Summer 2010 - Hawaiian Humane Society
HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY Newsletter June-August 2010 2010 legislative victories Legislators said yes to better standards for pets at home. We anticipate that Governor Lingle will sign a bill this summer that will set minimum standards for pet housing. Provisions include giving pets a solid surface, as well as ample room to stand and turn around in, whether it’s a crate, dog house, birdhouse or other enclosure. Best of all, the Humane Society can require pet owners to provide veterinary care in order to prevent pets from suffering. This victory is the result of a task force that convened for several months and was led by the Humane Society. Likely to be the first law of its kind in the world, Hawaii’s shark protection bill bans the capture of sharks within three miles of the shoreline. It also prohibits the sale, possession and distribution of shark fins, which are used in specialty dishes. Shark finning is a common practice in which fishermen capture millions of these ocean creatures, remove their fins and abandon them in the ocean to drown. Considered cruel and inhumane, the Humane Society and its advocates fought for this bill’s passage. Legislators also dismissed a misguided resolution that aimed to recognize cockfighting as a cultural practice. Cockfighters insisted that it was their native right to fight claiming its cultural significance in Hawaii and the Philippines. In fact, we spoke to the office of the Consulate General of the Philippines in Hawaii who stated that “cockfighting is not recognized as a national sport in the Philippines.” King Kalakaua outlawed cockfighting in the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1884 because it was cruel. In truth, the resolution was an attempt to undermine Hawaii’s animal cruelty law and disregard the majority of citizens, states and countries that view cockfighting as inhumane and a crime. Razor sharp metal knives are attached to the legs of the birds to maim or kill each other for gambling. In the United States, cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states, and in 39 of them, it is a felony. Call 356-2247 to help with future advocacy initiatives. Pets prefer to share their lives indoors with you. President’s Message Keep your donation local at the Hawaiian Humane Society Pamela Burns has served as the Hawaiian Humane Society President and CEO since 1990. One of the biggest challenges the Hawaiian Humane Society faces as a local, private non-profit organization is making sure our friends know how we’re funded. Many caring animal lovers mistakenly make donations to large Mainland groups such as the east coast-based Humane Society of the United States and ASPCA, thinking it helps Oahu’s animals in need. The truth is that we don’t receive a penny from mainland-based animal welfare organizations. If you really want to help animals in your community, give to the Hawaiian Humane Society directly so that Oahu’s pets and people can benefit from your generosity. We hope you enjoy this newsletter that showcases just a few of our many great initiatives, programs and services that make a difference. Much of our work is made possible by those who simply enclose a donation in the envelope found in each edition of our newsletter. Conviction won for neglected horses The Humane Society’s role in caring for Oahu’s animals dates back to 1897. One of our great champions, Lucy Ward, took to the streets on horseback, carrying a bullwhip and pistol to help rescue animals. As one of our first humane agents, she even launched manhunts for owners of abused horses. We still protect our equine friends today and a 2010 conviction resulted in one of the stiffest penalties in recent history by Hawaii’s courts. In April, a Waikele man was charged with eight cruelty citations by the Humane Society when eight horses were found dehydrated near an old abandoned military water tower that was no longer in use. Upon closer look, several empty troughs were found with dirt lining the bottoms and sides – indicating a lack of fresh water for a long period. With the assistance of the Honolulu Fire Department, the horses were provided 300 gallons of water by tanker truck. Another 580 gallons were Pamela Burns President & CEO Jacque LeBlanc Editor Published quarterly by the Hawaiian Humane Society. 2700 Waialae Avenue Honolulu, Hawaii 96826 Phone (808) 946-2187 Fax (808) 955-6034 www.hawaiianhumane.org On Oahu, the Hawaiian Humane Society is the only animal welfare organization that shelters, rescues, adopts and welcomes animals. 100% of donations stays in the islands for the benefit of Hawaii’s animals and people. The owner pled no contest to the charges and was ordered to pay $1,000 in fines and $450 in court fees. He also agreed to quarterly inspections by the Humane Society and received one-year probation. Protecting and serving Oahu’s animals, the Hawaiian Humane Society is the only animal rescue and investigation team in partnership with HPD. Pets left outside in a fenced yard can panic, escape and get lost, or become injured. Ensure your cats, dogs and rabbits have a microchip and that your contact information is current with us. Call 3562229 during weekdays or email cnakamura@hawaiianhumane. org. Lost and found reports need to be filed immediately. You Made it Happen A gift in your will supports rescues Our work to help animals is a passionate part of our mission. We devote as much as it takes to save lives and rescue animals. Few realize how much it actually costs. Hoku of Kalihi is a dog that’s an escape artist. Reported lost in November, the Humane Society’s rescue workers searched high and low for six months. Meanwhile, several reports from tourists cited a dog living on the steep slopes of the Pali Lookout and being fed by tour bus drivers. After several attempts that involved three Humane Society rescuers scaling the lookout, the dog was captured and, thanks to a microchip, she was identified as Hoku of Kalihi. Cost of this rescue? $2,500. The joy of rescues is priceless but your donations help foot the bill. Friends like Kuniko Tsujimoto know that caring for animals costs a lot. Her life’s passion was caring for homeless cats in her neighborhood. The Mililani resident made it her personal mission to tend to cats abandoned near her home at Cathedral Point condo. She left $10,000 in her will for the Humane Society to work with her condo association to provide care for the beloved cat colony that gave her life meaning. Her wishes were fulfilled and her generosity has left a legacy of caring that helps fund rescues and aid for animals in need. Free pet food for those in need During hard economic times, food for Fido or Fluffy can truly be a hardship for some pet owners. The Humane Society has launched a program to assist pet owners with free food for those with pets in need. Pet food will be provided as 4 available. First priority is to help those on any form of government assistance including the unemployed and homeless. You can help! Animal lovers can support this program by donating dry pet food to the Hawaiian Humane Society or PETCO in Kapolei or Pearl City. Pet food for all ages can include dog biscuits. Bags should be free from rips or tears and must be unexpired and unopened. For more information about this program, contact Bianca Trombi, Outreach Coordinator, at 356-2217 or [email protected]. A best friend to the animals Animal lover Norman Noguchi serves as Vice Chair of the Humane Society’s board of directors. As president and COO of Marcus & Associates, Norman runs a full-service real estate company by day. By night, he and his wife Ann share their home and lives with five cats! Norman’s love for his own pets has inspired a love for all animals; and his contributions to the Humane Society are many. He’s personally a major donor and has served as a past chair for our Tuxes & Tails fundraiser. His company also takes a leadership role in PetWalk. His prowess for rallying his staff to unite as a PetWalk team and collect donations with dogged determination has helped raise thousands of dollars over the years.
