Fall 2011 - Hawaiian Humane Society
Hawaiian Humane Society Newsletter September - November 2011 More furry friends find homes Innovative promotions, coupled with ambitious expansion, meant a banner year for adoptions. In total, 6,734 animals were placed with new families from July 2010 through June 2011. National studies have revealed that adoption price in a downturned economy can affect the volume of adoptions but does not affect a family’s commitment to provide a home for life. Photo by Wag and Snap Photography This year we wrestled with an increase in homeless animals and offered our most creative promotions to prevent a decrease in adoptions. Free over (age) 3. Fifty percent off. Pick Your Pet & Pick Your Price. Valentine’s Day Doggie Speed Dating in the Park. Priceless Pets. You name it – we did it this year. Adoptions were free on many occasions and donations paid for the more than $250 in services that we invest in every animal. You made it happen! Did you know? Humane Society cats and dogs will be available for adoption: Sunday, September 18 11 am - 1 pm Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford A record-breaking 2,646 cats found new families. In addition to adopting out felines from the shelter, we team up with PETCO Kapolei to adopt out Humane Society cats every day. Many felines have also found new homes at several adoptions events from military bases to Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford. At a recent “Adopt a Pet” event at the auto dealership, seven cats found new Continued on page 4 Photo by Wag and Snap Photography Rescued Waianae dogs get new start In June, the Humane Society embarked on a rescue mission in waist-high grass in the thick of the night searching for dogs in distress. Ten dogs were discovered – one dead and nine starving and near death. They were rushed to intensive care. It all started when a concerned neighbor flagged down a humane investigator driving by. The neighbor said the owner of the dogs had been gone for nearly a month. We ensure that pets do not become neglected at home when people have no time or no way to care for them. Our passion helped us through and while staff and volunteers were pushed to their limits, we still managed to thrive. We were named one of “Hawaii’s Best Places to Work” in 2011. Photo by Wag and Snap Photography We also strengthened our resolve to find every healthy, adoptable animal a home. Nearly 2,000 animals were treated in foster care. Adoptions rose Photo by Wag and Snap Photography by 17%. In fact, 6,734 animals found new families this year – our highest number of adoptions since 2002. Volunteers spent more than 124,000 hours working side-by-side with us. That’s a 120% increase from the year prior. We are amazed at the generous spirit of donors, volunteers, businesses and welfare groups. We are helping more animals than ever before – in every Oahu community from Kapolei to Kahuku and Waimanalo to Waianae. I hope that you will walk with us on October 2 at PetWalk and step out in celebration of animal welfare in Hawaii. Rescued Waianae dogs get new start From page 1 dogs were found chained with no access to food or water. According to the owner, she had paid a teenager $20 to care for them. She was charged with six counts of animal cruelty and her case is pending in court. Fearful and shy, the dogs received life-saving medical treatments and were rehabilitated in foster care. All have since found homes through our adoptions program. Cost of this rescue was $10,000 and your most recent donation paid for it. 2 Photo by Wag and Snap Photography It’s A Date Visit hawaiianhumane.org to learn more. Kaneohe resident Sydney Kenny went to a recent adoptions event at the dealership looking for a puppy. She ended up falling in love with two kittens. McKenna’s has helped adopt out nearly 70 dogs through their events too. Adoptions programs aren’t the only way that many find the love of their life. Fostering cats and kittens is usually a short-term assignment, but some turn permanent. This year more than 40 felines have been adopted by their foster families. Dog adoptions totaled 3,480 and every single canine had a special story. When we received a dog in distress call, investigators Cori Thom and Vernon Ling hopped in their rescue trucks and headed for Waimanalo. They found three dogs chained with no food or water, one of which was severely emaciated with masking tape binding her muzzle. The owner claimed the tape was used to train her to keep off the grass. He had left her muzzle bound for 10 hours. Nine is loving life and getting spoiled by her new family. Our officers negotiated the dog’s surrender and she was brought in to our care. After intensive foster care, she was adopted by the Langan family of Honolulu. Her new family, who named her Nine, can’t say enough good things about her. “She’s the most special, gentle dog I’ve ever known,” said John Langan. “She’s just a sweetheart and everyone who meets her loves her.” Cats and dogs weren’t the only stars of our adoptions efforts. In fact, 608 animals of other types found homes. The 250-pound pig that took up residence in our puppy pen for two weeks found a family in Waianae and has become a spoiled celebrity in her neighborhood. They all found their way to our openadmission shelter. As an amnesty drop off site, we welcome illegal, exotic animals and owners can surrender them to us instead of releasing them in our neighborhoods. Our partnership with Animal Crime Stoppers generates tips to help find exotic and animals, and the State Department of Agriculture serves as our partner for re-homing. Teen program ignites activism Have fun. Help Animals. Create change. These were the goals of nearly 60 teens who participated in the six-week Teens 4 Animals Summer Experience program. Students took signs to the streets for roadside rallies. They took lei and adoption messages to retailers from Honolulu to Kailua. The teens also distributed education materials and pet food to Waimanalo’s homeless families. “I never could have imagined when the program started that we would reach out to the homeless,” said Amanda Tsuhako, a 2011 Iolani graduate. “Teens 4 Animals combined my readiness to volunteer and, of course, my love for animals.” Students saw the pain and suffering of dogs kept in puppy mills and used their compassion to create videos and Facebook messages to educate their friends. They also protested the use of wild animals by the entertainment industry. Teen volunteer Diana Tran puts her new training skills to work. “After taking this course, I want to help educate teens about humane awareness and the human animal bond,” said Carly Nitta, a Waianae High School senior and Waianae Coast Teen Advisory Panel member. Calling all Windward Teens! The Hawaiian Humane Society needs members for its teen advisory panel. Members will earn community service hours and help Waimanalo animals. The public is invited to the teens’ first event, a pet blessing from 10 am – 1 pm on Saturday, September 17 at the Waimanalo District Park. Call Ronda at 356-2247 or visit hawaiianhumane.org for more information. Carrie Puzal and Carly Nitta lead the pack for a roadside rally in Kailua. 5 Join our cause by stepping out for the animals Celebrate pets and people for the Humane Society’s 21st Annual PetWalk on October 2 at Magic Island. Studies have shown that interacting with animals can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels and feelings of loneliness. ” – Francie Boland, Vice President of HMSA “ We’re so excited to participate in this entertaining event that brings so many pet lovers together to help such a worthwhile organization – the Hawaiian Humane Society. GumBone, the fun treat, is thrilled to be a part of PetWalk! ” – Dave Pang, Ilio Products partner and distributor of GumBone “ I support PetWalk and the other programs of the Hawaiian Humane Society because animals add so much to our lives. Animals are living creatures – they deserve to be treated humanely. I adopt all my dogs, and really believe in the mission of the Humane Society. PetWalk is one way that I can help to raise money to protect these animals. I have traveled the world, and as much as I enjoyed seeing the beautiful sights, nothing compared with the joy of coming home to the unconditional love of my dogs. They really touch my heart. Join me in helping the animals of Hawaii that need us! ” – Ginny Tiu 7 ” Pet-Wor thyproducts Hawaii’s Pets A spirited showcase of local pets, this gift book features the photography of Deb McGuire.
