MERCY...The First Name In
Mercy High School Celebrates Fifty Years
Mercy High School, the first name in Omaha Catholic education.
The 2005-2006 school year marked Mercy’s 50th anniversary on
48th Street. The journey of Mercy is amazing. From Dublin, Ireland
to Omaha, Nebraska, Catherine McAuley’s vision of service to the
poor, sick and uneducated has
driven the development of many
ministries. Empowerment of
young women and education for
women and children have
inspired and guided Mercy
schools around the world. Mercy
High School Omaha is today’s
witness to Catherine’s enduring
vision.
Chemistry students in 1957
In 1864, seven Sisters of Mercy
disembarked upon the railroad
river town that was Omaha.
On November 2, 1955, Mercy High School opened her doors to 675
young women, 150 from St. John and over 300 from St. Mary.
Today, through Mercy’s unique negotiated tuition program, no girl
is denied an education. This thriving education community is
centered on the works of Mercy and grounded in faith, knowledge
and service.
Over the past 50 years, Mercy High School has physically
transformed into a modern educational institution. As times
changed, Mercy improved facilities to meet the needs. Typewriter
rooms evolved into computer labs; a full-size gymnasium was built.
The former gym/auditorium finally became a performing arts center
with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. The sacred space
of the chapel was renovated and enlarged and now accommodates
over 400 people. The convent was converted into development
offices and additional classrooms; and the cafeteria received a
facelift, becoming the student dining hall.
Mercy’s 50th anniversary celebration kicked off at Fiesta 2005, a
Golden Anniversary. Fiesta 2005 brought in over $230,000 for
negotiated tuition. The festivities continued with the formation of
the Golden Guild. In April 2005, the 50-year graduates were honored
and given their Alumnae Association pin. These women were the
last graduates of St. John and St. Mary, before the schools merged
to become Mercy High School.
On November 2, 2005, the official anniversary date, the Heritage
Wall was unveiled.
Chemistry students 2005
During the next 65 years, Mount St. Mary, St. Catherine’s Academy,
St. Berchmans, St. Mary and St. John High Schools were opened as
alternatives to Omaha public schools. The Sisters of Mercy assumed
responsibility for Catholic education in the city.

This permanent pictorial timeline traces the journey of Catherine
McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy from Ireland to Omaha. This 30foot pictorial timeline hangs in the hallway connecting the old
Mercy with the new Mercy, across from the statue of Catherine
McAuley. Mercy’s future sits in the classrooms, where our young
women learn and live the teachings of our foundress.
Omaha Catholic Education
The unveiling of the Heritage Wall took place in front of members of
Mercy’s first graduating class, the class of 1956, as well as past
principals, including Sr. Kateri Vojir, RSM, SM ’39, Sr. Virginia Daly,
RSM, SJ ’41 and Sr. Corrine Connelly, RSM ’58. Sr. Jeanne O’Rourke,
Mercy’s campus
minister, dressed
up as Catherine
McAuley in the
traditional Mercy
habit and officially
unveiled
and
blessed the wall.
Omaha, said Lorray Smith ’67. The Sisters of Mercy were the first to
bring religiously run girls schools to Omaha. As a member of Mercy’s
development committee and a long-time Mercy supporter, Smith
wanted to help make this dream a reality. Her employer, Qwest
Communications, was offering a special grant to a non-profit
organization where an employee volunteered. Smith saw this as the
perfect opportunity to start creating the wall. She researched Mercy’s
history with the help of Mercy archives from Omaha, Pittsburg,
Pennsylvania and Manchester, New Hampshire. Various other
groups aided her research, including the Douglas County Historical
Society, the Mercy Secondary Education Association and local
photographers. Renze Display company was chosen to create the
wall.
“Mercy
High
School is very
important to me,”
said Sr. Corrine.
The Heritage Wall is a sight to be seen. Each picture and memory is
a reflection of the pride of Mercy High School.
Typing class 1956
The 50-year celebration continued with Fiesta 2006. The Nifty
Fifties was a record-breaking event, raising over $275,000 for
negotiated tuition. Gov. Dave Heineman and First Lady Sally Ganem
were present to show their support.
The year and a half celebration of Mercy High School’s 50 th
anniversary culminated on June 11 during the All School Reunion.
Over 100 people attended the Mass and brunch. The event brought
together classmates from the ’30’s through the 2000’s.
Computer lab 2005.
“As a former student and former principal, I have a lot invested in
the school. It is such a gift to the Omaha community.”
The Mercy community, including the Alumnae Council and
administration, wanted to illustrate the long history of Mercy in
Over the past 50 years, Mercy has gone through many changes
including physical additions and renovations. These changes were
made possible only through the generous support of the Mercy
community. This community of Sisters of Mercy, the lay men and
women, parents, students, alumnae, family and friends, the
alumnae, family and friends constant support make Mercy what it
is today.
The building may have changed, but the spirit of Catherine McAuley
lives on in each and every student, and will for the next 50 years, as
Mercy High School continues to give young women a lifetime
advantage.

Negotiated Tuition Takes the
Extra Step
“Although I have never had any children or
relatives that have gone to Mercy High
School, I have lived in this neighborhood for
many years and I strongly believe in
neighborhood Catholic schools. I grew up
in Kansas City in such a situation and I feel
that experience is with me to this day.
Mercy, however, provides even more than
this. With negotiated tuition, they take the
extra step necessary to give students the
opportunity for a solid Catholic education.
This is a special effort by the school and the
Sisters of Mercy and we should all give this
our fullest support.”

Mercy’s Mission Magnetic
“My initial contact with Mercy was through a
friend who had been a member of the Board of
Directors. He asked if I would be interested in
joining it, to help oversee the school’s finances.
My kids had gone to other high schools and I
knew almost nothing about Mercy, but thought
the opportunity sounded interesting and agreed
to join.
Through several years of working with the
school, I have come to appreciate its mission,
the quality and dedication of its people, the pride
the alumnae take in their alma mater, and the
success Mercy has had in educating and
developing its students. Everyone involved
clearly has the girls’ best interests as their first
priority, with impressive results. I’m proud to
be associated with Mercy, and to have the
chance to help secure its future.”

Driving In a Success
Mercy High School’s Driving for
Excellence Golf Classic, held at
Tregaron Golf Course on July 25,
2005 hosted 156 participants
including 20 tee sponsors. The
temperature, reaching over 100
degrees, added an extra level of
difficulty but did not deter the
enthusiasm and generosity of
Mercy’s contributors. Sponsored by Pier 1 Imports and
supported by over 60 local businesses, the event brought in
$43,000 for Mercy’s tuition assistance program. The net
amount was $10,000 more than the previous year.
“Pier 1 likes to give back to the communities where we are
located,” said David A. Moore, senior manager of Pier 1
National Bank. “We found Mercy is a worthwhile endeavor.
We see the results in the community and are happy to be a
part of it, and we are glad to continue doing it!”
Co-chairs for the event were Mike Kelley; Steve Klich, general
manager, Armstrong Air/Jensen-Klich Supply Co.; David A.
Moore, senior manager, Pier 1 National Bank; and Larry B.
Good, president, P.I. Midwest. P.I. Midwest was also the sign
sponsor. Tal Anderson of Baxter-Chrysler-Jeep provided a PT
Cruiser convertible for the hole-in-one contest, which
unfortunately went unclaimed.
Along with the golfers, over 40 Mercy parents volunteered
throughout the day and prior to the event, securing raffle and
flag prizes. Current Mercy students also lent their time to
assist and make the day an enjoyable one for the golfers.

Donors Recognized for Lifetime Contributions
The Donors of Distinction recognition evening was held on November 13,, 2005, honoring the generous benefactors who have
made the mission of Mercy High School very real. Their commitment and dedication affirm the mission of Catherine McAuley.
Their lifetime gifts to Mercy High School allow every young woman the opportunity to live the works of Mercy.
Donors of Distinction Societies
The William and Catherine Callahan Society
Lifetime Giving of $1,000,000 or more
William and Catherine Callahan were an older, childless couple who befriended Catherine McAuley in her time of need. Quaker
in their beliefs, the Callahans tolerated, but did not endorse Catherine’s Catholicism. As their health failed, each was a deathbed
convert to the one true Faith, thanks to the loving influence of Catherine McAuley. Their admiration of and belief in Catherine’s
commitment to good works of Mercy in caring for the poor, sick, and uneducated that inspired them to bequeath to her their
personal fortune. It is this fortune that became the primary funding source for the foundation of the Sisters of Mercy.
Sisters of Mercy
The Anna Marie Doyle Society
Lifetime Giving of $500,000 or more
Anna Marie Doyle, called in religion Sister Mary Anne, was Catherine Elizabeth McAuley’s first disciple at the House of Mercy. She,
along with Elizabeth Harley, accompanied Catherine to George’s Hill and the Sisters of the Presentation for novitiate training to
become a religious sister; later, Doyle would be the first Superior of the Baggot Street House of Mercy. Anna Marie, offspring of
a cultured and artistic Dublin family and the aunt to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Sherlock Holmes fame, brought gifts of intelligence,
perseverance and sound management to the fledging religious order. Anna Marie Doyle was instrumental in the spread of the
Sisters of Mercy throughout Ireland.

Frances Warde, inspired by the same religious zeal and mission as Catherine, joined the women of Baggot Street in 1828 at the
age of 17. Her dedication and adventurous spirit fostered the establishment of numerous convents throughout Ireland. It was
Frances who led the Sisters of Mercy to the United States in 1843. At the request of Bishop Michael O’Connor, the first Mercy
convent was established in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Among her foundations is the Manchester New Hampshire Foundation,
from which the Omaha Sisters of Mercy emerged in 1864, to become the first religious to serve the Catholic Church in Nebraska
Territory.

The Works of Mercy, Corporal and Spiritual, are the embodiment of Catholicism. “As long as you did it to one of these, the least
of my brethren, you did to Me.” Jesus is very direct in His teaching: in serving others, we serve Him. When one’s charity enables
others to perform the works of the Gospel, blessings are multiplied ~ Christ is All in All.

The Spirit of Mercy Society
Lifetime Giving of $10,000 or more
The spirit gives Life, and the spirit of Mercy gives Mercy Life. The sacrifices of the many facilitate the work of the few, enabling the
fulfillment of Catherine’s dream that every young woman have the opportunity to learn about her God and the Gospel, about
making a living, about serving others, and about becoming all God intended her to be. The mission begun in Dublin so many years
ago is the same today: The Careful Instruction of Women—fitting them for this world, without unfitting them for the next. Those
who give in the Spirit of Mercy, give Mercy Life.

Mercy High School
celebrated 50 years,
50’s style at Fiesta
2006. The annual
fundraiser was held on
February 11 and raised
over $275,000 for
negotiated tuition. In honor of Mercy’s 50 years at 48th
and Woolworth streets, the Nifty Fifties-themed
celebration included student servers dressed in poodle
skirts and bobby socks, vinyl 45-record centerpieces, doowop music and photo opportunities with a pink Cadillac.
The evening began with Mass in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel
celebrated by Fr. Gilg, president of Skutt Catholic High
School and pastor of St. Mary Magdalene Parish. After
Mass, guests had
the opportunity to
socialize, bid on
silent auction
items and peruse
the baskets.
Before dinner,
Student Council
president, Molly
Huerter ’06, spoke
about the impact
that Fiesta and

The Mercy High
Singers then sang a medley of 50’s songs. Dinner, catered
by Hap Abraham, was served at 7 p.m. followed by the live
auction at 9 p.m. John Glenn, father of Amanda ’07,
served as the emcee and John Temme as live auctioneer.
Over 30 items were auctioned including a condo in
Florida, a package to the Missouri Valley Conference
basketball tournament in St. Louis, a sheet of two dollar
bills signed by Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, and a
Volkswagen Beetle.
Chairing the event were Walter and Sue Scott (honorary
chairs) along with Mike and Gail Yanney, Maurice and June
Cox, Cathie and John Fullenkamp and Larry and Shirley
Good. Ted and Cindy Menzel, parents of Hannah ’06,
served as general chairs. Various parent committees
spent months preparing for the night, making sure all
aspects were covered from bank operations to silent
auction solicitation. The silent auction items included gift
certificates, college gear apparel, and much more. Over
130 baskets were donated by parents, alumnae, friends
of Mercy and local businesses. Gift boxes were also sold,
with chances to win various First National Visa gift cards.
The night concluded with the raffle drawings. The parent
raffle winners were: third place, Greg and Lisa Hess
($250 voucher for books), second place, Eric and Ann
Bruner (2006-07 fees) and Bob and Mary Gonderinger
(one year tuition). John
Fahey was the lucky
$10,000 grand prize
raffle winner.
The Cor Misericordiae
Award, Latin for “Heart
of Mercy,” is awarded
each year at Fiesta,
recognizing and
blessing a person who
espouses Mercy’s
mission of careful
instruction of young
women. This person
enables Mercy to serve
our girls in the true
spirit of Mercy. This
year, we honor Robert
H. Matt. As a
prominent, successful,

owner, he is recognized
as a layman who is a
national leader in the Church today. He was a founding
member of the Archbishop’s Committee for Educational
Development in the Archdiocese of Omaha as well as a
committee member of the United States Catholic
Conference.
Bob is a staunch believer in Catholic education and has
been involved with Catholic ministries and Catholic
education in the Omaha archdiocese. He has devoted
many years of service and volunteerism to Mercy High
School. He served on Mercy’s board of directors from
1995-2004 and was a member of Mercy’s development
committee. Bob was also
a member of the steering
committee during each of
Mercy’s three capital
campaigns. His insight,
knowledge and counsel
were invaluable.

MERCY...The First Name In
Planned Charitable Gift Opportunities
Most donors are familiar with making cash donations to
their favorite charities. Many limit their gifts to donations by
cash or check from their regular income. However, by
making an outright gift of appreciated property to a charity,
donors may reduce their overall tax bill. It is often more
cost-effective to use an asset already owned to make an
important charitable gift.
There are numerous ways to include Mercy High School in
planned charitable giving, either during the donor’s lifetime
or after death. Some of the most common options are as
follows:
•
Gifting appreciated stock
stock.
•
Amending an existing life insurance policy to include
Mercy High School as an additional beneficiary, or
purchase a new one naming Mercy High School as the
beneficiary.
•
Amending a 401(k) or IRA to include Mercy High
School as a beneficiary;
•
Asking an attorney to create a bequest to Mercy High
School by adding a codicil to an existing will
will. A
bequest can be a specific dollar amount, a fixed
percentage of an estate, or a life income plan which
provides for a surviving beneficiary after the donor’s
death.
•
•
Establishing a charitable gift annuity which provides
the donor or his/her designee with fixed payments for
life.
Establishing a charitable remainder trust
trust.
It is best to discuss all changes with an attorney and/or tax
advisor, since tax laws change and must be considered for
each individual’s personal circumstances. Tax laws are
tools to be used and can leave the donor and the charity in
a better position than failing to plan. Good stewardship of
one’s charitable giving is a way to more effectively use Godgiven resources for God’s purpose.

Planned Gif
tunities
Giftt Oppor
Opportunities
A planned gift will ensure that assets are distributed in
accordance with the donor’s wishes and that the
educational mission of Mercy High School will continue for
generations to come. Some options to consider are as
follows:
•
Endowed named scholarship or tuition award ($25,000
minimum);
•
Teachers’ salary fund ($25,000 minimum);
•
Endowed teacher training/advanced degree award
($25,000 minimum);
•
Endowed minority tuition assistance ($50,000
minimum);
•
Endowed technology fund ($100,000 minimum);
•
Endowed academic department ($500,000 minimum),
e.g., Theology, fine arts, business, athletics.

New Legislation Enables Tax-Free
IRA Donations
One of the provisions of the Pension Protection Act of
2006 enables donors over age 70 1/2 to donate up to
$100,000 to charity tax-free if the money comes directly
from an individual retirement account (IRA) or a Roth IRA.
The new law is in effect for 2006 and 2007. It allows
distributions which would otherwise be taxable from IRAs
to be excluded from gross income.
There are numerous reasons why the new IRA rollover
might appeal to donors:
1. It is a simple method of making a year-end gift.
2. The charitable distributions count toward minimum
distribution requirements.
3. The distribution generates neither taxable income nor
a tax deduction, so even those who do not itemize their
tax returns receive a benefit.
4. The gifts may be made in addition to any other
charitable giving a donor has planned.
5. Donors may transfer up to $100,000 per year directly
from their IRAs.
6. The tax-free rollovers can be ANY amount, up to
$100,000 in one year.
If you are interested in supporting Mercy High School with
a charitable gift from your IRA, please consult your
financial advisor. If you have questions, or would like to
coordinate a direct transfer, please call Ingrid Borghoff,
development director, (402) 553-9424.

Sisters of Mercy Support Social Justice
“My association with Mercy began in 1962. I was five
months pregnant and had a bachelor’s degree in
Mathematics, but no Nebraska teaching certificate. It
was August and Sister Brendan needed a Math teacher.
She took a big risk in hiring me, and it is that Mercy
Spirit of taking a risk that has kept me close to Mercy. I
come from a long history of Catholic education that
stressed social justice. I see that same emphasis in the
Mercy order.
Very simply, I donate to Mercy High because I believe in
their mission. The negotiated tuition plan makes it
possible for many students to benefit from Catholic
education who otherwise would have to go to public
school. I also believe that an all girls high school gives a
young woman an opportunity to develop all of her
potential in a supportive environment.”

Mercy Graduates Benefit the Community
“All of us who have been closely associated with Mercy
High School are very proud, and with the people of
Omaha, are extremely appreciative, of the educational
commitment that Mercy High School and the Sisters of
Mercy are making to our young women. Mercy High
School, under the sponsorship and support of the Sisters
of Mercy, is a vital resource not only to the educational
community of Omaha, but also to the broader community
as well.
Over 50 years, Mercy High School has provided a topnotch, college prep education to young women from all
over the city. Mercy has an excellent fund development
program which allows it to work closely with these young
women and their families to provide a premier high
school education, regardless of the family’s ability to pay
tuition. The Mercy graduate will move on to college
and other endeavors, but most stay in or return to
Omaha to assume positions in business, providing faithbased leadership that benefits the entire community.”

Blessed with the Mercy Education
“We are so fortunate in Omaha to have such a good
Catholic school system and so many choices. Personally,
our family has been blessed to be able to take advantage of
Catholic education at several different high schools. We
support Mercy High School because it helps to offer a
private, Catholic education to many more young women
who might not otherwise be able to take advantage of a
faith-based education. A key component is negotiated
tuition, which analyzes each individual’s ability to contribute
with their own resources and then fills in the rest with
donations from the community.
We hope that we help to give a young woman an opportunity
to participate in single sex education that emphasizes not
only academics, but also faithfulness to the ideals of Jesus.”

Mercy True to Ideals of Founder
“I did not attend Mercy High School and I do not have a
student who attends Mercy. However, I support Mercy
because it is an institution true to its Christian mission.
The Mercy education is founded in the teachings of Mother
Catherine McAuley and her calling to serve the poor and
educate young women. Mercy is true to those ideals in
their admissions policies and in the moral and social
education they provide. Omaha Mercy is unique in that it
offers unparalleled financial support to those who would
otherwise be unable to afford a Catholic education.
Mercy not only prepares young women who are college
bound, but also those who may not have the academic
ability to go to college. This mixture of academic ability,
along with the fact that Mercy draws from over 50
parishes throughout the city, allows students to be exposed
to a variety of people who may have different experiences
than their own. Mercy brings these young women together
for the common goal of an excellent education founded
in Catholic values and traditions.”

Financial Support an Investment
“My support for Mercy High School is based on the first
hand knowledge of seeing the impact the school has had
on my six sisters, all of whom were Mercy graduates. I
believe that my sisters’ education at Mercy High School
was a substantial component in the process that has helped
them become successful, confident, centered individuals.
I also believe that this is a tougher, much more competitive
world today and that the mission of Mercy is a significant
resource available in developing the foundation of women
who will be tomorrow’s leaders. I consider my small
financial support of Mercy High School more as an
investment than a contribution.”

MERCY...The First Name In
Being the “First Name in Omaha Catholic Education” is both an honor and a responsibility.
During this Anniversary year, fifty years at our Woolworth location, we have had numerous
opportunities to savor our past, celebrate the present, and envision our future. From the
unveiling of the history wall to right up to the all-school Reunion in June, every celebration
has been a milestone in the collective memory of this great school.
Mercy is honored in the thousands of young women who, down through the years, have
graced the halls and classrooms of schools in various locations throughout the city of
Omaha. Since 1864, the Sisters of Mercy have been dedicated to the education of Omaha’s young women. Responsive to the
needs of the times, Mercy schools for girls have emerged, grown, merged or closed, as dictated by the needs of God’s people here
in Omaha.
The needs of today, at the dawning of this new millennium, cry for affordable private, Catholic education. Convinced that “nothing
is more important than the careful instruction of women,” the Sisters of Mercy support negotiated tuition and liberal arts
education that embrace all young women desirous of premier Catholic education.
In these trying times, when we are surrounded by conflict and violence at home and abroad, the responsibility for the deliverance
of faith-based, academically challenging, affordable education has never been stronger.
Mercy High School accepts this responsibility with the assistance and support of the Sisters of Mercy and the countless generous
people listed in these pages.
Our success story is your story. We thank you, even as we revel in the old cliché:
“We’re not the best because we are the oldest.
Rather, we are the oldest because we are the best!”
Sincerely in God’s tender Mercy,
Sister Johanna Burnell, RSM

Mercy High School Mission Statement
Mercy High School is a Catholic educational community sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and rooted in the conviction
that education is a process of leading human beings to use their academic and creative talents to contribute to a more
just, loving, and hopeful world. Mercy High School ministers to young women as they learn to express their faithfulness
to the ideals of Jesus through faith, knowledge, and compassionate service. The challenge to students is not only
spiritual, but also intellectual and aesthetic; it is not only personal, but also interpersonal and multicultural, embracing
societal and global concerns. A liberal arts curriculum provides opportunities for students to realize their individual
potential and leadership through academic excellence that promotes lifelong learning, and prepares them for further
academic study or immediate employment.
