In addition to these gifts, many generous donors have made commitments to the campaign for a new hospital – Building Our Future, Committed To Care. 1 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital, I want to thank you for taking the time to know our story, because it truly is part of the island’s story. Our hospital has learned that practicing medicine on Nantucket presents unique challenges in a dynamic environment, but that means our mission is also deeply fulfilling and gratifying. During my career in medicine, including more than a decade as an emergency department physician at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and now five years as its President and CEO, I’ve come to understand how much this hospital means to the island and the depth of our relationship with the community. We exist solely for Nantucket and its people, giving everyone who calls the island home the confidence to live, work and play in this special place. For me, it continues to be an honor and a privilege to lead a talented group of medical professionals and staff as we take on the responsibility of caring for our friends, family, neighbors and visitors – the entire community. They may not know they need us – until they do. That’s when our team gets to show its colors and demonstrate its remarkable capabilities and resources. And they shine. As the sole medical provider on Nantucket, the hospital represents the island’s safety net on so many different levels: • We are committed to creating greater access to primary care, which is at the core of our mission and the foundation for community wellness, so we continue to recruit new physicians and providers. • Our 24/7 departments – Emergency, Labor and Delivery, and the medical/surgical floor – are the backbone of what we do as a hospital and accessible around the clock. • Sustaining a range of outpatient services, including chemotherapy and dialysis, allows more Nantucketers to stay close to home for the care they need. • And we now have over 30 visiting physicians practicing 24 sub-specialties in our clinics, including a new partnership with the Mass General Cancer Center that gives patients the option of staying on Nantucket for much of their cancer care. What I believe we’ve created is a hospital that gives our patients the best of both worlds: the comfort and familiarity of a small, community hospital that is also able to leverage the world-class medical resources of our affiliate Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the finest hospitals in the country. I often tell people that we’re a lot more hospital than you might expect, and an improbable amount of hospital for an island 30 miles at sea. That has never been truer than it is today. Sincerely, Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD President and CEO 2 A STORY OF SUCCESS In the fall of 2010, when the hospital faced a perfect storm of declining volume, lower reimbursements and a failing building, we launched a strategic plan entitled “Rebuilding the Hospital from the Inside Out.” Our goals were to better serve the needs of the Nantucket community, and construct a sustainable business model for a small rural hospital 30 miles at sea. In the five years since then, much has been accomplished and we’re proud to say our island’s hospital is on solid ground and looking toward a bright future. The growth we’ve experienced over the past five years has been remarkable, and is truly an island success story. We should all take pride in what has occurred at NCH because without the financial and sweat equity of the entire Nantucket community we would not be where we are today. On behalf of the entire NCH family, we want to express our gratitude for your support and for trusting us with your medical needs. Thank you. Here are the facts: • Increased to 10 full-time physicians • Increased primary care • Increased visiting specialty physicians • Expanded pediatric clinics • Initiation of a hospitalist program • Increased telemedicine interface with MGH • Created MGH-supported programs such as oncology/hematology service • Opened new sports medicine and physical therapy facility • Upgraded technology • Began conversion to electronic medical records • Created a Behavioral Health Task Force • Provided valuable community resources • Increased communications to the community • Increased philanthropy • Greatly improved the financial bottom line More Patients. More Services. More Hospital. Read more about these successes on our new website, nantuckethospital.org. These achievements are only possible because of the generous support and commitment of people like you. We are truly grateful for your support and welcome your thoughts and suggestions at any time. 3 PHILANTHROPY AT NCH When we started planning the new Nantucket Cottage Hospital website, the theme for the site was “Wellness Found Here.” Based on the phenomenal fundraising results of last year, “Philanthropy Found Here” would have been just as appropriate. Last year was a record-setting year for fundraising at NCH in every respect, as you can see from the brief snapshots below. Nearly 2,200 donors supported the hospital. On behalf of everyone here, and all of our patients, thank you for your generous gifts. With sincere gratitude, Courtney O’Neill Executive Director, NCH Foundation Fiscal Year 2014 Fundraising Results NCH Fund and Special Events Over $3.4 million was given to Nantucket Cottage Hospital through The NCH Fund and special events in FY2014. Unrestricted gifts such as these can be used to fund enhancements to care, new equipment, facility renovation, and other critical needs. These funds help address emergencies and provide needed flexibility to the hospital’s finances. The increasing generosity of our annual donors makes an incredible difference in the quality of healthcare on Nantucket. Total gifts to The NCH Fund and net proceeds from the Boston Pops on Nantucket and The Swing for NCH have grown over 50% in the past 3 years. FY12 FY13 FY14 $608,013 $1,211,644 $1,239,757 Pops Net $1,453,294 $1,307,389 $2,162,080 Golf Net $48,823 $35,144 $42,212 Net Total $2,110,130 $2,554,177 $3,444,049 NCH Fund 4 4 Restricted Annual Gifts Each year, two remarkable organizations generate essential resources for hospital services. The Thrift Shop, now in its 86th year, is led by volunteers who have raised over $3.7 million for the hospital during its history. Each year, the Thrift Shop Board meets with the President of the Hospital to discuss potential funding opportunities and designates their gifts for specific programs or initiatives. Swim Across America Nantucket supports those afflicted with cancer and patients needing palliative care. The funding from this event has enabled NCH’s cancer care service to expand and provide treatment for more patients on-island each year and has allowed Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket to develop and grow its support programs and services. FY13 FY14 $175,000 $200,000 $250,000 Swim Across America Nantucket (to NCH) $5,000 $70,000 $110,000 Swim Across America Nantucket (to PASCON) $5,000 $70,000 $70,000 Other $107,766 $104,555 $221,778 Total $292,766 $444,555 $651,778 Hospital Thrift Shop Extraordinary Legacies In an unexpected act of generosity, Mrs. Katherine Lodge, a long-time island resident, named NCH as one of three island nonprofits to benefit from the sale of her home and estate. Her bequest will be received by the hospital in FY2015 to support hospital renovations, care for those who cannot afford it and new hospital facilities. In FY2014, $97,000 was received through other estates and bequests. If you are considering including NCH in your estate – thank you. We would very much like to recognize our donors during their lifetime through The 1911 Society. Please let us know if you have already included NCH in your gift planning or if you plan to do so. Building our Future, Committed to Care Our campaign for a new hospital saw a remarkable surge in commitments during the spring and summer of 2014 thanks to the leadership of Trustees Maureen Hackett and Bruce Percelay. We are immensely grateful for this early support from our Board of Trustees, our community, and some extraordinary friends of the hospital. As of the end of the fiscal year in September, we had received commitments of over $53 million. Now that the location of the new building is confirmed we hope to continue this momentum in 2015. We look forward to recognizing all of the donors to this important initiative in a future campaign report, and thank everyone for the many ways they have supported the hospital. THANK YOU TO ALL THE DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS WHO SUPPORT OUR ISLAND HOSPITAL! 5 PHILANTHROPY AT NCH FY12 27,424 PHYSICAL THERAPY TREATMENTS 10,633 77,822 LAB TESTS EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS SNAPSHOT OF SERVICES 6,708 X-RAY EXAMS Inside the walls of Nantucket Cottage Hospital, our team of experienced doctors and clinicians provide an extensive number of 2,085 CT SCANS medical services that continue to grow. The Washington, DC couple has been coming to Nantucket for 30 years and already had a long history of contributing generously to the island’s only hospital. But in 2014, the opportunity arose to do even more for NCH. The Monahans were asked to chair the Boston Pops on Nantucket, the signature event of the summer and the largest single fundraiser for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. It was a job perfectly suited to their unique skills and talents, and the Monahans brought new life to the 18th edition of the Boston Pops on Nantucket concert. “We’ve always supported Nantucket Cottage Hospital and this was an opportunity to be part of such a great island tradition that means so much to the hospital,” Laurie Monahan said. “We took on the job because we believe so deeply in the future of this institution, and the Pops is an event that always brings everyone in the community together.” With vast experience in the non-profit sector and event-planning, the Monahans put a patriotic spin on the event, honoring several Congressional Medal of Honor recipients before the Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart dazzled the crowd with a special multimedia piece to honor the 200th anniversary of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Monahans also added two LED jumbotrons to either side of the stage and doubled the fireworks display, making the 2014 Boston Pops on Nantucket show unlike any that came before it. “Being able to help Nantucket Cottage Hospital in staging this one-of-a-kind event was truly an unforgettable experience,” said Bob Monahan. “We’ve always been dedicated to the hospital, so it was an honor for Laurie and me to be asked to take on the role of event chairs and help bring the island together with the Boston Pops.” 11 David L. Prather Palmer John Archibald “The Nantucket Cottage Hospital has taken care of me, my family and many of my employees.” DONOR SPOTLIGHTS -Michael Molinar 15 MICHAEL MOLINAR – FLOWERS ON CHESTNUT Some of our donors give us their time as volunteers. Others contribute their knowledge and expertise as Trustees. And some generously offer their financial support to the hospital they love. But there’s only a few who can say they’ve done all those things. Michael Molinar is one of them. Molinar, the owner of the popular Flowers on Chestnut, has given his time, talent, treasure, and more to Nantucket Cottage Hospital over the years, and we are lucky to count him among our friends. The list of Molinar’s contributions to NCH is extensive. He’s served as a Trustee, a Foundation Trustee and an Advisory Council member. He’s been involved with Boston Pops on Nantucket concert since its inception, advising on style, decor, supplies and flowers, hosting volunteer workshops, and serving as the event chair in 2004, 2005 and 2006. As a current member of the NCH Design Team, Molinar provides guidance and recommendations on a wide range of hospital projects and initiatives, from the art hanging in the halls of NCH, to the recent relocation of primary care offices. This extraordinary track record earned Molinar the Myrt Eldridge Volunteer of the Year award at the 2014 NCH Annual Meeting, an honor given in memory of Myrtle B. Eldridge to the hospital volunteer who best exemplifies Myrt’s spirit of selfless dedication to the betterment of the hospital and commitment to our patients. He is also a previous recipient of the Alexander “Sandy” M. Craig, Jr. Leadership Award and the Philip C. Murray Business Leadership Award from NCH. “The Nantucket Cottage Hospital has taken care of me, my family and many of my employees.” Molinar said. “That hospital saved my mother’s life. Those are just a few of the reasons why it’s been important to me to give back to the hospital over the years. Just as NCH cares for our community and our loved ones, we need to act as stewards of this critically important institution for future generations.” In addition to his years of work on behalf of NCH, Molinar has also been part of the community campaign for the new hospital, lending his image and words to the cause. “The mechanics of this aging building need to be updated to continue to provide us with the best quality care thirty miles at sea,” Molinar said. “The hospital has come a long way in the thirty years I’ve been on Nantucket, and now it needs to take the next step.” 17 OUR DONORS Susan & Gene Briskman Mrs. Beverly Crosland William & Katherine Falcone Jesse & Chrissy Brown Gerald Crown Lorine C. Harding, Jr. OUR DONORS Gary & Kathryn Tremblay 21 DONOR SPOTLIGHTS “Giving NCH a visible gift has a ripple effect: its benefits renew with each use.” -Dr. Koehm 21 DR. MARGARET KOEHM Few people spend more time at Nantucket Cottage Hospital than Dr. Margaret “Mimi” Koehm. In addition to her busy family medicine practice, Dr. Koehm specializes in operative obstetrics. As Chief of the Maternal and Child Health Department, she plays a leading role in The Birthplace at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, last year delivering 109 of the 124 babies born on the island. Bringing new Nantucketers into the world, seeing patients and serving as President of the Medical Staff and as a Member of the Board of Trustees requires an appreciable commitment of self to the hospital and the community. But Dr. Koehm has also found time to focus on less apparent needs, giving back to NCH to improve care for patients and keep staff au courant. Since first arriving on Nantucket, Dr. Koehm, a former physics teacher, has paid attention to equipment needs, listening attentively as staff and providers have revealed wish-lists. “Our NCH staff and providers are in the ideal situation to see first–hand where needs exist,” Dr. Koehm shared. “Sometimes a new or updated device not only improves care and skill levels but energizes those of us who use it. We find ourselves more solution-oriented and that’s a plus for patient care.” Among Dr. Koehm’s first donations to NCH was a new pediatric ventilator, now used in The Birthplace. “Giving NCH a visible gift has a ripple effect: its benefits renew with each use,” she said. Currently, Dr. Koehm has set her sights on raising money to replace the hospital’s transport incubator for those babies who need to be transferred off-island for additional care. Asked what’s been the catalyst for her contributions, she revealed, “my parents told us kids that volunteering was recreation. As we did it we discovered that the word’s first ‘e’ is a long one, that we wanted to give something visible or the money to buy it as well as our service. Teaching in secondary school and later in the Brown Family Practice residency program reinforced this idea of noblesse oblige. At NCH I still find time to supervise training for nurse practitioner aspirants and occasional medical residents. And someday, they’ll gift their help too. As a ‘re-creator’ one is never alone. Both at the hospital and on the island, Good Samaritans are part of the landscape.” Dr. Koehm added that her hope during this especially welcome spring of 2015 is for an increased number of those Good Samaritans to appear at NCH to be “donors of time or tangibles” so that the hospital’s wish-lists will be fulfilled by a record number of new names. 23 Ms. Jennifer Hatten Mr. & Mrs. Peter S. Since 1929, the Hospital Thrift Shop has contributed more than $3.7 million to the hospital, an incredible legacy of generosity. Funding from the Thrift Shop has allowed the hospital to complete important projects, such as the relocation of the hospital’s Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy Associates to a new, state-of-the-art facility on Bayberry Court. The relocation was made possible by the Thrift Shop, which donated nearly $300,000 toward this effort. In 2014 alone, the Thrift Shop donated $250,000 to the hospital, the largest gift in the shop’s 86-year history on the island. Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Williams The Boston Pops on Nantucket concert could not truly be a community-wide event unless every person on the island has the opportunity to attend. That’s where veteran Pops volunteer Linda Williams comes in. Williams, who has been a key member of the hospital’s Pops team for all 19 years, is a volunteer captain who coordinates the logistics of providing access to the concert for islanders and visitors with special needs. With a team of up to 15 people, Williams makes it easy for the disabled, the elderly, and others with special needs to get to and from Jetties Beach for the concert. She coordinates vans, wheelchair-accessible taxis and works with the NRTA to provide transportation to the beach from multiple staging areas for those who might otherwise be unable to attend the concert. Williams even arranges for many island residents to be picked up from their homes and taken to Jetties Beach. Linda Williams Every year more than 300 people utilize the special services provided by Williams and her team at the Pops concert, and for many, it’s the highlight of their summer, she says. VOLUNTEERISM “They plan their whole summer around it,” Williams said. “For some people, it’s the only event they go to. Between the drivers and people there at the beach setting up the chairs, it’s a big group effort.” Williams has a long history of public service on Nantucket, and was a member of the Nantucket Commission on Disability for nearly 28 years. Some of her family members are sight- and hearing-impaired, so assisting those with special needs is something close to her heart. Nineteen years ago, when she heard the hospital was planning to host the Boston Pops at Jetties Beach for a benefit concert, Williams felt compelled to get involved and ensure that those with special needs would be able to attend. Williams rarely gets a chance to sit back and enjoy the Pops’ performance as her time is quite occupied during the concert, however, she does have a favorite part of the show. “When I’m there I don’t get to stop and watch the concert because we’re making sure everyone’s warm, getting water and snacks and making sure everyone is okay,” she said. “But I do stop and watch the fireworks. That’s my favorite part with the 1812 Overture.” With the Boston Pops on Nantucket concert in its 19th year, Williams’ commitment to the annual event remains tireless. “As long as they keep having the concert, I’ll keep doing this until I’m in the wheelchair and they’re wheeling me in to watch the Pops!” Williams said with a laugh. 34 Volunteer Spotlight: Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital In the summer of 2014, a dozen volunteers came together to launch a new effort to build the next generation of leaders and advocates for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Putting their collective skills and networks to work, their inaugural “Après Beach” event in 2014 attracted 225 people to meet, mingle, and learn about NCH. Led by co-chairs Tyler Hardy and Tad Lee, the Friends of NCH (affectionately known as FONCH) hopes to create broad-based awareness and visibility for the hospital and encourage support of the new building project. “Nantucket is blessed with unmatched natural beauty, vibrant cultural resources, talented people and a rich history,” said Friends co-chair Tad Lee. “Nantucket should have a world-class medical facility that matches the qualities of this special place.” Lee, a longtime summer resident of Nantucket, is the Vice President of New England Development, which owns and operates numerous properties on the island, and a co-founder and partner in Cru Oyster Bar Nantucket. “We look forward to working with the entire community to help create a new Nantucket Cottage Hospital with increased capacity and state-of-the-art facilities,” Lee added. “This is an important investment in Nantucket’s future – one that will increase access to health care services and create new jobs and economic opportunities on the island.” Terry Sanford, who was born at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and now runs the Boston-based real estate firm Territory, is also among the founding members of the Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “As a Nantucket native I know first-hand how important the Cottage Hospital is to this community,” Sanford said. “I chose to get involved with the Friends after I became aware of the critical need to improve the hospital’s facility. My hope is that as a group we can raise awareness for what’s going on with perhaps the island’s paramount institution.” The founding members of The Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital group include: • • • • • • • • • • • • Ramin Arani Paul G. Dutra Andrea Finard Tyler Hardy Douglass Karp Tad Lee Michael S. Lorber Emily Ott Terry Sanford James M. Scheurell Jane N. Stoddard Brian Sullivan 35 VOLUNTEERISM Acting as ambassadors, The Friends of NCH will seek to engage young island residents, seasonal residents, and visitors alike by spreading awareness about the vital role NCH plays in supporting the Nantucket community. THE 1911 SOCIETY In 1911, a group of far-thinking Nantucket residents began shaping the island’s medical future. Recognizing the precarious position of being 30 miles at sea, they founded Nantucket Cottage Hospital, sharing a visionary outlook. More than 100 years later, people who love Nantucket continue to give their time, talent and gifts to ensure the vitality of the island’s hospital. As a lasting legacy to their appreciation of the medical expertise and compassionate care available to them on the island, donors are choosing to make a bequest to their beloved Nantucket Cottage Hospital. In recognition of their gracious and visionary support, the hospital has created a distinguished donor group — The 1911 Society. Learn more about The 1911 Society at nantuckethospital.org or call 508-825-8250. The Legacy of Katherine Lodge Nantucket Historical Association Katherine Lodge was the longtime owner and steward of the Hadwen-Wright House at 94 Main Street, one of the iconic mansions known as the “Two Greeks” that are a symbol of Nantucket’s past whaling glory. A strong advocate for the preservation of historic buildings and architecture, Mrs. Lodge loved Nantucket, and was a passionate caretaker of the piece of island history she called home. Sadly, Mrs. Lodge passed away on May 20, 2014, but she left behind a surprise that will benefit Nantucketers for many years to come. In her last will and testament, Mrs. Lodge gave the residue of her estate to three island institutions: Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Her Greek Revival-style mansion, protected by a preservation restriction, was sold by Mrs. Lodge’s estate in October 2014 and the proceeds of the sale provided the major portion of her residue which was divided evenly among the three grateful beneficiaries. 1911 SOCIETY Mrs. Lodge came to know the skilled and compassionate care provided at Nantucket Cottage Hospital as a patient in her final years. “She was a very straight-forward person, who lived very simply, completely without pretense,” said Dr. Diane Pearl. “She had a wonderful sense of humor and a kind and generous spirit. We all miss her, and we are very grateful for her generous gift to the hospital.” Mrs. Lodge’s bequest to the hospital was made in memory of her husband, John Allyn Lodge, and is intended for two distinct purposes: “To create a fund to pay for the care of those who cannot pay their bills and to be used by the Board of Trustees for whatever expansion of the facility is needed.” The gift to the hospital will thus assist the most vulnerable members of the island community, and also help to ensure the future of quality health care for all on Nantucket. Already in 2015, a portion of the bequest has been utilized to create a new primary care office space for Dr. Pearl. “This is an extraordinary legacy to leave behind and one that touches some of the most important facets of island life – health, conservation, and faith,” said Dr. Margot Hartmann, president and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “I remember visiting Katherine when she was at the hospital. There was a sweetness about her, and as we chatted she encouraged me to visit her at her home. She told me to ‘come right in the kitchen door’.” 36 OUR TEAM SENIOR LEADERSHIP 2015 Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD President & Chief Executive Officer David Burke Vice President & Chief Financial Officer James R.
