Born out of a collision of ocean plates some 75 million years
ago, the swath of land in western North America was crumpled
and thrust upward, creating the Rocky Mountains. From their
humble beginnings in the dense Sierra Madre forests of central

affording it the distinction of being a region for

Dramatically set on the bend of the river,
the relaxed centre of Cahors dates back to
Gallo-Roman times. Once the capital of the
Quercy region, it’s circled by a ring of hills,
sits surrounded by some of the region's finest

Medieval Valentré ridge.
WINE
Possibly one of France’s best undiscovered red
wines, the Cahors wines come from one of the
oldest vineyards in France. Still producing the
rare and original French Malbec, the so-called
black wines of Cahors are inky dark, strong
and rich. Called Auxerrois or Côte Noire in
France, those to consider are Château Famaey,
Château du Cèdre and Rigal.
As far as gateways go, the Lot Region is probably one of the best;

Cinque Terre is a hiker's dream, come true. A colourful quintet
of fairytale villages connected by footpaths, ferries and trains,
teetering on cliff ledges precariously balanced over the crashing
Mediterranean below. Unhindered by the steepness of the cliff
faces, the residents of this region have literally and figuratively
carved out a life for themselves in the staggeringly-steep sea cliffs.
A life lived here is one of simplicity, serenity and the sea.
A tour taken here is one of hinterland hikes, beautiful seascapes
and extraordinary gastronomy. Not only is the land steeped and
cultivated for years into incredible terraces, but this region is also

Constant sun, golden beaches, Greek influences, ancient history,
rich agriculture and fruit-laden lands; what’s not to love? Puglia
boasts it all. With its strategic location on the water, the heel of
the Italian boot was invaded by numerous dynasties, each leaving
its mark on the land and culture. Romans, Saracens, feudal lords
and the Spanish have graciously left their Medieval towns and
Romanesque churches, their Baroque piazzas and white-washed
decor, for the Pugliese to call their own.
The pastoral countryside is dotted with curious conical constructs
known as trulli. With various theories cast about as to their
origin, we won't attempt our own rudimentary conclusion as to
their existence, suffice it to say they offer a unique beauty to an

patchwork of the rolling Val d’Orcia, as well as

SPECTACLE
The famous Palio di Siena takes place twice
each year in the summer in the Piazza del Campo

CORK
Alentejo has thousands of miles of natural cork
forests. There is enough cork in the forests
of Portugal to last more than 100 years, and
under a reforestation program, these cork
forests are growing by 4% a year. Its most
widespread use is as the humble wine closure,
a use that began in the 17th Century when
Dom Perignon chose the bark of the cork oak
as the chosen sealant for his champagne.

EAT
The Portuguese Tart. This resourceful golden
nugget came out of the leftover egg yolks once
the whites were used for starching monastic
clothing in the 18th Century. It’s light, it’s

And not for the faint of heart is the macabre
crypt of Capela dos Ossos. Built in the 16th
Century, the Chapel of Bones warns at its
entrance, "We, the bones that are here, await

skulls of around 5,000 former Évora residents.
