WELCOME
Together with my co-chairs, Sherry Von Engel, Julie Barry, and Performance Chair Julie Bacon, we are excited
to be hosting the 2014 BMDCA National Specialty in Hampton, Virginia. The “Anchors Aweigh” theme is
deeply rooted in the nautical and naval heritage of this Tidewater area of Virginia.
The 2014 committee is working hard to bring our members and attendees a great week of fun, competition,
learning, and socializing. Our host hotel has a wonderfully accommodating staff who are experienced in
offering the best in customer service. The Hampton Roads Convention Center is partnering with the Embassy
Suites and will host our indoor events.
Our “conflict-free” performance schedule kicks off on Sunday with Herding and Tracking, followed by three
Draft Tests over two days. Agility, Obedience, and Rally round out performance. We’re excited to offer
attendees the opportunity to compete in as many venues as possible. Go Triathletes!
We will be hosting a Welcome Dinner, followed by the exciting Top Twenty event on Tuesday evening, along
with a Veteran’s Gala event on Wednesday evening that will be “Sweet as Can Be.”
The Health Fund & Berner-Garde Auction will begin with cocktails (cash bar) and time to preview auction
items. The fabulous items that will be offered will have you waving your hand to bid.
Puppies will be showcased on Tuesday and Wednesday during our Futurity and Sweepstakes events. Regular
classes will begin Wednesday and continue through Saturday.
Linda Seaver has a wonderful line up for Berner University, and I urge everyone to sign up and attend the
classes that are offered. Donna Bennett, a fabulous artist, will be chairing the Photo Contest and will bring her
talent to creatively displaying all the photos that show off our dogs in so many ways.
This specialty will also be particularly family friendly. The Tidewater area of Virginia offers many different
attractions and areas to visit, and Williamsburg offers a peek into the heritage of the United States. Head east
and you can visit Norfolk, the largest seaport on the East Coast. A little further east and you will be on the
sands and boardwalk of Virginia Beach.
Please use the Planning Booklet to learn about all the exciting events scheduled for the week of April 6, 2014,
and then you will be ready to sign up and be part of one of the most exciting National Specialties ever.
I want to thank everyone now, and will again later, for all the hard work that my team members have been
doing and will continue to do over the next several months. See you there!

FROM THE BMDCA SPECIALTY COORDINATION TEAM ...
After much discussion, the decision was made to include a $5 processing fee on mail in registrations, which is the same amount assessed for
those completed online. The primary reason for this change is to save volunteer time with managing data and to allow specialty volunteers
better access to data throughout the specialty planning process so they can better manage their events.
In the past, we have used an online registration company whose service features include the ability to produce numerous reports that can
help with financial decisions relating to the specialty, as well as generation of name tags, class schedules, etc. Data was maintained in
this program for online entries, and then merged into a separate program for mail in data after all events were closed to registration. It takes
an inordinate amount of volunteer time and money to put on a specialty and it is actually more time intensive for volunteers to manage mail
in data than to manage the data from the online registration process. In order to simplify the process of making the data available
throughout the registration period and the data "turned around" and documents ready to go after event closing, it made sense to those of us
looking at registration options to add a registration fee for the mail in entries and to enter the mail in data to the online system upon receipt.
This fee will just cover the cost of using the online registration system, neither the BMDCA or the 2014 specialty will profit from this
fee. Online entries have steadily increased over the past several years, with roughly 65% of last year’s entries submitted online.
We hope that this fee will not present a financial hardship to anyone; that it will not preclude potential specialty attendees from registering
for the events at the national; and that it will make the jobs of the volunteers who are working on the specialty a little easier.

RAFFLE
Why not make part of your 2014 Specialty preparation donating a raffle basket? This year we are also doing a
silent auction with the raffle, so we need even more great items to reach our goal. Theme baskets are always
popular, whether filled with state or regional foods and souvenirs, regional club clothing, grooming tools and
supplies from local vendors, or dog toys and treats. Other popular items include drafting, agility, obedience
and herding equipment, crates, dog show needs (travel crates, dollies, portable chairs), anything Swiss
(collars, leads, clothing, clocks, antique bells, horns), dog beds, grooming tables, tubs and dryers, dog
portraits, books, gift certificates for catalog items or national chain stores or restaurants, and "Bernerabilia" of
all sorts. Items that are won are always a treasure to the winner!
Please consider making a donation to the raffle – on your own or joining forces with friends, local club
members, or training groups. Not feeling creative? – we’ll gladly accept your cash donations as well.
Monetary donations can be included on the Master Registration or sent separately, made payable to BMDCA
2014. Contributions of all sizes are greatly appreciated! If you are donating an item, please notify us in
advance, and plan to bring it with you or mail/ship it by March 21st to:

The 2014 Committee is pleased to announce that LONGSHOTS will be in Hampton Roads. Pat Long, Joye Neff,

for Berner Charities.
For the suggested donation of $50.00, you will receive approximately 25 photos of your dog(s), a CD copy of
all the photos, and a print of at least one of them. All of the money will go to Bernese Mountain Dog charities;
Longshots donates all of the services and materials. No reservations are needed; it's first come, first served,
although elderly or ill dogs jump to the front of the line.
Longshots portrait photos make a perfect gift for Mother's Day, birthdays, a thank you gift to your breeder, or
simply a gift to yourself to enjoy. Be sure to drop by!
Longshots will be in the Convention Center, in close proximity to grooming, conformation ring, and vendors.

HEALTH FUND & BERNER-GARDE AUCTION
Please mark your calendar for Thursday, April 10th—it's our annual health fundraiser for our breed! We
promise a night of fun with extraordinary items for this year's auction. Our elves have already begun
conjuring up items for the auction, and we can promise that this year's event will be one of the best ever. Be
sure to attend for a night that always puts the FUN in Fundraising! Cash bar and auction item viewing opens
at 7:00pm, auction begins at 7:30. Proceeds and any donations will be split between the BMDCA Health Fund
(not tax deductible) or Berner-Garde (tax deductible).
We are looking for many generous donations of auction items by Berner fanciers everywhere. Some
outstanding Berner-related items have already been donated, but we still need others. Also consider making
a cash donation to the auction. These donations are NOT tax deductible, but will help fund the cost of items
that need to be framed or items that need sponsors. With your donation we will donate a Berner item in your
name to the 2014 Health Fund & Berner-Garde Auction.
Address any questions about the auction or donations to the 2014 Health Fund & Berner-Garde Auction to
Elizabeth Fletcher at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you at the Auction on
Thursday night!
INTERNATIONAL GUEST RECEPTION
Welcome to all Foreign Guests! The BMDCA will host an informal get together at the Convention Center with
our international attendees in order to socialize and introduce ourselves on Tuesday, April 8th, at the
conclusion of daytime judging. We will enjoy a light snack while giving a short introduction to the US show
procedures, followed by a “Question & Answer” session.
US members who wish to mingle with our guests are most welcome, but will be required to pay a small fee.
See the Master Registration for sign-up. Contact Tracey Keith at [email protected] for questions.

Berner-Garde is once again sponsoring a BMD Repository clinic. We would love to see you and your Berner in
Hampton! Trained vet techs and veterinarians will be on hand to do simple DNA cheek swab and blood draw
samples throughout the day. No appointments are necessary and it's easy, quick, and FREE! It’s a wonderful
way for you and your Berner to provide valuable information to aid future health research. Each dog that
provides a blood and DNA cheek-swab sample at the event will receive a special gift.
Calling All Veterans!
Veteran dogs and their owners will receive a special gift from Berner-Garde for each blood and cheek swab
sample submitted. Because veterans have a wealth of health information to share, Berner-Garde will provide
an additional unique gift to each veteran dog that provides a blood and cheek swab sample.
Berner-Garde Site Operators will be on hand throughout the week at the Berner-Garde booth to record
updates in the database. Please do your part to further Berner-health research by participating in the BMD

DRAFT
Join the Berner Cruise along Hampton Roads!
There will be three BMDCA Draft Tests at the 2014 National Specialty. Each test will offer Novice, Brace Novice,
Open, and Brace Open classes with a limit of 24 entries in each test. The Specialty Draft Tests are limited to
Bernese Mountain Dogs only. All three tests will be held at 5 Green Hill Lane, which is 0.8 miles from the
Hampton Roads Convention Center. There will be a single Equipment Check for each Test and a separate
Equipment Check for the Alternates each day. Entrants will need a DNA Profile number, as well as a BernerGarde number (for recording Draft titles). Every effort will be made to assign each dog one opportunity to
compete before any second entries are assigned. Handlers entering a dog in more than one class must identify
their entry priority (e.g., 1st choice: Open, 2nd choice: Novice). Premium lists will be available for download on
the BMDCA website. To request a hard copy by mail, contact Tina Johnson at [email protected] or
Jerry Pixton at [email protected]. Tina Johnson will be accepting entries for all three tests as the Lead Draft
Test Secretary.
For more information, contact the Draft Test Co-Chairs, Jerry Pixton at [email protected] or Nan Pixton at
[email protected], phone (540) 465-3787.
**IMPORTANT** A dog may enter each eligible class only once with a choice of Test Day (e.g., Monday Only,
Tuesday Only, or Either Day. Untitled (in the class entered) teams have
preference over Titled teams who have preference over Advanced Titled
teams. A Brace team is not considered “titled” until both dogs are “titled”.

CONFORMATION EVENTS
Regular and non-regular conformation, sweepstakes, and futurity classes will be held indoors in the Hampton
Roads Convention Center. See premium list for eligibility requirements.
VERSATILITY SHOWCASE
This stand-alone conformation competition will showcase dogs and bitches that have received the BMDCA
Versatility Award. Classes will be offered for Versatility/Versatility Excellent, Dogs/Bitches Under 7 Years and 7
Years and Over, with Best in Versatility chosen from the eight class winners. Intact and altered dogs ARE
eligible to compete. Since this showcase is a Special Attraction, dogs or bitches judged first in these
classes will NOT be eligible for Best of Breed by virtue of having won these classes. See premium list
for eligibility requirements.
TOP TWENTY GALA
Join us for a Night with the Stars at the BMDCA’s second Top Twenty Gala, which will be held the evening of
Tuesday, April 8th. This event will showcase the top conformation dogs from 2013. Entry is by invitation only
and is sent to the top 20 Bernese Mountain Dogs in breed and all-breed points, as determined by AKC
statistics from January 1st through December 31, 2013.
Dogs will be prejudged by a three-judge panel the afternoon prior to the gala event. Each judge will evaluate
the dogs on a predetermined point system, enumerating the criteria of our breed standard. The emphasis for
judging is on the individual qualities of the dog and how closely he/she conforms to the breed standard.
Points will be tabulated once the prejudging is completed, and the winner will be announced at the
conclusion of the Night with the Stars gala. In addition, attendees will also have the opportunity to vote for
the People’s Choice Award.
The Top Twenty competition will culminate at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hall A. The 2014
Welcome Dinner will precede the event in the same venue, beginning at 6:00pm. At 7:45pm, the Top Twenty
ring will be opened to dinner attendees as well as to the general public to view the final showcase of the Top
Twenty dogs and presentation of awards to the top winners. This event will be both entertaining and exciting
as the top dogs and their handlers perform choreographed routines to music representing the unique
personality of the individual dog. We consider this a formal event, therefore “proper black tie attire” is
encouraged.
Become a “Star Gazer” by purchasing a star to honor your top dog or dogs, both in past years as well as 2014,
living or in your heart. Each star will list the honored dog as well as the sponsor. The stars, available at $20 per
star, will adorn the Top Twenty ring to honor those dogs who have contributed to the excellence of our breed.
Go to the specialty store at http://www.bmdca-store.com to purchase a star for each of your favorites!
