I always enjoy reading about barn finds in Mustang
Monthly but I never thought I’d see anything like
that. Lo and behold on my way to a Mustang car show
in Frankfort this spring I passed this “65 coupe sitting
outside of the barn by the side of the road. I was
traveling along Route 60 from Louisville when I spotted
this “field find” just west of Frankfort. I was eager to
get my car registered and show ready so I passed it up
without even stopping. I thought about it during the
show and told many people about it. I couldn’t wait to
go back and take pictures and maybe even talk to the
owner. When I got there nobody was around and my
cell phone battery was almost dead. I managed to get
just one picture but it turned out good. It was very
rough and looked like it had been sitting there for
many years. Since there was no fender badging it
might have been an inline 6. I never thought it would
happen but even I found an old Mustang sitting out in
a field! I bet it is still sitting there.

Ramblings by David:
The Holiday season has wound down. Most of
our Ponies are asleep in the garage for their long
winters nap. We still have one in the hospital
being brought back to life. Can't wait till Spring.
Thanks for the honor of letting me represent you
as your club President this past year. You made
me proud and look good. It wasn't me, it was
you! I stand on the shoulders of giants. As I
reflect back on 2014, it was a great year for your
club. Many of us went to the 50th anniversary at
Charlotte. We participated in parades, club
outings, social events and car shows. I hope you
have expanded your 'friend' base thru these
events. When we go on road trips to car shows,
the people that I meet, or seeing the old friends
that I have not seen for a year is what is all about.
There has to be something that your club does
that you find exciting. Our monthly meeting are
up to almost capacity crowd. Membership is over
150 families. You must be doing something right
to make your club a growing, vibrant and active
club.
Now for 2015. I sometimes don't like change.
But change is good. Leadership changes will be
made to the club. New ideas are welcome. This
coming year will be very exciting. Whether we
like it or not, September Stampede as well as
September in the Park car show is now put to
rest. Remember I said, change is good. Work
with me. It will be combined with the Bill Collins
Ford show and renamed, DCMC and Bill Collins
Fordfest, and will be the second Sat. in Oct. I am
very excited about this change and looking to
your support to make this one of the best cars
shows in the Louisville area.
Enough for now. Shut up David, and move on. I
heard that before. See you at a meeting or down
the road.
Thoughts
from the
editor
The planets must be in perfect alignment because I
was finally able to get a write-up out of the President
Of The Derby City Mustang Club. I am going to Vegas,
it has got to be my lucky day.
Now I have not known David near as long as most of
the club members but in the short time I have known
him, I have been impressed with his sense of humor
and forward looking vision for our club. Under his
tutelage and leadership club members have been
motivated to step up and make our club better. This is
evident in his message. He takes credit for nothing he
has accomplished but praises others for seeing his
ideas through and making our club better. With new
officer elections coming up this month, David’s ideas
will move forward as well as the vision of new club
officers. New leadership brings fresh blood to the life
of our club. So if you have ideas, step up and throw
your name in the hat. If you don’t want to run for a
position, then support our new officers with
constructive conversation and ideas. Attend the Jan
13th club meeting and cast your vote and get some
free chow and maybe even win some money.
Well 2014 is over and we have a new year of cruising
and car shows. In a couple months, the clay bars will
be broke out and gently dragged across our Mustangs
to smooth out that finish for that fresh coat of wax.
Detailing our prom queens for the various shows and
hoping to bring home several trophies. This upcoming
year will be my first to show for judging, and I am
hoping for the best, but there are some mighty good
looking rides in this club to run up against. Win, lose
or draw, I still enjoy spending time with our Mustang
family.

Highlights from the Dec 9th meeting

David Payne called the DCMC meeting to order.
New member, Mike Wilson, proud owner of 2003 six-banger Mustang.
We broke for chow, great pulled pork sandwiches provided by Barbara and Kenny Bruce
Last meeting minutes reviewed, motion to accept minutes by Roger Goodin, 2nd by Ron Boss
George Maxwell presented the treasurer's report for the club. Motion to accept the treasurer’s
report made by Leo Miller, 2nd by Dennis Dant.
Lynn Eddington broke down the various events and activities attended by club members.
• Day at the Downs - About 44 members, family and friends attended, enjoyed good food and
the ponies running with Joyce being the big winner of the group. Special thanks goes out to
Phil for lining up the event for the club.
• Light Up Louisville parade took place the day after Thanksgiving, had 12 Mustangs well
decorated and the crowd enjoyed the cars. Lisa Mitchell from WAKY rode one of the ponies.
One car had to drop out due to overheating, second time this issue for this owner, bad luck.
After the parade, 25 members and family had dinner at Captain Quarters.
• Last club event for the year is the annual Christmas party on the evening of Dec 20th at Kyana
club house. White elephant gift exchange and dinner. A big thanks to Charley and Marilyn
for setting this event up.
• Super (Souper) Bowl party on the 24th of Jan, chili & soup cook off @ the Swan Pointe Club
House, 1112 Swan Pointe Boulevard, Middletown (take the Blankenbaker exit off I-64)
• Special thanks to Phil for his numerous ideas for club activities.

Cruise/MCA rep, Larry Rixman Not many current events with the MCA but in 2016, MCA will be
celebrating a 40th anniversary and Indianapolis may be hosting the MCA national event.
Wynn Jefferson reported current active membership at 144, a reminder that some members are past
due, contact Wynn when if in doubt when due or expect a email reminder.
Joe Schreiner is still looking for a member or two to step up and take over the maintaining of the
club’s web page. New members are encouraged to forward a picture of themselves with their
Mustang to Joe so it can be posted on the website. Also club members get free advertising for
services, buying or selling.
Jack Pike made a report on the next letter, inquiring if all have been receiving OK, if experiencing
difficulty downloading the acrobat file from an email, the current newsletter as well as past issues
are located on the club website. A request went out for members to send a bio and some pictures
to Pike so the member spotlight page can be a regular feature of the newsletter. Great way to know
each other. Keep an eye on the military affairs page of the newsletter, helpful information, not only
for veterans but dependents of vets. A question of club elections being made by a small percentage
of attending members, but proxy votes could not be made by members unable to attend meeting
due to club by-laws not addressing the issue.
Ron Kinberger brought up the issue of upcoming club officer elections. It was mentioned that a
requirement to be a club officer also requires membership in the MCA. The benefits of MCA
membership was also discussed, ie insurance for various club events as well as the MCA being the
national level voice for Mustang owners through the years.

• David proposed the club establish a charity committee to accept and review future club
contributions. Yvonne Lehring, Phil Helm, and Pam Crawford have stepped forward to be on this
committee. Present any ideas or proposals for charity donations to the committee, then it will be
brought forward to the club board, then on to the club rank & file for vote. A motion was
presented to donate $250 to the Salvation Army Angel Tree program by Yvonne and second by
Lynn, passed by club vote.
• David announced that the club board has approved of a consolidation of the DCMC Sept Stampede
with the Bill Collin’s Car Show. Possible new name of the combined show will be the Derby City
Mustang Club presents the Bill Collin’s Fordfest. Further details will be published and posted on
the website. Roger Goodin made the motion to accept the merging of the two car shows, Paul
Sullivan second it, the club was in favor of carrying the motion. Kenny and Barbara were again
thanked for proving the chow for the meeting. A sign-up sheet was posted for the upcoming year
to provide club meeting food and snacks.
• Phil Helm requested the membership to present ideas for future club get togethers. Bring ideas
into the Jan meeting and they can be worked into the yearly schedule.
• Sandra raised the idea of utilizing name tags at the meetings so we can better be acquainted with
each other. Wynn was requested to be the name tag police and provide tags.
• The 50/50 drawing was won by Ron Kinberger and not by Larry or Jack this time, his jackpot was 37
bucks and $36 went into the club’s fund to help pay for meeting chow.
• Meeting was adjourned.

Our love of Mustangs happened by chance. Other than the 1991 silver 4-cylinder Mustang we had for a while years
ago we had never really paid much attention to them, in fact, we weren't really Ford fans. But one early summer
morning in 2009 as I was on my way to work I saw a black GT (2008) parked on the side of one of our country
roads. It looked so sharp in the back with its dual exhaust and pedestal spoiler and as I kept looking at it in my rearview mirror it kept looking better and better. It was like it was saying “look at me but don’t touch me and you
certainly don’t want to mess with me”. It was gone when I came home that evening but I saw it again the next
morning-just sitting there, this time with the parking lights and fog lights on-looking so sleek and sexy in the early
morning light. Again, I kept looking at it through my rear-view mirror-it was like it was calling my name. I told my
husband that night “let’s trade in our Escape and get a Mustang”--he said “sure” in that tone that says “forget it-you
have lost your mind”. It had been a really lousy year and after all that had happened I was willing to forget any
sense of sanity that I had and do something spontaneous and half crazy. It did get him thinking though and the next
day he went to a local Ford dealership “just to look around.” From that point on the hunt was on for a Mustang. In
June of 2009 we found “the car” - a brand new 2009 Vista Blue GT Premium with a manual transmission, dual
exhaust, and the same good looking pedestal spoiler but also a hood scoop which just made it more aggressive and
wicked looking. One day we were just cruising around in our new Mustang and stopped in a dealership that was
hosting a car show. When we pulled in someone said “you are going to show your car aren’t you? That show was
the DCMC show at Bill Collins Ford. We were so green and new to Mustang mania we didn’t even have any
cleaning stuff with us and sat on the asphalt parking lot because we had no chairs but we showed our car, talked
with lots of other Mustang owners, walked around and saw all the other Mustangs that people were showing, and
won our first trophy. From then on it wasn’t a daily driver anymore-we knew we had something special. Shortly after
that we bought a 2006 Mustang V6 with a pony package as a daily driver and in 2012 we sold it (for almost exactly
what we paid for it after 18 months of driving enjoyment) and bought another V6 pony package-only this one was a
2013 in Deep Impact Blue with a 6 speed automatic. We have met so many fantastic people, made so many friends,
and seen so many awesome cars since we became Mustang owners-all of the different styles, the modifications
people do (from subtle to drastic), the pride that people have in their ‘Stangs’, and mainly just the fun we have
taking it out for shows and cruises. This is one half-crazy idea that has been so positive and brought us a lot of fun
and enjoyment.
Our love of Mustangs also led to the creation of Wild-Side Mustangs Facebook page. This page originally was
called “Bill & Marcia’s Mustangs” but we wanted to give it a name that was more in line with the style of the car so
we re-branded it as “Wild-Side Mustangs”. Wild-Side Mustangs is a page where people can post pictures,
comments, ideas, and share stories about their families (pets included) and how they entered into “Mustang Mania”.
It is a fast growing page with a following that stretches worldwide.

Hello! My name is Vera Dunn and I have been a member of the Derby City Mustang Club
for a few years now. I have lived in Kentucky all of my life, originally from Breckinridge
County but currently residing in PRP. I am a single mom of two children- Hayley age 22
and Seth age 17. For the last 11 years I have worked as a supervisor in various
departments at Humana Government Business, most recently in the Billing and
Enrollment department (enrolling our nation's active duty and retired military personnel
into Tricare insurance).
My interest in Mustangs started at an early because of my love for "real" horses. The
fascination really kicked in at age 16 when my mom bought me my first car- a 1969
Mustang Coupe (which I still own to this day). "Christine" has been my faithful
companion for 25 years now! In addition to Christine, I have owned several Mustangs,
but none as dear to my heart as Black Betty (my 2003 GT). Sadly, Black Betty meet an
untimely death when an impatient driver t-boned me on Dixie Highway a few months
ago and totaled her out. I was absolutely devastated! I had to get back in the saddle
though, so I recently brought home Black Widow, a 2010 GT. I'm still in process of
customizing her and getting her exactly where I want her, but that's the fun in owning a
Mustang (besides driving them, of course!).

Usually this space is reserved for MCA news, but since it's the holiday season there is not much going on
at MCA and I saw this great article about the Mustang SVO in the Hagerty Insurance newsletter and
since I'm a proud original owner of a SVO, I talked Jack into including it in this month's DCMC newsletter.

SVO MUSTANG MARKS 30TH YEAR
By: Jim Koscs A showroom dud in the 1980s, this intriguing Mustang has a small but loyal following today
All you SVO Mustang owners can now gloat that Ford was ahead of its time with that unique version of the
pony car. Thirty years ago, Ford's better idea was to make a special Mustang that was more road racer than
drag racer, more Euro GT than main street tire burner.
The 1984-1986 SVO Mustang that Car & Driver and Road & Track magazines liked so much unfortunately
did not find the same reception in the showroom. Ford sold just 9,844 SVO Mustangs over three model
years. It was a brave step to put a turbo/intercooled 4-cylinder engine under the Mustang's hood,
especially when the model line's main attraction was the V-8-powered GT that sold for much less.
Today, the SVO Mustang is a kind of cult classic. It's also a bit of a history lesson, because that Ford is
offering a turbocharged 4-cylinder in the 2015 Mustang, a 310-horsepower model called the Eco Boost.
But 30 years ago what were they thinking? Ford was thinking that it was high time to broaden the
Mustang's appeal, that's what. Its Fox-platform mechanicals were already underpinning the Lincoln Mk. VII,
so why not tweak a Mustang to take on import sports cars?
Developed by Ford's Special Vehicle Operations, the 1984 SVO Mustang was powered by a 2.3-liter turbo
four with fuel injection and an intercooler. It was rated at 175 horsepower, which seemed tame in
comparison to the 210 hp from the 302 cu. in. 4-barrel V-8 that came in the Mustang GT. In a drag race, it
was no contest, the GT could run the quarter-mile in just under 15 seconds without power-shifting. The
SVO was more than a second behind.

But the number that really hurt the SVO was its price, nearly $16,000 when the faster GT started at
about 10 grand. Lots of love from Car & Driver and Road & Track magazines helped stoke initial interest
in the newfangled Mustang. Both magazines had driven SVO prototypes in the 24-Hour Longest Day at
Nelson Ledges race, a kind of development exercise for Ford; and both compared the SVO production
model favorably to sports cars like the Porsche 944 and Nissan 280 ZX, however, the road race cred did
not make the SVO a latter-day Boss 302.
The rest of the SVO package was top-notch, however. Ford borrowed four-wheel disc brakes and
suspension bits from the Lincoln Mark VII parts bin and gave the SVO a Quadra-Shock rear suspension to
tame axle hop. (The V-8 models got Quadra Shock starting in 1985.)
The SVO looked foreign compared to the Mustang GT. Its functional hood scoop was off-center, and its
trunk lid carried a bi-plane spoiler. Alloy wheels had smooth, flush surfaces rather than more traditional
spokes. Inside, the SVO also showed a European influence in its form-fitting bucket seats with lumbar
support. One of the most interesting bits was a turbo boost-control switch on the dash. You could dial it
back to run on regular gas.
Late in the second season, Ford introduced an upgraded SVO that became known as the 1985 ½ . Turbo
boost was hiked slightly to 15 psi, up from 14 psi, and there were other improvements. Horsepower
jumped to 205, matching the V-8, and its 248 lb.-ft. torque ratting was just a bit lower than the V-8.
Just 439 of those mid-year models were made. The enhancements carried into the 1986 model year,
though the engine was rated at 200 hp and 240 lb.-ft. of torque. The zero-to-60 fell to seven seconds
flat, competitive with imported sports models. But it was still a no-sale to muscle car buyers, and sports
car drivers weren't exactly falling over themselves to buy an expensive Mustang.
Today, you don't buy an SVO Mustang to drag race, but you're pretty much assured a lot of attention at
car shows, along with a fun ride.
As for the 2015 Mustang, maybe the time for a turbo-4 has finally come. On the other hand, if budget
allows, get the 435-horsepower V-8.

Zuppa Toscana (better than Olive Garden!)
Yield: 6 servings
Prep time: 20 Minutes
Cook time: 5 Hours, 30 Minutes
Ingredients
1 pound(s) Italian Sausage (spicy)
4-6 Russet Potatoes - bite sized cubes
1 Onion - minced
1/4 cup REAL bacon pieces 2 tablespoons Garlic - minced
32 ounces Chicken Broth
1/2 bunch Kale (or Swiss Chard) - cut/torn into bite sized
pieces
1 cup Heavy Whipping Cream
2 tablespoons Flour
Preparation
1. Brown sausage links in a sauté pan.
2. Cut links in half lengthwise, then cut slices.
3. Place sausage, chicken broth, garlic, potatoes and onion
in slow cooker.
Add just enough water to cover the vegetables and meat.
4. Cook on high 3-4 hours (low 5-6 hours) until potatoes are
soft.
30 minutes before serving:
5. Mix flour into cream removing lumps.
6. Add cream, bacon pieces and kale to the crock pot, stir.
7. Cook on high 30 minutes or until broth thickens slightly.
8. Add salt, pepper, and cayenne to taste.
Santa felt sorry for Greg Shafer getting a
purple shag steering wheel cover at the club
party. So St. Nick got Greg this cool Mustang
instrument cluster, speedometer tells the
temp, the gauge to the left is humidity and to
the right is a clock!

Our very own Roger Goodin contributed an interesting picture of a very unique series

2002 Mustang Cobra
In the United States, the 2002 Cobra was not released for sale. However, about 100 of
these monsters were built and shipped to Australia. Since they were to be utilized in
that country, additional lights were added in the grill (lower bumper), and the steering
wheel was moved to the right side of the car.

Monthly Meetings: David Payne, our re-elected President, has made a special effort to invite special
guests to our monthly meetings. These guests inform us on products and services that enhance our
Mustang experience. He has instituted refreshments at all meetings. Some meetings will be
abbreviated to accommodate our invited speakers. David's goal is to increase attendance,
participation, and to socialize with other club members. All are welcome to come and join our
festivities and meet new people on the second Tuesday each month.

The Derby City Mustang Club was initiated in November 1989 by
a small group of Mustang enthusiasts in the Greater Louisville
area. We hold monthly club meetings and sponsor a monthly car
cruise during the summer months. We enjoy taking our cars out
for Sunday drives as well as attending local cruises and national
car shows. Our cars include everything from Shelby GTs to the
latest Cobra, Saleen, Roush, Mach I and everything in between.
The main purpose of this club is to have fun. Our “September
Stampede” Mustang and All Ford Show is held at Fern Valley
Hotel Louisville, KY and is the highlight of our annual events.
