In the coming months you will be receiving more detailed information on the parish financials. In the meantime, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your generosity and support. It has been a challenging year for all of us, highlighted by a recession not seen in over 65 years. Many of us have struggled to make ends meet and our parish has not been immune. In order to operate within its financial means, the parish has kept its staff at a bare bones level and has only been able to maintain a minimum level of services with several staff members performing multiple roles. This parish has a long list of wonderful programs and ideas to improve our parish experience. Unfortunately, there is no money to bring these programs to fruition. As you know the mass collection plate is the primary revenue stream to cover the parish’s operating expenses. When the annual operating expenses exceed the amount brought in through the plate, the parish is forced to tap its cash reserves to cover the difference. That will be the case for the current financial year and marks the 2nd year in a row the parish has been forced to use its reserves. As a result, the amount of reserves remaining is equal to less than 2 years of operating expenses. This does not include annual increases in the cost of health insurance and cost of living for the parish staff. The church debt on the diocesan loan to cover the costs of renovating the church continues to take a large bite out of the parish funds, and will continue to do so through September 2023. Pledges from the capital campaigns to offset a portion of these costs have dwindled to almost zero, leaving the parish to cover almost 100% of the loan interest and principle out of its own funds – approximately $105,000 annually. Members of the Finance and Pastoral Councils, in conjunction with other Saint Lawrence parishioners, are discussing ways to bring in more money to the parish and you’ll be hearing more about this in the coming year. However, it all starts with us as parishioners to follow through on our commitment to stewardship as members of the Catholic faith. We have the ability as a community to make this parish stronger and more vibrant by our willingness to share our own individual gifts. Many of you have been able to maintain your level of stewardship through these difficult economic times and many have been forced to reduce the amount given. Whatever you can contribute is welcome and we sincerely thank you for your gift. If your situation allows, we ask that you consider increasing the amount of your current level of giving to allow the parish to serve your needs better. I’m confident that together we can succeed and help the parish reach a level of financial stability that will allow it to thrive and serve the community for years to come. I first came to Saint Lawrence in 1977 as parochial vicar and served until the year 2000 when I went to Rome to study canon law. God, faith sharing, scripture, social events, good times… Join us! In 2005, Father Andy Ligot was appointed pastor of Saint Lawrence. He then invited me to rent the Wilkiemeyer apartment and live on the property. Knowing that I would be going back to a familiar place and be with familiar people who loved me, I readily accepted the invitation. For almost five years, I have been privileged to join you in prayer and worship, in laughter and fun, in sorrow, and in joy. I have considered you all a wonderful, loving, and faith‐filled family in the Lord. I am sad that I am leaving, for yet a second time, a community that accepted me, nurtured me, inspired me, and loved me. And yet I am happy that I will now have an opportunity to lead a parish community that is known to be vibrant, loving, robust, and faith‐filled. The past seven years of ministry among our priests, deacons and seminarians as the Bishop’s vicar for clergy have also been a rewarding time in my life as a priest and I am thankful to Bishop McGrath for the trust he has given me to collaborate with him in nurturing our clergy. I wish to thank Fr. Thuc Si Ho and Father Ernesto Orci for the support and care they have extended to me this past year. I also wish to thank Fr. Andy Ligot, former pastor, for the invitation, the friendship and hospitality he has shown me during his tenure. To the staff of the Parish and the Education Center, to teachers and administrators, my deep gratitude for your support. The Galatians to whom the letter was addressed were Paul's converts, most likely among the descendants of Celts who had invaded western and central Asia Minor in the third century B.C. and had settled in the territory around Ancyra (modern Ankara, Turkey). Paul had passed through this area on his second (Acts 16:6) a n d a g ain o n h i s th ird ( A ct s 1 8 : 2 3 ) missionary journey. When Paul learned of the situation, he wrote this defense of his apostolic authority and of the correct understanding of the faith. He set forth the unique importance of Christ and his redemptive sacrifice on the cross, the freedom that Christians enjoy from the old burdens of the law, the total sufficiency of Christ and of faith in Christ as the way to God and to eternal life, and the beauty of the new life of the Spirit. Galatians is thus a summary of basic Pauline theology. Its themes were more fully and less polemically developed in the Letter to the Romans. The principal divisions of the Letter to the Galatians are the following: I. Address (Gal 1:1-5) II. Loyalty to the Gospel (Gal 1:6-10) III. Paul's Defense of His Gospel and His Authority (Gal 1:11-2:21) IV. Faith and Liberty (Gal 3:1-4:31) V. Exhortation to Christian Living (Gal 5:1-6:10) VI. In the past few years, Ann and I have visited Boston, walked the Freedom Trail, visited Lexington and Concord (the shot heard around the world), and visited Philadelphia including the Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. I think we lose something in California, both being a state that was not involved in the start of the country, and not being able to see first hand, and often, how “real” it all was. It’s not just an “interesting story” in a book. In today’s terminology, it was a conflict between a first world superpower – a colonial “steward” - and an oppressed and exploited third world population. In sports, (almost) everybody loves an underdog. In sports analogies, we were the New York Jets in the 1969 Super Bowl (Jets 16 – Colts 7) and the New York Mets in the 1969 World Series, defeating the Baltimore Orioles in seven games. Both teams were very young and heavily favored to lose. Because of their youth, it might be said that they were too young or too stupid to know they were supposed to lose … maybe both! Our forefathers risked everything including their life for justice. In Boston, one can visit the Town Hall where the Boston Tea Party was planned, visit the site of the Boston Massacre and the cemeteries, and see the graves of John Hancock, John Adams, Paul Revere and Crispus Attucks (a black man who was the first person killed in the Boston Massacre), and end the walk at Bunker Hill. It is so easy to lose yourself in history. In a larger picture, we can see a group of colonies who shared a common bond of oppression and exploitation, and formed extended political communities to focus on a clear mission which was the start of the United States as we know it today … history records that the underdog won! Reflection: Our forefathers made a huge commitment to justice as they understood it. Think back in your life: what is the biggest commitment to justice that you have made, and why?
