Thoughtful Stewardship HOSPICE GIVING FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Message from the Board Chair When I joined Hospice Giving Foundation’s board in 2011, I knew I had a personal reason and connection. My late husband Bob received wonderful care from hospice. I hoped by joining this board I would be able to contribute in ways that helped such services flourish in our community. Over these years, this Foundation has proved to be more than I could have imagined. It is such an honor to now be serving the first year of my two-year term as Board Chair. The board is composed of intelligent and dedicated members who come together for all the right reasons in support of our mission. This past year, the Foundation hosted wonderful events, supported innovative approaches to end-oflife care, and had thoughtful conversations about how to strategically advance our mission. Board Chair Nanci Markey and President & CEO Siobhan Greene. Last spring, I served as chair of the Grants committee and met with each agency requesting funding. During those visits I learned more about the scope of services for patients and families facing end of life. I saw firsthand the inspiring degree of professionalism and dedication of these agencies in serving the people of our community. With gratitude for the involvement of our board and staff and with deep respect for the agencies working to serve our community, I ask you to continue with us on our journey to help support dignified and compassionate end-of-life services in our community. Message from the President and CEO If you have ever made a big change in your life, you know the excitement and anticipation that come at the beginning. You wonder what will transpire, how it will all go, and even if you’ll ever really feel at home. When I came to Hospice Giving Foundation in 2013, I was very excited, but knew I had a lot to learn and understand. I knew this work had an important place in my heart, yet I know, as with any new job, only time would tell if I was the right fit. As we close 2015, I can say with absolute sincerity that I’ve found my place. The people I have met have been inspiring and enlightening. The loyalty and deep, personal commitment of our donors are striking. Those providing the care are filled with kindness and dedication, despite the difficulty of the work they do. The team I work with day in and day out are professionals who always act with thought, focus, and warmth. I have the honor of serving with smart and committed individuals on our Board of Directors. So yes, I feel like I am at home; I feel deeply fulfilled knowing what good work this Foundation supports. Board 2015-2016 Hospice Giving Foundation is honored to help our community by awarding grants for a broad scope of end-of-life care. Our gratitude for this privilege is deep and heartfelt. To our donors, partners, board, and friends, thank you for being a part of the compassion that connects us. Board Members: Staff (l. to r.) Volunteers are selfless people. Totally selfless. They don’t volunteer to get their names on a letterhead. They’re extraordinary! You’ve received the Kendall Inspiration Award. Can you tell me a little bit about it? It’s given to recognize service in honor of Betty Kendall’s husband, a former Board member. an interview with Beverley Ambort Beverley Ambort lived all over the world before coming to Carmel. No matter where she was, she maintained a commitment to charity. After caring for a close friend who had cancer, Beverley decided to focus her commitment on hospice care. Since that time she has been a volunteer, fundraiser, board member, and above all, a caregiver. When did you first volunteer for hospice? When my husband and I transferred here from Europe and retired, I had been in Florida helping a dear friend, Jane, who had been diagnosed with cancer. There was no hospice available, so I went to help take care of her. After Jane died, I took the local hospice training course. I thought they would assign me to the facility in Carmel Valley. But, the director said we need you in the Resource Center. I worked there and also helped Friends of Hospice raise money, including $250,000 for Hospice House (now Westland House). What kind of work do you do and how often do you volunteer? The Health Resource Center has been in different locations and is now part of Community Hospital. I volunteer two afternoons a week. We fit clients with wigs, loan books, and we access information that helps the public to find the right resources. It’s a valuable service. I understand you’ve been a board member? I have been a volunteer for 28 years. I was invited to join the Hospice Foundation Board and served for six years. I’ve helped raise money and public awareness, and worked on projects. I have included the Foundation in my estate plan. How would you describe Hospice Giving Foundation and their role in supporting hospice care? Without the grants the Foundation gives to organizations, many programs would have a hard time existing. Many of these groups don’t have staff to fundraise. The Foundation is a very important organization to them. In the past, many people have donated from their estates. It’s time now to reach out to people who can give to a charity and want to help. Has volunteering for hospice been important to you? Oh, it really has. After Jane died, I dropped all the organizations I had supported and focused on hospice. A Page 2 :: Hospice Giving Foundation :: hospicegiving.org :: Annual Report 2015 What would you say to someone who was asking why they should support Hospice Giving Foundation? One needs to think about and recognize that we all die. It’s such a traumatic time. Hospice Giving Foundation is there to make sure one has care, comfort, and every resource that’s available at the end of life. Hospice Giving Foundation makes this possible. To me, it’s one of the most important organizations that exists in our community. Often people don’t know where to turn when they need help, and the Foundation supports so many kinds of care. It’s important to publicize its function to the community. They can help you, and there’s a way the public can help in turn. It’s comforting to know that I can continue to honor my dear friend. Hospice Care It takes a special person who can help minimize the suffering of a loved one. ~ Brian Corley Hospice care has been providing patients with compassionate care at the end of life since the 1960s. Focused on pain management and the emotional and physical needs of people in the last six months of life, this care brings relief and a sense of dignity to patients and their families. Hospice care includes spiritual support, the help of welltrained volunteers, and may include ancillary therapies such as massage, music, and art. 2015 Grants Awarded for Hospice Care: Funding Hospice Care: $450,000 Since its inception, Hospice Giving Foundation has contributed over $15 million to support hospice care in Monterey and San Benito Counties. Module 4: Wishes and Memories Hospice Giving Foundation :: 80 Garden Court, Suite 201 :: Monterey CA 93940 :: hospicegiving.org Palliative Care Palliative care is a term not well understood. It is a specialized medical approach for people with serious illnesses and differs from hospice care. In recent years, palliative care has been more available to patients and their families in our community. Hospice Giving Foundation is proud to fund several local providers, and we are encouraged to see innovative approaches to this important element of end-of-life care. Once available only in hospitals, palliative care is being developed for outpatient settings and community-based programs. Palliative care focuses on the patient, not simply the disease. Seriously ill patients are cared for holistically, with a team that includes a physician, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and others. The goal is to improve the quality of life through symptom relief, pain and stress management, and strong family support. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment. Funding Palliative Care: Since its inception, Hospice Giving Foundation has contributed over $2 million to support palliative care in Monterey and San Benito Counties. Hospice Giving Foundation Grants allow agencies to: ̥̥ Dedicate a trained physician to palliative-care service ̥̥ Provide spiritual care through a chaplain experienced in palliative care ̥̥ Pay for continuing education for a palliative care physician and the team of professionals ̥̥ Make home nursing care visits and provide needed at-home medical equipment ̥̥ Conduct team planning sessions to coordinate care ̥̥ Conduct physician outreach and education to expand the understanding, use, and acceptance of palliative care Create Possibilities: Plan Now Hospice Giving Foundation and the agencies it funds are expanding access to choices for end-of-life care. Over time we’ve seen innovation and expansion of services happen through the generosity of donors who make it possible through planned giving. Planned giving provides you with options for your philanthropic goals. You drive the process in a way that works best for you and, by doing so, you make our community a place that defines exceptional and dignified care at the end of life. ̥̥ ̥̥ ̥̥ ̥̥ Establish a legacy for yourself and your loved ones. Express gratitude for the care your family member received by giving back, so that care is available broadly in our community. Show your compassion for your friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Help ensure they too have the highest quality care possible—when they need it and how they need it. Become a part of the Foundation’s vision to make our community a place where living well includes dying peacefully, in comfort, and with dignity. 2015 Grants Awarded to Support Adult Palliative Care:* $145,000 Central Coast VNA & Hospice Hazel Hawkins Hospital Natividad Medical Center Goal for 2016: $400,000 * Children’s Palliative Care listed on page 15 Planned gifts are an investment in our community and can help you prepare for your future. In addition, Brian has long been a trained hospice counselor. At the age of 83, he is still giving advice and solace to people facing the end of life. Brian could hardly be more generous with both his time and his financial support. Still, he offers more: he has a rare gift for bringing comfort to others, as we found when we sat down with him recently. When Brian talks about the end of life and the importance of compassionate care, he draws on deep insights gained from his own suffering. In 1979, Brian and Patricia Kelly learned that Patricia had renal cell carcinoma, a disease that only rarely occurs in women, and one with a low survival rate. Brian was on the Hospice (Giving) Foundation board for almost 20 years. He began when our ancestor organization was a small 6-bed hospice provider in Carmel Valley. He remained involved through the capital campaign to build what is now Westland House. Then he was pivotal in the negotiations to sell the asset and program to Community Hospital, so that the Foundation could be formed to serve a broader purpose. Through the years, he has served in many other ways, including as a construction engineer, offering his skills at no charge to us, other nonprofits, and churches. “Once we learned what the odds were, we agreed that we didn’t want chemotherapy. We didn’t want to drag the kids through this, with only five percent chance of survival. It would have been really very difficult on them. Difficult enough as it was. So you make these choices as you go along.” Still, “she was able to survive from that point, not two months, but seven, maybe eight months.” In part, Brian credits it to friends and neighbors, especially those who knew how to offer the kind of support Patricia needed. reach in and be where you are. And that’s what I learned as well. How to come and be where she is, not my demanding her to come and be where I am.” Brian learned to screen his wife’s visitors, watching for “the difference between someone who took energy and someone who gave.” He would fend off the former and welcome the latter. He also had to face his own fear of losing her, to prevent it being a barrier to helping her. “You see your wife dying slowly, and part “How do you respond? How do you do it?” Brian remembers asking himself those questions over and over. Now, he says, “Everything is your response, your response to what you had been dealt.” The first thing Brian did was to devote himself to being Patricia’s advocate. “I said, ‘What would you like me to do for you? You’re the one going through this.’ “She said, ‘You go out and find all the options. You be my cheerleader.’ So that became my role.” Doctors had given Patricia two months to live. Brian explored every option to save, or at least extend, her life—although some, they rejected. Page 10 :: Hospice Giving Foundation :: hospicegiving.org :: Annual Report 2015 He fondly remembers a woman who died recently at the age of 97, who would come and sit with Patricia, and sometimes sing to her. of you... psychologically, you’re trying to protect yourself. But yet, you’re trying to provide her all of her needs and to sacrifice what’s going on within yourself.” “She brought a warmth and a love, and it became so apparent that she came to give it away. She came to be with you, and to Brian found that Patricia herself became his teacher in how to face the prospect of life ending. “As the disease progressed, I would have to change. I noticed that she was in a different place, maybe multiple times during the day. And it required me to get in where she was, asking the right questions, being totally observant. She really taught me how to get there.” “It was incredibly powerful... for me to walk alongside this lovely lady in her journey, and supporting her, and encouraging her, and watching her progress, her spiritual progress.” Even as they struggled for her life, Patricia and Brian found strength in acceptance, of whatever came. What came brought much suffering. But it also led to what Brian now calls grace. He describes it in terms of their shared Catholic faith, although he emphasizes that he believes grace is there for people of all faiths—or no faith. “’When I become weak and I allow God’s grace to come in, I become strong,’ he says, quoting St. Paul. “If we are open to the grace, it can come in many different ways.” “I’ve kind of dropped the word ‘religious.’ I’ve dropped the word ‘Muslim,’ or ‘Christian, or ‘Jewish,’ or whatever. We all have within us a—call it an on-board computer, call it spirituality. We have to access it. Who are we? What is it all about?” What it’s about, Brian concluded, is giving. When Patricia died, Brian says, he was “numb, for probably two or three months.” One day, though, “It dawned on me. When we put the casket in the ground, half of me was in there. It was all of our expectations, all of our hopes, all of the stuff... I was totally—psychologically, I was totally different.” “The pivotal thing, which [had] totally changed my life, was… learning to give away what I had for the need of someone else.” “In a sense, part of this journey was waking up.” For 20 years, Brian had lived with a woman It was another lesson from Patricia. “If she survived this, she wanted to go help people who were going through what she was going through… and I realized wow, I’ve been trained to do what she wanted to do.” That’s what Brian has done, ever since, and more. In addition to all the contributions he’s made to Hospice Giving Foundation, in each of its incarnations, he has helped build the National Steinbeck Center and “The culture [is] kind of pulling this way which is, “Okay, we don’t have to worry about death. That’s way down the road.” But Brian found happiness by going through suffering. “It was a gift. You get tremendous strength from it. You become a better person—but only if you experience the full depths of it. If you go through the process, whatever that might mean to you, you come out a better person.” Then, for him, happiness did come. “Go out and live a life that has depth to it.” he deeply loved, and now she was gone. And yet, though his suffering was terrible, he now feels that it also brought him a gift. Through taking care of Patricia, “I had experienced sacrificial love, which is real love, in a sense.” He had discovered the purpose that has driven his life ever since. In 1983, at the age of 51, he retired from a successful career with Granite Construction. “I loved what I did with Granite. If I had stayed with it, who knows? But there was such a draw to... you need to get out and give away what you’ve learned through this journey, which is basically love, helping others in their particular journey.” “It’s how you live your life. Go out and live a life that has depth to it, because you’ve been given all the gifts.” “Do something that you believe in, and give what you’ve learned. What is done to you, give it away… and you’re happy to do it.” “It was through suffering that I found deeper love.” the Salinas headquarters of the Boys and Girls Clubs, helped renovate and reinforce churches and missions, and done other good work all over the Central Coast. Often, he works with his second wife, Marcia, whom he married in 1982. Like Brian, Marcia has long been active in serving the community, and shares his commitment to our Foundation. Always, Brian says, they both find that they get back more than they give. The question, he says, is, “Where do I get my happiness?” Many people expect happiness to be given to them, by a good marriage, success, entertainment, or drink or drugs—all while avoiding suffering. Hospice Giving Foundation :: hospicegiving.org :: Annual Report 2015 :: Page 11 Tree of Life 2015 During the holiday season, people look for ways to reflect on and to remember loved ones. Tree of Life Celebrations bring people together to honor family, friends, and the people who bring meaning to our lives. Trees of Life, each illuminated with hundreds of white lights dedicated to loved ones, shone brightly each night throughout the holiday season in Salinas, Monterey, and King City. Over $63,000 was raised to help local agencies continue providing dignified and compassionate end-of-life care in our community. I have attended every Tree of Life Celebration since it started, except for last year. This year’s celebration by far was one of the most beautiful celebrations I have ever attended. ~Anonymous Page 12 :: Hospice Giving Foundation :: hospicegiving.org :: Annual Report 2015 In the tradition of the holiday spirit... an interview with Janine Chicourrat & Rene Boscoff Janine Chicourrat and Rene Boscoff, General Managers of the Portola Hotel and Spa and the Monterey Marriott, respectively, have for many years supported the Hospice Giving Foundation Tree of Life Celebrations. How did you two become involved with the Tree of Life celebration? RB: When I came here in 1997, the Marriott Hotel was already participating in the event— we would assist the Foundation with setting up the big Christmas tree, inviting people to participate, and helping raise money. We were excited to help. JC: I actually got involved just a couple of years ago. The Conference Center had traditionally been in partnership with the Marriott for this big tree-lighting event, and the Foundation wanted to explore a new space that was more visible. I didn’t know much about the event until then, just that the Marriott had a great big tree on top of their hotel. Later, my husband reminded me that for years he’s bought an ornament to support Hospice Giving Foundation. Can you tell me what goes into having the tree on top of the Marriott Hotel? RB: To most it doesn’t look like a big deal. We just put a tree on top of the hotel, decorate it, and we’re all set. But behind the scenes, there’re all sorts of intricate details that my Director of Engineering has down to a science. The key point is that you want to make sure the tree stays on top of the hotel. And I know that’s funny, but it’s a real concern—some years we’ve had winds as strong as 50, 60 miles per hour. So, to ensure that the tree doesn’t become Mary Poppins and start flying through downtown, we spend a fair amount of time on the securing process. I need to have total assurance that even if we get hurricane winds, the tree is secure. And then—every year—the timing of getting the lights on creates a kind of anxiety, not for the people watching but for the general manager of the Marriott Hotel. We have one person on the roof, and our engineer in the crowd, talking via radio to make sure the timing is impeccable, so that when we say, “Ok, everybody, look up!” the lights go on. It’s always fun creating the little extra oomph for the event. What about the tree in the Portola lobby and the program? What goes into preparing for that? JC: First of all, Hospice Giving Foundation does all the heavy lifting. They coordinate the entire program and create a spectacular event. From the hotel’s perspective, it’s relatively simple for us to be involved. I give all the credit to the Foundation for all the work they do, especially the entertainment. We have so much talent in this community. To see our military in full uniform performing for people from all walks of life is something special. The Camerata Singers are incredible and when the young children come in and sing, it reminds you how quickly life goes by and how you need to value it. What about the tone of this event compared to others that you’re involved with? JC: You’re really inviting your community into your hotel, and they’re there to honor people they’ve lost. It’s not about the commercialization that happens in the world today; it’s more about remembering your loved ones and supporting a wonderful foundation. RB: That’s an excellent point. Many of our staff live locally, and everyone can, whatever their age, resonate with somebody who has passed. I think there’s a great emotional tie because of that, one they all appreciate being part of. Are there any experiences you’d like to share? JC: That my husband has throughout the years gotten an ornament in honor of his father— and seeing the difference between hospice care and Hospice Giving Foundation. Understanding the importance of the Foundation is something that’s been eye-opening for me. I hope the community understands the importance and value of it. RB: For me, I got a much better understanding and appreciation after my father-in-law passed, because his last six months of life were very difficult for the whole family. He was in and out of hospitals, though he was mostly at home. My wife spent about six weeks there, sharing with me every evening what happened during the day. And I’ve got to tell you, he received hospice care, and it was exceptional. They kept him as comfortable as possible during this time. It was a very emotional experience, and a huge learning curve as far as what a terrific support hospice care is. I’ve never looked at hospice the same way since. I have a very deep appreciation for what the service does. What do you notice in the reactions of the people who come to events like Tree of Life? JC: There’s a peacefulness, in terms of the way the feeling is in the room. I’m not sure there’s a better way to describe it. RB: That’s a great word to use for it— peacefulness. It’s really beautiful, and once you attend, it’s very hard not to feel the love and the peace that is being experienced. Has this helped you to think about your own planning? JC: Unfortunately I had some very young friends die of cancer. They had hospice care and the professionalism and the care of the actual caregivers—I mean, I couldn’t do that job. They’re so compassionate and they’re so giving. When you go through a process with someone who’s very close to you, you realize how fortunate we are to have that in our community. RB: I guess my realization is, “Thank God for hospice,” and come the day it’s time to go, I hope they are available. None of us gets to choose the end of life, but if it were to be due to an illness, I am just grateful they’re available. Frankly, it does create peace of mind. How would you describe the Tree of Life celebration to a friend you wanted to invite to attend? RB: My question would be, “Do you have family members who have passed?” At my age, most of us do. And I would invite them to attend this event because I’m not sure I would be eloquent enough to describe the emotional experience. I am very much convinced that once someone has attended, they will want to make this an annual experience. JC: Yes, I would say, step away from your holiday gift buying and parties, and come do something that is really in the tradition of the holiday spirit. RB: The holidays really bring out a bigger question: do you want to be remembered by your family and friends by what you gave them, or by what you brought into their lives? Any final thoughts? JC: I encourage more of the community to come out, to take advantage of this wonderful event. I think people really don’t understand the Foundation and what it does for our community. I want them to learn more about it. RB: My wish would be that attendance to this event was so large that, once the Conference Center is remodeled, we could fill up the entire Sierra Ballroom with people from this community, all taking a little time to think about their loved ones, and about the people who have had an influence on their lives. Hospice Giving Foundation :: hospicegiving.org :: Annual Report 2015 :: Page 13 Outreach and Education In 2001, Hospice Giving Foundation started supporting a community outreach program well known to many—Compassionate Care Alliance. Vicki Nelson, who served as CCA’s Executive Director since its inception, retired in December of 2015. Vicki was the force behind CCA which provided valuable education to people across Monterey County. The Foundation’s initial and subsequent annual grants were essential in making CCA programs and events possible. The need in our community for end-of-life education, awareness, and preparedness is vitally important and the Foundation is committed to ensuring this work continues. The professional team at Hospice Giving Foundation will be conducting a broad range of planning workshops, seminars, and collaborations regarding end-of-life preparedness. In light of changes to the system of care for end of life, including increased use of palliative care and the end-of-life legislation, these conversations and planning workshops are more important than ever. Visit our website to learn about the schedule of workshops on topics such as advance care planning, use of the POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment), understanding grief and family dynamics, and specialty topics to help individuals and families prepare for end-of-life care and decision making. 2015 Grants Awarded for Outreach and Education: $10,000 Legal Services for Seniors Goal for 2016: $125,000 Hospice Giving Foundation Programs in 2015 Being Mortal Coping with Grief at the Holidays Event Date: September 16, 2015; Location: Hartnell College, Salinas; Attendees: 200 Event Date: Nov 21, 2015; Location: Shoreline Community Church; Attendees: 35 Hospice Giving Foundation and Compassionate Care Alliance sponsored a community screening. A child’s lifethreatening illness takes an average family and turns their world upside-down. Finding the right medical treatment is only a part of the battle. Balancing the needs of the ill child and the rest of the family becomes incredibly complex and challenging. Through grants to three local agencies, Hospice Giving Foundation supports an all-encompassing approach to caring for the child and helping the family. Palliative care for a child, which often involves a lengthy course of treatment, includes curative therapies, pain management, in-home nursing, and comfort care. Extensive family support—a cornerstone of children’s palliative care—includes grief and family therapy, as well as practical resources for costly medications, household necessities, and transportation. Funding Care for Terminally Ill Children: Since 2004, Hospice Giving Foundation has contributed nearly $2 million to pediatric palliative care in Monterey and San Benito Counties. Initial funding supported the development of the Pediatric Collaborative, which brought together local providers to establish a responsive, complementary, and unduplicated system of care for their patients and families. Hospice Giving Foundation Grants provide for: ̥̥ In-home nursing care and multi-agency service coordination ̥̥ ̥̥ Grief and family therapy, and ongoing support ̥̥ Specialized medical equipment ̥̥ 2015 Grants Awarded to Support Children’s Palliative Care: $245,000 Coastal Kids Home Care Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Services Partners for Children (formerly Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition) Goal for 2016: $400,000 Transportation to medical appointments, usually at UCSF or Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto Stipends for basic needs, groceries, and rent ̥̥ ̥̥ Expressive arts therapies Clinical training for staff Grief and Family Support Services No matter how much we prepare, loss brings profound grief. Often beginning with a diagnosis and extending well beyond a loved one’s final days, family members face various forms of grief, a process that differs for each person. Patients, too, will probably feel grief as their final days approach and can find solace in spiritual guidance—regardless of religious affiliation— to help them take their journey more peacefully. Hospice Giving Foundation awards grants for grief therapy and ongoing support for families and individuals to help them come to terms with life after a loss. Timelines are fluid and and various methodologies are used: people can access services that fit their needs. Funding for Grief Support: Since its inception, Hospice Giving Foundation has provided over $1.6 million for grief counseling, services for special populations, and a range of family support programs. ̥̥ ̥̥ Individual complex grief support Grief therapy & support groups ̥̥ ̥̥ Anticipatory grief support Expressive arts therapy ̥̥ ̥̥ Care for caregivers & respite care Services that address the needs of unique populations 2015 Grants Awarded for Bereavement and Family Services $54,000 Alzheimer’s Association Catholic Charities Goal for 2016: $125,000 Grants awarded to Hospice of the Central Coast, Hospice of Santa Cruz, Central Coast VNA & Hospice, and the children’s programs include funding for bereavement services.
