FOCUS
Shane Shines
March is National Developmental
Disabilities Awareness Month.
The month also marks Shane’s fourth
anniversary at the Hattie Larlham
Center for Children with Disabilities.
Shane was born with a disability that gave his parents
little hope he’d live a long life. Shane, however, had other
plans. He accomplished things with his disability his family
and caregivers thought would be impossible.
Shane was healthy and had few medical complications
until 2010, when he was hospitalized several times for
gastrointestinal problems. In March 2011, his parents
scheduled him for surgery. The night before his surgery,
Shane had his first seizure. His mother Joan knew Hattie
Larlham’s services and called to see if there was an
opening. Two weeks after his surgery, Shane was admitted
to Hattie Larlham.
Following his surgery, Shane was very ill for six months.
With Hattie Larlham’s care, he slowly gained weight and
began to shine. Soon, Shane was ready to engage in
activities he enjoys. Joan describes her son as a fighter.

March 2015
Dear friends,
In March, Hattie Larlham celebrates National Developmental Disabilities
Awareness Month. Thanks to your generous contributions and our committed
staff, people with developmental disabilities at Hattie Larlham are thriving.
Children with developmental disabilities breathe easier thanks to Hattie
Larlham’s new pediatric ventilator program. In January, the Hattie Larlham
Center for Children with Disabilities admitted its first patient to the ventilator
program. The program gives Hattie Larlham the means to treat people with
developmental disabilities dependent on oxygen in a home-like environment.
Hattie Larlham’s Community Employment program finds jobs for adults with
developmental disabilities in Northeast Ohio companies. Craig is a former
Hattie’s Assembly employee who was hired for a job in the community that fit his
skill set. He is well-liked by his coworkers and enjoys his new job.
In December 2014, Hattie Larlham received the keys to a wheelchair-accessible
2015 Ford Transit van. The van allows people with developmental disabilities
to access to their community. The van was donated by MobilityWorks, the
MobilityWorks Foundation, Put-in-Bay Entertainers and Kepich Ford.
At Hattie Larlham, we are passionate about the people we serve. Your generous
donations give us the opportunity to share great stories of comfort, joy and
achievement. Thank you for your tremendous support as we continue to dream
and achieve in 2015.

Pediatric Ventilator
New program seeks to ease children’s
transition from hospital to home.
In January, the Ohio Department of Developmental
Disabilities (DODD) approved the Hattie Larlham Center
for Children with Disabilities as a pediatric ventilator
care provider. Thanks to the generous support of donors
and hard work of Hattie Larlham’s staff, children with
developmental disabilities requiring mechanical ventilation
are able to receive the medical care and family support they
need.
The pediatric ventilator program cares for children
with developmental disabilities dependent on mechanical
ventilation. It maximizes quality of life and eases the
transition from hospital to home.
Hospitalized patients are referred to Hattie Larlham
based on specific criteria. Hattie Larlham social workers
perform an assessment to determine if the pediatric
ventilator program meets the patient’s needs. Once
approved, the patient receives care 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week from Hattie Larlham’s experienced medical team.
“We are so pleased to offer this program to those who
need it,” said Hattie Larlham Vice President of Center and
Group Home Services Lori Oliver, Ph.D. “The environment is
appropriate for patients who no longer need hospital care,
but are not ready to go home yet.”
Prior to Hattie Larlham’s pediatric ventilator program,
children and their families spent unnecessary time in
hospitals. The pediatric ventilator program allows children
with disabilities to be in a home-like setting amongst peers.
They can attend school, receive physical and speech therapy,
participate in Hattie’s Creative Arts, swim in the indoor pool
and explore the sensory room.
“Pediatric ventilator program patients are not restricted
by their condition,” said Hattie Larlham Respiratory Care
Director Robert Goergen, RRT.
Hattie Larlham respiratory therapists, nurses, physicians,
nurse practitioners and habilitation assistants deliver
medical care. To facilitate continuity of care, Hattie Larlham
partnered with Akron Children’s Hospital and University
Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Both
hospitals provide 24-hour support, routine care and phone
consultation to Hattie Larlham’s medical staff.
When the patient is ready to return home, families and
caregivers receive individualized training from nurses,
therapists and respiratory care providers to facilitate a safe
transition. Multidisciplinary discharge planning with skilled
social workers and a nurse educator provide parents and
caregivers the tools they need to safely care for their child.
Hattie Larlham renovated its facility and trained staff
to prepare for the new ventilator program. One paramount
facility improvement is an upgraded bulk oxygen supply
system, made possible by a generous donation from the
Corinne L. Dodero Foundation for the Arts & Sciences. This
essential component safely guarantees consistent oxygen for
children with chronic respiratory issues.
Hattie Larlham admitted its first ventilator program
patient in January. The program is staffed to care for up to six
children, depending on availability.

Program matches candidate strengths
with company needs to find community
jobs for people with disabilities
Hattie Larlham employs more than 200 people with
developmental disabilities in its work training programs
like Hattie’s Café & Gifts, Hattie’s Gardens and Hattie’s
Doggie Day Care & Boarding. The programs focus on
what people with developmental disabilities can do. They
develop work and personal skills, promote community
engagement and, at the end of every other week, provide
a paycheck. After developing the skills to maintain
employment, the next step is a job at a Northeast Ohio
company other than Hattie Larlham.
4
The Community Employment program finds jobs for
people with disabilities in Northeast Ohio companies. A
person must have a disability to qualify for the program,
but it does not have to be a developmental disability.
Job candidates are also not required to have previous
Hattie Larlham work training program experience. The
employment program matches applicants’ skills and
interests with hiring employers.
“In our program, we take all of the necessary steps to
ensure the employers and employees are satisfied,” said
Hattie Larlham Supported Employment Manager Julie
Collison. “We make sure our applicants are placed in job
settings that build their skill set, and that the employee’s
skills fulfill the employer’s needs.”
Hattie Larlham’s Community Employment staff connect
recruiting companies with the best applicants. The first
HATTIE LARLHAM
step is to assess the company and its job needs.
The staff will then find a candidate that best
matches the qualifications for the position.
Employers have the option of using Hattie
Larlham’s no-cost work assessment to see if
the candidate is a good fit. Once the employee
is hired, Hattie Larlham pairs each worker with
a Hattie Larlham job coach, who assists with
the transition until the employee can work
independently.
“Our staff works with each job seeker to
identify their strengths and opportunities
for growth,” said Hattie Larlham Integrated
Community Employment Manager Jenna Allen.
“Our customized approach to job matching and
placement ensures that program graduates
and employers alike are highly satisfied with the
results.”
“OTHER BUSINESSES HAVE TO
EXPERIENCE THIS, BUT THEY
CAN’T HAVE CRAIG. HE’S OURS
AND WE’RE NOT SHARING.”
Craig was a Hattie Larlham employee for six
years before he was hired by the GPD Group,
an Akron, Ohio architecture firm. Craig started
with GPD in May 2014. He trained with a Hattie
Larlham job coach until he understood the job
well enough to work independently.
“The experience of collaborating with Hattie
Larlham in hiring someone was seamless,”
commented GPD Human Resources Director
Danyelle Sweitzer. “We liked that Hattie Larlham
matched the skill set to the position as well as
the personality.”
“Craig’s enthusiasm is contagious,” said GPD
Administrative Assistant Holly Starr. “He works
well in a team environment and asks clarifying
questions. Other businesses have to experience
this, but they can’t have Craig. He’s ours and
we’re not sharing.”
Hattie Larlham has worked with many
companies, including Chick-Fil-A, Giant Eagle,
GPD Group, Marc’s, Snap Fitness and TJ MAXX.
You can employ people with disabilities, too.

On Dec. 12, 2014, Hattie Larlham received the
keys to a wheelchair-accessible 2015 Ford Transit
van. Thanks to the generous donations from
MobilityWorks, the MobilityWorks Foundation,
Put-in-Bay Entertainers and Kepich Ford, Hattie
Larlham will use the vehicle to transport residents with
developmental disabilities to doctor’s appointments
and community recreational programs.
“People with developmental disabilities need to
have access to the community,” said Hattie Larlham
CEO Dennis Allen. “They like to go to a variety of
places and this vehicle makes that happen.”
“This vehicle is an opportunity for them [Hattie
Larlham residents] to experience things, to get out and
be active,” said MobilityWorks President and CEO and
MobilityWorks Foundation Chairman Bill Koeblitz.
“I just can’t say enough about Hattie Larlham and the
wonderful work they do. MobilityWorks is so proud to
be a part of this project.”
The project started in March 2014 when Put-inBay Entertainers and The MobilityWorks Foundation
hosted a fundraiser for Hattie Larlham. The event
raised more than $15,000, which purchased the van’s
special flooring, seating, wheelchair securement
systems and a wheelchair lift. Pete Kepich and Kepich
Ford, a family-owned dealership in Garrettsville, Ohio,
subsidized the van’s cost with a generous donation.
“It’s amazing the people that you can pull together
to help other people,” said Kepich Ford Owner Pete
Kepich. “To give back is very important, especially in
today’s world, and these folks need our help.”
Working with Kepich Ford and AMF Bruns of
America, MobilityWorks in Akron launched the plan
to customize the van for wheelchair accessibility
for Hattie Larlham. MobilityWorks is the largest
wheelchair-accessible van dealer in the US that
provides mobility solutions.
MobilityWorks installed a SmartFloor system into
the bed of the van. This allows users to reconfigure
the seating arrangement. MobilityWorks also built a
FutureSafe backrest that connects into the van’s floor to
secure wheelchairs.
“Our mission is to help people with physical
challenges,” said MobilityWorks CFO Gerhard Schmidt.
“We realized this van is a very effective way we can
impact many lives. Hattie Larlham is the first recipient
of one of these brand new vehicles.”
Many people and organizations made the new
van possible for Hattie Larlham. To support Hattie

Merger to bring
Hattie Larlham to
central Ohio
Hattie Larlham and ADD to unite
and provide services for children and
adults with developmental disabilities
In April 2015, the Association for the Developmentally
Disabled (ADD) in central Ohio will merge with Northeast
Ohio nonprofit Hattie Larlham. Both organizations serve
people with developmental disabilities.
“Given how closely ADD’s mission, vision and values
align with our own, this merger will be an ideal growth
opportunity for Hattie Larlham,” said Hattie Larlham
CEO Dennis Allen. “Hattie Larlham will establish a strong
presence in central Ohio. This will ensure critical services
for people with developmental disabilities remain available
and viable for the long term.”
Both Hattie Larlham and ADD conducted meticulous
due diligence before negotiating and approving this
merger. Building upon the framework developed by
both organizations during the due diligence process,
ADD will spend 2015 engaged in further planning with
Hattie Larlham to determine how to best leverage both
organization’s resources. Hattie Larlham and ADD boards
of directors approved the merger in late October.
“Hattie Larlham and ADD will leverage our strengths
in a way that positively impacts the lives of those we
serve,” said ADD President and CEO Anthony Hartley. “We
are excited to be joining an organization that has a longstanding reputation for being at the forefront of delivering
quality care for people with developmental disabilities.”
ADD is a nonprofit organization based in the Columbus,
Ohio, area. The organization was created in 1971 to help
people with developmental disabilities live and grow
in their community. ADD serves 1,400 people through
recreation, education and residential programs.
“By integrating ADD into Hattie Larlham’s operations,
Hattie Larlham will broaden the scope and reach of
our services,” said Hattie Larlham Boards of Directors
President Mike Weinhardt. “This merger is a win-win for
everyone, most especially people with developmental
disabilities in Ohio.”

HATTIE LARLHAM
Working
together
Hattie’s Creative Arts pairs
people with developmental
disabilities and artists to
showcase self-expression
and creativity
Angie, a Hattie’s Creative Arts artist,
creates artwork from real-life objects.
Her most recent project is a Koosh
Ball carefully replicated in clay. The
sculpture is comprised of 468 delicate
clay spokes and took one and a half
years to complete.
“In Hattie’s Creative Arts, we work
with the artist so they can create their
own piece,” said Tim Curran, the
Hattie’s Creative Arts tracker who
worked with Angie on the ball. “Some
artwork takes years to complete and
that’s what makes it so valuable.”
Angie (left) worked with Hattie’s Creative Arts tracker Tim Curran
During each session, Tim asked Angie
for 18 months to complete her ceramics piece.
yes and no questions to clarify Angie’s
artistic vision. Many of Hattie’s Creative
Arts’ artists are unable to verbally
express themselves. With the assistance
of art trackers like Tim, artists’ wishes
translate to paper, canvas and clay. Tim
has seen the program positively impact
the artists’ lives.
“Before Angie participated in Hattie’s Creative Arts, she was reserved and
quiet,” said Tim. “Once she started, she opened up and is very engaged. She’s one
of the most enthusiastic people here.”
The personal attention Hattie Larlham staff provides people with
developmental disabilities makes the Hattie’s Creative Arts process a success.
This collaboration echoes throughout programs at the Hattie Larlham Center for
Children with Disabilities.
For more than 50 years, Hattie Larlham’s compassionate and dedicated staff
has listened to and worked with the people we serve. By asking questions and
understanding how people with developmental disabilities feel and communicate,
even nonverbally, Hattie Larlham delivers comfort, joy and achievement.
To donate to Hattie’s Creative Arts or purchase artwork by people with
developmental disabilities, contact Phylliss Steiner at (330) 274-2272, ext. 3013.
