denmark and Central America he focused on agricultural science, specialising in water supply, water
contamination and soil quality. Today his work is focused primarily on the development of the “Sound of
Soul” system, which is based on heart rate variability
(HRV) in humans. A healthy heart has an irregular beat,
which can be measured and visualised. The body’s
own vibrations, based on the constantly varying frequencies of HRV, are transposed into sound and light,
giving rise to our very own melody of life. This has a
regulating effect on body, mind and soul, and can lead

Irina Taculina ist seit vier Jahren Butleresse in den Spa Suites
des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. Dort, wo das wertvolle Thermalwasser aus allen Wasserhähnen fliesst und sie täglich mit
den Gästen über den kleinen, zusätzlichen Luxus sprechen
darf. Deshalb ist es naheliegend, dass ihr die Ausbildung zur
Wassersommelière den ergänzenden «Flow» für die Betreuung der Gäste gibt. Im Februar 2014 erhielt sie als zweite
Wassersommelière der Schweiz an der Doemens-Genussakademie in München ihr Diplom. Seither steht sie den
5-Sterne-Gästen an der Mineralwasserbar in der 36cinq
Lounge der Spa Suites für Fragen rund um das Thema Wasser zur Verfügung.
Irina Taculina has been a buttleress at the Spa Suites of the
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz for four years. She works in a place
where precious thermal water flows from every single tap and
where she can spend her days talking to guests about this little extra luxury. In this role, her training as a water sommelier
enables her to add extra sparkle to the service she provides
her guests. In February 2014 she received her diploma from
the Doemens Savour Academy in Munich, making her the second water sommelier in Switzerland, and has since been on
hand to answer water-related questions from the 5-star guests
at the mineral water bar in the 36cinq Lounge of the Spa
Suites.
Vom Ufer an die Quelle
Ihre Leidenschaft fürs Wasser hat sie schon als kleines Mädchen ausgelebt. Irina ist an der Ostseeküste Lettlands aufgewachsen, ihr Vater war Kapitän. Die Anziehung zum Thema
Wasser liegt in der Familie. Heute wohnt die 30-Jährige am
Bodensee und schwärmt von der Reinheit des Wassers, welches die Schweiz so besonders mache. Die Berge, die gesunde Luft und die stetige Nähe zum Seeufer geben ihr das
Gefühl von Heimat. «Hier in der Schweiz bin ich angekommen», erzählt sie mit ihren strahlend blauen Augen, die an
einen Bergsee erinnern. Beeindruckend, dass sich das Wasser auch in ihren Augen widerspiegelt! Mit 19 Jahren zog sie
als Aupair nach Lindau. Dort liess sie sich für sieben Jahre
nieder, machte eine dreijährigen Ausbildung zur Hotelfachfrau in einem Golfhotel bei Lindau. Später hat sie sich
während eines dreimonatigen Sprachaufenthalts bei ihrer
Mutter in London im Grand Resort Bad Ragaz beworben.
From shore to source
Her passion for water emerged during her childhood, which
she spent on the Baltic Sea coast of Latvia. Her father was a
sea captain – the affinity for water runs in the family. Today the
30-year-old lives at Lake Constance and delights in the purity
of the water that makes Switzerland so special. The mountains, the healthy air and her constant closeness to the shores
of the lake give her a feeling of home. “Here in Switzerland I
feel like I have arrived”, she says with her bright blue eyes,
which are reminiscent of a mountain lake. Impressive, how the
water is even reflected in her eyes! She moved to Lindau as an
au pair at the age of 19 and stayed for seven years, during
which she completed a three-year training course as a hotel
manager at a golf hotel near Lindau. Later, during a threemonth stay with her mother in London to improve her language
skills, she applied for a position at the Grand Resort Bad
Ragaz. On receiving the good news from Switzerland, Irina

Nach der erfreulichen Zusage aus der Schweiz kehrte Irina
der stickigen englischen Stadt – wie sie diese beschreibt –
den Rücken zu. So suchte sie sich ein Plätzchen am Ufer und
richtete ihr Zuhause wieder am Bodensee ein. Zurück am
Wasser und wunschlos glücklich – das ist Leben für sie. «Ich
brauche es wie die Luft zum Atmen», sagt sie lächelnd und
fügt hinzu: «Und wenn wir bedenken, dass unser Körper zu
zirka 70 Prozent aus Wasser besteht, ist auch klar, warum
Leben und Wasser so nahe beieinander liegen.»
Wasser ist nicht gleich Wasser
Sprachentalent Irina Taculina ist im Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
voll in ihrem Element und erklärt den Gästen in perfektem
Deutsch, Englisch, Russisch und Lettisch die Unterschiede
und Vorteile von über 30 verschiedenen Wasser, welche das
Resort anbietet. Probiert man bei Irina verschiedene Wasser,
erfährt man mit eigenem Gaumen, dass Wasser doch tatsächlich salzig, süss, bitter oder sauer sein kann. So empfiehlt die Wassersommelière zum Beispiel Gästen, die nach
einem langen Flug anreisen, ein magnesiumhaltiges Wasser,
um den Körper wieder in Schwung zu bringen. Des Weiteren
gibt es Wasser, welches gegen Verstopfung hilft, sich speziell
für die Zubereitung von Babynahrung eignet oder wegen des
Salzgehaltes besonders für Sportler geeignet ist. Auch das
Thermalwasser hat besondere Eigenschaften. «Manchmal
kommt innerhalb von 30 Minuten alles auf einmal und man
gerät als Butleresse in Stresssituationen. Dann nehme ich

No two waters are alike
With her flair for languages, Irina Taculina is in her element at
the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz and can explain the differences
and benefits of the over 30 different waters on offer in perfect
German, English, Russian and Latvian. Guests who spend time
with Irina sampling various waters learn through their own
taste buds that water can indeed be salty, sweet, bitter or
sour. The water sommelier recommends, for example, that
guests arriving after a long flight drink water with magnesium
to reinvigorate the body. There is also water that helps with
constipation, water that is particularly suitable for preparing
baby food or water that is good for athletes due to its salt content. Thermal water also has particular characteristics.
“Sometimes everything comes at once in the space of 30 minutes, and things can get quite stressful for a buttleress. Then I
take a few seconds for myself and drink some thermal water
from the tap. This is hugely calming, and the situation is
saved.” In addition to its calming effect, thermal water is also
ideal for detoxifying the body due to its low mineral content.

Gäste schätzen das Know-how der jungen Wassersommelière und nehmen mit Bewunderung auf, dass Wasser weit
mehr ist als Zweck zum Abwasch oder Körperpflege. Irina
Taculina ist weit gereist und weiss, dass sauberes und gesundes Wasser keine Selbstverständlichkeit ist. Ihre Leidenschaft ist, mit dem Ragazer Thermalwasser den Gästen die
Reinheit der Schweiz näherzubringen. Sie erklärt den Gästen, wie man Wasser von Wasser unterscheidet und zeigt
ihnen auf, wofür sich die einzelnen Wassersorten eignen. So
empfiehlt sie zum Beispiel, welches Wasser zu welchen Speisen passt und welches reine «Tröpfchen» den Geschmack
eines bestimmten Weines am besten hervorhebt. Zu deftigen
Gerichten trinkt man besser Wasser mit Kohlensäure, da der
Sauerstoff den Gaumen öffnet und damit den Geschmack intensiviert. Vor dem Zubettgehen hingegen empfiehlt sich stilles Wasser, da Kohlensäure den Geist belebt und dies einem
ruhigen Schlaf wenig beisteuert. Mit ihren Empfehlungen
möchte Irina das menschliche Bewusstsein über die Eigenschaften des Wassers schärfen.

Guests value the expertise of the young water sommelier and
are amazed to find out that there is so much more to water
than washing the dishes or taking a shower. Irina Taculina has
travelled widely and knows that clean and healthy water is not
to be taken for granted. She is passionate about communicating the purity of Switzerland to guests through the thermal
water of Ragaz, explaining how water can vary and showing
them what the individual varieties are most suitable for. She
recommends, for example, a specific water for a given meal
and points out which of the varieties available might best highlight the taste of a given wine. Hearty meals are ideally accompanied by sparkling water, as the oxygen opens the palate,
thereby intensifying the taste. Before going to bed, on the

Following the dissolution of the Pfäfers monastery in 1838, the
canton of St. Gallen took over the thermal source, together
with the property of the monastery. The St. Gallen engineer
Adolf Näf was commissioned to build a road to the Altes Bad
Pfäfers, and as part of this commission, he was required to lay
wooden pipes for the thermal water to travel the 4.5-kilometre
stretch. By 31 May 1840, the project was complete, and the
precious healing water was welcomed with an appropriate
ceremony as it arrived in front of the Hof Ragaz.

Steinschlag oder Murgang zerstört wurde, musste der defekte Teuchel in einer Nachtschicht ausgewechselt werden. Zunächst galt es dann, den Thermalwasserzufluss im Bad Pfäfers zu stoppen und vorübergehend in die Tamina umzuleiten. Zusätzliche Hilfskräfte von Valens gruben die beschädigte Stelle von mindestens fünf Teuchellängen frei und
ersetzten den defekten Teuchel. Als Beleuchtung dienten
den Arbeitern ihre mitgebrachten Stalllaternen.
Polyethylen für mehr Sicherheit
Nach der Teuchelleitung aus Lärchenholz (ab 1840) und den
doppelwandigen Isolierrohren aus Faserbeton (ab 1950) ist

The wooden pipes of Ragaz
During the winter months, workers from the Ragaz–Pfäfers
convalescent homes felled larches around five metres tall in
the nearby woods. Each of the trees was used to produce two
wooden pipes, not by boring, but – in a similar way to old wine
barrels – the pipes were assembled from individual staves.
Foreman Leonhard Bon from Bad Ragaz was present and
played his part in the construction of these slightly domed
conduits. The cross section of the outlet opening varied in size
depending on the number of individual wooden staves, each
joined to the next with “tongues”. The pipes were then painted
with the surface layer of oil paint to provide a waterproof coating, thus making any further insulation unnecessary.
Landslides and rockfalls
If, during the summer season, a pipe was destroyed by a rockfall or mudslide, it had to be replaced with a new one overnight. First of all, the flow of thermal water in Bad Pfäfers had
to be stopped and temporarily diverted to the Tamina. Additional help was called in from Valens to dig out the affected
area to a length of at least five pipes and replace the damaged
ones. The workers brought lanterns from their own stables to
provide light in the darkness.
Polyethylene for improved safety
Following the larch pipes (from 1840) and the double-walled
insulated pipes of fibre-reinforced concrete (from 1950), the
third generation – pipes made of polyethylene – is expected to
be in place from 2015. The main reason for this extensive re-

1868 sicherte sich Architekt Bernhard Simon die Rechte am Thermalwasser für 100 Jahre. 1955 wurde der
Vertrag erstmals um 50 Jahre erneuert und wäre 2018
ausgelaufen. Doch bereits 2003 wurde eine neue Konzession ausgehandelt. Zu den Bedingungen gehörte,
dass maximal 4000 Liter Quellwasser pro Minute für
«Trink-, Therapie-, Bade- und Heizzwecke» genutzt
werden dürfen. 65 Prozent der Wassermenge stehen
auch heute noch dem Grand Resort Bad Ragaz zur
freien Verfügung. 25 Prozent werden an die Stiftung Valens und das öffentliche Bad der Kurhotels Valens AG
abgegeben. Die vertraglichen Bestimmungen haben bis
ins Jahr 2067 Gültigkeit. Das Thermalwasser entpuppte
sich als nie versiegendes «Blaues Gold» für Bad Ragaz
und förderte in den vergangenen 175 Jahren dessen
Ent wicklung hin zum heute international bekannten
Tourismus-, Bade- und Kurort.

public baths of Kurhotel Valens AG. The provisions of the
agreement will remain valid until 2067. The thermal water
has proven to be an unceasing flow of “Blue Gold” for
Bad Ragaz, helping it over the last 175 years to develop
into an internationally renowned tourism, spa and health
resort.

Ragazer Teuchel
Während der Wintermonate fällten die Arbeiter der Kuranstalten Ragaz-Pfäfers in den nahen Waldungen Lärchen mit
einer Länge von rund fünf Metern. Daraus konnten je zwei
Teuchel hergestellt werden. Die Stämme wurden nicht etwa
angebohrt, sondern – ähnlich wie bei alten Weinfässern –
aus einzelnen Dauben zusammengefügt. Werkmeister Leonhard Bon aus Bad Ragaz hat die Konstruktion dieser leicht
bombierten Leitungsröhren noch miterlebt. Der Querschnitt

The team of Borussia Dortmund paid their fourth visit to Bad
Ragaz for their 2014 summer training camp. “Because the
conditions at the Grand Resort are absolutely perfect for us,”
explains Dr Andreas Schlumberger, who is the head of rehabilitation, athletics and fitness at BVB. The modern weights
room, the great football pitch nearby, the peace and quiet, the
excellent food, the round-the-clock assistance – everything is
just right. “This is also important, as just before the league
starts, the footballers train up to three times a day, and the
demands on their bodies are high,” says Andreas Schlumberger. Regeneration, which includes stretching, massage, physiotherapy and ice-cold water, is therefore particularly important.

Bereits zum vierten Mal führte der deutsche Fussballclub Borussia Dortmund im Sommer 2014 sein Trainingslager in Bad
Ragaz durch. «Weil wir hier im Grand Resort absolut perfekte
Bedingungen vorfinden», wie Dr. phil. Andreas Schlumberger,
Leiter Rehabilitation, Athletik und Fitness beim BVB, erklärt.
Der moderne Kraftraum, der gut bespielbare Fussballplatz in
der Nähe, die angenehme Ruhe, die ausgezeichnete Ernährung, die Betreuung rund um die Uhr – hier stimme einfach
alles. «Das ist auch wichtig, denn die Fussballer trainieren
kurz vor dem Bundesliga-Auftakt bis zu drei Einheiten pro
Tag. Da ist die körperliche Belastung sehr hoch», sagt Andreas Schlumberger. Einen hohen Stellenwert hat deshalb die
Regeneration, die unter anderem Stretching, Massage, Physiotherapie oder Eiswasser beinhaltet.
Momente des Glücks
Zusätzlich zu den bisherigen Regenerationsmethoden konnten die Fussballer des BVB auch ein neues Angebot des Medizinischen Zentrums Bad Ragaz benützen: die Kryosauna.
Mit der Ganzkörperkältetherapie kann man laut Experten erreichen, dass die Erholungsphasen verkürzt und die Trainingsprozesse hochwertiger werden. Doch was ist eine Kryosauna und was bewirkt sie genau? Die Kryosauna ist ein
Hightech-Gerät, bei dem die therapeutisch wirksamen Temperaturen nicht hoch, sondern sehr tief sind. Sie liegen zwischen –120 und –170 Grad. Ein Durchgang dauert rund drei
Minuten. Der Saunabesucher trägt dabei lediglich Baumwollunterwäsche, Baumwollsocken und warme Fellfinken. Der
Kopf bleibt während der Kälteprozedur im Freien oberhalb
der Kältezone. «Die Extremkälte ist übrigens trocken und
wird deshalb nicht als eiskalt, sondern als überaus erfrischend und angenehm empfunden», weiss Dr. med. Hans
Ulrich Wilhelm, Rheumatologe im Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.
Er attestiert der Anwendung heilende Wirkung, grosses
Wohlbefinden und kurz nach dem Durchgang sogar Momente
des Glücks, weil dann vermehrt körpereigene Endorphine
ausgeschüttet werden.

In addition to familiar regeneration methods, the BVB players
were also able to try out the cryosauna, a new facility on offer
at the Bad Ragaz Medical Health Center. According to experts,
whole-body cryotherapy helps to reduce recovery times and
make training more effective. But what is a cryosauna, and
what does it do exactly? A cryosauna is a high-tech device that
employs not high, but extremely low therapeutically effective
temperatures, ranging between –120 and –170 degrees. A
session lasts around three minutes. Visitors to the sauna wear
just cotton underwear, cotton socks and warm fur-lined slippers, with their head remaining outside the cold area throughout the procedure. “The extreme cold is actually a dry cold
and therefore not perceived as icy but as very refreshing and
pleasant,” adds Dr Hans Ulrich Wilhelm, rheumatologist at the
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. He attests to the therapy’s healing
effects, the great sense of wellbeing and even the feeling of
happiness shortly after the session from the increased release
of endorphins.

des Schweigens und der Andacht. Hier darf
auch gefeiert und gelacht werden. Die «TaminaNacht» lockte an einem bezaubernden Sommerabend 250 Gäste ins Resort zur sinnlichen
Verführung durch Musik und Gesang am und
im Wasser.
A temple has always been more than a place for
silence and meditation – celebration and laughter also have their place. The Tamina Night
attracted 250 guests to the resort on an enchanting summer evening for a sensual journey
through music and song, both at and in the
water.
Die Klassizistik, in einer modernen Interpretation, hat den
Zürcher Architekten Joseph Smolenicky vor fünf Jahren dazu
inspiriert, der Tamina-Therme ein neues, zeitgemässes Gesicht zu geben. Dass in einem solchen Bau nicht nur Badegäste verweilen mögen, liegt auf der Hand. Die 115 Säulen und
hohen Decken in weiss lackiertem Fichtenholz vermitteln
denn auch den Eindruck, ein Tempel der Neuzeit sei hier für
die Öffentlichkeit erschaffen worden.
It was the modern interpretation of the classical that, five years
ago now, inspired the Zurich architect Joseph Smolenicky to
give the Tamina Therme a new contemporary face. This is a
building made for inviting not only those visitors wishing to
bathe, as the 115 columns and the high ceilings in white-painted
pine also give the impression that a modern-day temple has
been created for the public.

Sphärische Klangwelt
Am Samstag, 14. Juni, feierte die Tamina-Therme mit der «Tamina-Nacht» ihr 5-Jahr-Jubiläum. Die Schlossmediale Werdenberg, ein internationales Festival für Alte Musik, Neue Musik
und Audiovisuelle Kunst, verliess für eine Nacht ihr gewohntes
Zuhause in Buchs. Geboten wurde in Bad Ragaz ein Abend
voller Sinnlichkeit. Das Thermalbad wuchs als Szenerie über
sich hinaus und offenbarte seine wahre Natur. Mit nährender
und flüsternder Stimme war die Heilkraft des Thermalwassers
allgegenwärtig spürbar. Das Plätschern beim Überschwappen
aus den randvollen, weissen Becken, die dampfende Wärme
trotz hoher Räume, dazu die Naturjodelstimme einer jungen
Frau, Sopran- und Tenorstimmen weiterer Interpreten, Elektrobeats aus Boxen, elfenhafte Synchronschwimmerinnen – all

Music of the spheres
On Saturday, 14 June, the Tamina Therme celebrated its fifth
anniversary with the Tamina Night. Schlossmediale Werdenberg, an international festival for early and new music and
audio-visual art, left its usual location in Buchs for one night to
offer an evening full of sensuality in Bad Ragaz. The thermal spa
more than rose to the occasion as the backdrop for the evening, given the opportunity to reveal its true nature. With its nourishing and whispering voice, the healing power of the thermal
water could be felt all around. The rippling water spilling out of
the brimful white pools, the steaming warmth despite the high
ceilings, combined with the natural yodelling voice of a young
woman, the soprano and tenor voices of the other performers,
electro beats from loudspeakers, enchanting synchronised

dies ergab ein atmosphärisches Stimmungsbild mit nachhaltigem Eindruck.
swimmers – all of this came together to create an atmosphere
that would leave a lasting impression.
Naturjodel am Wasser
Ein wenig vermittelten sie den Anschein, als seien sie Tempelheiler aus dem alten, versunkenen Atlantis – die fünf Mitglieder des Ensembles Neue Vocalsolisten, gekleidet in lange Gewänder mit Leuchteffekten. Ihr Madrigal für fünf Stimmen,
aufgeführt am Beckenrand mit den übergrossen Ovalfenstern
im Hintergrund, erklang als meditatives Erzählen. Die Töne
aus den Stimmenkörpern schienen in die Tiefen des Wassers
abzutauchen, um von dort geläutert emporzusteigen. Derart
herausgefordert, entfaltete sich die Akustik des Thermalbades
vollumfänglich und liess so manchen Gast staunen.
Natural yodelling at the water
The five members of the ensemble Neue Vocalsolisten, dressed
in long robes with lighting effects, somehow called to mind temple healers from the ancient sunken Atlantis. Their madrigal for
five voices, performed at edge of the pool with the oversized
oval windows in the background, sounded like a meditative
story. The sounds created by the singers seemed to disappear
into the depths of the water, only to emerge again even clearer.
Challenged in this way, the acoustics of the thermal spa were
put to best effect and left many of the guests astounded.
Weite Wege
Die Toggenburgerin Nadja Räss kontrastierte zu den Neuen
Vocalsolisten mit ihrer glasklaren Naturjodelstimme. Diese
führ te die Zuschauer zurück ins Hier und Jetzt. Sopranistin
Claudia Herr dialogisierte mit der Jodelstimme von Nadja Räss
und das nicht nur über Wasser, nein – auch unter Wasser. Sie
interpretierte liturgische Gesänge von Hildegard von Bingen
und deutete mit John Cages «Litany for the Whale» wohl auf die
Rückkehr der Grosssäuger und ihrer weisen Botschaft an die
Menschheit hin. Vollends in eine anmutige Theaterbühne
verwandelten die jungen Synchronschwimmerinnen vom
Schwimmclub Flös Buchs das Thermalbecken. Sie «wassertanzten» zu einer Komposition der Finnin Kaija Saariaho. Das
Stück trug den Titel «Lonh»; ins Deutsche übersetzt bedeutet
dies «weit weg». – Weit weg oder einfach nur weiter Weg?
Letzteren sucht sich das Wasser, um alles mit allem zu verbinden. Kein noch so mächtiges Hindernis kann es aufhalten.

Nadja Räss from Toggenburg offered a contrast to the Neue Vocalsolisten with her glass-clear natural yodelling voice that drew
the audience back to the here and now. Soprano Claudia Herr
entered into a dialogue with the yodelling voice of Nadja Räss,
and not only above the water – also below it. She performed liturgical songs by Hildegard von Bingen and, with John Cage’s
Litany for the Whale, could have been referring to the return of
the large mammals and their wise message to humanity. The
young synchronised swimmers from the swimming club Flös
Buchs transformed the thermal pool into a graceful stage, “water-dancing” to a composition by the Finnish composer Kaija
Saariaho entitled Lonh, which can be translated as “distant”.
Distant, or just long distance? The latter is the route taken by
water in its efforts to connect everything with everything. There
is no obstacle powerful enough to hold it back. The element of
water, feminine, soft and transforming.

Lantsch/Lenz liegt etwa da, wo das Murmeltier sich für den Winterschlaf zurückzieht.
Ein authentisches Bergdorf. Im Kanton Graubünden gibt es noch viele von ihnen. Der
Charme hat eine raue Färbung, der Charakter
ist bodenständig.
Lantsch/Lenz is the kind of place where marmots choose to bed down for the winter. An
authentic mountain village, of which there are
many in the canton of Graubünden. Its charm
is rough around the edges; its character is down
to earth.
Im Dachgeschoss des Schulhauses mitten im Dorf mit seinen
520 Einwohnern hat ein junger Einheimischer sein Atelier
eingerichtet. Es ist Mirko Baselgia. «Wir sind grad mit dem
Auspacken der vielen Kartons beschäftigt, darum sieht es
unordentlich aus», begrüsst er den Gast entschuldigend.
On the top floor of the schoolhouse in the middle of the village
of 520 residents, a young local has set up his studio. His name
is Mirko Baselgia. “We’re busy unpacking all the boxes just
now, which is why it looks a little untidy”, he explains apologetically to his visitor.

Einheimisch auf Zeit
Ein bescheidener Kulturbeitrag der Gemeinde fördert den
heute nicht mehr ganz unbekannten Bergdorfbewohner. Das
Atelier im Schulhaus ist eines auf Zeit. Denn eigentlich wäre
dies der Mehrzweckraum der Gemeinde. Doch der fehlt das
Geld zum Vollausbau. Für Baselgia ist es das erste eigene
Atelier, wo er ungestört wirken kann. Vieles scheint bei ihm,
dessen Muttersprache Romanisch ist, nur auf Zeit gedacht.
In einer permanenten Metamorphose bewegt er sich nach
vorn und gleichsam rückwärts. Bis hin zurück zu seinen Wurzeln. Diese sind in Lantsch/Lenz auf 1350 Metern über
Meer. Hier wurde er 1982 geboren, ging zur Schule, machte
in Chur eine Berufsausbildung zum Hochbauzeichner. Daraufhin folgte von 2005 bis 2010 der Besuch der Zürcher
Hochschule für Künste, die er mit einem Master of Fine Arts
abschloss.
Wasser, ein Stoff zum Arbeiten
2013 gelang ihm der Durchbruch. Mit der Verleihung des
Manor-Kunstpreises wurde der junge Bündner schlagartig einem grösseren Publikum bekannt. Baselgia macht es seinen
Betrachtern nie einfach. Er mag die Provokation. Ein Querdenker will er sein, ein Hinterfrager, ein Rechercheur. Seinen
Arbeiten gehen langwierige Studienprozesse voraus. Der
32-Jährige sucht den Auseinandersetzungsprozess mit Materialien, Formen, Ausprägungen, Strukturen, Interaktionen hin
zu neuen Sichtweisen, zu einer Handlung, die Resultat eines

not enough money to finish the work required on it. For Baselgia, it is the first time he has had a studio of his own in which
he can work undisturbed. It would appear that a great deal
about this artist, whose mother tongue is Romansh, is transient. In a continuous process of metamorphosis, he moves
forward while at the same time moving backwards, all the way
back to his roots. These roots lie in Lantsch/Lenz, 1,350 metres above sea level. He was born here in 1982 and attended
the local school, before completing his training as a draughtsman in Chur. He then went on to study at Zurich University of
the Arts from 2005 to 2010, ultimately graduating with a Master of Fine Arts.

treffe er auf das Unfassbare, das Unerwartete. Ein Rehkitz,
das auf dem Boden zusammengekauert auf seine Mutter
wartet oder ein Eichhörnchen, das aus einem Vogelhäuschen
äugt. Baselgias Naturerkundungen finden bei jedem Wetter
statt. «Ich bin wasserdicht», lächelt er.
Im Hamam in Lenzerheide ist der einheimische Künstler regelmässig Gast. «Manchmal lade ich Freunde dazu ein.» Beim
Baden kann er auf angenehme Weise Geschäftsbeziehungen
pflegen. In den arabischen Ländern, die er sehr gerne ausgiebig bereist, geniesst Baselgia den Bäderbesuch besonders intensiv. Und nebenbei wirft er ein: «Ach ja, mein Vater
ist in unserer Gemeinde für die Wasserversorgung zuständig.
Er weiss alles über unser Lantscher Wasser.»
Water – a working material
His breakthrough came in 2013 with the Manor Art Prize, a
success that introduced the young Graubündener to a wider
audience overnight. Baselgia never makes things easy for the
viewer. He likes to provoke, and sees himself as a lateral thinker, one who challenges the status quo and asks questions.
Each of his works is preceded by laborious research and investigation. The 32-year-old strives to engage with materials,
forms, manifestations, structures and interactions to arrive at
new perspectives, to create an ultimate act that is the result of
a multi-faceted process. Almost daily he takes long walks
through the countryside. “I stray from the paths, and am much
happier heading right through the heart of the woods.” He often walks barefoot, he says, and encounters on the way the
elusive and the unexpected: a fawn huddled on the ground
waiting for its mother, or a squirrel peering out of a nest box.
Baselgia can be found exploring nature in every weather. “I’m
pretty waterproof”, he says with a smile.
The local artist is a frequent visitor to the hammam in Lenzerheide. “Sometimes I invite friends to join me.” Bathing is a
pleasant way for him to cultivate his business relationships. In
the Arab countries he loves to visit, Baselgia particularly enjoys exploring the local baths. “And by the way,” he casually
adds, “my father is responsible for the water supply here in
our community. He knows all there is to know about the water
of Lantsch.”

Die Skulpturenschau Bad RagARTz findet 2015 zum sechsten
Mal statt. Kunstschaffende aus aller Welt werden die Region
abermals zu einem Magneten für Freunde der Skulpturenkunst machen. Grosse Namen zeigen ihre Werke. Darunter
befinden sich David Bill, Robert Indermaur, Mimmo Paladino,
Jörg Plickat, Graziano Pompili, Kan Yasuda und viele mehr.
«Die Ausstellung möchte einen Leuchtturm in der Kunstwelt
setzen», sagt Kunstmäzen und Initiator Rolf Hohmeister aus
Bad Ragaz. Zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau Esther ist der Bad
Ragazer Arzt von Beginn an die treibende Kraft. Über eine
Million Besucher haben seit der 1. Schweizerischen Triennale der Skulpturen im Jahr 2000 den Weg in den Sarganserländer Kurort, ins liechtensteinische Vaduz und das Alte Bad
Pfäfers gefunden. Die Farbe Blau gibt den Ton an für die Triennale 2015. Das Blaue Gold, sprich das Thermalwasser, ist
Grundlage für alles Tun im Grand Resort. «Blau ist aber auch
die Farbe des Wassers und des Himmels. Blau ist die Farbe
des Friedens, der Jugend und der Zukunft», fügt Rolf Hohmeister hinzu.

time in 2015, when artists from all over the world will again
transform the region into a magnet for lovers of sculpture.
Significant names in the art world will be displaying their work,

“The exhibition aims to become a beacon of the art world,”
says patron of the arts and initiator Rolf Hohmeister from Bad
Ragaz. Together with his wife Esther, the Bad Ragaz doctor has
been the driving force right from the beginning. Over a million
visitors have made their way to the Sarganserland spa resort,
the Liechtenstein town of Vaduz and the Altes Bad Pfäfers
since the first Swiss Triennial Festival of Sculpture was held in
2000. At the 2015 event, the colour blue will set the tone. Blue
Gold – the thermal water – is the foundation that underlies all
activities at the Grand Resort. “Blue, however, is also the colour of water and the sky. Blue is the colour of peace, of youth
and of the future,” adds Rolf Hohmeister.

Wüst himself. They’re so easy to prepare that
they’re sure to be a success in the kitchen at

Nur mit sauberem Bio-Heu gelingt dieses Gericht. Auf
keinen Fall darf es normales, das heisst mit Dünger bearbeitetes Heu sein. Ich habe das Emd, welches wir in unserer
Resort-Küche verwenden, selbst auf der «Planka» in Vättis
geheut. Jedes Jahr lege ich mir einen Vorrat von zwei Jutesäcken für unsere Hotelküche an. In Vättis bewirtschaften
Freunde von mir ein Maiensäss auf 1200 Metern Höhe. Sie
zeigen mir, wo es die besten Kräuter und Alpenblumen gibt.
Von dort, und nur von dort, hole ich mein Heu für die Vättner
Heusuppe. Aber nicht nur das Bergheu ist vom Bauern, auch
alle weiteren Zutaten für die Komposition dieser raffinierten
Kartoffelsuppe beziehen wir von Bauern aus der Region.
This recipe can only work with clean, organic hay. Normal,
that is, fertilised hay must not be used here. The hay we use in
our resort kitchen is harvested by me on the ‘Planka’ in Vättis.
Every year I set aside two jute sacks for our hotel kitchen.
Friends of mine in Vättis cultivate a mountain pasture at an altitude of 1,200 metres, and they show me where to find the
best herbs and alpine flowers. There, and only there, I collect
my hay for the Vättner Heusuppe. But not only the mountain
hay comes from the farmer, all the other ingredients used in
this sophisticated potato soup also come from farmers in the
region.

• Chop onions, leek and celeraic into small dices
• Peel and slice potatoes
• Sauté the vegetables and potatoes in butter
• Add the hot stock and season
• Bring to the boil and skim off any scum
• Simmer for approx. 30 minutes
• Blend and strain
• Bring to the boil again, season and add cream
• If the soup is too thin, bind with a little cornflour
• Add the hay to the hot soup
• Allow to infuse for 20 seconds (must not boil)
• Pour soup through a fine sieve
• Foam briefly with a hand blender

Früchten, sind herrliche Appetizer. In Shots abgefüllt sind sie
ein Blickfang auf jedem Buffet. Klein, augenfällig, liebevoll
zubereitet und temperamentvoll im Geschmack - wer könnte
da schon nein sagen? Das Rezept für die rote Thai-Currysuppe habe ich 2009 von meinen Auslandreisen mitgebracht.
Damals erkundete ich während Monaten ausgiebig die Vielfalt der asiatischen und arabischen Küchen. Von der thailändischen Küche war ich besonders angetan. Inspirationen aus
Thailand habe ich nach meiner Rückkehr umgehend in unserem asiatischen Restaurant Namun – das so viel wie warmes
Wasser bedeutet – umgesetzt.

appetisers. They are a showstopper at every buffet, served in
their little shot glasses. Small, striking, lovingly prepared and

soup back from my travels in 2009, having spent months exploring the diversity of Asian and Arabic cuisine. I was particularly excited about Thai cuisine, and on my return I immediately incorporated a great deal of my inspiration from Thailand

Sie expandieren nicht, könnten aber. Sie streben nicht nach der maximalen Umsatzkurve,
könnten aber. Sie sind mehr als erfolgreich
und bleiben dennoch, wer sie sind. Die Donatschs – Bündner Winzer mit einer Botschaft
im Bouquet.
Malans ist weder noch, weder Nebelnorden noch Mittelmeersüden. Malans liegt in einer Kurve an den Berghang gebettet und ist bestimmt eines: vom Sonnengott auserkoren.
Gleich links vom Weindorf in der Bündner Herrschaft zweigt
der Besucher von Norden her kommend ins Prättigau ab, ansonsten braust er mit dem Auto Richtung Chur, durch den
San-Bernardino-Tunnel ins Tessin und vielleicht noch weiter

Doch ein ordentliches Zeitfenster für den Pinot noir der
Herrschäftler Winzer – der kleinen Gegend mit den grossen
Weinen – sollte man sich unbedingt freihalten. Die Rebhänge

Malans has a geography all of its own; neither located in the fog
of the north nor the Mediterranean south, it lies nestled on the
curve of a mountain side. But one thing can be said for sure: it
has been blessed by the sun god. Directly to the left of the
wine-producing village in the Bündner Herrschaft, visitors travelling from the north either turn off on their way to Prättigau or
rush past in their cars towards Chur, through the San Bernardino tunnel to Ticino and perhaps even further south into Italy.

Whatever their end destination, visitors should really leave sufficient time to experience the Pinot noir of the wine makers of
the Bündner Herrschaft – a small region with great wines. The

was twice in succession named as world champion at the

the wine produced in my home region, the Bündner Herrschaft. There is no other place that I would rather live or work”,
he says with a sparkle in his eyes.

Der Rebberg als Schule
Der Pinot-noir-Weltmeister ist Winzer in fünfter Generation.
«Eine Last ist das nicht. Es erfüllt mich eher mit Ehrfurcht, als
dass ich Druck verspüre», bekennt er. Bei Donatschs war das
schon immer so. Von den jeweils zwei Söhnen wurde der
eine Lehrer, der andere Winzer. Über Generationen. So blieb
das 1926 erbaute Gasthaus «Zum Ochsen» an der Sternengasse immer im Besitz der Familie. Im Untergrund befinden
sich die jahrhundertealten Kellergewölbe, der Torkel mit der
Weinpresse, ein neuer Keller mit den aneinandergereihten
Barrique-Fässern sowie Räume zum Degustieren. Es ist fast
so, als hätte sich der alte, ehrwürdige «Ochsen» hüben und
drüben in der Tiefe der Sternengasse ein weiteres, gemäuertes Gasthaus einverleibt. Ein Ort für bekennende BacchusJünger, für Weinverliebte, Lebensgeniesser und Freunde kultivierten Seins.

maker. Like father, like son. Is this really the case? For both of
them, wine making is a passion, and they both also have a
great sense of tradition. While father Thomas avoids the limelight, son Martin is somewhat of a trendsetter. Donatsch is
looking forward to a good and perhaps even excellent 2014. In
mid-September, he and his wine-making colleagues from the
Bündner Herrschaft are gripped by the familiar tingling
sensation as expectations grow. In the meantime, those at the
“Ochsen” restaurant remain calm. Not even the föhn storms in
the Rhine Valley have ever really been able to fluster them.
The vineyard as a learning ground
The former Pinot noir world champion is a fifth-generation
wine maker. “This isn’t a burden. It fills me more with a sense
of awe than a feeling of being under pressure”, he confesses.
This has always been the case with the Donatsch family. Of
the two sons, one became a teacher, the other a wine maker.
It has been this way over generations. The “Zum Ochsen”
guest house, located on Sternengasse and constructed in
1926, has thus always been under the ownership of the family.
Below ground, the centuries-old cellar vaults, the wine cellar
(“Torkel”) with the wine press, a new cellar housing the linedup oak wine barrels and rooms for tasting the products can be
found. It is almost as if the old, venerable “Ochsen” had
annexed an additional brick guest house below the surface of
Sternengasse. A place for professed disciples of Bacchus,
wine enthusiasts, lovers of life and proponents of a cultured
existence.
The wines of the Donatsch vineyard can be found on the wine list at the
restaurants of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. These wines can be tasted and purchased at the “Zum Ochsen” wine parlour in Malans.

Vor exakt 150 Jahren kamen die ersten Wintergäste nach Graubünden. Sie kurten in Davos
und räkelten sich an der St. Moritzer Sonne.
Der Wintersport in der Schweiz erlebte seine
Geburtsstunde.
Exactly 150 years ago, the first winter visitors
came to Graubünden to take a cure in Davos
and stretch out in the St. Moritz sun. Winter
sports in Switzerland had now been born.
Im Winter 2014/15 feiern der Kanton Graubünden und die
Schweiz 150 Jahre Wintertourismus. Engadin St. Moritz und
Davos Klosters gehören zu den Pionier-Destinationen. Einst
waren es kleine Bergdörfer, die unter ihrer Abgelegenheit in
den alpinen Hochtälern litten. Heute sind es leuchtende Kristalle im Schweizer Tourismus.
In winter 2014/2015 the canton of Graubünden and Switzerland are celebrating 150 years of winter tourism. Engadin
St. Moritz and Davos Klosters were among the pioneering
destinations, having once, as small mountain villages, suffered
as a result of their remoteness in the high alpine valleys. Today,
they are the sparkling crystals of Swiss tourism.
Der Bergsonne entgegen
Der St. Moritzer Hotelier Johannes Badrutt schloss im Herbst
1864 mit sechs Gästen aus England eine Wette ab. Er lud sie
ein, Weihnachten in seinem Hotel zu verbringen und versprach ihnen, dass sie an den Weihnachtstagen bei Sonnenschein hemdsärmlig auf der Terrasse sitzen könnten. Sollte
er unrecht haben, so würde er ihnen die Reisekosten von
London nach St. Moritz zurückerstatten. Die Engländer nahmen die Einladung an, vergnügten sich prompt an der Bündner Sonne und verliessen das Engadiner Hochtal erst wieder
an Ostern 1865. Schnell machte die Geschichte unter dem
englischen Adel die Runde. In der Folge kamen immer mehr
Towards the mountain sun
The St. Moritz hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a bet in autumn
1864 with six guests from England. He invited them to spend
Christmas at his hotel and promised them that they would be
able to sit outside on the terrace in their shirtsleeves in the
sunshine over the holidays. If he turned out to be wrong, he
would reimburse them their travel costs from London to
St. Moritz. The English travellers took up his invitation, enjoying the Graubünden sun and ultimately remaining at the hotel
until Easter 1865. The story quickly made the rounds of the
English aristocracy. Increasing numbers of guests proceeded
to come from abroad. Elegant and sophisticated – cosmopol-

Gäste aus dem Ausland. Elegant und weltgewandt – das
mondäne St. Moritz ward geboren. Erst mit der Erschliessung der Alpen gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts begann die
Geschichte des Tourismus in der Schweiz. Das Alpenland mit
seinen unzähligen Tälern und Bergen galt bis anhin als
unwirtlich und unzugänglich. Die Reise- und Abenteuerlust
ausländischer Gäste blieb zunächst einer kleinen, wohlhabenden Elite vorbehalten. Doch war es ihr Sturm der Begeisterung für die Berge – der nicht selten auch Eingang in die
Weltliteratur fand –, der den Grundstein für das heutige Gastland Schweiz bildete.
Kuren im Freien
Am 8. Februar 1865 trafen in Davos die ersten Wintergäste
ein. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt war die heutige «höchstgelegene Stadt Europas» auf 1560 Meter über Meer nur als Sommer-Höhenkurort bekannt. An jenem Tag bestiegen zwei
Kurgäste aus Deutschland die Kutsche vor dem Rathaus. Einen Teil ihrer Höhenkur hielten sie schon bald auf mit Heu
belegten Holzschlitten im Freien ab. Nur kurze Zeit später
konnte man sie bereits beim munteren Schlittschuhlaufen
auf dem Davosersee beobachten. Der eine der beiden, ein
Arzt, wirkte nach seiner vollständigen Genesung über 20 Jahre in Davos. Der andere heiratete eine Davoserin, führte mit
ihr eine bekannte Pension und übersiedelte seine Verlagsge-
itan St. Moritz was born. It was not until the Alps started to
become popular with visitors towards the end of the 18th century that the story of tourism in Switzerland took off. The alpine landscape, with its countless valleys and mountains, had
previously been considered as inhospitable and inaccessible.
The passion for travel and adventure felt by foreign guests was
initially limited to a small, wealthy elite. But it was their storm
of enthusiasm for the mountains – which frequently also found
its way into world literature – that laid the foundations for
Switzerland’s role as a tourist destination.
Taking a cure in the open air
The first winter guests arrived in Davos on 8 February 1865.
Up until this point, today’s “highest city in Europe” at
1,560 metres above sea level was known only as a summer
high-altitude health resort. On this day, two visitors from Germany climbed into the carriage in front of the town hall. They
were soon spending part of their high-altitude cure out of
doors on wooden sledges covered with hay, and just a short
time later they were to be seen ice skating cheerfully on Lake
Davos. One of the two, a doctor, spent over 20 years working
in Davos once his recuperation was complete. The other one
married a lady from Davos, ran a renowned boarding house
with her and relocated his publishing businesses from Germany to his new place of residence. The mountain village subse-

“Diversity is
our livelihood”
Snow is a resource for Switzerland. Without it there
would be no winter tourism, which in turn is a vital
economic factor for our small country in the heart of
Europe. As a winter sports fanatic I know most of the
ski resorts in the alpine region, and I am therefore
not surprised why so many visitors come to us. The
runs are challenging and varied and the pistes are
extremely well prepared, and we also offer the
highest standards off the pistes. If I decide to switch
to cross-country skiing one day, I’ll have a hard time
deciding where to do it, because with almost
1,000 kilometres of runs there are so many different
options available, depending on how I feel on the
day, and all of them in a spectacular landscape. We
also have plenty to offer to those who are not lovers
of winter sports, with many hiking paths and small
welcoming restaurants for recharging along the way.
Graubünden is not only highly diverse when it comes
to landscape, however, but also in terms of language
and culture. Painters, philosophers and composers
have spent time here over the centuries, and their
work has helped to communicate the appeal of
Graubünden all over the world. Our competence in
the diversity and quality of tourism is also our nerve
centre, as more than half of the value added is
created here. It’s our livelihood, pure and simple. I’m
already looking forward to the pistes in Savognin,
especially to Laritg, a north-facing slope where no
artificial snow is used and which is often covered in
powder right up to February.

Schnee ist eine Ressource für die Schweiz. Ohne ihn
gäbe es keinen Wintertourismus. Dieser wiederum
ist ein nicht mehr wegzudenkender Wirtschaftsfaktor

Schneesportfanatiker kenne ich die meisten Skigebiete im Alpenraum und bin deshalb nicht überrascht, warum so viele Gäste zu uns kommen. Die
Abfahrten sind anspruchsvoll und vielseitig, die
Pisten bestens präpariert und auch abseits der
Pisten bieten wir den höchsten Standard. Sollte ich
mich mal fürs Langlaufen entscheiden, fällt mir die
Standortwahl schwer. Denn mit nahezu 1000 Kilometern Loipe gibts Möglichkeiten für jede Tagesform,
jede Lust und Laune und dies überall in wunderschöner Landschaft. Nicht alle frönen dem Schneesport,
doch auch für die haben wir etwas zu bieten. Die
vielen Wanderwege mit den kleinen Beizen laden zu
Gemütlichkeit ein. Graubünden hat aber nicht nur
landschaftlich eine enorme Vielfalt zu bieten, auch
sprachlich und kulturell. So haben über Jahrhunderte
Maler, Philosophen und Komponisten hier gewirkt
und mit ihren Werken den touristischen Glanz Graubündens in die Welt getragen. Unsere Kompetenz in
Vielfalt und Qualität des Tourismus ist auch unser
Lebensnerv, denn mehr als die Hälfte der Wertschöpfung wird damit erzielt. Es ist unsere Lebensgrundlage schlechthin. So freue ich mich schon
heute auf die Skipisten in Savognin. Ganz besonders
auf Laritg, einen Nordhang, der nicht beschneit wird
und oft bis im Februar Pulverschnee bietet.

erstrahlt das neue Schneesportgebiet ArosaLenzerheide in voller Pracht. Vom Grand

the new winter sport resort Arosa-Lenzerheide

40 years, and in January 2014 it was time: the two renowned
holiday destinations opened the link to their respective ski resorts and celebrated the creation of the biggest interconnected skiing region in Graubünden. At the heart of the link

The two designer gondolas with a capacity of
150 people each cover the 1.7 kilometres between the Urdenfürggli and Aroser Hörnli at an

175 years of thermal water
Tief in der wildromantischen Taminaschlucht
schlägt das Herz des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz: die unerschöpfliche Quelle, aus der seit
Jahrhunderten das heilende, körperwarme
Thermalwasser sprudelt. Das Blaue Gold verbindet in Bad Ragaz Wellbeing und Gesundheit auf eine einzigartige Weise. Am 31. Mai
1840 wurde die vier Kilometer lange Wasserleitung vom Alten Bad Pfäfers bis zum «Hof
Ragaz» eröffnet. Seither fliesst das körperwarme Wasser von
exakt 36.5° C direkt nach Bad Ragaz. Wir laden Sie ein, mehr
über die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Gemeinde Bad Ragaz zu erfahren und mit uns im Jahr 2015 das Jubiläum «Bad
Ragaz feiert 175 Jahre Thermalwasser» zu erleben.
