Things Are Getting ‘Wild’ at the SPCA!
The mission of the SPCA Wildlife Department is to bring into captivity sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife to heal or raise them, then return them
to the wild as strong, capable wild animals. Admitted animals range in size from hummingbirds to bald eagles…from chipmunks to coyotes!
Spring and summer are the busiest seasons for the department. In 2010 alone, three full-time paid staff members and more than 60 volunteer
wildlife rehabilitators admitted 2,301 wild animals from more than 100 different species; the majority of these animals came to the SPCA just
between April and September! The Wildlife Hospital, open 8 am – 8 pm seven days each week and available for emergencies 24 hours a day,
allows us the opportunity to provide the absolute best care possible for these thousands of animals.
In addition to caring for and releasing the animals, Wildlife Department staff field several thousand phone calls annually from members of the
public dealing with a wide variety of wildlife concerns. Calls are triaged to determine which wild animals truly need our help, and which animals
need to simply be left alone to carry on their lives.
“It’s our responsibility as a department to keep both the public and our wildlife safe from harm,” says Beverly Jones, assistant wildlife
administrator and hospital manager. “Before taking any action concerning wildlife, we encourage community members to call us first! It’s in the
best interest of both the people and the wild animals.”
Below are some of the most common concerns the SPCA Wildlife Department receives during its busiest months:
QUESTION: I found a cottontail rabbit the size of a hamster in my backyard. I’m worried about
his safety. Is he OK?
Answer: Young rabbits whose ears are straight up and have spiky-looking fur are old enough to
roam on their own. Simply return the rabbit to tall grass. Even though you may be afraid of predators,
the only defense a young cottontail rabbit has at this stage of its life is to hide or freeze, so hiding him
is the best thing you can do for the rabbit.
Infant rabbits, on the other hand, have a smooth, slick fur and their ears lie back on their head. If
possible, any babies looking like this should be returned to their nest. Don’t worry – even if you have
touched the baby, the mother will still accept the baby back and nurse him. You can lay string or lightweight sticks across the nest in a grid-like pattern and check back after the next dark cycle to see if the
mother has returned under the cover of darkness to feed her babies. Not seeing a mother close by, or
at all, is completely normal!
Any cottontails that have obvious wounds as a result of trauma, or have non-weight bearing legs, should
be taken to the SPCA for a veterinary check-up.
Question: I have a family of ducks living on, or traveling through, my property. What should I do?
Answer: Luckily, this is only a temporary situation that will change as the ducklings grow.
Unfortunately, we are not able to relocate waterfowl due to logistics and manpower. Unless the birds
are trapped by a man-made structure or the young are obviously orphaned, there is usually very little
that needs to be done in order to ensure their safety and well-being.
Question: There is a baby bird on the ground. What can I do to help him?
Answer: While most people think that baby birds grow up in the nest and then fly away, nature has a
different idea. In reality, most birds grow in the nest up to a certain age and “fledge,” or leave the nest
and fly to the ground. As fledglings, these young birds are still cared for on the ground by the adults for
a number of days while they develop the necessary skill and strength for flight. Leave the bird where he
is unless he is visibly injured. He’s probably just learning how to become a full-fledged bird!

Director’s Message
In this edition of our Animals at Heart newsletter, you will find our
2010 statistics for the Maddie’s ® Pet Rescue Project in Erie County.
You can also view the community statistics by visiting our Web site,
YourSPCA.org. As you will see from these numbers, we continue
to make huge strides towards our goal of ensuring that no healthy
or treatable animal in Erie County is euthanized by 2014. As a
supporter of our organization, I can’t thank you enough for providing
us with the resources we need to make this dream a reality.
Our path towards this goal actually started more than 15 years ago. We continually
look for new ways to bring adoptable animals to the community, such as our off-site and
mobile adoption programs. Our medical and behavior staff continues to grow so we can
help animals with medical or behavioral problems become adoptable. And we continue
to decrease the number of homeless animals in our community by spaying and neutering
all animals before adoption and offering targeted low-cost sterilization programs to our
community.
Each year, we have watched as the number of animals saved by our organization continues
to grow. Along with this success, we have watched our community step forward with the
support we need to make this happen.
Thanks to our many wonderful donors, we can report that in 2010, 100% of healthy animals
were placed in new homes and 91% of treatable animals received the treatment they
needed to be considered adoptable. We look forward to the next few years when we can
finally say that 100% of healthy AND treatable animals in Erie County have new homes.
Together, I know that we will reach this remarkable goal.

My Favorite Rescue Story
A first-hand account of a wildlife

Over the years, I have been involved in many amazing rescues
and releases of our wild patients. A very special story involved the
rescue of a nest of baby grey squirrels. One spring day, we received a call from people at
an automobile repair shop. They had discovered a nest of baby squirrels in the trunk of the
car they were repairing. The car was due to be in the shop for several days and the baby
squirrels needed help. The squirrels were brought to the SPCA and were found to be in
excellent physical health. We knew the best thing we could do for the baby squirrels would
be to reunite them with their mother.
We contacted the car owner to find out the exact location of where the car had been parked
and we drove the babies back to their home. As we pulled into the driveway, we were
greeted by a very upset mother squirrel who was sitting on a fence in the exact location
where the car had once been. We parked at the end of the driveway, removed the baby
squirrels from the car, and walked towards the mother squirrel. She was watching us very
closely. We stopped a good distance from her and set her nest of babies on the ground.
We then carefully picked up one of the babies and he let out an alarm cry. That was all
the mom needed to hear to know that we had her babies! She bolted off of the fence, ran
right up to her babies, took one in her mouth and ran back down the driveway and up into
a nearby tree. Mother squirrels are very industrious and build a back-up nest in case of an
emergency. So even though the car was no longer available as a home, this mother squirrel
had a new place to raise her babies. It took only a few minutes for the mother squirrel to
retrieve all of her babies.
As we backed out of the driveway, we looked up to the tree and could see the mother
squirrel watching us drive away. It was a very satisfying reward for our efforts to help wildlife.
