Foundation ...a Champion for Children with Disabilities Who We Serve Mission Allegro Foundation...a Champion for Children with Disabilities is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that combines movement instruction with medical and educational expertise, creating new techniques to teach children with disabilities and enhance their quality of life. A l l e g r o Allegro teaches more than 700 children with intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, orthopedic challenges (wheelchairs and walkers), spina bifida, autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, muscular dystrophy, visual and hearing impairments, children “at-risk”, and children with cancer in FREE classes every week! Allegro Foundation does not discriminate against any type of disability! S t u d e n t S p o t l i g h t Brian Thad Brian is a 12-year old boy with a diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome. As a result, Brian experienced severe brain damage (developmental delays) and he is legally blind in his right eye. He also lives with cerebral palsy, a seizure disorder, and has difficulty walking. His legal guardians have had custody of him since five months of age. Thad is a 10-year old student in two of Allegro’s programs. At six months of age, Thad was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis. This condition causes tumors (generally benign) to form throughout the nervous system. Some tumors resolve on their own, but others require surgical removal. Neurofibromatosis causes a variety of symptoms, and in Thad’s case, includes difficulty with fine and gross motor skills and intellectual disabilities. As an infant, Brian experienced a subdural hematoma as a result of being shaken. Subsequently, the hematoma caused Brian to have seizures and despite medications, operations, and implants; the seizures continue to this day. When Brian was an infant, his guardians were told that he would never crawl, much less walk. Amazingly enough, he has overcome many odds! Throughout 2014, Brian made huge strides in his development through his participation in Allegro’s movement education programs held at Novant Hospital. In the beginning, Br ian was disengaged fr om the r est of the class and had little interest in participating with instructors, volunteers or students. After a short time, Brian entered into the Allegro classroom with enthusiasm and began to respond to auditory and visual stimulation by laughing and smiling, recognizing the other students and observing them. Due to Brian’s progress, he was asked to participate in a presentation with his Allegro and his guardians were thrilled for him to be involved. As a child who was told he had little chance he would walk on his own, participating with Allegro has been a huge milestone in Brian’s life. He has continued to excel in both fine and gross motor skills with Allegro’s help and we are very proud of him! “Part of the wonderful thing about Brian is his love of people, music and movement. Allegro provides him with all of those and more and help not only develop but keep Brian interested and happy!” ~Brian’s family. 1 Thad enjoyed Allegro’s movement education class at Beverly Woods Elementary School so much that he asked his mother to join our community outreach program held at Sardis Presbyterian Church as well. Allegro instructors use an exercise where students run underneath a large piece of fabric as it is lifted into the air. This activity works on sensory integration and sequencing ability, two important aspects of brain development. When Thad first joined Allegro, he was very shy and reserved. Initially, his participation in this exercise required volunteer guidance and direction. As the year progressed, Thad began running underneath the fabric by himself and he loves the exercise so much he asked his mother to buy fabric so he could enjoy the activity at home. After participating with Allegro over the past year, Thad’s mother reported improvements in his verbal skills, eye contact, and his ability to follow directions. Thad enjoys Allegro’s activities so much that he also practices the “Freeze” at home, indicating his ability to remember and repeat lessons taught in his classes. The “Freeze” activity uses sequencing techniques, strengthens his ability to react to cues, and improves listening and gross motor skills as well. Allegro classes benefit many aspects of life for our students living with disabilities. Thad’s participation in Allegro has increased his self-confidence while also decreasing his anxiety levels. His mother explains that he feels a huge sense of pride after leaving his classes. She also reports that Allegro is instrumental in Thad’s ability to learn and remain focused. While improving both mentally and physically, Thad is able to have fun while he is learning with Allegro- something we want to make sure he enjoys for years to come! TEEING OFF FOR A GREAT CAUSE!!! Platinum Gold Silver Ron & Paulette Sherrill 6 LETTER FROM PAT FARMER Allegro Founder/President Dear Friends, This past October, I had the honor and privilege of launching a brand new partnership with the Fort Mill school district in South Carolina. Along with our 23 programs in the Charlotte and surrounding areas, Allegro welcomed our brand new site at Gold Hill Elementary School! I cannot express my joy with words when I see the Allegro programs and philosophies expanding into new territory! My passion has always been to teach children living with disabilities and my spirit is renewed each time I step into the classroom with the Allegro students! I absolutely love sharing Allegro with new children, including their teachers and assistants. At first, students typically enter the classroom with feelings of apprehension and nervousness about what they will experience. It is amazing to watch as these feelings quickly fade and joy begins to radiate from their faces. Through the Allegro programs, I have the opportunity to impact the lives of our community’s most precious children. This is a gift that I do not take for granted and one that I am incredibly honored to be able to experience on a daily basis. First and foremost, Allegro is physically, mentally, and emotionally impacting the lives of the children we teach every week in our free movement education programs. Secondly, we have the joy of witnessing the families of our students watch as their children flourish with confidence and improve their physical and academic capabilities. Finally, I have seen what a blessing it has been for our volunteers and Teaching Assistants to be able to directly impact the lives of all our children and discover what a child with a disability CAN do! Being a part of the Allegro experience is a true blessing and something we can ALL continue to share one person at a time! I am so touched and thankful to have a wonderful community supporting us in everything we do. Your generosity allows us to continue our work and increase our partnerships with new schools, like Gold Hill Elementary. Our hope is to continue to grow so we are able to serve more of the 15,000 children living with disabilities in the Charlotte and surrounding areas. Your decision to support Allegro is a decision to DIRECTLY IMPACT the lives of these precious children and their families for years to come! As the 2015 holiday season approaches, I ask you to please consider Allegro and our wonderful children as you plan your holiday giving!
