Letter from CEO & Board Chair
Dear Friends,
In Fiscal Year 2011-12, Edgewood made a profound impact
and transformed the lives and restored hope to children,
youth, and families across the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 1851, we have repeatedly adapted to meet the needs
of the community.
During this past fiscal year, we repositioned our behavioral health services to respond
to and prepare for the tremendous changes in the state and national environment.
We extended our outreach across the state to strengthen our Residential Treatment
Program and respond to the state’s realignment of funding for children’s mental
health and child welfare services from the state to the counties. We diversified our
revenue sources and opened another cottage to meet the increasing demand for our
innovative Hospital Diversion program. School districts assumed total responsibility
to fund and fulfill the mandate for mental health services to special education
students. To respond to this, we developed a cost effective model to provide schoolbased services across San Mateo County.
During the course of the year, we made a number of adjustments to prepare for
Health Care Reform. We implemented systems to accommodate private pay and
commercial health insurance payments. To prepare for the integration of primary
care and behavioral health, we partnered with a local health clinic, to station a
clinician at their sites and a pediatrician at our campus. In order to establish hubs
for behavioral health prevention and strengthen our family support services, we
established alliances with several community-based agencies to expand our Family
Resource Centers. We renewed our contract to provide technical assistance and
training to all Kinship programs across the state.
The planning and rapid responses we made throughout the year made us a stronger
agency and allowed us to provide services to more people in need. We estimate that
we served well over 7,000 children, youth, and families. We continued our legacy of
serving youth with the highest needs, as well as providing early intervention and
prevention services to those children and youth who are at risk.
Our strength is derived from the passion and commitment of our Board, staff,
volunteers, and the entire Edgewood community. Thank you so much for all of your
support for the children and families we serve.
Sincerely,
Matthew Madaus, L.C.S.W.

Expressive Arts
THE POWER OF ART
Edgewood is committed to the benefits of recreation and art as therapeutic
methods. We are featuring our art program this year because of the powerful and
positive effect it had on one of our children. Our art program is primarily funded
by private donations. This enriching program provides the opportunity for the
children and youth to think about deeper personal subjects, to gain confidence,
engage in expression, and to restore their voice in the larger conversation of life.
Melusina Gomez, our Arts Program Manager, pictured above, notes, “These kids are
survivors and have more to say than most their age.”
Below is a portion of a speech, slightly edited for publication, from one of the recent
graduates who worked with Melusina and Chloe Khan in the art program. Obviously,
she learned a lot about herself and transformed from a shy, scared young girl to the
confident young woman chosen to give the graduation speech at Achievement Day.
I see a lot of people come and go and now it’s our turn to go. Changes are hard to
handle but we have to take the opportunity and go even further. I changed a lot since I
first got here and I’m glad I was here in the first place. Edgewood helped me and made
me a whole different person. When I first got here, I was very shy and antisocial.
Now I’m very happy and a talkative person. I always say hi to people, give people
hugs and make them happy. I wasn’t like that back then. When I look back, I realize
I have grown a lot since I came here and I feel proud of myself. Edgewood has a lot of
supportive staff and I would like to thank them all for helping me. Please continue to
support the kids and work together as a team.
