Winter 2009 - Hawaiian Humane Society
HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY Newsletter December 2009 Homeless woman gives cats to the Humane Society for a better life In February 2009, a highly publicized case involved a Kakaako homeless woman who keeps cats and rabbits in kennels in shopping carts sparked a great deal of media attention. In October, more than 20 animals were given by the cat owner to the Humane Society so they could be placed with families. “This is one of our highest profile cases and we’ve received many heated complaints from the public wanting us to seize her animals and charge her with cruelty,” says Keoni Vaughn, Field Services Manager. “Although the conditions weren’t ideal, they weren’t illegal. We’re just grateful that she finally trusts us enough to give us the animals so they can live better lives.” For years, the Society’s officers met with her on a weekly basis to monitor care, educate about ideal Officers Rob Church and Vernon Ling worked to offer homeless woman’s cats a better life. standards, and foster a trusting relationship. This is still an open investigation and the Humane Society continues to work with her to ensure humane care for the animals she still has. We keep your telephone number and your address on file so that lost pets that arrive to us can find their way home again. If you’ve moved, changed telephone numbers, or your pet has passed away or been given away, contact us at 3562229. Call now and ensure your pet is always wearing ID and has a microchip. If you’ve lost a pet, you can send us a photo and complete a lost report at hawaiianhumane.org. If you’ve found a stray animal, let us know right away and submit a photo so we can help you find the owner. The days following New Year’s Eve are the Society’s busiest for lost and found when fireworks and festivities can frighten pets. This year’s report showcases heroic animal rescues, new laws passed, our most generous funders, as well as our annual statistics of adoptions and more. this mission is finding new families for unwanted, orphaned pets. The Society found new homes for 5,900 animals this year. Contact 356-2229 or cnakamura@ hawaiianhumane.org to receive a copy by mail. The Society’s promotion of pet adoptions has never been more aggressive. In 2009, we launched a new feature on our website that showcases nearly all animals seeking homes. We partnered with PETCO to adopt animals through their Kapolei location and are there every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A wide selection of dogs, cats and rabbits is available throughout the week. Creating families and moving towards zero euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. Every year, the Humane Society works tireless to save animals’ lives through rescues, lost and found and adoption. Critical to This year we’re pleased to share with you that euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals is less than 1 percent. We Homeless from page 1 Some residents have been angered by the woman’s caging of her animals, which spurred a push for stronger laws about confining animals in Hawaii. The Hawaiian Humane Society did not support such legislation that would have statewide impact, be largely unenforceable and designed around one specific and unusual case. Hawaiian Humane Society is convening with other animal welfare groups including neighbor island humane societies, veterinarians and pet shops to address standards for confining pets at home—specifically caging cats and dogs that are left tied up for most of their lives. In 2010, the committee’s recommendations will be presented to the Legislature. 2 find more new families for homeless animals than all other shelters combined on Oahu. There is no time limit on how long we’ll hold an animal for adoption. We can only hope that more people will choose adoption. Our commitment to spay and neuter helps us dramatically reduce euthanasia on Oahu. Feral cats represent our largest percentage of animals euthanized. If every pet owner and those feeding feral cats made it their personal mission to care for these animals and use our free spay and neuter services, together, we could reduce euthanasia and prevent unwanted litters. Funded completely by donations, more than 2,300 feral cats were sterilized this year. At less than half his ideal weight, he now resides with a Humane Society foster care family to restore his health. The owner has been charged with animal cruelty. “This has been one of the worst cases I’ve seen of intentional starvation of a pet,” says Humane Society president and ceo Pamela Burns. “While we’re pleased that the owner surrendered the dog to us so that we can nurse him back to health and find him a loving home, justice needs to be served to ensure that this owner understands that cruelty is a serious crime.” Humane Society offers innovative volunteerism On a regular basis, hundreds of volunteers find and share joy by giving their time and talents to the Hawaiian Humane Society. Volunteers help walk dogs, socialize cats, groom pets and more to the tune of 85,531 hours of service in 2009 in every area of our work. Here are two new, noteworthy programs. Students, 14 and older, can join our volunteer workforce and spend Furry Furlough Friday with us. Hands-on work include an exciting array of jobs at the shelter from caring for animals to helping in the office. Call 356-2216 or email [email protected]. The Humane Society has also launched a new mentorship program in which our most experi4 enced volunteers help to train new recruits. The mentor group has expanded animal handling where new volunteers not only learn through hands-on experience, but they also work a shift immediately following the training. “I think this is a great opportunity for us to work with new volunteers to provide them with a meaningful volunteer experience,” said Steven Prieto, a member of the Society’s volunteer mentor group who has years of experience working with volunteers. “We feel that this provides volunteers with the knowledge they need to be successful and leads to a longer, lasting relationship between the Hawaiian Humane Society and our volunteers.” Humane Society assists with Missouri dog fighting rescue Hawaiian Humane Society cares for animals near and far. Field Services Manager Keoni Vaughn and Humane Investigator Rob Church spent 10 days in St. Louis, Missouri helping more than 500 fighting dogs that were rescued in July. Bred and raised for aggression, the dogs required extremely cautious handling with partitions placed between kennels so they could not see each other. Only one dog was allowed out at a time to prevent fighting. The animals were sheltered in a top-secret location in the business industrial district of St. Louis. Both worked for eight days straight at the shelter. “It was some of the hardest work of my life,” said Officer Church. “We just didn’t know what the outcome would be for these animals, so it was an honor to make a difference in their lives where we could.” Field Services Manager Keoni Vaughn (right) and Humane Investigator Rob Church (left) spent 10 days in St. Louis, Missouri helping more than 500 The animals were part of the nation’s largest dog fighting dogs that were rescued in July. fighting case in which federal agents made 26 arrests and dogs were rescued in eight states. During the Society’s early years, child welfare was as much a concern as animal welfare. Here’s an excerpt from our archives about our work in 1910. “…a mother, aged 26, who has given birth to three sets of children, all of whom remained in her custody. A nurse found her very ill and destitute. Soon after the birth of a female child, the mother became paralyzed, one side being entirely disabled. Her children including a baby a few weeks old have been adopted and placed with respectable families...another mother has beaten her little boy cruelly and been issued a warning that should it happen again, the case will be taken to court…” 5 PetWalk 2009 raised the woof PetWalk in October 2009 raised more than $130,000 and thousands of new friends. The Society sells them gift wrapped! Calendars are $12 each at these participating retailers across Oahu: Alli Way, Bark Avenue, Borders at Ward Center, Haiku Veterinary Clinic, King Street Pet Hospital, Makai Animal Clinic, Ohana Doggie Daycare, Pacific Paws, Pet’s Discount, Sanrio Surprises and Tails of Hawaii. Gentle Leads Toss out your dog’s choke chain and enjoy the benefits of stress-free walks thanks to the gentle leader. Designed so that owners can communicate with their pet in a way they instinctively understand, the device painlessly and effectively removes the dog’s natural tendency to pull by eliminating uncomfortable pressure on the throat. Renew for the New Year! A current dog license proves legal ownership of your canine companion. Many licenses are due to expire on Dec. 31 and can be renewed at any satellite city hall or at the Humane Society for as low as $10 for spayed or neutered dogs. A license helps us return lost dogs to their owners and is valid for two years. Sit & Stay Kitty! Did you know that many of the cats for adoption that are 6 months or older are taught how to sit? Using positive reinforcement, clicker training and treats, we can teach cats the same way that we teach dogs. Cats are intelligent, personable and trainable. We encourage those adopting cats to continue to engage their new pets with training including teaching them how to walk on a leash to reduce boredom and strengthen their bond with their new pets. For a limited time, the Humane Society offers a 2-for-1 cat adoptions special where you can adopt two for the price of one. 8 Fat Cats & Top Dogs Thank you to our very special circle of friends!
