Foreword from the Dean... It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi MARA and our Education bulletin for 2010. At the faculty we are focused on nurturing and developing professional educators and researchers. We have done this for more than 20 years and we hope to continue doing this for many more years . Many of our students both undergraduate and postgraduate helm schools , faculties and various organisations in Malaysia and abroad . The faculty has successful, long standing links with the industry, the schools, teacher training institutions and other institutions of higher learning. The articles and information on various activities in the bulletin is testimony to this. As a Faculty of Education we must undertake and exploit research, creating new knowledge and achieving international standing in key research areas . In line with this I am pleased to announce the fifth bi-annual International Conference in University Learning and Teaching organised by ACRULeT (Asian Centre for Research on University Learning and Teaching ) which is one of the centres of excellence in our Faculty . Motto: “Anything worth doing, is worth doing well ” Page 2 From the Deputy Dean of Industrial Network... Alhamdullillah, the much awaited publication which promotes and highlights major events of the Faculty of Education has finally become a reality. When I first became the Deputy Dean of Research and Industrial Linkages in September 2009, there were so many things I had in mind. One of them is this ‘1EDU Bulletin’ which hopes to highlight the events and achievements of the faculty. As this is the inaugral issue, I take it with pride to honour the success stories of the faculty by publishing them for the mass audience. I am sure the audience will find the bulletin informative and fun at the same time as the bulletin is also packed with pictures and interesting short facts and quotations. As the newly appointed Deputy Dean of Research and Industrial Linkages, I aspire to assist my colleagues in the faculty in any way possible. It is my hope to have the faculty to be known as a ‘thinking faculty’, one which does not only focus on teaching but at the same time improves the teaching practices based on research and publication. For that to materialize, we have embarked on several professional development programmes such as the seminar on ‘Leveraging Research, Publication and Innovation’, workshop on ‘Academic Writing and Publication’, and the faculty biweekly colloquium. Many more will take place. In connecting the faculty with the industries, I realize that the staff needs to have ‘friendly and helpful friends’ from interested parties. I am proud to say that many times our reputation exceeds the faculty as we have received many visits from national and international institutions to establish network and plan potential collaborations. For example we have networked with the Malaysian Armed Forces, MARA, Uzbekistan ISTEDOD Foundation, the University of Hertfordshire, the University of South Australia, and the latest Bankyu Gakuin Univerity, Tokyo to name a few. The new ‘Corporate Profile’ which is heavily informative in terms of the faculty’s niche areas, products, trainings and other relevant consultancy services is expected to market the faculty thus encouraging the entrepreneurship amongst the staff. Besides the ‘1EDU Bulletin’, the ‘Corporate Profile’ plays similar role in providing the faculty with opportunities to be known in the industry. To end, I sincerely hope everyone will find pleasure in reading the bulletin. It does not only mark the new direction of the faculty, but most importantly it provides a compilation of the faculty’s achievements and success stories; an evident of a faculty “Pursuing Excellence”. Associate Professor Dr. Faizah Abdul Majid Deputy Dean (Research & Industrial Linkages) e-mail: [email protected] From the Deputy Dean of Students’ Welfare (HEP)... Assalamualaikum and Salam 1 Malaysia The students of the Faculty of Education and the UiTM are the most valuable members of the campus community, hence, we are here to lend a hand to you and cater to your needs. There are vast opportunities for you to develop skills in leadership and teamwork, and social responsibility to prepare you for your future roles in society. Through leadership roles and activities such as sports, cultural activities, event management and community services, you will grow in confidence and acquire new knowledge and instill in you skills which will make you more marketable when you join the work force. Do regularly surf the Faculty’s HEP blog (http://hepfp.blogspot.com) to check on the calendar for forthcoming events, announcements, even job vacancies and many more information. We look forward to serving you and working with you for an all-rounded education at the Faculty of Education and UiTM. Associate Professor Dr. Izaham Shah Ismail Deputy Dean (Student Affairs & Alumni) e-mail: [email protected] From the Deputy Dean of Academic... First of all, I would like to congratulate the team for initiating this bulletin. It is indeed a commendable effort to channel information and to raise the members’ awareness of the faculty’s activities and achievements. The Faculty of Education is actively reviewing the curriculum and ensuring our program design and delivery to be in line with Outcome Based Education (OBE) initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education. Our main educational objective is to produce graduates who are competent with strong understanding of fundamentals of teaching and learning in their respective fields and who uphold professional ethics. We are also working hard to graduate educators who will be able to effectively adopt from and adapt to the local and global work environment. What is also important is our aim to produce graduates who will lead based on experience and knowledge. Our academic programs have been designed with these outcomes in mind. As students of the Faculty of Education, you are our outcomes, the final product to be armed with the needed knowledge, skills, attitudes and experiences that will enable you to become successful educators and practitioners. We seek to provide a regulated and stimulating academic environment, buoyed by creative teaching and earnest effort by the faculty staff. All that we ask from you is that you pursue excellence endlessly by directing your energy towards learning new things from the lecturers and to keep on trying to be the best. Strive to achieve independence and self direction. As aptly stated by Aristotle, “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Let us grow together….
