Shopping for new school clothes is an annual event for some families. Others don’t have that ‘luxury.’ And, there are some items that are not available in thrift shops or second-hand stores. Imagine going to school with duct tape holding your underwear together. It happens.
Two Rivers received notice of potential funds from the Illinois Department of Human Services that would help meet basic needs of income-eligible
students returning to school. One requirement? Two Rivers had to secure $5,000 in private funds to obtain the IDHS matching grant.
The Community Foundation presented this need and opportunity to one of our donors who has a charitable fund with us. The Back to School Essentials Program met the donor’s interest and fund parameters for a grant from the Community Foundation. That $5,000 grant leveraged an additional
$20,000 for The Back to School Essentials program.
As a result, more than 1,350 income-eligible students in Adams, Brown, Pike and Schuyler counties got to shop for new underwear, shoes, and socks.
The program had a dramatic impact. A grandmother, raising three grandchildren on a fixed income, didn’t know what they were going to do for
basic items. She received vouchers to purchase essentials that her grandchildren needed—underwear, shoes, and socks—which the family could not
afford. In tears, she thanked Two Rivers’ employees for the new items.

Delivering care with respect and dignity
The all-volunteer Hannibal Free Clinic provides services, at no cost, to qualified adults aged 18-65 who are living below 150% of poverty level and
living without health insurance. These services are vital because many Northeast Missouri residents do not have access to basic medical or dental care.
The Community Foundation assisted the clinic by awarding a grant from its unrestricted endowment funds to provide a helping hand. That enabled
more than 500 Northeast Missouri families to access basic medical, wellness and dental care.
The Free Clinic prides itself in respecting the dignity of each patient, working collaboratively with volunteers, fostering community partnerships,
and responding daily to the current health needs in our area.

A group of citizens believed that by working together
we can enrich the quality of life in the tri-states.
Their vision, followed by action, created the Community Foundation on November 26, 1997. By December
31—which marked the end of our first fiscal year—we
held $1,050. Additional financial support was committed.
That enabled our newly formed Community Foundation
to embark upon our work to offer people from all walks
of life the opportunity to build funds to help address needs
and opportunities today, tomorrow—forever.

Bringing donors and needs together
There are many ways in which the Community Foundation strives to serve as “The Perfect Match.”
With donors, it often begins when we ask, “What do you want to do with your charitable dollars?”
Helping donors define and fulfill their charitable goals offers a tremendous opportunity to impact a
charity, a cause or a community.
Her generosity will continue to affect her community
Lela ‘Lee’ Lindsay loved her family, her church and her community. It was evident in her conversations and actions. She sealed that
commitment with a bequest of $1,000,000 made through the Community Foundation and announced at the end of 2010.
“Thanks to her planning and professional assistance from her attorney, Steve Siebers, mother’s charitable giving could be done soon
after her death,” said her daughter Lee Lindsay Curtis.
The gift became part of the Arthur O. and Lela B. Lindsay Fund, which Lee established with the Community Foundation during her
lifetime to help fulfill her charitable desires.
“Mother wanted to establish a fund with the Community Foundation because she felt more organizations could be helped for a longer
period of time through this permanent fund,” said her daughter.
She wanted to build an endowment to make sure funds were always available to support the community, her daughter added. “Mother appreciated that the Community Foundation would handle granting, record keeping, IRS reports, and investment management so
that she did not need to start her own foundation. She also trusted the local leadership provided by the Board.”
“I was very close to Lee for over 40 years, and she was the most generous and caring person that I know,” said her son-in-law Dennis R. Williams. “She was a great booster for Quincy, supporting a variety of causes both large and small. The Community Foundation
of the Quincy Area is really the best way for Lee to continue her tradition of philanthropy.”
“Growing up during the depression gave Mother a greater appreciation of the financial resources to come later in her life. She acted
on her belief that to whom much is given, much is expected. Mother had learned, as her Pastor Bob Morwell had pointed out, ‘It is
truly better to give than to receive,’” said her daughter.
“Lela Lindsay was the ultimate class act,” said Steven Siebers, her attorney. “From her personal appearance and dress, to her values, to her generous support of her church and community organizations, she set a high bar.
“During her life, she never really felt comfortable receiving recognition for helping others. Her gifts were made from her heart to
make her community a better place.
“Her engaging smile and twinkle in her eye were her outward signs of always living life to its absolute fullest.
“Her gift to the Community Foundation serves as a lasting tribute to her life.”

‘Making Good Schools Better’
Improving education for local students is a priority for Brown County citizens.
The ‘Making Good Schools Better’ initiative has provided financial assistance to teachers and administrators pursuing that goal.
With educational improvements noted, community members explored ways to ensure financial sustainability for the program.
In 2010, the Hornet Pride Foundation provided seed money to create the Brown County Public Schools Education Fund with the
Community Foundation.
“The Hornet Pride Foundation began as a way to help the Brown County school system,” said Steve Kremer, president. “With the
new Brown County Public Schools Education Fund, and its administration through the Community Foundation, the community is in a
great position to accept large donations and to continue and market the fund.”
Brown County residents remain active with the fund. Grant requests are submitted through the Superintendent’s office. A committee with representatives from various Brown County organizations and the community at-large recommends use of the funds.

Some people see a need, shake their heads then walk away convinced the challenge is too great. Others decide to do something.
What began as a collaborative effort to support a soup kitchen in 2008 became Horizons Social Services. The organization seeks to
feed the hungry, improve community health and wellness, and contribute towards breaking the cycle of poverty in our community. It
does this primarily through three programs: the Horizons Soup Kitchen, the Horizons Transitional work program and the Horizons
Clothes Closet.
The mission and work impressed one person enough to prompt the donor to begin a fund to help ensure the organization’s future.
Because a fund can be started as an “Acorn” with a minimum of $1,000, the donor made the initial gift and continues to build the fund.
That seedling is growing and the donor hopes that others who believe in Horizons’ mission will also make gifts to help bring the fund
to the required $15,000 thus providing a permanent source of support for those in need.

Those concerts have become increasingly important since
many children have little or no access to the arts due to cuts in
schools’ curriculum or lack of programs in their communities.
The concerts provide a musical experience plus encouragement
to participate thanks to the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association. It presents three free concerts to school children.
“I enjoyed seeing the instruments for the first time and seeing
the dancing,” said a fourth grade student from Southeastern Elementary. “You really inspired me to learn to play an instrument.
I want to play the harp so much. It sounds so beautiful.”
Grants made in 2010 from the Katherine Broemmel Endowment for the Arts, Paul H. & Anne B. Gardner Memorial Fund
and the Samantha Otte Youth Opportunity Fund helped with funding that allowed more than 3,500 children to attend the concerts
this past spring.
The Pike County (IL) Chapter of the American
Red Cross, a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, provides relief to victims of disaster and
helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to
emergencies. Grant funds were used to purchase
instructor books and materials for CPR classes.
The mentoring program provided by Big Brothers
Big Sisters of West Central Illinois helps children
reach their full potential through professionally-supported, one-to-one relationships. This grant helped
serve the needs of children in Adams County, thus
contributing to better schools, brighter futures, and
stronger communities for all.
For 40 years, area children have been introduced to live symphonic music through Young Peoples’ Concerts.
Adams County Academic Success Initiative
strives to train every Adams County public and private school and child care center staff member in
Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People. Funding was used to support this program
in Adams County schools.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Great River Area
is a one-to-one mentoring program that serves atrisk children. Grant funding assisted with the costs
of direct services related to matching at-risk youth
with an adult mentor, supervising the match relationship and hosting activities in Lee County, Iowa;
Hancock County, Illinois; and Clark County, Missouri.

As an intermediary agency, the Center for Effective Nonprofits (CEN) assists, promotes, represents
and strengthens community organizations as they
improve the quality of life for those they serve. This
grant was used for the annual membership fee of
and new materials for the West Central Illinois Philanthropy Center at John Wood Community College.
Cornerstone: Foundations for Families helps people meet life’s challenges by providing the skills,
support and hope needed for effective, fulfilling
lives. Grant funding supported Cornerstone’s Comprehensive Youth Services program which provides
counseling and casework services to youth who have
social, emotional and/or behavioral problems.
The Douglass Community Services Kids In Motion
program teaches teens and pre-teens to value work,
their community, and their future. The organization
focuses the majority of their efforts on at-risk youth,
being referred by schools, juvenile offices, social service organizations and others. This grant provided
general support for the Kids in Motion program.
The Durham Community Center and Ball Park
provides a community center, playground, walking
path and ball fields to residents and visitors to the
small community of Durham, Missouri. Funding
allowed the community to update playground equipment to replace existing old and dangerous equipment.
The mission of the Hannibal Concert Association
is to bring live professional music and dance perfor-
mance to the Hannibal region. This grant provided
funding for artists fees for the 2010-2011 concert
season and increased the quality of music and dance
offered while keeping the price of admission to a
minimum.
The Hannibal Free Clinic promotes health and
wellness by providing quality services, at no cost, to
adults ages 18-65 who do not have access to basic
medical care. This grant provided general support to
help the Hannibal Free Clinic respond to the current
health and dental needs of the area.
Madonna House provides immediate shelter, food
and clothing to homeless women and their children,
creating a safe, stable environment where the family can acquire and improve skills to break the cycle
of instability. This Community Foundation grant provided funds to purchase nutritional foods that provide nutritious meals for those in the community and
surrounding area.
Quincy Notre Dame High School Foundation supports the mission of Quincy Notre Dame High School
to educate lifelong learners for lives of service.
Grant funding assisted with the purchase of Macintosh computers to introduce a graphic design course
to the high school curriculum.
Special Olympics Illinois/West Central Area 11
provides year-round sports training and competition
in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and
adults with intellectual disabilities. This grant
engaged additional athletes and increased local participation numbers by 5%.
Two Rivers Resource Conservation and Development works to bring about economic improvement
through the development of natural resources, provides for environmental protection, and works with
others to resolve social concerns of the area. The
group is facilitating a safer playground at Longlett
Park in Camp Point, Illinois. Grant funding provided
playground equipment for preschool children.
The Quincy Family YMCA builds strong kids,
strong families and strong communities. This grant
assisted with the purchase of equipment for the Kids
Fit Zone to engage children in fitness and combat
childhood obesity rates in the area.
The YWCA Quincy is dedicated to eliminating
racism, empowering women and promoting peace,
justice, freedom, and dignity for all. The Community Foundation grant supported the Transitional
Housing program for women with children who have
fled domestic violence environments and been rendered homeless.

This fund provides a means for supporting the
arts.
Quincy Art Center seeks to educate the public by
promoting the growth and appreciation of the visual
arts through exhibitions and programs. This grant
provided art supplies for volunteer art teachers that
serve as instructors in the Art Mentoring Program
for children in Quincy schools.
Communityworks
Endowment Fund
The Communityworks Endowment serves the
counties of Adams, Brown, Hancock, and Pike in Illinois in the areas of early childhood education, workforce development, and land use and preservation.
Working with parents, child care providers, businesses, and community organizations West Central
Child Care Connection promotes the availability of
quality child care services in the area. This grant
provided funding for the Quality Child Care Mentoring Program in rural Adams and Pike counties in
Illinois.
assists John Wood Community College in providing
quality educational opportunities and services at
affordable levels that meet the diverse needs of the
area. Grant funding supported the creation and
implementation of a fast-track workplace skills program to transition GED students from the classroom
to work.

This fund supports charitable interests in
Quincy and Adams County.
A grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Central Illinois assisted in serving children in Adams
County by providing one-to-one mentoring relationships, thus contributing to better schools, brighter
futures, and stronger communities for all.
The Center for Effective Nonprofits assists community organizations in capacity building and education so that they can better serve their clients. The
grant was used for access to The Foundation Center
online grant resources for area nonprofits at the
West Central Illinois Philanthropy Center.
Chaddock offers hope and healing to children and
families by providing innovative services in caring
settings. Funding was used to implement the adult
attachment interview process to increase the effectiveness of the Developmental Trauma and Attachment Program that provides intensive treatment
services to victims of disrupted adoptions.
The Fowler Development Association works for
Horizons Social Services of Adams County seeks
to meet the personal and community needs of the
disadvantaged and destitute in the city of Quincy
through programs such as the Quincy Soup Kitchen,
the Quincy Transitional Work Program, and the
Horizons Clothes Closet. This grant was used to purchase a refrigerator/freezer for the food pantry and
soup kitchen.
The Quincy Art Center seeks to educate the public by promoting the growth and appreciation of the
visual arts. This grant supported the Art Mentoring
Program for volunteer training that provided art
classes to K-3 students in Quincy elementary
schools.
Grant funding assisted in purchasing Macintosh

the high school curriculum.
The Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association
brings orchestral and choral music to the youth and
people of Quincy and the surrounding area. Funding
from the Community Foundation supported the 40th

many children have little or no access to the arts due to cuts in
schools’ curriculum or lack of programs in their communities.
The concerts provide a musical experience plus encouragement
to participate thanks to the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association. It presents three free concerts to school children.

the dancing,” said a fourth grade student from Southeastern Elementary. “You really inspired me to learn to play an instrument.
I want to play the harp so much. It sounds so beautiful.”

Red Cross, a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, provides relief to victims of disaster and
helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to
emergencies. Grant funds were used to purchase
instructor books and materials for CPR classes.
The mentoring program provided by Big Brothers
Big Sisters of West Central Illinois helps children
reach their full potential through professionally-supported, one-to-one relationships. This grant helped
serve the needs of children in Adams County, thus

As an intermediary agency, the Center for Effective Nonprofits (CEN) assists, promotes, represents
and strengthens community organizations as they
improve the quality of life for those they serve. This
grant was used for the annual membership fee of

The Douglass Community Services Kids In Motion
program teaches teens and pre-teens to value work,
their community, and their future. The organization
focuses the majority of their efforts on at-risk youth,
being referred by schools, juvenile offices, social service organizations and others. This grant provided
general support for the Kids in Motion program.
The Durham Community Center and Ball Park
provides a community center, playground, walking
path and ball fields to residents and visitors to the
small community of Durham, Missouri. Funding
allowed the community to update playground equipment to replace existing old and dangerous equipment.
The mission of the Hannibal Concert Association
is to bring live professional music and dance perfor-
mance to the Hannibal region. This grant provided
funding for artists fees for the 2010-2011 concert
season and increased the quality of music and dance
offered while keeping the price of admission to a
minimum.
The Hannibal Free Clinic promotes health and
wellness by providing quality services, at no cost, to
adults ages 18-65 who do not have access to basic
medical care. This grant provided general support to
help the Hannibal Free Clinic respond to the current
health and dental needs of the area.
Madonna House provides immediate shelter, food
and clothing to homeless women and their children,
creating a safe, stable environment where the family can acquire and improve skills to break the cycle
of instability. This Community Foundation grant provided funds to purchase nutritional foods that provide nutritious meals for those in the community and
surrounding area.

Their vision, followed by action, created the Community Foundation on November 26, 1997. By December
31—which marked the end of our first fiscal year—we
held $1,050. Additional financial support was committed.
That enabled our newly formed Community Foundation

Bringing donors and needs together
There are many ways in which the Community Foundation strives to serve as “The Perfect Match.”
With donors, it often begins when we ask, “What do you want to do with your charitable dollars?”
Helping donors define and fulfill their charitable goals offers a tremendous opportunity to impact a
charity, a cause or a community.
Her generosity will continue to affect her community
Lela ‘Lee’ Lindsay loved her family, her church and her community. It was evident in her conversations and actions. She sealed that
commitment with a bequest of $1,000,000 made through the Community Foundation and announced at the end of 2010.
“Thanks to her planning and professional assistance from her attorney, Steve Siebers, mother’s charitable giving could be done soon
after her death,” said her daughter Lee Lindsay Curtis.
The gift became part of the Arthur O. and Lela B. Lindsay Fund, which Lee established with the Community Foundation during her
lifetime to help fulfill her charitable desires.
“Mother wanted to establish a fund with the Community Foundation because she felt more organizations could be helped for a longer
period of time through this permanent fund,” said her daughter.
She wanted to build an endowment to make sure funds were always available to support the community, her daughter added. “Mother appreciated that the Community Foundation would handle granting, record keeping, IRS reports, and investment management so
that she did not need to start her own foundation. She also trusted the local leadership provided by the Board.”
“I was very close to Lee for over 40 years, and she was the most generous and caring person that I know,” said her son-in-law Dennis R. Williams. “She was a great booster for Quincy, supporting a variety of causes both large and small. The Community Foundation
of the Quincy Area is really the best way for Lee to continue her tradition of philanthropy.”
“Growing up during the depression gave Mother a greater appreciation of the financial resources to come later in her life. She acted
on her belief that to whom much is given, much is expected. Mother had learned, as her Pastor Bob Morwell had pointed out, ‘It is
truly better to give than to receive,’” said her daughter.
“Lela Lindsay was the ultimate class act,” said Steven Siebers, her attorney. “From her personal appearance and dress, to her values, to her generous support of her church and community organizations, she set a high bar.
“During her life, she never really felt comfortable receiving recognition for helping others. Her gifts were made from her heart to
make her community a better place.
“Her engaging smile and twinkle in her eye were her outward signs of always living life to its absolute fullest.
“Her gift to the Community Foundation serves as a lasting tribute to her life.”

‘Making Good Schools Better’
Improving education for local students is a priority for Brown County citizens.
The ‘Making Good Schools Better’ initiative has provided financial assistance to teachers and administrators pursuing that goal.
With educational improvements noted, community members explored ways to ensure financial sustainability for the program.
In 2010, the Hornet Pride Foundation provided seed money to create the Brown County Public Schools Education Fund with the
Community Foundation.
“The Hornet Pride Foundation began as a way to help the Brown County school system,” said Steve Kremer, president. “With the
new Brown County Public Schools Education Fund, and its administration through the Community Foundation, the community is in a
great position to accept large donations and to continue and market the fund.”
Brown County residents remain active with the fund. Grant requests are submitted through the Superintendent’s office. A committee with representatives from various Brown County organizations and the community at-large recommends use of the funds.

Some people see a need, shake their heads then walk away convinced the challenge is too great. Others decide to do something.
What began as a collaborative effort to support a soup kitchen in 2008 became Horizons Social Services. The organization seeks to
feed the hungry, improve community health and wellness, and contribute towards breaking the cycle of poverty in our community. It
does this primarily through three programs: the Horizons Soup Kitchen, the Horizons Transitional work program and the Horizons
Clothes Closet.
The mission and work impressed one person enough to prompt the donor to begin a fund to help ensure the organization’s future.
Because a fund can be started as an “Acorn” with a minimum of $1,000, the donor made the initial gift and continues to build the fund.
That seedling is growing and the donor hopes that others who believe in Horizons’ mission will also make gifts to help bring the fund
to the required $15,000 thus providing a permanent source of support for those in need.
The Community Foundation connects people who care with causes that matter, and it is a relationship that lives on beyond our lifetime. A relationship that
continuously makes a positive impact as you have chosen. By placing your trust
with the Community Foundation we place you at the front of our mission, making a lifelong connection, “The Perfect Match,” for you.
Most of us spend a better part of our life searching for our “perfect match.”
It is a process that requires time, planning, patience, and hopefully results in a
lifelong trust that our hopes and dreams are shared. What if your hopes and
dreams to make a positive impact on your community, a favorite organization,
or worthwhile cause could last not only during your lifetime but beyond? For
many of us, the intense amount of time, planning and trust necessary to do just
that would certainly be overwhelming. But, there is “The Perfect Match,” for us.
It is the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area.

Shopping for new school clothes is an annual event for some families. Others don’t have that ‘luxury.’ And, there are some items that are not available in thrift shops or second-hand stores. Imagine going to school with duct tape holding your underwear together. It happens.
Two Rivers received notice of potential funds from the Illinois Department of Human Services that would help meet basic needs of income-eligible
students returning to school. One requirement? Two Rivers had to secure $5,000 in private funds to obtain the IDHS matching grant.
The Community Foundation presented this need and opportunity to one of our donors who has a charitable fund with us. The Back to School Essentials Program met the donor’s interest and fund parameters for a grant from the Community Foundation. That $5,000 grant leveraged an additional
$20,000 for The Back to School Essentials program.
As a result, more than 1,350 income-eligible students in Adams, Brown, Pike and Schuyler counties got to shop for new underwear, shoes, and socks.
The program had a dramatic impact. A grandmother, raising three grandchildren on a fixed income, didn’t know what they were going to do for
basic items. She received vouchers to purchase essentials that her grandchildren needed—underwear, shoes, and socks—which the family could not
afford. In tears, she thanked Two Rivers’ employees for the new items.
Matching need with resources
Delivering care with respect and dignity
The all-volunteer Hannibal Free Clinic provides services, at no cost, to qualified adults aged 18-65 who are living below 150% of poverty level and
living without health insurance. These services are vital because many Northeast Missouri residents do not have access to basic medical or dental care.
The Community Foundation assisted the clinic by awarding a grant from its unrestricted endowment funds to provide a helping hand. That enabled
more than 500 Northeast Missouri families to access basic medical, wellness and dental care.
The Free Clinic prides itself in respecting the dignity of each patient, working collaboratively with volunteers, fostering community partnerships,
and responding daily to the current health needs in our area.
