Hungry
The Capital Area Food Bank, founded in 1980, provides food through hundreds of partner agencies to nearly 500,000 hungry people in the Washington metro area. A member of Feeding
America, the CAFB is the largest public, nonprofit food and nutrition education resource in the
region and annually provides 27.5 million meals to residents struggling with hunger. It takes a
comprehensive approach to addressing hunger by increasing access to nutritious food and initiating change through education, leadership training and advocacy. The CAFB works
closely with, and provides food to such partner agencies as Bread for the City, DC Central
Kitchen, Martha’s Table, ALIVE!, Manna and hundreds more. For more information on hunger,

Dear Friends
The Capital Area Food Bank experienced
significant changes last year. Our exceptional leader for 32 years, Lynn Brantley,
retired at the end of 2012, but, thankfully,
she will continue to serve the food bank as
president emeritus.
Chosen unanimously by the Board of Directors, Lynn’s successor is Nancy E. Roman,
immediate past Director of Public/Private
Partnerships and Communications at the
United Nation’s World Food Programme
(WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian
agency, feeding 100 million people in 75
countries.
Nancy embodies the skills, experience and
devotion necessary to continue the tradition
of excellence and innovation so critical to the
future of the Capital Area Food Bank. Her
success in raising awareness and resources
for the fight against hunger worldwide is
well-known. Her leadership and expertise
will allow us to expand further to meet the
complex hunger needs in our region.
4
Another major change in 2012, and a legacy
of Lynn Brantley’s leadership, was the Capital Area Food Bank’s move into a brand
new food distribution center at 4900 Puerto
Rico Avenue in Northeast Washington, just
one-half mile from our old facility.
Greg Ten Eyc k
Chairman
Due to the uncertain economy and the increasing numbers of those suffering from
inadequate nutrition, Lynn directed the
Capital Area Food Bank to embark on a
capital campaign in 2005 under the leadership of co-chairs Donald E. Graham,
J.W. Marriott Jr., the late Abe Pollin and
Bennett Zier. The Board and I agreed with
Lynn that we were outgrowing our former
facility and were no longer able to meet the
growing demand for food in the region.
The campaign concluded in November of
2010 with a total of $37 million raised plus
a capstone grant of $5 million from Mr.
and Mrs. William E. Conway Jr. through
their charitable trust, The Bedford Falls
Foundation.
Construction of the new facility began in
January of 2011. The architectural firm,
Epstein; the general contractor, Turner
Construction Company; and the development manager, the Jair Lynch Development
Partners renovated a 23,000-square-foot
office portion of an existing building and
constructed a 100,000-square-foot facility devoted to food storage and the partner
agency shopping area. The name of the
entire structure is The Bedford Falls Foundation Distribution Center, in recognition
of the capstone grant given by the Conways.
The Capital Area Food Bank’s new facility
opened on July 31, 2012. Over time, we will
be able to increase our storage capacity and
food distribution to meet the growing need
in our region.
As the Capital Area Food Bank enters 2013
with new leadership and a much-improved
food distribution center, we offer our sincere gratitude for your time and donations
that help us transform each dollar into
three nutritious meals.
We pledge to continue working diligently
to ensure that everyone in our community
has access to adequate and nutritious food.
We will extend our outreach resources
that educate, empower and enlighten our
neighbors. And, we stand behind our mission to serve others ’til no one is hungry.
Dear Supporters
I joined the Capital Area Food Bank
after serving for five years in a senior
leadership position in the United Nation’s world hunger program, where we
were responsible for providing food for
100 million people in 75 countries.
Some of my experiences during that period
were devastating.
A woman in Haiti tried to give me her baby,
because she could not feed him.
People huddled in refugee huts in Darfur
described having their sisters and daughters
raped and killed in their villages, and crossing Sudan, living on little more than grass.
However, nothing has been as disturbing
— or inspires me more to change — than
the debilitating and stubborn hunger I have
witnessed in my hometown, the capital of
the most affluent country on earth.
Early into my new job, I decided to get out
and see the Capital Area Food Bank’s work
in action. After meeting with our terrific
truck drivers, I climbed into the cab with
Odessie McCauley, who goes by Jun, short
for Junior. Jun has been driving trucks full
of food around Washington, Northern
Virginia and Maryland for 26 years. Our
destination that cold March morning was
the Dodge Park neighborhood in Landover, MD — no more than 30 minutes from
the White House.
Na ncy E. Rom a n
President and CEO
When the Capital Area Food Bank truck
rolled up, the faces brightened. It was not
yet 7 am, but there were already a dozen
people in line — two mothers with young
children, elderly people with canes and
walkers, all of them patiently and quietly
waiting in the cold.
I was greeted warmly by the Reverend
Banks who asked me into his office. When
we returned just 10 minutes later, 50 people
were in line, waiting in the cold.
At that moment, a women rode by in a dilapidated car and shouted out, “Reverend
Banks, I can’t wait for food today, or I’ll be
late to work, but if there is any left, save me
some.”
It is hard to imagine that one in two children
in Washington, DC goes to bed hungry. Or,
that blocks from the White House, elderly
people wait patiently in the cold because
they lack for food.
But they do.
Over the past year, we and our 700 partner
agencies have seen hunger rising among the
working poor. With gas prices ticking ever
upward, with Social Security taxes increasing to 6.2 percent from 4.2 percent, with
food prices rising much more than wages,
many more who are working full time find
themselves needing additional food for
themselves and their families.
We at the food bank have been providing it —
through agencies you know and respect such as
Bread for the City and ALIVE! — and through
mobile pantries in hard-to-reach neighborhoods all over the Washington metro area.
The Capital Area Food Bank provides food directly to tens of thousands of hungry children,
seniors and families. Through our partner
agencies, we are reaching close to 500,000 people. We are also providing leadership, training
and food resources for hundreds of organizations, churches and other dedicated groups
serving the hungry.
As we move forward, we are committed to
three important issues:
• working more efficiently so we can do more
for more people;
• providing better nutrition and more fruits
and vegetables; and
• helping individuals and families gain consistent access to affordable nutritious food
themselves.
With your continued commitment, we are
helping to make sure mothers, fathers and children in the capital area don’t go to bed hungry.
Thank you so very much for helping us help
the hungry across our region.

The bedford Falls Foundation
distribution center
The Capital Area Food Bank moved into the new Bedford Falls Foundation
Distribution Center on July 31, 2012. The new facility is allowing us to better
manage food storage and distribution. It features a teaching kitchen in a
classroom setting that is used for more nutrition education and cooking classes,
a demonstration garden, and a much larger and more convenient storage, freezer
and refrigeration capacity.

Capital Campaign
’Til No One Is Hungry
The Capital Area Food Bank thanks the visionaries who invested in the future of our community by
supporting the creation of our new food distribution center, which opened in July, 2012. The new building is already increasing capacity to serve the nearly 700,000 people in the region at risk of hunger.
And special thanks to Capital Campaign Co-chairs Donald E. Graham, J.W. Marriott Jr., the late Abe
Pollin and Bennett Zier.

Meet Paula Porter
After seeing a television special on child hunger, Paula was inspired to volunteer at the food bank. Working over 35 years as a HR professional, Paula now enjoys her retirement at the food bank, helping recruit
potential volunteers throughout the region. We are
very lucky to have her as part of the food bank family.

a tribute to lynn brantley
1980-2012: Thirty-two Years of Service
Lynn Brantley retired as President and CEO of the Capital
Area Food Bank at the end of 2012, where she provided the
leadership and inspiration for 32 years. Throughout those years
serving the cause that was written most deeply in her conscience,
Lynn was the real thing — the authentic voice of the food bank.
The operational mandate of the Capital Area Food Bank — to
feed the hungry with dignity, prevent food waste and save partner agencies countless dollars while they serve those most in need — is in force today.
Lynn and others, in cooperation with the Interfaith Conference,
the United Planning Organization, and the DC Department on
Aging, founded the Capital Area Food Bank in 1980 on Martin
Luther King Jr.’s birthday, January 15, after recognizing the desperate need to organize food provisions for those suffering from
hunger in the District of Columbia and surrounding areas after
cuts in the USDA’s Food Stamp program.
Lynn took on the role of executive director in 1988, and several
years later became president and CEO. From a modest operation, the CAFB has grown to 130 employees and now distributes
27.5 million meals a year through its 700 partner agencies in the
District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Prince George’s
and Montgomery counties in Maryland.

Eugene Brake; (left) Lynn Brantley and Sister Simone Campbell, the nun

Lynn was an unwavering voice for the powerless and will always be remembered
as a leader of the hunger relief movement throughout the region.
Dear Capital Area Food Bank Family,
Retiring from my mission in life —
the Capital Area Food Bank — has been
the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to
make. While I’m no longer there physically, every day, through my thoughts and
prayers, I reach out to my former colleagues
and those they serve so admirably.
I welcome our new leader, Nancy Roman,
who will take the Capital Area Food Bank
to new heights.
Through the early 2000’s the food bank was
having to turn away millions of pounds of food annually; we were very limited in the
amount of fruits and vegetables we could
accept and were paying significant dollars
for outside freezer and refrigeration space.
This, coupled with the economic downturn
beginning in 2007, caused a significant increase in hunger in our region.
You, our community did respond by supporting our capital campaign to construct
a new food distribution center that is fully
paid for — no debt. This ensures that well
into the future, 92 percent of the resources
donated to the food bank will be spent on
food and services for the people we serve.
In 2012 we moved into a 123,000-squarefoot building that provides dry storage,
freezer and refrigeration capacity that
will greatly increase the amount of produce we can move out into the community
through our 700 partner agencies. I am so
deeply moved by your generosity, energy,
and passion and how you mobilized as a
community to make this happen. Your
commitment means that, over time, we
will be able to reach 700,000 of our neighbors who face hunger daily. I feel privileged
to have been a small part of this process.
Thank you!
Our new facility enables the Capital Area
Food Bank to renew its commitment to distributing nutritious food and, at the same
time, focus on programs that will showcase
how food bank ingredients can be transformed into healthy meals. The additional
space also provides for the Mildred Brooks
Teaching Kitchen in a classroom setting
which is used for more nutrition education
and cooking classes to help those who receive food learn how to stretch their dollars
even farther.
The food bank’s relationship with our
partner agencies, which include Food &
Friends, Shabach! Ministries, Bread for the
City, S.O.M.E., ALIVE!, Martha’s Table and
“N” Street Village, among others, is crucial.
Because of our partnerships, these organizations are able to use resources they would
normally spend on food to strengthen other
programs, including job-training, day care,
medical services, housing and counseling.
Today, food donations come from more
than 400 wholesalers, farmers, grocery
stores, brokers, and manufacturers, including 200 local businesses. Over 18,000 volunteers help inspect, clean, sort and track
nonperishable food each year, saving the
food bank over $2 million annually in labor
costs, while confirming the commitment
of the community to make sure that their
neighbors who may be struggling financially have the security of a full pantry at home
for themselves and their children.
I will always remember those of you who
have encouraged us over the years and have
contributed your time, food and funds.
Your support ensures that daily bread is not
just a gift for some, but is available to all who
come to the table when they are hungry.
