2012 Annual Report
Empowering People with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Since 1983
Letter from the Chairman & President
Greetings!
UMAR will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2013. With 24 group homes, 9 apartments,
2 arts centers, day supports & vocational services, UMAR looks remarkably different than
it did in 1983 with just one group home in High Point. For three decades, we have proudly
fulfilled our mission of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
throughout North Carolina. As a nonprofit, we are committed to providing endless
possibilities to the 380 individuals who count on us for support to live out their dreams.
Our work as an agency could not be accomplished without the generosity we receive from
our dedicated supporters, community partners, churches and other organizations. In 2012,
we formed new partnerships with Baucom’s Nursery and Myers Park United Methodist
Church as part of our arts programming. As a result our program participants are enjoying a
rich horticulture & culinary arts program and the pride in creating colorful, textured fabric
artwork. 2012 also marked the opening of the McCleskey Apartments, UMAR’s first 9-unit
independent living facility in Huntersville.
As we look ahead, 2013 will certainly be a year of momentous celebration for UMAR. It also
poses many changes in the way we will operate to continue to be successful for years to come.
Roughly 85 percent of our annual $7.7 million budget depends on state and federal funding
sources. As an agency, we are focusing on alternative ways to generate and diversify our
revenue streams as we brace for significant cuts from governmental funding sources.
In response to funding changes, UMAR will continue the spirit of its pioneering history by
providing a broad range of opportunities that inspire, empower and celebrate the many talents
and gifts of people with disabilities. This includes the expansion of our community-based
services that provide rehabilitative programs and receive funding from CAP/Innovations,
government and private funds.
Additionally, we will increase our fund-raising efforts to help offset the funding cuts. About
11 percent of UMAR’s annual budget comes from the charitable contributions we receive
from supporters who passionately believe in our cause. As we celebrate our 30-year legacy
and position our agency for future success, we thank you for your continued support in
empowering people with disabilities.

Living
Chris DiBernard says he loves living with his housemates at
UMAR’s Barnabas Home in Cornelius. He also loves his job at
a local McDonald’s where he is employed. Chris keeps the
restaurant spotless for customers by cleaning the dining
room tables, condiment stations and restrooms. Chris says
he is thankful for the support he receives from UMAR’s
Residential and Supported Employment programs. He
feels more confident in his abilities and can live more
independently in his community through these programs
because he now has more self-esteem. When he’s not
working, Chris spends much of his free time at bowling
lanes with his buddies from the Barnabas home. A selfproclaimed bowling fanatic, Chris recently earned a
Gold medal in the Special Olympics for Bowling.

Helen Fleming has been part of UMAR since
1989. She lives with five housemates at the
Myers Park home in Charlotte and enjoys
hanging out with her UMAR family. Three
days a week, Helen works at UMAR’s central
office in Huntersville where she assists with
mailings, answering the phone and other tasks. Helen
likes working with her colleagues and has earned a
reputation as a friendly and diligent worker. “I love
working best of all because I enjoy earning my own
money for fun things, recreation, and for bills and
stuff too.” Helen uses the money she makes at her
job to pay for social activities, books, and to support
her love of latch hooking.

Working
Two years ago, Thomas “Leon” Robinson of
Stoneville joined UMAR at the ROC. While there
he has earned his high school diploma and
developed life skills in an Adult Developmental
Vocational Program. Now that he has his
diploma, Leon is focusing on a career. He hopes
to soon join UMAR’s mobile work crew which
provides lawn and ground maintenance and
janitorial services to area businesses, homes and
churches. Leon is proud of his accomplishments
and credits UMAR at the ROC for helping
him achieve many of them.

Beth Kennedy, who lives at
UMAR’s Angel Home, is
adored and praised by the staff at the
Charlotte Café in Charlotte. She is a hard worker, a joy to be
around and so well known that many customers call her by name. Beth helps
the restaurant by rolling silverware in napkins, assisting with beverages
and providing support to the café’s servers. Like everyone else, Beth enjoys the friendships
and connections to others that her work provides -- not to mention the paycheck!

Creating
UMAR artist Sean Reilly loves to create original works of art
because it is his passion. Sean has been involved in the Arts
Program for several years and enjoys every minute he spends
there. He recently completed a project honoring Father
O’Rourke of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church,
using the church’s Jerusalem Cross as inspiration.
Sean says his UMAR activities have helped him
build his sense of self worth and respect among
others. Plus, he likes learning new things.

Martha Froneberger has gained a notable reputation as a
prolific artist at UMAR’s art center in Lincolnton. During the week, she
creates unique artwork that she sells at the center’s art gallery, local venues and community
events. Known for her signature jewelry pieces, Martha has also applied her artistic talents
to acrylic painting, photography, fabric and culinary arts. At the Lincolnton Arts Center,
Martha has the chance to explore and accomplish her personal goals while being an engaged
and active member in the community where she lives and works. “She is always ready to try a
new technique and bring an elevated sense to her work,” said UMAR Arts Director Bob Terri.
“Martha is one of the most naturally artistic and creative people in our centers because of her
innate curiosity and willingness to develop her personal expression.”
Volunteering From The Hear t
Roy Mendenhall has been a
volunteer most of his life so when
someone asked if he could help
UMAR, Roy jumped on board. He
started by helping to build storage
units for the UMAR homes in
Winston-Salem. Through this project,
Roy garnered more volunteers from
the community for UMAR. After
completing the storage units he helped
install new floors at the Clingman home
in Winston-Salem. He continues to help out, fixing up things and adding storage units when
needed. Roy is a great advocate for UMAR, and UMAR is so glad he is here to help!
Byron
and
Edna
Shelton
became
active volunteers and
supporters of UMAR about eight years ago.
Their involvement stems from concern for
the future of their grandson who has Down
syndrome. They became even more involved
when it was suggested that they join the
church disability taskforce. The Sheltons
began speaking on behalf of UMAR,
assisting at the annual Methodist conference
and volunteering at UMAR luncheons. The
Sheltons want other churches to become
more involved with UMAR, so they have
even collected donations at church luncheons
and suppers to support the agency. “I think
I have inspired others just by handing out
pamphlets and getting UMAR’s name out
there,” Edna Shelton said. Their own church
community has become much more involved
with UMAR and it is due to people like the
Sheltons speaking up for UMAR!
Rev. Drew Southern of Faith
United Methodist Church in Rural Hall has
been serving UMAR for the past six years.
He became involved through a minister’s
meeting when his former church had been
looking for various opportunities for youth.
It started as a semi-annual event, going to
the Winston-Salem homes to do yard work,
play board games and cook meals. Drew said
that the more they got to know the residents
at the UMAR homes, the more they wanted
to outreach and engage these extraordinary
folks. Recently, his church hosted a Sock Hop
event open for all people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities in Winston-Salem.
Drew says that his participation with UMAR
has definitely inspired his church community.
“The more we got to know them,” he said,
“the more often we began hanging out at
their homes. It grew organically.”
