Hawaiian Humane Society Newsletter June - August 2011 Puppy mill dogs get their first glimpse of hope In February, Hawaiian Humane Society got just the break it needed to rescue more than 150 dogs from a Waimanalo puppy mill. After nearly three years, the investigation was about to come to a head. That break came when the Honolulu Police Department was investigating a barking dog complaint and found animals in deplorable living conditions. Care had deteriorated to the point where the operator was irrefutably in violation of the law. A German shepherd had just given birth in a kennel with other dogs. She held her pup in her mouth desperately searching for a clean spot of concrete that wasn’t soiled in feces to lay her newborn. With overgrown coats, shih tzus and poodles dragged their matted hair across urine in their cramped housing. Water bowls were muddied with filth. Flies swarmed about unsanitary kennels. Continued on page 3 Frenzy for felines in June The Hawaiian Humane Society is infatuated with felines – which is perfect since June is Love-A-Cat month! To celebrate, Feline Fix returns on Sunday, June 12 as a one-day mass spay and neuter extravaganza with sterilizations at a rate of $10 per cat. Contact 356-2208 or [email protected] for reservations. Sponsored by your donations and Dr. Celina Hatt, a similar event was held in February with 93 cats spayed or neutered. “About 19 percent of Oahu residents own a cat and 17 percent are feeding a cat they don’t consider their own,” says Pamela Burns, Hawaiian Humane Society president and ceo. “The Humane Society urges cat owners to keep their felines indoors for their pet’s safety and to protect birds and other wildlife. Most importantly, all cats allowed outside – even those residents may be feeding but do not claim as their own – need to be sterilized.” In addition to Feline Fix, the Humane Society will offer 2-for-1 cat adoptions in June! And hundreds of supporters like you sent in donations. We couldn’t have rescued these animals and provided such lifesaving care without you. Cat reunited with family after 8 years lost When someone loses a pet who has wandered away, there is no greater grief than the unknown. Family reunions happen every day at the Humane Society – thanks to tiny microchips implanted under a pet’s skin. A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice with each containing a unique identification number that links a pet to its owner and is kept in a database maintained by the Humane Society. A nine-year old cat named Liesl found her way to the Humane Society just a week before Valentine’s Day. Her microchip connected us to her owner Carol Gessell who hadn’t seen Liesl in more than eight years. If your address or contact information has changed, download an update form from hawaiianhumane.org or call 356-2229 today. August is Microchip Madness Month All dogs and cats are invited to get a microchip for only $10 in August at participating veterinary clinics. Without a microchip, the rate of reunion for lost pets with their owners is 13 percent; with one, it’s 73! Carol searched tirelessly after Liesl was lost, posting flyers and urging the Humane Society to be on the lookout. She never lost hope and even posted a reward. Thankfully, Liesl had a microchip and the Humane Society was able to bring the two together once again. Visit hawaiianhumane.org for a list of clinics or call 356-2225. 2 Puppy mill From page 1 It took weeks for Humane Society cruelty case experts to painstakingly document the evidence and conditions for each animal, a case which is now in the hands of the Prosecutor’s office. “We’re confident that the evidence we have will secure a conviction,” says Keoni Vaughn, Humane Society’s director of operations and the case’s chief investigator. “There are standards of care that the law assures and that animals deserve. We hope our justice system will pursue penalties to the fullest extent of the law.” How much is that doggie in the window? Everyone agrees that puppies are priceless. But what price do their parents pay who may be living in a puppy mill? One way to find good breeders is through magazines such as Ilio, a local publication devoted to fanciers. A good breeder won’t sell to a pet shop because they care about who you are and want to Hawaii’s largest puppy mill rescue has put the spotlight on such operators to regulate them. Senate Bill 1522, introduced by Clayton Hee, would require large-scale breeders to provide humane care and treatment to their dogs, including sufficient food, water, veterinary care, shelter, space and exercise. It would also allow reasonable access for inspectors. The bill received tremendous support from all sectors of the community. Bills introduced this legislative session have been deferred to accommodate a sunrise provision, which will allow government agencies the necessary time to determine how to effectively establish regulation of these types of businesses. Mahalo to the many, caring veterinarians who helped with our puppy mill rescue Dr. Sheryl Doi Dr. Pauline Koreyasu Dr. Mellissa Yuen Dr. Lissa Kam Dr. Ann Sakamoto Dr. Shelby Goo Dr. Richard Fujie Dr. Eric Ako Dr. Leianne Lee Loy Dr. Dan Seversen Dr. Sue Sylvester-Palumbo 3 ensure their puppies are destined for a wonderful family and future. You also want to speak to others who have purchased animals from them and always inspect the living quarters of the pups’ parents. Good breeders will welcome your inquiries and are interested in you and your family. “There are many caring, responsible breeders. Operations like these can give good breeders a bad name,” says Pamela Burns, president and ceo of the Humane Society. “This bill is about big operations that have more animals than they can care for and what happens when profit becomes more important than an animal’s quality of life.” Tsunami scare warns pet owners to be ready This February’s tsunami scare was a good reminder to have a readiness plan for the entire family – including your pets. If your home isn’t safe for you, take your pet with you. Know where your nearest pet-friendly shelter is. As a back-up plan, arrange a safe haven with friends or family and designate a pet caregiver. Call 356-2223 to get our disaster readiness brochure for pet owners. Always have a 7-10 day supply of food and water on hand and a crate or carrier for each pet in which he can stand up and turn around in with ID card attached. A leash and collar with updated ID and license tags, as well as bedding, towels and toys are a few essentials to have ready to go. Japanese students learn about animals Just days before the tsunami hit Japan, students from Chiba Aiken Pet School attended a week-long class at the Hawaiian Humane Society. Students learned about humane values, animal care, rescues and more. As part of the Humane Society’s international education efforts, this was the 11th year Chiba Aiken students have come for training. Schools vie for animal welfare video award Young people used their voices (and their creative skills) to speak for the animals as part of Olelo’s Youth Xchange Student Video Competition. The dogs in care at the Humane Society have upgraded living quarters since February. Vinyl fencing now replaces the chain link in between kennels, which has dramatically impacted life for the dogs awaiting forever homes or those waiting to be reunited with their family. The solid fencing was installed to reduce barking and territorial behavior. Kennels also received a fresh coat of paint. All these upgrades were made possible by your most recent gift. This was the first year the Hawaiian Humane Society sponsored a category, made possible with a grant from the Reverend Takie Okumura Family Fund. More than 50 videos were entered in the Humane Ambassador category. Students created three to five minute public service announcements with a message that promoted the human-animal bond or the humane treatment of animals. Entries were judged on their accuracy, understanding of topic, creativity and quality of script, video, sound and production. Cats and dogs don’t sweat like humans do to cool down – dogs rely on panting and cats lick their fur. These methods aren’t always enough to chill them out so here are some tips to help your pet beat the heat: • Exercise your pet before 10 am or after 4 pm when it’s cooler and the sun’s rays aren’t as harsh. • Always have cool water accessible to keep pets hydrated with a shady spot to rest. Dogs love a small children’s pool. • Keep cats indoors in a cool space and keep them calm. • Head to the beach. Visit hawaiianhumane.org for a list conditioning; immersing him in cool (not cold) water or giving small amounts of cool water or ice cubes to lick; then visit a veterinarian right away. • Whether you’re headed to your favorite path or dog-friendly beach, never leave your pet in the car, where temperatures can escalate alarmingly fast. Some of the signs of heatstroke include hard panting, staggering, rapid heartbeat, lethargy, restlessness, bloodshot eyes, dark red or purple gums and/or tongue and vomiting. If you think your pet might be overheating try to gradually lower his body temperature by moving him to the shade or air Photo by Dana Edmunds for Hana Hou! Humane Society hosts cruelty experts The Humane Society’s humane investigators are a team of 13 officers. They are highly trained cruelty investigators, animal law experts and are deputized by the Honolulu Police Department. The Law Enforcement Training Institute from the University of Missouri hosted a week-long course on National Cruelty Investigations at the Humane Society. Twenty-five representatives attended 10 the class including Honolulu prosecutors, humane investigators and others in animal-related careers from Big Island, Maui, the U.S. mainland and Australia. The students learned a wide variety of skills ranging from animal law and courtroom preparation to animal nutrition and anatomy. Upon completion of the class and exam, the officers were certified Level I Animal Cruelty Investigators. Our mission is to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals. 19 2700 Waialae Avenue Honolulu, HI 96826 Non-Profit Org. US Postage PAID Honolulu, HI Permit No. 1004 hawaiianhumane.org Boots & Kimo’s doubles reward Rick and Jessie Kiakona, owners of Boots and Kimo’s Homestyle Kitchen in Kailua, doubled the reward for information about a cruelty investigation, bringing the total to $4,000. The dog had been beaten and left for dead near Kualoa Ranch. Special thanks to King Street Pet Hospital who provided for his care. Creative donation Tomomi Woo, a senior at Roosevelt High School, created 15 glazed ceramic tiles for display at the Humane Society with the help of her mentor, Jackie Mild Lau. The artwork on the tiles depicts the strength of the human-animal bond. Love for Hokget Nearly nine years after Hokget was rescued from an abandoned tanker ship, she still has faithful fans. One person touched by the dog’s story, Hwei-Shien Hahn, donated $1,000 to the Humane Society after visiting the famous pooch at her Ewa Beach home. Hokget was thrown into the spotlight in 2002 when she was left adrift in the Pacific Ocean for 24 days after a fire disabled the boat’s engine and the crewmen were rescued by a cruise ship, leaving Hokget behind. CFC gives to the animals Federal workers and military donated more than $32,000 to the Humane Society through the Combined Federal Campaign. Friend to the cats Charles Beeck, Jr., owner and president of Tropical Roofing and Raingutters, Inc., donated materials and manpower to build a muchneeded new roof for our Cat House.
