THE PITTSBURGH 8 AMTTOTHEEROfflBAM It is Reached at Last by a Reporter of The Post, A 100-FOOT HOLE H'iTHE BREAST, The Power and Fury With Which ths Avalanche oF Water Poured Through and Swept on Down Through the Valley. SCENES IX SODTH FORK VILLAGE. [Special from a Staff Correspondont,.] JOHKSTOWX, PA., June 3.—A TOST correspondent returned to-day from a nearly all-night ride to and from the hitherto inaccessible South Fork, and the dam whoso waakness caused such immense damage. The club house.of the South Fork Hunting and Fishing Club -was visited, the burst d»m thoroughly examined, and South Pork inspected from beginning to end. The missing Pittsburgers, \rhosa silence •was construed so distressingly by their anxious friends, are safe and well unless they have met with some accident since they left their comfortable places on the late Lake Conemaueb. The condition of the roads is simply horrible, and i is owing to their impassable condition that no word was receired from the Pitta burghers. Up to laat night nobody from Johnstown except THE POST correspond «nt had reacted South Fork, and it was impossible to reach the latter poini from AHoona until the same time. Colonel E. J. Unger, D. W. C. Bid well, J. J. Law Tence. James K, Clark. J. B. Shea, George E. Shea, L. Irwia and H. L, Irwin. went from the Club house to South DFork and from there to Altoona, expecting to he given au opportunity of reaching ritt'sburg. It is quite unlikely they will get there hefore a day or two In coming here it was necessary to use a two-horse spring wagon, aud even this couldn't be utilized wh*n •ome particularly steep banks wera encountered at the fording places. On horseback the fording of two streams was accomplished. ME. BOYJER'S STORY. W. I*. Boyer, the factotum of the South JFork Hunting and Fishing Club, was seen last night and stated among other things, the very Significant news that he had warned both Johnstown and South Fork by telegraph of their dangor hours before tho disaster happened. "As early as 11:30 o'clock in the morning thingabejjan to look serious," said he. "The water was rising rapidly in the lake, owing to the sudden freshets. AH of us were bard at work on the lett sida of the dam trying to create an escape for the water. We wanted the overflow to hold the surface of the lake level with the top of the dam at least. We cut a woir, but the bank was hard and shaly, and would not reach on t rapidly enough. The water pourod into the lake and raised it abov« the top of the dam. At first only the upper stones gave Tr»y, but each moment tk« water gained an impetus aud soon a furious break oc cnrredi "The middle of the dam for a distance oj 100 feet was ripped out as cleanly as if don« with a knife, and the next moment a miniature sea was pouring out tons and ton» of water into a gorge that was soon transformed into a deluge. The mem bars of the fishing club could do nothing then, and quietly retreated to the hotel. As for the warning to Johnstown, it was given about noon, and. the break didn't ocenr until two and one-half hours aftertrard4 They wouldn't believe tho dam was unsafe. One carpente? emphatically remarked it was a lie, and that no oao but » fool would beliave such, stories." THE KI7SH OF THE FLOOD. E, K. McHugh, who lives ia a house near a demolished bridge, obtained another view of the break about half a mile below the dam: "The grand rush of waters was simply indescribable," said ho. "The mighty roar, the furious bullowing, the horrible appearance of this advancing wave, as it came rolling aud pitching onward, I shall never forget. George S. Lamb had a horse near one of the approaches to the bridge. He hastily cleared his wife and children out of the way, but could not save a ainela article of furniture, for the whole house was bundled out of sight the next moment. George C. Fisher is another person who owned a house nearer tho dam than Lunib, but he got out quite promptly when the first; aound of the broken dam was heard. "Notice the driftwood," said Me Hugh, "showing the general direction and tenor of the flood." From a aiatanca the sight durine tbe flood was appalling. Tho limits of the Bide boundaries were certainly a quarter of a mile broad, and the sweeping •wall curled and twisfct-d and lashed in the most horribly «ugg«stive manner, Two hours were consumed in letting the water ruu out. The release began at 2 o'clock P. M. and lasted until after 4. As tor the burated <iam, it is » sight in itself. At a great distance the break in the apparent bank of uiud does not look very great, but a close insp^ciiou reveals tfie true state of the case. The open section i» probably 100 teet in length, and the sides of .the cut are remarkably smooth. COTEREO WITH MUD. A clamber all over both sides shows the solid rock is tn a very great extent covered with a soft accumulation of mud. Iu some pUces, however, the masonrj can be found, and the character of the breasfwork determined. It appaars to be kxtade up of a maas of rubble workrough stone* packed down with cement in the bed of the Conernaugh river. Right in the middle of the gap in the dam aorao cut stone work is exposed. This is said to be the culvert by which some large pipes conducted the overflow' from the bottom of the dam to the stream beyond. Even now the Oonemaugh river is running like a mill sac*, but tne volume of water is of course ,-idiculoualy small compared with what it recently 'was. This little jtrearii, Dunmeyer'a inlet, Bodebauffh's inlet,' Muddy run and au unnamed brook, are supplying plenty of material tor another lake mthe old place, but as there 58 no barrier to the water's egress it rapidly runs out. Pools of dirty •vrater dot its bed, as depressions ln:re and there 'detained and hold it in their embrace, as i f l o t h to allow such a prize to escape.' The ooze is lour or five inches dorp, and it is impossible to walk in tho valley with any degree of easa In many Dlact'H there are 'sink holes. While your correspoudent was informed by Mr. Boyer that all of the gentlemen of the Decoration Day party had 'departed for Pittsburgh, one elderly maiden lady residing in the neighborhood took occasion to oast reflections upon such statements. She sad that she had been informed that oue of the party had remained to Kettle all debts with the intention of getting away from Lake Conemaugh and never going near it again. Tbe lady displayed considerable bitterness, and reflected on the club because of the pre aumed death of her relatives in Johns town. There are several people in the neighborhood who talk iu the same strain COLONEL UNGEK'S FAKM. Colonel Unger's farm is almost separated from everything else. Ihe flood washed away the roads along the hillsid*. and the result is the greatest difficulty iu moving around. For instance, ou the way to the club bouse from Johnstown two streams must be forded. Last night they w»ro very turbulent, and threatened to carry off your correspondent aud his horses. To rWch Colonel U rigor's farm requires the fording of the Conemau^h river an almost impossible clamber over rocks to the road after the river is crossed, and then a hazardous drive alone a sliding bank to bis place. Demolished bridges are entirely responsible lor this state of affairs, • > . After investigating the condition of the cause of tho horrible casualty • THE POST writer continued on his way to South Fork. This place is.two-miles from the dam, 11 miles from Johnstown, and 29 miles from Altoona. After tbe fording of the Conemaush river where the bridge stood, a rocky road, winding along tbe brow of a tremendoua ravine, leads to the station ot South Fork. It was down this ravine tha flood dasued. The sides had boon prettily clad with trees and underbrush of various kinds, but when the water came it stripped them of all their usual decorations, tearing up things by the roots and making a brown track where previously waving tree tops had stood. And, by the way, an idea of the terrific force of'this volume of water may ba given by this statement: Fivo or six rocks, weighing a ton apiece at least, bad been washed down from the dam a distance of three-fourths of a mile. They were rolled along like so many pebbles. CONDITION- OF SOUTH KOBK. South Fork itself is in bad sbape. The people are poor, and while the whole place is not worked out, 22 houses ware carried away, upset or smashed. Two persons wvre drowned. lUv. McMahon, said to be a local Methodist preacher, and Howard Scbaeffer, a miner. McMahon's family is away, but be lives in a a mall bouse in A low-lying district, and was surprised by the flood and drowned before ha could bo rescued. SchaeU'er was helping to secure a bridge. The water rose suddenly, he lost his balance, fell into tho addyiug swiil, and was carried away in a inoineut. The acone railroad bridge at this pUce was also carried away. Yesterday several trains full of Altooua curiosity seekers were carried to South Fork. Tlioy saw in miniature the scene enacted on a far mora extensive scale elsewhere. Three or four hou»«3 were upturned, ten or twelve were swept away, aud a n u m b a r wore reduced to kindling wood. While a large pare of the town is built on hL'h ground, quite a portion of it was inundated. Tbe wreckage ia piled 10 fcoc high in the streets. THE GOVERNMENT ACTS. Organizing for a Systematic Canva ss fo Contributions at the National Capital—-Health Authorities Moving. to The Pitts bunrh Post.1 WASHINGTON, June 3 —The president, the secretary of war and attorney general to-day held a confrre.nce to discuss what aid could be rendered to the suffe.rers at Johnstown and along the line or destruction. The resources of the war department are not extensive in the matter of t«nts, etc., but it was decided to furnish rations and medical stores when somo idea could be obtained as to what would be needed in this line. No request for rations has yec come. Two army officers, Captain Gageby and Lieutenant Miller, who have volunteered their services, have been detailed to aid General Hastings, and any recommendations they may make will ha responded to by the department. The president will retain communication with General Braver, and whatever aid caii.be given by the government authorities will be extended. The subscription of citizuns of "Washington^ will make a considerable H u m . Washington Nailor, a prominent liveryman, will donate the receipts of an extensive line of oabs for on« day and all the newspapers are r«ceivint? subscriptions. The Associated Charities and Ked Cross societies are preparing for a systematic c&nvass of tho city, and these various enterprises will collect many thousand dollars. .For the past two days there has been a preat. demaud at the newstands for THE POST and other Pittsburgh newspapers, but they are not obtainable as none have arrived hor« since Friday. A few pouches of letter mail from Pittsburgh which was forwarded by way of Buffalo and N«w York, were received at the postoffico here to-day, but no second .class mail from Pittsburgh is expecre4 for a day or so, THE PKESIDKNT TO PRESIDE. Tho district commraiasioners to-night held a conference with th« president and the result will be & call for a public meeting at Willard's Hull to-morrow to systematize the work of raiding a relief f u n d for tho Johnstown sufterars. The president has signed the call and will preside at tho mooting. A telegram was received at the White Rouse to-day signed by representatives of the Masonic fraternity of Pittsburgh requesting the co-operation of tho national Board of Health with the local sanitary authorities in cleaning the Allegheny river. A reply was sent stating tho hoard was not now in existence. Dr. AtkinKon, at Pittsburgh, was designated to act for the war department in the matter, and Surgeon General Hamilton will put himself in communication with local authoriting for t h e purpose of rendering advice and assistance. -.»..».«--. S10MSCH BITTER LH.HfflRISDBDfiCOIPUT, A REDUCTION OF Advertising prices, without clear information of what for, is one of the plagues of the clothing business. There are more apostrophes and adjectives, often over a comparatively valueless quality at a cheap price, than would do for a proclamation of martial law! Never hear a word from Wariamaker's about prices, do you? We'll do anything we can to help you to a fair judgment about clothingl and get you coming to our store, hut how advertising our prices will do that is, we confess, a mystery. They tell you about .quality no more than dashing a chunk ot cold iron into water discovers its temper. There's one common-sense way of understanding prices: and that's with the goods in hand, the quality stated, and an examination of the fit and workmanship. We'll submit our goods, with perfect confidence, to that way of finding which is cheapest. Nobody can beat us on prices for reliable clothing, though we're not making a big flourish of them in newspapers. 1,000 pieces to make to measure. 30ALLTOOTEB 40 THE PERHOUSE. CENT, Carpets Reduced.
