The “Anchors Aweigh” theme is deeply rooted in the nautical and naval heritage of this Tidewater area of Virginia. The 2014 committee is working hard to bring our members and attendees a great week of fun, competition, learning, and socializing. Our host hotel has a wonderfully accommodating staff who are experienced in offering the best in customer service. The Hampton Roads Convention Center is partnering with the Embassy Suites and will host our indoor events. Our “conflict-free” performance schedule kicks off on Sunday with Herding and Tracking, followed by three Draft Tests over two days. Agility, Obedience, and Rally round out performance. We’re excited to offer attendees the opportunity to compete in as many venues as possible. Go Triathletes! We will be hosting a Welcome Dinner, followed by the exciting Top Twenty event on Tuesday evening, along with a Veteran’s Gala event on Wednesday evening that will be “Sweet as Can Be.” The Health Fund & Berner-Garde Auction will begin with cocktails (cash bar) and time to preview auction items. The fabulous items that will be offered will have you waving your hand to bid. Puppies will be showcased on Tuesday and Wednesday during our Futurity and Sweepstakes events. Regular classes will begin Wednesday and continue through Saturday. Linda Seaver has a wonderful line up for Berner University, and I urge everyone to sign up and attend the classes that are offered. Donna Bennett, a fabulous artist, will be chairing the Photo Contest and will bring her talent to creatively displaying all the photos that show off our dogs in so many ways. This specialty will also be particularly family friendly. The Tidewater area of Virginia offers many different attractions and areas to visit, and Williamsburg offers a peek into the heritage of the United States. Head east and you can visit Norfolk, the largest seaport on the East Coast. A little further east and you will be on the sands and boardwalk of Virginia Beach. Please use the Planning Booklet to learn about all the exciting events scheduled for the week of April 6, 2014, and then you will be ready to sign up and be part of one of the most exciting National Specialties ever. I want to thank everyone now, and will again later, for all the hard work that my team members have been doing and will continue to do over the next several months. See you there! FROM THE BMDCA SPECIALTY COORDINATION TEAM ... After much discussion, the decision was made to include a $5 processing fee on mail in registrations, which is the same amount assessed for those completed online. The primary reason for this change is to save volunteer time with managing data and to allow specialty volunteers better access to data throughout the specialty planning process so they can better manage their events. In the past, we have used an online registration company whose service features include the ability to produce numerous reports that can help with financial decisions relating to the specialty, as well as generation of name tags, class schedules, etc. Data was maintained in this program for online entries, and then merged into a separate program for mail in data after all events were closed to registration. It takes an inordinate amount of volunteer time and money to put on a specialty and it is actually more time intensive for volunteers to manage mail in data than to manage the data from the online registration process. In order to simplify the process of making the data available throughout the registration period and the data "turned around" and documents ready to go after event closing, it made sense to those of us looking at registration options to add a registration fee for the mail in entries and to enter the mail in data to the online system upon receipt. This fee will just cover the cost of using the online registration system, neither the BMDCA or the 2014 specialty will profit from this fee. Online entries have steadily increased over the past several years, with roughly 65% of last year’s entries submitted online. We hope that this fee will not present a financial hardship to anyone; that it will not preclude potential specialty attendees from registering for the events at the national; and that it will make the jobs of the volunteers who are working on the specialty a little easier. 4 2014 SHOW COMMITTEE Show Chairman Assistant Show Chairman Assistant Show Chairman Performance Events Chairman BMDCA Specialty Coordinator Agility Announcer Banquets Berner University Catalog Ads/Production Catalog Marked Catalog Sales Conformation Chief Steward Dog Food Coordinator Draft Tests Emergency Response Coordinator Fundraising BMDCA Futurity Grooming Grounds (Outside) Health Clinics Health Fund & Berner-Garde Auction AHBA Herding Tests/Trials Hotel Liaison International Guest Reception Judges’ Hospitality Junior Showmanship BMDCA Specialty Logistics Newsletter Obedience Parades Photo Contest Planning Booklet Requests Raffle Rally Registration Onsite BMDCA Specialty Registration Rescue Gallery RV Special Mtgs/Hotel Liaison BMDCA Specialty Store Online TDI/CGC Top Twenty Tracking BMDCA Specialty Treasurer Trophy Vendor Operations Ways & Means BMDCA Specialty Website Welcome Bags Jennifer Donnelly-Schoffstall (703) 405-2276 [email protected] Sherry Von Engel (757) 870-7899 [email protected] Julie Barry (757) 410-4437 [email protected] Julie Bacon [email protected] Dottie Schulte [email protected] Meg Schwartz [email protected] Randal Lee Dowler [email protected] Julie Barry [email protected] Linda Seaver [email protected] Joanne Gerow [email protected] Dawn Hitchcock (Piedmont BMDC) [email protected] Andrea Stefanac [email protected] Jane Haefner [email protected] Nick Von Engel [email protected] Nancy & Jerry Pixton [email protected] Kim Bowman [email protected] Jennifer Donnelly-Schoffstall [email protected] Sharon Keefer [email protected] Sindi Leo [email protected] Skip Seibert [email protected] Sherri Antonucci [email protected] Elizabeth Fletcher [email protected] Toby Erlichman [email protected] Julie Barry [email protected] Tracey Keith [email protected] Tabitha Logan Spencer [email protected] Dawn Cox [email protected] Sandy Dunaway [email protected] Mary-Ann Bowman [email protected] Ruth Nielsen [email protected] Wendy Keene & Natalie Brock [email protected] Donna Bennett [email protected] Dawn Hitchcock [email protected] Deborah Reams [email protected] Beki Gieseke [email protected] Denise McClure [email protected] Janet Tiderington [email protected] Sandy Dunaway [email protected] Nell Ward [email protected] Mike Von Engel [email protected] Julie Barry [email protected] Susan Henderson [email protected] Jim Barrett [email protected] Murray Johnston [email protected] Dottie Schulte [email protected] Denise McClure [email protected] Martin Kaufman [email protected] Molly Bass [email protected] Susan McCullouch [email protected] Sherry Von Engel [email protected] Ann Milligan [email protected] Fara Bushnell [email protected] Georgeann Reeve [email protected] 5 TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS THURSDAY, APRIL 10 Registration & Help Desk at CC* Photo Contest at CC* Concourse Rescue Gallery at CC* Concourse Berner-Garde at CC* Obedience Trial at CC* Regular Conformation (Dog Classes) at CC* (continued) Non-regular Stud Dog/Brace/Team Classes at CC* Parade of Titleholders during Lunch Break at CC* Veteran Dog Classes at CC* (following Non-Regular Dog Classes) Regular Conformation (Bitch Classes) at CC* (following Veteran Dog Classes) Team Obedience Health Fund & Berner-Garde Auction at CC* Ballroom A SUNDAY, APRIL 6 Registration & Help Desk at Hotel 4:00pm AHBA Herding Test/Trials 1 & 2 at Cheswood Farm AKC Tracking Test Monday, April 7 Registration & Help Desk at Hotel Photo Contest at CC* Concourse Rescue Gallery at CC* Concourse BMDCA Board Meeting at Hotel Board Room Berner University at CC* Rooms 102, 103, 106,107 Draft Test #1 at 5 Green Hill Ln, Hampton Vendor Move-In at CC* 12:00pm Grooming Area Opens 2:00pm Breeders Symposium at Hotel Mercury Ballroom TUESDAY, APRIL 8 Registration & Help Desk at Hotel Photo Contest at CC* Concourse Rescue Gallery at CC* Concourse Berner-Garde at CC* Berner University at CC* Rooms 102, 103, 106,107 Draft Tests #2 and # At 7:45pm, the Top Twenty ring will be opened to dinner attendees as well as to the general public to view the final showcase of the Top Twenty dogs and presentation of awards to the top winners. This event will be both entertaining and exciting as the top dogs and their handlers perform choreographed routines to music representing the unique personality of the individual dog. We consider this a formal event, therefore “proper black tie attire” is encouraged. Become a “Star Gazer” by purchasing a star to honor your top dog or dogs, both in past years as well as 2014, living or in your heart. Each star will list the honored dog as well as the sponsor. The stars, available at $20 per star, will adorn the Top Twenty ring to honor those dogs who have contributed to the excellence of our breed. Go to the specialty store at http://www.bmdca-store.com to purchase a star for each of your favorites! 25 2014 BERNER UNIVERSITY REGISTRATION – MAIL IN FORM If you are participating in Berner University, complete and print this form, then transfer the total amount due to the Master Registration Form and submit the forms together.
